JOSE Fonte admitted Saints let anxiety get the better of them in last night’s defeat to Swindon.

The Portuguese defender said the mood in the dressing room after the 1-0 loss was one of disappointment and frustration.

But he told his teammates they must keep believing that they can still make the playoffs, despite facing a 16-point gap with just 11 games left.

“The mood after a game like this is so, so frustrated, because we gave everything,” said Fonte.

“The effort was there, the ball just didn’t go in.

“You get really nervous and anxious and you see the ball bouncing off defenders, the goalkeeper making good saves and the ball just won’t go in.

“You get really anxious, because we knew we had to win.

“But we’re professionals, we know where we want to go and it’s one of those nights and I said before we need to forget this game and go to MK Dons (on Saturday) and try to get the three points.

“We just want the next game to come so we can clarify this.”
