Daily Echo launches this year's Southampton Player of the Season vote

Rickie Lambert

Adam Lallana

Dean Hammond

First published in Saints News

IT HAS BEEN a memorable season for many of Saints’ stars, but who has been your top performer?

The Daily Echo is once again giving fans the opportunity to vote for the winner of our Player of the Season award.

Many famous names have received the honour in the past, including Mick Channon, Alan Ball, Kevin Keegan, Matt Le Tissier and Alan Shearer.

And you have the opportunity to add another name to that list of Saints legends.

Click here to see the list of nominees (PDF).

Kelvin Davis claimed the prestigious trophy in a landslide last year and many people will expect a similar margin of victory this season for 35-goal hotshot Rickie Lambert.

But things might not necessarily be so clear cut this time round.

Davis was the stand-out candidate last year, as his string of sensational displays in goal were one of the few high points of a miserable campaign.

But while Lambert has now stolen most of the headlines, he is not the only one to have enjoyed a fine season.

A long list of strong contenders includes Davis, Adam Lallana, Dean Hammond and January signing Jose Fonte.

As a whole, Saints have enjoyed a good year on the pitch, nearly making the play-offs against the odds, while winning the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy at Wembley.

Lambert, who is League 1’s top scorer, is undoubtedly favourite to pick up the award.

He has terrorised opposing defences, finding the net 29 times in the league, one of which was for previous club Bristol Rovers on the opening day of the season.

Lambert has added six goals to that tally in the cup competitions.

But he is not the only prolific goalscorer in the squad.

Midfielder Lallana has produced his best ever season for Saints, scoring 19 times, while taking his overall game up a notch or two.

Hammond joined from Colchester in August and has added a sense of drive and steel to the midfield, while Morgan Schneiderlin has enjoyed a strong season alongside him in the centre of the park.

Davis has once again had a stellar campaign in goal, while centre-half Radhi Jaidi has been a rock in front of him.

Dan Harding is also deserving of consideration, having added some much needed strength and stability to the team at left back.

But you may feel one of the club’s January signings has done enough in their short time with Saints to earn your vote.

Fonte has been nothing short of superb at centre back, while Jason Puncheon has brought more goals and excitement to midfield.

Then there is Lee Barnard, who has chipped in with some vital strikes up front.

So, although the club’s silverware chase is over this season, there is still one trophy left for the players to vie for.

The Daily Echo has chosen 15 players for you to vote from.

These have been selected based on the number of league starts for each (with substitute appearances used as a tiebreaker).

Adam Leitch's Top Three

1. Rickie Lambert
2. Adam Lallana
3. Dean Hammond

There can only be one player this year - and despite the goalscorers claiming the glory on the day, I think Rickie Lambert has shown true commitment since moving to Saints.
It is a true reflection on the team that we create so many chances for him - but his penalties and free kicks are priceless.
Rickie Lambert gets my vote!

i have been reading all the comments for weeks. I agree with some of the names and points said. But i have an unusal idea, I belive the PLAY of the year was our beloved ML & NC buying the club, that more than any player /team performance has given us all something to chear about. If it wasn't for them Davis would have gone, RL wouldn't be here. I vote for my Play of the year for Marcus.
Give him something to show how much he has done for us. This year i haven't cared about the results i've just been so pleased to see our name in the league. We came that close to not being.
p.s s-w Long-wait must be on about the death of poopey

Nice sentiment - but I think the fans should "club" together for a special award for Marcus.
How about a monster flag - opened in The Kingsland opposite the Directors box before the Southend game - and then presented to him after the game?
Simple flag
Cross of St. George
Club crest
Thank-you St. Marcus (need to check speeling for "c" not being "k")

good call about fonte, if we can get another c/h in the mould of killer most teams would'nt even bother turning up, if they did they would camp out in their own half where rickkeeee and the forward boys would terrorise them.

POS goes to Ricky from Kelvin & Deano joint runner ups. Rickie's all over the pitch contribution and deft flick on assists as well as his tally of superb goals some of which were sublime.

Yep in the early season things were ropey at the back but Kelvin week after week shows the kind of stopping ability that got him in the L1 team of the Season.
Dean Hammond seems to pull the lads together up front and shows a special maturity in the thick. He just gets stuck in from whistle to whistle like the energizer bunny on steroids he's a worker.

Most Improved: Morgan Schneiderlin and he'll get better and get international appearances too... good luck Morgan.

Jose delights as probably our current most valuable player He gets MVP and has pulled the back line together since coming in.

Most likely to succeed? (international stardom in the future?) Having seen a few appearances in the reserves Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain maybe our star in the making and gets my MLS.. this kid has guts and gile and I hope he gets a run on in the last two games.. little sh ite gets on the ball near the box watch him go... I can't wait.

Can I give an honourable mention to the hard work put in by Chris Perry and Wayne Thomas. When the chips were down the stalwart veterans came out and got stuck in. Loved Thomo's goal mid season and he came so close with his head a few times.

Hows that sound from a Kiwi Git that can't to games but hasn't missed a second of best available coverage. Love em all but can't sit on the fence can you.

Alan Pardew's Red Army are marching.

It can only really be Rickie, can't it? It's been amazing how injury-free he's been this season, given how much of a 'shift' he puts in for us. And hopefully, if he feels the love from us it'll make him less likely to consider joining someone else.

I don't mind Rickie winning it, he probably deserves it as the most eye-catching palyer in the squad, but I'd like to see Dan Harding in the top three, he's been a real unsung hero this year.

I think Rickie to take it and deservedly so. Yet everyone deserves credit for this season and the effort they have put in. Hammond is still one of our better players, despite criticism. Yes he stood out first half of the season, the team though is a better standard now and he merges in more. Still worth his place.
If you took the play on the second half of the season, it would be close run for Rickie or Fonte for the player of the year.

There were around 50,000 saints fans at wembley and another 20,000 who wnated to go, which would have given a 90,000 crowd.
After the fact that pompey could not even fill their section for the semi final of the cup.
To come here bragging that pompey will be playing in front of 90,000 at wembley i will make one response, very few will be pompey fans, they haven´t got many.
I wonder who pompeys player of the year will be. Whoops sorry, they are all either there on loan or players who belong to to other clubs who are still owed transfer fees for them.
It is truely amazing they have been allowed to keep any of these players, considering the circumstances.
OH yes even with them they are relegated and by more than 9 points.

Chelsea 5 portsmouth 0
For the FA Cup final, each team has been allocated 25,000.
The rest are for the hangers on at the FA
Saints were allocated 44,000 for thr JPT final.
Different cup,different allocation of tickets

Just a bit of light hearted chat and banter, amongst football fans. No harm is intended. I am sure its not appreciated by some, but the world is not perfect.

I think that this has been one of those seasons where its a shame any one player has to win. The whole team has played well, and they all deserve applause.
Rickie will ofcourse walk away with it, but so many of them have also won in their own way.
Personally my vote goes to Dan Harding

Nice sentiment - but I think the fans should "club" together for a special award for Marcus. How about a monster flag - opened in The Kingsland opposite the Directors box before the Southend game - and then presented to him after the game? Simple flag Cross of St. George Club crest Thank-you St. Marcus (need to check speeling for "c" not being "k")
great idea.

i have been suggesting this to a certain trust,
on a saints web site site,
where a certain person is getting bucket loads.
i would also like to see themin the northam and other sections .
creates a great pre-match atmosphere,
so if any one wants to take the baton on , just hope you have abetter rapport with the club then the said mentioned groups/persons.
just remember they have to be fire-retardant ones.We must keep our health and safety brothers happy.

1st suggestion for flag is club crest and reference to 125 yrs,
