Southampton reveal retained and released lists of players

Daily Echo: Lloyd James Lloyd James

SAINTS have named the players they are letting go this summer.

Thirteen players - many of whom with lots of first team experience - are now free agents after their contracts expired.

Among those released are academy products Lloyd James and Simon Gillett, experienced defenders Chris Perry, Wayne Thomas and Graeme Murty and youngsters like Kayne McLaggon.

Two players have been offered new contracts - goalkeeper Bartosz Bialkowski and Ryan Doble.

David Connolly's contract is due to expire, but he is not on either the released or retained list, as negotiations are currently underway to keep him at St. Mary's.

Players released at the end of their contracts:

• Lloyd James
• Simon Gillett
• Oliver Lancashire
• Chris Perry
• Wayne Thomas
• Graeme Murty
• Jamie White
Michael Poke
• Jon Otsemobor
• Jake Thomson
• Kayne McLaggon
• Tom Dunford

Thanks to Chris Perry, Wayne Thomas you helped keep it together in the dark days. Debs will miss your legs Wayne said it was the only reason for going to St. Marys!!!!!! Must be some budget for the new season as we do not have a right back. Glad to see we are keeping Bart i think he is excellent, commands the box and good shot stopper. Roll on the new season. What about season ticket renwals?

it's true it did come from the club site, but what do the Echo do, they've got no way of getting any scoops because they b******ed up they're relationship with the club, at least there's no rumours here and perhaps we should be thankful of that. It must be a good omen for the season ahead, can't wait for the first day, I also can't believe I looking forward to the end of the world cup already, perhaps we can pick up a right back from there. Hey leatherboots send the Echo a CV, you can't do any worse than some of there jurno's

Mmmmm, all our options on a Right-back gone. Can only mean AP has a good amount to spend on the team, and upto now his signings have been pretty good.
The next couple of months are going to be very interesting as far as incoming personnel are concerned and does bode well for the forthcoming season! I feel the wait will be well worth it! :o)

No surprise that Lloyd James is to go as he has been poor since returning from injury. I did however think that prior to the injury he performed well.
John Otsemobor never really looked good enough for us.
Cant wait to see who is coming in. I'm sure we can rely on AP to choose more quality so we win the league next season.

This is one side of the story, and the losses do make us look thin in some positions. But the thoroughly businesslike information on the Official site (where the information came from word for word) shows the clinical approach our management team are taking.
Given the immense NC statement earlier in the week I have total trust that the players brought in during the summer will make for a fantastic new season. Confidence reigns.

Good luck for the future Chris!

PS:- Hope we are looking for a new keeper or perhaps Bart will get his chance?

Looking at it he gave all these players the whole season to impress him ,that is why they have not been retained.

I also think we will sign a striker, another central midfielder and hopefully another winger or just bring Antonio back.

This is on the OS website about Paul Wotton.
He became Jan Poortvliet's third summer signing, penning a three year deal in the summer of 2008.

As for Papa & Antonio they were both on loan until the end of the season.
The club are being very businesslike and saying they have returned to their parent clubs.
This is not to say Saints will try to sign them.
Reading did a very good bit of business as they had the option of signing Antonio for a further season.
If Saints want him then they will have to buy him.
That is good business practice

HMRC - Her Majesty's Revenue and Custom's.
Andyourmoneyover the poopey administrator can't count, and it seems that only party's with more than 25% (HMRC now has 26.1%)of the owed debt can scupper the cav deal that he's trying to get through (payout 20p in the pound), one of the debtors was in fact a creditor (to the tune of £4mill) and with this extra money in the pot , it now confirms that HMRC has the right to say that they could want to hold out for a greater share; andyourmoneyover has said that if they can't reach agreement with the other creditors the company would have to fold. Regarding new signings we should all bear in mind NC's consistant quotes about creating a team from the bottom up;i.e.only use the top end of the transfer market when other options are not available.
That suggests that the majority of new signings will be young...and good..and 2 or 3 others in important areas that we need to fill or cover will be older experienced players that will see us to the PL. These players could even come down from the PL.
Lets see,the future looks good.

I think we'll finish first. Most Saints fans don't think we will, but here is some reassurance.
PLYMOUTH: Who just got relegated are in money problems, will be selling most of their "Championship" players and haven't got a manager.

SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY: Will be selling Tudgay, Spurr, Grant, Johnson and several others. Have money problems and just rejected a bid from an American company.

PETEBOROUGH: Will be selling some players, and I don't think they actually pose that bigger threat.

This is going to be a good season for the Saints.

We need;
At least two players who can play right back.
At least one central midfielder.
At least one striker (if 442)
Significant cover for wide midfield, unless youth is to be relyed on. If we play 451 more often then we need two.

I for one would prefer us to have a smaller squad of higher talent & ambition, if we pick up any serious injuries we can still look to loans & January. It depends on what AP's tactical plans are, only Norwich managed to beat us on goals per game, and only millwall & leeds had fewer goals against per game. We are close & if we add stability to our team we can rule this league.

I'm a bit shocked at a couple of the names.... James (who was very useful in midfield and right-back the first half of the season) and Otsemobor (who was only signed what, 6 months ago?).
.
No idea how Mclaggon, Lancashire or the other academy players were but seems a shame, I hope they get some good football elsewhere.
.
Thanks to Thomas, Perry, Murty et al who are great and experienced but I guess they wanted some younger ones to build a team which can stick together for the next few years.
.
I'm hoping Pompey win tonight as at least it will be a Hampshire team winning the F.A. Cup, but don't fancy their chances... Chelsea are rampant lately. You never know though, Pompey have got some great players and no pressure.

You can only release players when their contracts end.
So he would probably get rid of more if he could

Gaz,
HMRC - Her Majesty's Revenue and Custom's.
I think, given the passionate comments from NC this week, we can expect him to be very involved in any new signing, selling them his vision for the future.

I think his passion and plans will see us signing players that make us gasp with surprise, as happened so many times during Lawrie Mac's days in charge.

Last year was just the beginning and the Southampton Style will be coming to fruition sooner rather than later.

Saint's have started the process of re-building, I think they are absolutely right in the 13 players who have been released, some not good enough and some injury prone just picking up wages? as for Chris Perry he has been an absolute true professional and given excellent performances every time he has played, regarding the right back issue I'm certain they would not have released all there right backs if they didn't have any lined up! cleared the deadwood now it's time to strengthen our squad with some more quality for both league 1 and the Championship. This is a very crucial time for Saint's as careful planning and pre-season were entirly missed for obvious reasons at the beginning of the season just finished

I agree with above, I don´t think Thomas and Perry have been released because they are not good enough. We are looking to set up a team for not just next season but the season after. Age is against them.
The others because AP is not looking for div 1 squad but one to win the championship. I feel sorry for the lads thta are going but i think Ap is thinking are they going to be good enough for an assault on the championship.
Morgan and Adam have 2 years left on their contracts. The rumoured offers above are nowhere near enough.
As for Kelvin div 1 best voted goalkeeper and Keeper in the third best defence in that league and bet defence in the lasy half of the season, why are a couple of people still slagging him. every keeper messes up from time to time. I can remember a certiain goalkeeper named balo....against Palace first game of the season, a couple years back. If a keeper makes a mistake it is in the net
I think we have to good keepers i hope we hold them both

Amazing how we had so many players on the books I bet we don't sigh 13 before the new season. Hope we do sign Antonio and Papa Waigo. I wondered whether Murty might be invited to join the coaching staff. I can't see that he'd be able to carry on playing.

I sense the force is with you Ranger....turn away from the dark side...we could introduce you to the top corner of the Chapel End to start with...and with a steady infusion of alchohol...the Itchen...then Kingsland...and then to the Northam....you will be purchasing the 2010/11 red n white shirt in no time...you know it makes sense...the future is bright...and it glows red n white! :O)

What a day, someone trashed Liss train station which meant no trains to London from Portsmouth. Did a really nice thing, took a skate from Petersfield to Guildford so he could get to Wembley.
Came back this evening on the A3 and made sure when I stopped for fuel I had my Saints coat on.
Thought it was a crap game, Chelsea were poor, and Poopey, well thank god their finished.

Getting back to the headline. I wish all of the 13 players good luck in finding new clubs along with thanks for wearing our shirt with pride.

The player which I am sad to see go is Wayne Thomas because of his efforts this season.

Football moves on and I look forward to hearing news of any new arrivals.

Maybe because the skates can't afford anything, let alone fresh salmon with a nice burgundy, they think wearing it is nearly as tasty.

i remember pardew saying the club was carrying too many pros when he arrived, and he also said not too long ago that he will be building a team ready for the championship this summer.
These players are obviously not up to scratch in his eyes and with the wage bill now lower it will enable him to bring in some real quality that will have an impact on the team.
However i wish the 13 well wherever they go, thanks for your efforts.
But im already getting excited as to who will come in, as i feel letting 13 squad players go is a real statement of intent..........brin

i think i would have kept lloyd james in the squad, i think he's done well for us, but apart from that no resal suprises. its a mixture of young players who havent quite made the grade, ageing players and players who have had alot of injuries. but i'd guess that with this many players leaving, there will be some money to spend. right back looks like a position that will be need to be filled.

Of the list of 40 on the Saints web site, 12 players are going. I am a little suprised that Ost and James are going, but I can see the point that if they are not going to be first choice right backs, then maybe they should not be retained. McLaggon will succeed at another club, maybe Bournemouth could take him and James? I hope all the young Saints get new clubs soon. I am sure James will return to St.Marys as part of an unfashionable L1 club, and I hope that he regains some of his form (some crossing practice might help).

I think the list is fair. Thomas & James have worked hard, and we should be grateful for their efforts, but with the changes at S. Marys, shows a clear direction. Good call, as usual, AP & NC.
Think we should remember that we have a chairman who makes very few statements, remember what we used to have? Quack!

As I posted on another thread the BBC site quotes

Transfers - May 2010
The transfer window is now closed for permanent signings for the remainder of the season.

Premier League and SPL clubs cannot sign any players, on loan or full transfers, until the transfer window ahead of the 2009/10 season opens on 1 July.

Clubs in the Football League can sign players on loan outside of the transfer windows, following a seven-day period after the transfer window closed on 1 February.

Outside of the transfer windows, any club may still sign players on an emergency basis (such as if they had no goalkeepers available) with the permission of their competition's governing body, eg the Premier League.

Players who are out of contract and do not have a club, can be signed outside of the transfer window if they are unattached free agents when the window closes.

Doesn't help much does it?

i think you'll find that the transfer window opens at the end of the playing season (now)for no more than 12 weeks and closes at 5pm on the 31st of august.

Wouldn't be surprised if he moves, three years from now we could be in the Prem but he could get the chance a lot sooner. Celtic, Newcastle & Brom are all interested & I would not blame him for wanting the chance to play at a higher level.
That said we don't have to sell our best players now & are on the up & up, if he stays he will become "Rickie Lambert - Saints Legend"
I don't think The Echo will be writing many more rumors for a while now; these threads are great for rumors though, without the backing of professional journalism we can take all rumors at face value & not give them credence until explained.

I was just thinking the same, especially the established regime part. Not only do you lose a manager when sacked but also the backroom staff too. How many coaches have we got through in the last decade? Dean Wilkins, Wally Downes and Les Reed (youth) will need time to get to know the players and visa versa. Building trust and respect and a working relationship takes time and now AP's position is secure for next year they can continue this process. No doubt we have some signings in mind and, the bit I really bl%dy love, the financial muscle to acquire them. What a difference from this time last year! The "fans" calling for instant results and success would do well to remember that period. I want my 2010/11 season ticket, new shirt, Scott Arfield (amongst others!) and a fixture list! I will cope with the ultimate disappointment of the World Cup because the future is bright and it's Red and White!

my thoughts exactly...the blue few can say what they like, but we are on the up and they are on a downward spiral.......it's good to be a saint !
not only is it good to be a Saint....it's DAM good to be a Saint. We have a close season to speculate and build under an established regime (that aint happened for a while!). It's gonna be great on here watching it all unfold...we will agree...then disagree...argue...( hey...let's not be ridiculous and completely lose it online though)...and bicker. But the best thing is...we all follow a team that is on the up and will acheive if we give them the chance to. I love my club...it's good to be a Saint...and it's gonna get even better!!!! :O)
You must understand the nature of the new regime at SMS! If NC kept us sweating about AP's future I very much doubt he will be releasing the really important stuff till much nearer the new season! The catering facilities are getting a revamp as we speak but news as to the new signings wrapped in pastry is under a double double secret clause and I risk a life-time ban if I chicken n leek any details! I've steak n aled my reputation on it and homemade burger it if I will risk that!
