Southampton draw Bournemouth in the Carling Cup first round

Daily Echo: Southampton FC news from the Daily Echo Southampton FC news from the Daily Echo

SAINTS have been drawn at home to Cherries in the first round of the Carling Cup.

Alan Pardew's men will host Eddie Howe's team in the week beginning August 9, in what promises to be an exciting and passionate south coast derby.

The two teams are already due to meet twice this season, after Cherries were promoted to League One.

But they will now get an extra look at each other, in the first week of the season, when they face off at St Mary's.

Elsewhere, Pompey have been handed a tricky fixture, away at Stevenage.

They have just been promoted and for them to play the League 1 favourites away from home where no league points are at stake is a good thing for them. They are not expected to win so it will probably be easier for them

OK, I'm in the slightly strange position of living in Soton but being a season ticket holder at AFCB.
I'll be totally honest and say I don't expect us to win any of the three games in the coming season. Our objective is to stay in the division whereas your is to be promoted, I believe that both will happen.
There will doubtless be a few idiots from our lot who see this as a chance for a ruck but I hope I'm right in saying that most fans see this as a friendly rivalry against south coast rivals who have been in a higher league for the past 50 seasons. For that reason, I'm looking forward at having the chance for a league meeting(s).
All three should be good occasions.

If the gaps in the squad are filled adequately, then i don't see why we can't have a good cup run, we should be playing above our level as much as possible next season. If we've the depth, this will only help our progress. Fair to say that we do need a few signings, and they need to be of the quality of the existing players.
What with all the "West Country Saints" and all the people on holiday, there will probably be more Saints fans coming in from that direction than Cherries!

Its all about opinions, if we'd not dropped points by turning the few winable games that we either drew or lost last season, we could have made the playoffs.

Not that the JPT wasn't fantastic, it was more about the Wembley experience and the show of strength by the fans for the club, and the fans feeling that the cloud hanging over the club for the past five or so years was finally lifting.

The serious business is promotion, would anyone be happy with another JPT trophy and a 3rd year in league 1?

I know NC and ML wouldn't and AP would be working elsewhere!

We are a league 1 club, the only reason we ended up in league 2 was the football league and they kept us down by punishing us by -27points and an embargo limiting us to 14 players for most of the season

What's all this Cherries bashing from some?? lol

I am a devoted Cherries season ticket holder who happens to live a mile away from Fratton Park (!). For me, I am looking forward to the matches (League & Cup) between AFCB and Saints.

Friendly banter is great and should be encouraged - so long it doesn't go too far!

As for those who think that the Saints will walk the matches against us ..... think again! IF you're such hot favourites then you should walk League One. At the same time there are other 'big' clubs in League One (Charlton and Sheff Wed) who will also be eyeing automatic promotion ..... so don't get too carried away. The so-called League One minnows will be looking to the 'big' Clubs with a view to trip 'em up. Look how long it's taken the likes of Nottm Forest/Sheff Weds (and others) and more recently, Leeds, to bounce back to the 2nd teir.

I wish Saints well for the season ahead, but not at our expense ;-)

Look how long it's taken the likes of Nottm Forest/Sheff Weds (and others) and more recently, Leeds, to bounce back to the 2nd teir. I wish Saints well for the season ahead, but not at our expense ;-) UP THE CHERRIES!! exiledcherries

There are some on here that think that Saints have a walkover having drawn Bournemouth. Didn't someone once say, 'Football! It's a funny old game!' It produces some 'funny old results!'
next season we wouldnt be a such a push_over as we were last season lambo@co will fantastic

This may not be the walk over all Saints fans seem to think it will be. Thye had a very good season last year with a transfer embargo for most of it.
.
Take a look at their friendly games in July - Fulham, Spurs, Derby & Poopey
.
Who have we got - Oh yes! Reading & Eastleigh - some test eh:(
.
COYRS!!!

Getting up in the morning in NZ and checking newsnow linking to stories full of BS from Howe and the Cherries saying they are pleased with the draw and they are coming to win. Such talk doesn't come from SMS these days and certainly not while the manager is building his squad for the push to win L1.
The Carling Cup is not a priority maybe Pards will put out the reserves.
Walk over talk is wasted on sensible fans as banter is to those with no sense of humour.

Saints haven't proven themselves consistent enough to definitely win any game yet so lets save some banter for after the game.

Let's quietly look forward to our league clashes where nothing short of hammering Howes outfit will do.

to be honest - i think Saints will win, probably not easily, but it is great to have a draw like this in the first round as it means that quite a few people will come out to watch the local derby, meaning more funds for the two clubs. In the Cherries case the extra funds will be fantastic for them.

I lived in Bournemouth - just near Dean Court - for a while, and found the AFCB supporters to be a super bunch. I should hate to think that we were hated rivals, as someone said on here, at the end of last season.

I hope you do well, but not as well as we do!!

COYWWARSABS!!!!!!!!!
Do we have a derogatory name for Cherries fans? I've never heard one! Appears some of them have adopted the term "$****" for us, which is nice!
i call them the fruits when they refer to us like that :-)
