David Connolly signs new Southampton deal

More stories about: David Connolly, Southampton FC

David Connolly has agreed a new one-year contract at Saints.

The former Republic of Ireland international has signed in time to jet off to Switzerland later this week with the rest of Alan Pardew’s squad for their pre-season training camp.

Connolly, 33, scored five League One goals in nine starts plus 11 as a sub last season, though only one of those goals came in the second half of the season after the striker missed the best part of three months through injury.

He also scored two FA Cup goals in the 3-2 first round win at Bristol Rovers.

Pardew had signed him in October with the player a free agent having been released by Sunderland.

The Saints manager is still looking to sign a striker as cover for goal ace Rickie Lambert.

Good to have this sorted. He won't be a regular starter as he has to be handled with care but it's great having him as an option. Now can we PLEASE sign Antonio . . .

this is good news - will give us a little bit more in front of goal - they had always wanted to offer him a new contract, so it wouldnt have replaced potentials signings, i reckon with Lambert, Barnard and Connolly we will only need one more striker.

Now what a great bet for him to be League 1's top goalscorer next season!!

Glad to have him signed up, but I don't expect him to play more than 20-25 games or score more than 10-15 goals because he just just doesn't have the fitness anymore. Epsecially on the swamps that we have to endure at some away grounds.

At this level however, no other team will have a player of this calibre on the bench, so best of luck to him!

We have very good strikers now, but no genuine, blistering pace up top. If Pard's is still going to try to find a back up for Lambo then I assume he's not targeting a nippy player either. We shall see! Still exciting times though!

At the end of the season there were 14 players whose contracts were up for renewal. AP released 13 of those players and offered DC a new contract.

and an unfit Connolly is a drain on finances.
Is he just a cheaper option than buying a player who is not injury prone?

Saints need to build a first class squad of players that can win games on a number of fronts this season. Connolly will add competition and no doubt his contract reflects his injury proneness...but he is premiership quality when fit and on form...rather have him in the team than for Saints to play against him!

I'm sure there'll be more transfer activity now that Saints are starting pre-season training...I don't think we have a right back...another central midfielder is required and another big forward.

yes, but i wish he'd take it off!!!!

seriously, though, this is very good news, probably worth at least 10 goals over the season as long as he doesn't get crocked again.
I reckon that means we only need three (or four at most) more signings - a striker, midfield playmaker and a right back (or perhaps two - and I hope one of them isn't Murty). COYWWARS

We are the 4th richest English club!! Money plays no factor for saints anymore. Come on mate, keep up!!

I sincerely hope your comment is tongue in cheek. We are not the 4th richest English club; Herr Liebherr has a personal fortune of 2.5bn but this is not the club's money. He didn't get that level of wealth by throwing money at a problem but through astute business decisions. We are also governed by salary caps. I am glad that we are not paying silly, over the top transfer fees that have ruined football; I'd rather we did it properly and not go for the quick fix that our fishy friends are now suffering for.

At the moment the squad is much weaker than last season. We need Papa and Ant back, but then it needs further strengthening so we can push onwards and upwards from where we finished off otherwise the title might be harder than you think.

the title is always harder than you think and I'm sure no-one is taking anything for granted - you can leave that sort of thinking to the overpaid prima donnas that capello took to south africa.
There are two automatic promotion places up for grabs and we should a have an option on one of them because we don't want to go through the lottery of play-offs.
As things tand, the squad is three or four players light of being solid enough to compete for the entire season, but expect that to be remedied in the next three weeks.
I'm sure AP will have them ready and raring to go come Plymouth.

Rekon a swiss defence signing may be a good bet. I also thinck AP has prob got his finger well and truly out. He will have certainly been watching the world cup and i predict maybe a couple of players on a free + 1 or 2 from overseas.

Ok cotton wool connolly is a great bench warmer, and a threat to bring on but lets get real here, he is injury prone and will not be a regular. We need pace up front to compliment lambo,Barnard is his understudy, correct ?
I think ,for what its worth (probably nothing)automatic promotion is on for us but we lack that body in the middle of the park to put a foot on the ball and get them on the back foot aka jimmy case. dont crucify me its just an opinion. Has antonio signed ?

Thought his arrival kick started our run before X-mas last year! If he stays fit no reason why he can't do same this season because his football brain is way ahead of most defenders he will come up against in L1! I'm happy!

Third'ed chaps, well happy DC has put pen to paper and hopefully he is a bit fitter than last season and plays more of the up-front killer sub option, cant really see AP breaking up the RL and LB combo as a starting option, but with DC on board that will do for me! As a by the by, I also cant wait to see how good Fonte is for us this season to come, I thought he was nothing short of brilliant since he signed, and at the JPT final he never gave Carlisle a sniff, so good in fact I want to change my name by deed poll ;)
