Lambert predicts more signings to come

RICKIE Lambert says he would welcome the arrival of some new faces at St Mary’s.

And he has backed Saints boss Alan Pardew to bring in players of the right quality.

Saints released 13 players this summer and star striker Lambert, who opened his pre-season account in the 1-1 draw at Sutton United at the weekend, believes the club could do with bringing in some more to address the balance.

“I think we need a few players,” he said.

“Obviously the size of the squad we had last year was big and we have lost a few.

“But the players the gaffer brings in, knowing who the gaffer is, will be quality.”

Lambert thinks that has proved to be the case with the players that have arrived at St Mary’s so far this summer.

The Saints manager has increased his defensive options by bringing in full-back trio Ryan Dickson, Frazer Richardson and Danny Butterfield.

They have all impressed Lambert in the short time they have been at the club.

“It was disappointing for Frazer that he got the injury straight away,” Lambert said.

“He looks a really good player so hopefully he is back sooner rather than later.

“Butts (Danny Butterfield) I thought was superb, he played a really good game.

“In the first half I thought he was one of the only players who shone.

“And Dicko (Ryan Dickson), he came off with a little strain which I think is OK and I think he is settling in fine.”

Saints continue their pre-season preparations this week with games at League Two Barnet tonight and at home to Championship side Reading on Saturday.

Lambert is looking forward to both and thinks they will give a good indication of how ready Saints are for the new season.

“It’s a good game on Tuesday against Barnet,” he said.

“I have played there a few times.

“It’s a hard place to go so it’s going to be a good challenge for us to get ready for Plymouth.

“Reading as well, they are in the Championship and are a good team, so I think they are two good tests for us.”

Dicko ! haha

Glad to hear Rickie is happy. He's always come over as the kind of guy who likes to learn of others and enjoys the game for the game's sake.

I'm sure he's going to have a bumper crop of goals this season. Good Luck Rickie..

It's interesting that the Echo reports continue to say that Saints lost 13 players in the summer. Fact is the number currently stands at 19 and we need to bolster the squad. A big part of last years success was the depth we had. Those gone so far - Antonio, Waigo, Molyneux, Preen, McLean, Gillett, Lancashire, White, Dunford, Thomas, Pernecky, James, Otsemobor, Poke, Thomson, McLaggon, Boyle, Perry & Murty (add Pulis come August and that is a round 20) - Bart still to sign a contract.

Rickeee doesn't mind people joining because he's a shoe-in. It would take a hell of a striker to displace him from the team.

'Dicko' and 'Butts'. At 35 I shouldn't find that funny but I can't help it!

Big blow if Antonio does not come back.He has the makings of a top player.
I dont think Vassell is the answer we need to find a young one with potential to play on not going to be easy as clubs will all see Saints coming.
Fingers crosssed eh.

Big day for Devoniansaint today.
Will he ever be able to make a prediction on these pages again.?
I see Ambrose has signed a new deal.
I see Jutkiewitc has gone to Coventry.
I think the man who said yesterday that Vassell would be more likely to go to Blackpool (if invited) is right. Especially as that team is committed to going for goals.
I hope that it is true that AP has talked to LeFondre although he is as yet untested outside of Div.2 .
Will Tyrone arrive today, I doubt it.
My 'Wanted ' is still Andy Monkhouse.

Le Fondre is just the right sort of player we need to back up and put pressure on others, he has proven himself consistently albeit at a lower lever (but that was the same with lambert), he is hungry, popular and works hard and would fit in with the teamwork ethic we now have. and possibly the right price too.

This might be true...a number of Championship clubs are after him though as well so it will be interesting if Pards can convince him to sign for us!

What about Marlon King who is released from prison next week :) We need pace tho and he obviously wasn't quick enough to escape the cops so probably not quick enough in this league either.

We may have had depth but how many of these players were a big part of our season??? Just 2. Papa and Antonio. Others only played a game here or there. We've replaced Ots and James with two quality right backs, all we need to do next is replace Papa and Ants, hopefully sooner rather than later eh!

Where are all these signings people said would definitely happen before today?????????

Alan Pardew and Nicola Cortese are the ONLY ones who know who's coming in and when. I get that it's fun to speculate but lets wait til we get the facts before talking (what will be utter rubbish) about other players. I think many of you on here play too much Championship Manager! Lol

An up and comer appeals as a talent to grow as we go.. but another experience provider seems the need to help kick start the season.. anyone getting a bit excited?

Any predictions for the reading game.. Saints 2-1..

And how many of these actually played last year......Waigo and Antonio were loans so were always going to go back.....Otsemobor, James, and Murty have been replaced by two much better quality right backs.....Thomas is injury prone and Perry is far too old now for the push forward.....we also have Seabourne and Martin to replace them anyway who look better players.....not one other played and so they are simply a waste of wage resources that could go elsewhere.....I would rather have 1 or 2 more quality players then 13-19 average players who add nothing to the team...

I have yet to make a Prediction on the transfer saga, so here goes.
My source (dont know if he is a good one yet as this is the first tip) tells me that we are to make an announcment about a signing, prob Tyson, on the OS after 11pm tonight.
The reason it will be after 11 is for the same reason the new kit was announced at that time, so its to late for the Echo to run with it tommorow. Only time will tell

Shame they're all full-backs tho. Hopefully we'll be attacking more than defending this season so would rather see us sign a striker and winger. Also, Pompey being allowed to sign Sonko is a joke! They have a transfer embargo - Bournemouth weren't allowed to sign anyone even a loanee when they had 12/13 players let alone the 18 Pompey have! Rules for some and NONE for others!
