Saints include Preston midfielder in friendly at Barnet

Saints included Preston midfielder Darren Carter in their starting XI for tonight’s friendly at Barnet.

Carter is deemed surplus to requirements by North End boss Darren Ferguson and recently spent time on trial at Millwall.

The 26-year-old started his career at Birmingham before moving on to West Bromwich Albion, from where he joined Preston in 2007 on a four-year contract.

Carter played for Millwall in a friendly against Exeter recently but a potential move fell down when the two clubs could not agree terms.

Average player, I would have thought we could aim higher than Carter.

Could do a job in league one but no better than what we have got.

Would rather see us go for Oakley.

Did show promise when younger and commanded a couple of decent transfer fees.

Never fulfilled that potential though but maybe Pardew can get the best out of him.

Solid enough without being spectacular.

Ha! I saw him on the saints website team for tonight, wikipedia'd him, came on here, copy and paste from wikipedia.

We were probably as good or better than Millwall last season and if they don't want him then I think we could probably do better.

saintade are you a season ticket holder? only you seem to be very negative. If you remember it took LEEDS THREE seasons to get out of this division. Its a place where anybody can beat anybody on their day. We as supporters must get right behind the boys for ninety five minutes in every game regardless.

Of course I'm right behind them every week, but doesn't it make you mad when Pardew sticks out a team like this? I don't care what anybody says, we need to get consistency with a WINNING team...if we're gonna get out of League 1 it's got to be this season, (the owners won't be around for a third year in L1 I can tell you that now) and at the rate we're starting at we won't get off to a flyer and that will be CRITICAL. Winning is a habit. What bot of that do you not understand?

Come on lads none of these results matter. Pardew needs to know how different mixes of players work and this is the time to esperiment not in a league game. I think Pardew knows what he is doing more than any of us who post on her.

I see that bunch of crooks down the road are stilling getting away with murder.

Don't you see the need to make sure that the SQUAD is ready for the season rather than just the team?

Personally, I'm thrilled that AP sees fit to bring the likes of Holder-Spooner, Raccine and Doble on in these games.

It says that after two years of throwing away our developed youth players such as Best, Blackstock, Mills etc. we might actually have a few potential irons in the fire!

I would be mad if we were playing only the so-called 'best 11' and the side became a breeding ground for complacency.

Give these kids and trialists a bit of
Bloody support man!

Alright smart-arse,you don't know who's fit and available 4 tonite do you?No nor do I,but I do know that Lallana,Puncheon and Richardson are injured. He's rested Scneiderlin because if you haven't noticed we're playing Carter from Preston tonight.
Racine and Holder-Spooner are both promising youngsters, apart from those 2 the others are all first teamers!!
Lambert is the only blatant absentee.
Don't think you understand the reason for playing friendlies.
Yes we need to be winning games, but since when have we had a good pre-season.
YOU need to lighten up and think about what you're saying.I trust in AP you obviously don't!!!

Forget tonights game, the result is unimportant.
What is important is who will the new signing be. I really do feel it will be Vassell, and that will be a huge feather in our cap in League one. It would really send out signals if a former England International who is still only 30 thought that we were going places.

Ex-Leeds player Andy Robinson not on the team sheet got a run on late sub!.. some trials going on.. asked on Twitter how Carter went.. mildly curious lol.

I love these games and see them as a way for fans to stay in touch and really support the club. I can't for the life of me see how we can get 13k sths and and only a few go to preseason games... is there no interest in the club except home seats? It's upset me there has been no solent coverage.. and it's due to our club pr people releasing exactly what they like and shutting out the media... thats happened before in history and I don't like it.

Dan, I cannot remember the last time a pre-season friendly apart from the Ted Bates Trophy was on radio. In fact I think even the TBT was only on Radio Hampshire.
In terms of watching, there is a cost to going to any game. I went to Sutton, and the cost was £10 ticket, £1 stand, £3 beer, £4 food and £12 fuel. Thats £30 for a pre-season friendly. All you see for that is a cr@p pitch, hundreds of substitutions, and players trying not to get injured.
I'm single, so money is not so important, but to most I think spending summer money on the kids and nice days out by the beach is far more important. Remember keep the family happy in the summer so they don't moan when you are never there during the season.

Re Vassell: I like is that last year he got goal of the season and the year before made the most assists.. He says he has a personal trainer and is all about power and pace.. I hope so we could use power pace.

Wonder if we'd get Tyson and Vassell..

Checked that last Pards interview, I read it that this mixture will continue for Reading game. I guess he really doesn't want to give away much.

Got a reply on Twitter they said Carter looked a good tidy prospect but maybe lacked fitness... played 90 mins.
