Mills goal gives Saints friendly win at Barnet

Saints defeated Barnet 1-0 in their latest pre-season friendly.

A single goal from Joseph Mills on 51 minutes was the difference between the sides on a wet evening at Underhill.

There were not many chances for either side but the game proved a good workout for Saints who fielded a mixture of first teamers and some fringe players.

For a video of the top stories in today's Daily Echo, click the front page.

Darren Carter also got an unexpected 90 minutes in the centre of midfield.

Carter is on the transfer list at Preston, who bought him from West Brom for £750,000 three years ago.

Saints now regroup for a few days before their major pre-season friendly of the summer, against Reading at St Mary's on Saturday.

i believe that these lower divisionn teams will give it their all against us in friendlies whereas we'll be goin at half pace so these results dont bother me. Its good to see the youngsters get a run out tho now is the time for them to be tested

Perry it's not about quality on paper it's about quality on the field! I agree with the boy totally!! Ok we had -10 last term but even if we didn't we wouldn't have made the play-offs anyway and that's our squad today without papa and ants! We have a good first 11 but not a very good squad. Take all of the successful teams for e.g, their whole squad is ready and capable of filling in at anytime. You can't say that about saints yet but this is what we need to achieve if we're going to be a successful team. Surely AP and NC don't need me to tell them this! Maybe they just like frustrating us! We could see the squad needed adding to with more quality last season so ytf hasn't it been sorted! We've got only 2 games left before the real business starts! 2 games! and we think we're gonna be ready for plymouth...

The whole squad hasn't performed well this pre-season as usual! but i can't understand why it hasn't changed under the new regime!

A professional will always want to win no matter what game it is so your theory on lower league teams giving it more is wrong because our players should be better, if they are not which it looks like then someone's not doing their job properly! I had so much confidence and excitement for our team before the last couple of games but now i'm bricking it!

I hope NC knows what he's doing, another season in this league would be disastrous! I hope we don't do a Leeds!

Anyone else see Pompey are allowed to sign Sonko on loan? It's a joke! They have a transfer embargo - Bournemouth weren't allowed to sign anyone even a loanee when they had 12/13 players let alone the 18 Pompey have! Rules for some and NONE for others!

Decent result - would have liked more goals but a win is a win and also a habit.

Disappointed that we seemed to play a 4-5-1 formation (can someone confirm this?). This is not the formation we need to win the league, as proven by Poortvliet, and we will struggle to break down teams playing like this. We should be using these friendlies so the players learn how AP wants them to play, and get to know how their teammates play, but not too confident that this is happening. Reckon we should have signed a striker earlier so they get used to how our current strikeforce play ane gel with the team

July 10 - 3pm - Truro City - 2-0 win
July 13 - 7.45pm - Torquay 3-1 loss
July 17 - 2.30pm - NAC Breda 1-0 win
July 21 - 7pm - AZ Alkmaar - 1-0 loss
July 22 - 7pm - SC Cambuur - 3-3 draw
They are having hereford and saltash before Saints..
I don't think their approach is dissimilar to Saints except that loss to Plucky Torquay..
COYR No doubt new players inbound and everything will come together.
Eagerly waiting the new players and anticipation of the new teams numbers!!

How can you say we don't have the strongest team, its clear for everyone to see, every position is covered with quality (although 1/2 more signings is required). Destroy lower league teams have you seen the team we have put out in the games. I agree we should beat them but look at Newcastle last year they got destroyed by lower league opposition and then stormed the league. Its pathetic that Saints supporters are arguing over pre-season, move on and wait for the season to begin.

What more quality do you need? From last season team of the year, righ back, left back, left mid and forward. Also believe fonte would have been in it given all season. Would be nice to have a few games for any new signings to practice together, but lambert, fonte, puncheon all slotted straight in. Anyone whose played football knows you don't go 100 percent in friendlies. Why over stretch or go for a dangerous 50/50, that's not what friendlies are about. With the lack of pre season lamberts had, I think it's fair to say AP is trying different ways to cope if he is unable to play, the right thing to do, test tactics and players, that's what I want to see in pre season, not see saints strongest team beat Sutton 5.0, what would anyone gain from that. Saints to storm league one this year

One thing that AP is not going to do is show all his cards to the opposition before the season starts, as he has said it is a matter of building fitness first, then it will be tactics using the best eleven. Who do rate as the starting eleven against the Green Army?

Carter looked excellent (although he needs to get stuck in a bit more and faded a little in the second half) and would be great with Hammond in the middle - he's much better than anyone else we have, hope we sign him. Impressed with Racine and Martin centre backs - very solid.Martin looks as if hel'll be very good once he has a bit more experience. These two could easily cover for Fonte and Jaidi (which is nice).Ben Reeves came on and looked very skilful and assured - he's definitely going to be a good player ( you know class when you see it). Dickson played well - coming on nicely. No Lambert meant no goal scorer (and no killer passes) - Pardew's right we need someone up to Lambert's standard (no easy task that's true).Barnard tried very hard but didn't have much support but without anybody else he must start with Lambo. We didn't supply enough crosses - this is also a worry.I can't understand why Pardew doesn't pursue this more adamantly. I suppose like a good centre forward the players need to be a notch up on general standards.

Don't understand the negativity over this result.
We started with a 16, 17 , 18, 19 & 20 year old on the park. Add to this we had a trialist plus 2 new full backs.
Only 3 starters could be considered regulars from last season (Davis, Barnard & Hammond) yet we won.
What is the problem with that?
Whoever said we only had 2 first teamers missing last night has revealed himself to be a complete tool.
AP has said, on the OS, that he wants to bring in 2 more players, maybe 3, so be patient.
If the comments on some Poopey sites are accurate (I don't know!!), there are new rules in the PL restricting squad size to 25 players this season. If that is the case there could be some decent young players being made available on loan in the next few weeks, that will be worth waiting for.

ummm.
Not agreeing with the doubters on here.
We finished 7th with -10 point start last season but I would disagree that it was this squad that wholly did that.
Mostly the squad was put together during the season in August and January.
This is now a settled squad and agreed we need 1 or 2 to strengthen but this is a fantastic squad for league 1. Also we seem to have kept our best players.
Our second half of the season form was fantastic so have a bit of faith people.
End of September I will start to draw an opinion on whether it is working.
