Saints announce 2010/11 squad numbers

SAINTS have released details of their squad numbers for the forthcoming season.

Summer-signing Frazer Richardson will wear the no.2 shirt previously worn by Dan Harding.

Harding will now be no.3, the shirt worn last season by Wayne Thomas, who was released this summer.

Fellow new boy Ryan Dickson has been handed the no.5 shirt vacated by Chris Perry who was also let go during the close season.

Alan Pardew's third new addition, Danny Butterfield will be Saints no.12.

A few players have also changed numbers.

Morgan Schneiderlin, no.19 last year, will be no.4 in the coming campiagn, replacing Jason Puncheon who has been handed no.10.

That was previously Paul Wotton's number but he will now be no.16.

With loanee Papa Waigo having returned to his parent club Fiorentina, Lee Barnard will be Saints' no.9 this campaign.

Jose Fonte, no.12 following his January arrival from Crystal Palace, has taken over Radhi Jaidi's no.6 shirt.

Jaidi will wear no.15 during 2010/11.

David Connolly, who agreed a new Saints contract this summer, is currently awaiting a squad number.

Saints boss Alan Pardew revealed after the friendly against Sutton last weekend that out-of-contract keeper Bartosz Bialkowski is close to agreeing a new deal at St Mary's.

That hasn't yet been finalised though the Polish stopper also hasn't yet been handed a number for the coming campaign.

Of the first eleven, numbers eight and 11 are currently vacant.

Connolly has been given the number 22 shirt it's been updated on the OS! Panic over!

8 and 11 up for grabs...maybe Carter can earn a contract and get one of these and then another player hopefully Tyson can take the other...I don't think Saints need another forward at this stage when we have Ricky, Barnard and Connolly...with players who can play just behind Ricky if moving to 1 upfront...but maybe in January or via the loan market we could pick up a big striker in the Ricky mould to act as cover. I'm sure AP is looking at all the best options available.

Can't wait for the Reading game now to see how ready the team is!

Connolly is No. 22 on the Saints site.

So we're gonna see at least 2 1st class players come in before the window closes, with 8 & 11 available right!

I'm probably the only one but, I was really hoping Lallana got the No. 7 shirt! Of course Ricky will never give it up and I wouldnt either! but Adam is and will be Saints forever, I think he's the new Matt Le Tissier! He's got the loyalty, the skill, all he needs to improve on is his 30-40yard screamers!

I also had a look at some of Carter's goals, and I gotta say I was impressed! Scored some great goals when he played in the Prem and all against teams like Arsenal & Liverpool etc! We'll do well to get him in!

I forgot Oscar Gobern still played for us! Is he injured still?? He always looked a promising youngster!

Really? Show me a better squad list in league 1. We are short favorates for promotion and rightly so. Looking at the fixture list and the bigger clubs (Sheff Wed, Charlton)financial issues, there are few teams I'd be happy to even take a point off. Although we will undoubtebly draw and lose games, I think we have the squad to win the league by some distance.

I think AP will give Fonte the captaincy this year...I don't think Hammond is commanding enough. Fonte can inspire and lead from the back!

As for Saints' chance of finishing top...I don't think AP has any excuses left if we don't finish in the top 2 this year. With a squad like the one below...Norwich didn't have much better last season!

Davis / Bart
Dickson / Harding
Butterfield / Richardson
Fonte / Seaborne
Martin / Jaidi
Hammond / Wotton
Schneiderlin
Puncheon / Oxlaide-Chamberlain
Lallana / Mills / Holmes
Ricky
Barnard / Connolly

Players often have a preferred number, maybe hammonds is 14.. Killers was 11 sagas was 4 wouldn't read anything into squad numbers personally .
As for freddy adu, would be awesome but he has a very high opinion of himself if you twitter him.
Think we should go for a 30 plus year Old big name for striker. And carter in mid.

Chris1991 says...
3:55pm Thu 29 Jul 10

We've been successful in the past by bringing in 'names' who were in the twylight of their careers. They still had the skill but not the pace though they make up for it with experience. The added bonus was to teach and inspire the youngsters.
They still want to play football but rarely feature in the top sides so sometimes they will come because they will be the big name once again. There's lots of them in the Premiership just seeing out their contracts. We need to get them on loan. We only need them for a season.

saintssaintssaints says...
3:56pm Thu 29 Jul 10

This is sooo obvious by AP that we are after a winger for the first time and then a striker as back up to the lamb.

Bring them on!
Just hope its just antiono and carter we need better than that! We need a marquee signing in MF or UP front

saint dan says...
3:57pm Thu 29 Jul 10

Snap up Carter asap - he's a class footballer and maybe just needs to get his head down and concentrate on his footy again. Balls to Vassell and Benjani. Both would end in tears and i dont think they would want to graft for the team. I know he's an ex skate but hows about Rowan Vine??Tad injury prone i knoe but he would rip people apart at this level. Apparently he's on a free too.

Intersting that Hammond doesn't have a first eleven number.

He was clearly one of our key players last year, yet I'm not convinced he would be capable of playing at the level Saints are aspiring to achieve. Will he be a squad plaer this season?

Kamawoop says...
4:17pm Thu 29 Jul 10

Should have read through the entire post before commenting. There was a suggestion that maybe 14 was his preferred number...

Err, I doubt it. Players may have preferred numbers, but I reckon those numbers are always gonna be less than 12...

Would anyone agree with me that it is just as important ,in fact probably more so, to have a couple of speedy full backs rather than wingers.? Especially if they are to be used as wing-backs.

Kamawoop says...
4:44pm Thu 29 Jul 10

Personally I think defenders should defend.

Have specialist wingers, whose priority is to attack.

Why play a defender as a midfielder, rather than a winger on the wing and the defender in defence?

I agree with you that whenever possible players should be played in their specialist positions.
My question though was about speed and whether if we are not to replace Ants and Papa (as seems increasingly likely) that it becomes increasingly important that our full backs are FAST.

Theirry Henry?? Carlos Tevez?? Paul Scholes?? Roy Keane?? a lot of players choose preferred numbers. I'm sure Lallana could have had either 8 or 11...

Or maybe AP said they can't have below 12 because he's using it as a ploy to attract more players? If a new player were to be given number 8 or 11 it would suggest u'd be gettin a lot of games?

Growing up as a kid, kicking the ball around in the park, jumpers for goal posts - I always dreamt of being Saints No. 14. I don't buy-it...

This is the best post on here.

Take out the players who arent good enough at the moment. We need two quality in each position this leaves:

Hammond/ new player
Schneiderlin/ new player
Puncheon/ new player
Ricky/ new player.

No to wotton, oxlaide, mills.

This means we need Carter in to cover for Schneiderlin.

Then a QUALITY CM to push Hammond.

Then a QUALITY Winger to push puncheon. ANTIONO.

Young, hungry, tall, goal scorer to learn and come in for Lambert but to also play along side him - AUSTIN.

We really do need to sign Carter, Antiono this weekend by Mon/Tues. Then before the end of Aug get in the TWO QUALITY SIGNING in CM and Striker which everyone will be loving - AUSTIN and a CM from Pardew who noone sore coming. Buscky??? PLEASE

You cant say mills and ox are first timers yet, they are young and yes hopfully come through but AP know these are 3rd choice players not players to push teh first teamers which is what he is after.

Carter, Antonio. 7/10's
Then two 9/10's. Austin & ??? CM.

We need to try and bin wotton and pulis then our squad is full of promise and class! Even holmes as well with Puncheon, Dickson, Mills who can cover left, even antiono if he signed.

Squad numbers mean absolutely nothing, repeat ,nothing. Its the quality on the park that we will all judge. We need a back up for lambo, imagine the scenario..... connolly gets crocked (sorry but highly likely) barney goes off the boil (probable) or god forbid lambo gets injured !!!! we need pace in the side , Ok vassell may be 30, is he still quick ?
So who are we going to play up front then with any of the main three ?
Ok we can all crow about scenarios, but this could be our downfall, please ,please get a quality striker in...............wit
h pace.
Imagine the side without lambert and you start to scratch your head, this is without doubt where our weakness lies.

Quite a few of you are looking too much into the numbers given. The games changed a bit over the years and the best 11 don't wear 1 to 11 in any team now.

There may still be a bit of pride linked to a few numbers like 10 but Beckham has made 23 a major brand.

Connolly not getting a number is srange. Lalalalalalalana getting 20 is no surprise after 20 goals last year.

Lots of the above posters must surely have been amongst the 859 that went to the Barnet game.. casting strong opinions on player..wish they'd say how they thought Mills went at the game..I heard he went really well, has l worked on new skills and is showing great improvement in training.

The away fans respect opinions from people who go to games and report what they saw.

Everything out of Pards two latest interviews couple with the latest numbering indicates incoming top winger and striker for the #11 and #8 perhaps Vassell and Tyson?

I do wonder what's happening with Adam Lallana. He has had a job in his dodgy knee and has bee pretty low profile since the canal swim in Interlakken. I thought the #11 would be his but agree that he may just fancy his lucky #20 (that's not uncommon.) If he is getting replaced by Darius Vassell and the young Dutchman Etiënne Esajas his fee will pay for them both. I said at the end of last season that he'd be the cash sale of the season as we do need pace and strength.. Hope that's not the case and certainly not worried about it as we really don't know do we.

All the doubters and worriers will soon be care free.. Saints are going up for sure this season. I don't expect a fast start but I expect a solid mid and a glorious finishing run mopping up the spoils of the L1 Silverware.

listen up frenchy. AP has signed the best two full backs in the league and a quality back up in Butterfield.

What makes you think he wont sign one of the best central mids in the league and one of the best wingers? These two places are left out in the squad numbers 8 and 11. He's looking for pace, flair, height and goals in these two positions. He needs someone who can score 10 goals from cm and 10 goals from the wing. He has talked about people to push the first team, just like having harding and dickson at LB. That is what he is trying to do in CM and Winger. Upfront he wants someone to replace lambert - NOT play with him!!

Kn*b.

His shopping list will be the likes of:

Austin/Le Fondre.

Pilkington & Antiono

Carter
Antiono/Arron Wilbraham

I was a bit bored so thought Id try and guess the starting lineup against Plymouth obviously Lallana is injured so for anyone that says where is lallana he is injured ok :0)
Davis (GK)
Harding (RB)
Fonte (CB)
Jaidi (CB)
Dickson(LB)
Butterfield (RM)
Hammond (CM)
Schneiderlin (CM)
Puncheon (LM)
Lambert (ST)
Connolly (ST)

this is just a guess and obviously prior to Carter actually signing for us but it doesn't make a bad looking side COYR!!!!!!

Always like these posts. I would make a small change to your starting lineup.

I would swap Harding to Left Back, Butterfield to Right Back and play Dickson in Midfield.
Upfront I would play Barnard instead of Connelly, only because DC'c not completely fit.

Good call I just believe in the smaller striker with the target man but yeah obviously DC's fitness could be a problem
you done well moving dickson in Left midfield I actually think those adjustments you made would make the team stronger you.
wanna be my assistant lol

yep good call have to agree with you there actually maybe if Connolly stays fit he could play next to Lambert over the course of the season I always like the little man upfront with the target man.
your adjustments would make a better team but it goes to show we have a few versatile players which is gonna help throughout the season

Like probably all of you guys I love saints and its one of my lifes big interests, I like reading about us every day and feeling like a part of things. And the place where us fans do that is the OS, BUT all were getting at the min is boring interviews with people behind the scenes which as a football man is of no interest to me whatsoever what "kate in the burger bar is doing"...what I want is a press conference with AP..havnt had one yet!!! I want to here from Frazer Richardson and Ryan Dickson....havnt had that yet!!! for that matter I just want anything that has actually got something to do with the FOOTBALL club not the boring background boredom were getting at the min. The kind of behind the scenes we want to see is players and coaches being interviewed about the new season not what bloomin pies r gonna be available! This is where the Echo could have done themselves a favour by going out and interviewing players. Is the Echo just banned from the training ground and SMS?? Or are they not aloud to talk to anyone to do with Southampton at all??

Plymouth:

Davis
Butterfield Fonte Jaidi Harding
Vassell Schneiderlin Hammond Puncheon
Lambert Barnard

Subs: Bialkowski Connolly Dickson Esajas Martin Mills Seaborne

Pards said Connors is the fittest player in the squad now but I still think he'll be an impact sub. I do believe there will be three new players with two in the starting line up but we'll have to wait and see.

I think AP will give Fonte the captaincy this year...I don't think Hammond is commanding enough. Fonte can inspire and lead from the back! As for Saints' chance of finishing top...I don't think AP has any excuses left if we don't finish in the top 2 this year. Davis / Bart Dickson / Harding Butterfield / Richardson Fonte / Seaborne Martin / Jaidi Hammond / Wotton Schneiderlin Puncheon / Oxlaide-Chamberlain Lallana / Mills / Holmes Ricky Barnard / Connolly

Since his appointment AP has signed
Murty
Jaidi
Harding
Fonte
Seaborne
Martin
Dickson
Richardson
Otsemobor
Papa Waigo
Antonio
Lambert
Hammond
Connolly
Barnard
Puncheon
Butterfield
of whom 4 have already left the club
I have left out Mellis
What that list has in common is that so far as I recall only Fonte might have been dicussed on here prior to signing; all the rest were 'unknowns'.
I expect that scenario to continue.
I would remind you that I too support Southampton FC and do not expect to be called names by a fellow supporter thankyou.

Too true! I'd be happy with just a weekly video report on the OS that gives us relative news about football that we don't have to pay for! I think the saints player is a great idea for fans, but to actually charge us (to listen to a game on the radio too) is a joke! Saints have enough money to broadcast live games on DAB radio for overseas fans surely.)

Fancy setting up our own online paper for the Saints?? Let's take the matter into our own hands! ;)

With the start of the season just over a week away and Saints 6 to 4 on to go up by any method am I the only one who is a little worried?

My concern is with the forwards and the fact that both Lambert and Barnard lack pace. On the evidence of last season they struggle to play well together and need a winger or quick forward to help them. Both of this type of player from last season have gone back to their parent clubs and do not appear to have been replaced as yet.

Then again maybe I worry too much and Mr Pardew has decided to give up some of the footballing flair and play a much more physical long ball type of game. After all this does appear what has been required in the past to get out of our league.

While I agree there is scope to strengthen – particularly with a winger/striker with some pace (preferably two), but I don't agree with people looking at the squad and being worried ahead of the new season.

How many teams in our division can boast a better, more settled spine than Davies, Fonte, Hammond and Lambert?

Add Puncheon, Sneiderlin and one of the league's other top scorers last season, Barnard, plus a very good back-up keeper, decent impact sub in Connelly, Harding and more.

I think the quality is definitely there. It's whether the confidence is there to get off to a good start – three or four wins in the first five games.

If we start well, I think with our support and squad we will be looking good.
