1:00pm Saturday 31st July 2010 in
SAINTS lost 4-2 to Reading in today's pre-season friendly match at St Mary's.
Gylfi Sigurdsson opened the scoring after 19 minutes, beating Kelvin Davis from the edge of the box, but Lee Barnard's sublime goal brought Saints level in the 35th minute.
Dean Hammond's header just after the break put Saints in front, but Reading were on level terms in the 69th minute, as Dan Harding gave away a penalty an Simon Church safely converted it.
The Championship side then took the lead in the 77th minute, as Church headed in Jobi McAnuff's cross.
Reading sealed their win five minutes from time, as former Saints loanee Michail Antonio fired home.

Not happy we've had the right pre-season yet again. I just don't understand why we don't play a full strength side last game before the season proper...I'll be disappointed if we don't hit the ground running from the first game...and I have a sneaky feeling we're not ready yet..hope I'm wrong.

And you are right about the pre-season schedule ...it has been a*** about face. I'm not complaining about going to Switzerland to get fit but about the match sequence. Bet they don't repeat it next year.

I have every faith in AP, the backing staff he has put together, and the squad (when their not ill).
Just please get some more pace !! and possibly a wild card like waigo who I thought was brilliant.

I'm sure that there will be a couple of signings soon but what I can't really get my head around is that whoever they are they will need games to integrate with the other players. But the club have been aware of the teams needs for weeks and weeks now....it almost makes one wonder what the point of pre-season is.?
Actually it only makes sense to me if the new signings are being bought in Especially as back-ups and will not therefore be the Stars whom we are all hoping for.

It looks like the pitch has not been prepared as well as last years, it seemed a bit dead and several times the ball bobbled badly, and several
places it cut up badly.
Butterfield and Dickson looked useful, Ox C went and hid late in the second half after a rollicking from Wotton, after looking lively when he came on. Connolly is good but was guilty of giving the ball away in vital areas, we know Barny can score if given a decent service. Jedi looked a little ponderous. Would have liked to have seen Bart for the second half. Martin looks to be improving rapidly. The rest were so so, and there was Pulis!

Mills I'm afraid was again fairly poor. He tries, but just doesn't position himself well, Chamberlain is a far more talented option.
The one thing that this game did tell us is that the youngsters are not good enough yet, but the acadamy is producing some talent, the young lad Reeves looks useful.
Antonio got a great reception, with crys of Sign him up A.P.
Forget the end result, if A.P hadn't made 7 changes in about 2 minutes then this would have stayed 2-1.
Good news on the pie front, much improved, and you geta bag to eat it from and not a stupid tray which was always to small.

Our Keepers looked better than Readings. (was watching the warm up and Readings first move was sideways to dive where as KD n BB both step forward at an angle). KD does not comand his box well enough, this showed in the second half when the youth team where defending. Also i belive from where i was sat that he shouldn't have allowed church to nip infront of him.
The back four also seemed to be lacking a leader especially on the set plays, and i noticed jahidi and fonté didn't pass there man accross so they could fill some very big holes. But when they had the ball looked very composed and looking for outlets outwide.
Midfield seemed very compact, a lack of width due to missing players i'm assumeing. Mills did well when with the ball but kept getting drawn in meaning a quick wide ball option was lost and he had the beating of his marker. Oxi seemed like a rabbit in the headlights today. He obviously has talent as lots on here say it and pards wouldnt pick him if not, but he tended to control and pass (about 50% sucsess rate). Where a few times he had the space to open his legs and cause the defender trouble. Centre of midfield was strong and impressive. DC had a poor game by his standards. Barnard played well , scored a gascognie esc goal flicking over the defenders head before burying it, though with ariel clearances he is a yellow card waiting to happen, he was not going for the ball, you could see him looking at the defender before jumping and giving freekicks away to regularly because of it. Although I seem to be negative here I'm not. That was against better opponents that we'll face in the league, there for little issue as listed are more highlighted. I belive with full strength team and wide guys hugging the line we will rip teams apart. But as earlier mentioned we do need alittle more strength in depth. Would have been nice to see how Bart controls the defence.

He was smiling and laughing, and looked very relaxed.
If he had been ill he would have been at home with his feet up, so would the others. Didn't see Adam or Jason, but that doesn't mean they weren't sitting inside

THATS THE THRR POSITIONS WE NEED TO STRENGTHEN WITH QUALITY, so they arent missed when they arent there!!

Pilkington (also back up striker! - plays for huddersfield, young, big strong and gets goals - or Arron Wilbraham MK Dons).
And QUALITY CM - better than carter hopefully!!
Frimbong would be a good adition on top of these three positions and means wotton would be gone!!
TIME TO MOVE IN THE TRANSFER MARKET THIS WEEK, even if it does mean paying a bit more money - we cant take the chance, 3 new players will lift the whole team and club!!!

except to say he is still looking. Yes,
it would ideal to have new players in
time for the new season but AP is not
going to be rushed.His judgement to
date on signings has been spot on
and I think we will be satisfied when
he has made his choice/s.AP was
hopefull that the injured players
would be ok by next Sat. except for
Lallana whose injury is taking longer
to respond to treatment than hoped.
He is hoping for a good turnout -
remember we can make all the
difference with our support
especially during difficult patches
when silence or jeers will NOT help
the team.
I believe we will gain promotion but
this must not be taken for granted
- there are other teams who are
just as hungry for success as we are
and they will all be wanting to prove
a point when they play us as other
posters have said in the past.

I sense though his wage expectations may have been too high as I presume they were with Millwall where negotiations for his transfer also broke down.
I have a feeling he will end up with a Premiership or a Championship side & could see him moving to a Club like Blackpool who have only made one signing since being promoted to the Premiership.
Has anyone else heard anything as to Darren Carter as one has to think he is looking elsewhere ....shame if this is true as I think ,with the experience he has had, he would have been a good signing.

I sense though his wage expectations may have been too high as I presume they were with Millwall where negotiations for his transfer also broke down.
I have a feeling he will end up with a Premiership or a Championship side & could see him moving to a Club like Blackpool who have only made one signing since being promoted to the Premiership.

Pards hasn't shown his cards yet, happy with the performance of the firsts he sent out for the first 69mins when leading at 2-1 he rang the changes. Should be enough to make Peter Reid sweat.
Injuries aplenty in the squad, Adam out for the first game of the season and we wait for a few additions wondering if a budget is to be shelled out and getting everyone a bit tentative and nervy.
Twitter feed didn't do it for me I hit the pit after kick off but will be up for the return of The Big Dave next week..

The starting 11 today were very solid, only weak link if Jason and Lala are not fit is Mills and Chamberlain, but as much as I hate to say this, Mills is probably the better of the two.

Half the Saints first team had Reading 2-1 down at 69 mins before Pards brought on the young ones The other half of the first team were in the box smiling.
Get the feeling Alan Pardew will have his day back in the prem. Saints Fans love Pards now but the first five results of the season will tell if Nicola Cortese has or needs patience or a plan B or if the faith in Pards is justified.. COYR Sashes

first time ive gotten to see a game in a long time.
Our Keepers looked better than Readings. (was watching the warm up and Readings first move was sideways to dive where as KD n BB both step forward at an angle). KD does not comand his box well enough, this showed in the second half when the youth team where defending. Also i belive from where i was sat that he shouldn't have allowed church to nip infront of him.
The back four also seemed to be lacking a leader especially on the set plays, and i noticed jahidi and fonté didn't pass there man accross so they could fill some very big holes. But when they had the ball looked very composed and looking for outlets outwide.
Midfield seemed very compact, a lack of width due to missing players i'm assumeing. Mills did well when with the ball but kept getting drawn in meaning a quick wide ball option was lost and he had the beating of his marker. Oxi seemed like a rabbit in the headlights today. He obviously has talent as lots on here say it and pards wouldnt pick him if not, but he tended to control and pass (about 50% sucsess rate). Where a few times he had the space to open his legs and cause the defender trouble. Centre of midfield was strong and impressive. DC had a poor game by his standards. Barnard played well , scored a gascognie esc goal flicking over the defenders head before burying it, though with ariel clearances he is a yellow card waiting to happen, he was not going for the ball, you could see him looking at the defender before jumping and giving freekicks away to regularly because of it. Although I seem to be negative here I'm not. That was against better opponents that we'll face in the league, there for little issue as listed are more highlighted. I belive with full strength team and wide guys hugging the line we will rip teams apart. But as earlier mentioned we do need alittle more strength in depth. Would have been nice to see how Bart controls the defence.

Good Lads.. do your best if you get a chance and don't worry Pards won't be throwing you all in there at once and there are thousands of fans willing you all to do well.

In the matchday programme, Pards said he was still looking for 2 - 3 players to strengthen the squad. Daniel Frimpong , a 18 year old mid-fielder at Arsenal, has been linked with Saints. I watched him playing in the Arsenal vs Inter match on Sky last night and he looks a very handy player who, if we did get him, would be great cover for Deano and who would be competition for the postition - That's what Pards is after - backup and competition for the various positions.

Many local families have naval connections and so it is reasonable to assume that some opted to to go there.
When you add to that the fact that they were playing Fulham, which is hardly considered to be a great attraction and unlikely to bring many fans, it could be argued that the attendance was not bad.
Saints had about 2,000 more, for a match against a comparatively local side, who brought a good crowd with them.
There were no rival attractions in Southampton that were 'one off' and likely to reduce the attendance at St Marys'.
When you take into consideration the current financial climate, I guess that was also a factor for both games attracting a smaller crowd than was hoped.
