Bookies offer odds on potential successors to Pardew

Paul Tisdale Paul Tisdale

BOOKMAKERS are already naming the men they think most likely to takeover from Alan Pardew at Southampton.

Ex-Saint and current Exeter manager Paul Tisdale, was the early favourite, at 9/2, before being usurped by Gianfranco Zola.

He was linked with the job before Pardew took over in July 2009, and has guided the Grecians from Non-League football to League One.

Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe is at 6/1 to make the short journey up the A31, while caretaker boss Dean Wilkins and ex-Middlesbrough manager Gareth Southgate are both priced at 8/1.

Other names in the fold include Alan Curbishley (14/1), Kevin Blackwell (16/1) and ex-Southampton striker Iain Dowie, who is priced at 25/1.

Steve Coppell, Chris Coleman (11/1), Gary Megson (20/1), Phil Brown and and Paul Ince make up the list of favourites to take up the St. Mary's hot seat.

More left-of-field names such as Ruud Gullit, Sven Goran-Eriksson and Glenn Hoddle have also been mentioned as potential successors, although rather unlikely.

Updated odds:

Gianfranco Zola 4/1
Paul Tisdale 5/1
Eddie Howe 6/1
Glenn Hoddle 7/1

Please let it be Iain Dowie.

Poor old Pardew, I see a career as a tv pundit on the cards. You win 4-0 and get the sack?

Given the timing of the sacking I would suggest that the replacement is already unpacking his bags in his new Marchwood office. This was predicted by DH, club historian, four weeks ago. He had it from a reliable source that AP and NC did not get on well together and that a parting of the ways was imminent.

With greatest respect to Paul Tisdale, Eddie Howe and others, these are not the calibre of manager we need at the club.
All of them are great managers at Conf,L2,L1 with proven track record. We are building for a premiership challenge in a couple of years time and so need somebody who has experience at that level.
Taking somebody with less experience than Pardew would just not work. The goals we want to achieve do not allow for somebody to learn on the job.
Shame that Pardew has gone, but to be honest I suspect the writing was on the wall at end of last season. Poor start to this season finished him off - Saturday's result just came too late.

Doubt it will be Martin O'Neil as he is "quite" outspoken and NC seems to dislike this sort of character (hope i'm proved wrong though!!!)

sw = iron-lord so maybe it is Martin; its certainly an intriguing situation but I cannot help to feel sorry for AP as he did a "very good" job, all the best in the future AP

All the names being branded about are not as high profile as AP without the obvious exeptions. Do you really think a Martin ONeil etc would contemplate dropping down two divisions to take on Saints with a Chairman who is turning out to be another Rupert Lowe. AP did make some strange decisions but dont all managers. I think he would of got us there. Love to see O' Neil but cant see it !!!

mummsie says...
2:06pm Mon 30 Aug 10

Bob the Builder, Andy Pandy, Zippy, Fireman Sam..... at least i've heard of these and are more high profile than those mentioned above! LOL Ian Dowie is that man to take over!

Ross96 says...

Pardew was sacked because several support staff based at the club's training ground have recently resigned, claiming an inability to work with Pardew.

O'Neil would do a Hoddle and high-tail it the minute a Prem League Top 6 became available, waste of time. Coppell is a bottler, Dowie has been sacked more times than an NFL quaterback, Zola has achieved nothing, I asked curbs in Bernidorm over the summer if he fancied the job and he said and i quote "it would be difficult"

Tisdale or Howe are a step backwards. I don't think people realise how close we were to appointing Cotterill in May, I'm surprised that he hasn't been mentioned by the bookies so far......

How come nobody has got on this? It's got to be Shearer. He's said that despite his successful media work he wants to be a manager one day. Surely a club with money (which hopefully we still are) with the potential we've got, what a great opportunity - he takes us through the leagues and then he's the Messiah. He's availiable so could be anounced tomorrow. I'm having £20 @ 16-1. I do want to say however that I am appauled at AP's dismisal. I think he's done a great job, home & away I missed 2 games last season and it was one of my top 5 favourite seasons since I started going in 1966. He's not made a bad signing in my opinion. He p....ed me off on occassions only playing one up front and putting 10 men behind the ball at corners but in all I think he's done a great job. After Bristol on Saturday I thought ..hear we go-at last - and then this!
Thanks for last season AP and I'll buy you a drink out of my £320 winnings if I met you again, best of luck in the future AP.

Looks like everyone is on the list except Lord Lucan and Shergar. And please on a serious note not a complete novice with no experience like Le Tiss or Shearer(except getting Newcastle relegated) - being a great player is completely and utterly meaningless. We need an experienced manager who fitted the bill like Pardew did. I think it would be complete and utter lunacy to appoint Le Tiss

Balders76 says...

I am so sick of this guess the manager crap. It seems like we spend longer on this topic than actually talking about the football. I had hoped that the days of changing manager at least once a year were a thing of the past. That said it is here again and I will throw my opinion in the ring - I would take Shearer. I know he doesn't have experience but he is a smart fella, a winner, a legend and must have some very good contacts in the game. He would also raise our profile which has to be a good thing. A risk? yes but we have just sacked a decent manager 3 games in a day before deadline day so it seems taking a gamble isn't a foreign concept to NC.

The reason it won't be Martin O Neil is not because he is outspoken nd so won't get on with NC but because he is a top class manager and we are in DIV 1. We really need to lower our expectations a little. I would loved to be proved wong here.

Who slagged him off? Afew muppets that you will find at every club. You will have them too - when Howe loses a few matches, as will happen then you will get them say " Howe has taken us as far as he can". Most football fans are a little less knee jerk than that. Most of us were unhappy with today's news.

hi fellows,
sorrry about saking pardew..i feel i need to explain why i sacked him
reasons are as follows..
1) tactically inept
2)failed to get promoted with a war chest
3)boring,tiresome post match interviews.(i have been informed they were worse than burleys?)
4)has reverted this great club to long ball kick and rush football.
5)tried it on with my missus.
6)greame souness wants the job.

Eddie Howe's odds are a joke he should be at least 10,000/1. When Pardew joined this outfit they were not far from the drop zone. He turned things around and in a VERY short time and almost did the impossible in reaching the playoffs. I'm a Bournemouth fan and witnessed 1st hand our 2-0 defeat at Southampton. What I also witnessed were the this years league one champions - Yes Southampton. Fact is Saints did not play that well against Bournemouth but I saw enough. Pardew was the man with the plan. BIG BIG MISTAKE. Who ever made this crazy call does not have the interests of Southampton Football Club at Heart. IT IS'NT DISNEY LAND BOYS

Saints are looking for experience in the Premiership and promotion from the Championship hence my predictions of Brown or Mowbray...end of discussion!
