Sacking Alan Pardew is a crazy decision by Southampton, says Mike O'Callaghan

Mike O'Callaghan Mike O'Callaghan

"It's a crazy decision, and a crazy wrong decision as well."

Those are the words of Southampton Independent Supporters Association chairman Mike O'Callaghan in the wake of Alan Pardew's shock departure this morning.

"I don't understand it, just like I don't understand a lot of Nicola Cortese's decisions," he said.

"We had stability again, now it's been taken away.

"It beggars belief.

"I would say 90 per cent of the fans would not agree with Pardew's sacking and will be sad that he's gone."

"Pardew has been very harshly treated, he did a good job last season and won us a trophy.

"He's only had three games this season!

"Why not sack him last week, why wait until we've won 4-0 away.

"I wouldn't have agreed with sacking him if we'd lost 4-0 at Bristol Rovers.

"At least give him until the end of November."

Why does the echo always dig out this fool? Who does he represent? He'll probably tell you Ince should be next... Personally myself and fellow fans saw this coming when oneil left villa. We shall see

Our club is a laughing stock once again. I feel like renouncing my life-long support. Cortese is an idiot and we'll never get a manager as good as Pardew in League One. I for one would like to thank Alan for all his efforts at the Saints...

As alot of people have already said, this has been coming for a while - it seemed clear at the end of the last season that it was 'last chance saloon', poor start to the season finished him off.
Personally, I think Pardew is an excellent manager, but is the sort of person who needs a fair bit of time to bring his teams together. Just look at the way he conducts signings for an example - leaving it until the last minute to be absolutely sure the decision is right.
With Marcus & Nicola's plan, it was very structured and very clear - AP missed the objective last year, although many would say the objective to be too tough.
Swiss business is extremely clinical - that is how such a small country has become one of the most prosperous in Europe. They work on giving very clear objectives, if they are not achieved they are not scared to make change.
Sadly (for AP) this is exactly what has happened at the club. We must not allow ourselves to forget that SFC is not a 'toy' for ML's family and NC. They expect to increase it's value, which can only be done through footballing success.
There lies the big difference between them and the likes of Sheikh Mansour (at MCFC) and Abramovich (CFC).

Thank god for the idiot Cortese. He was idiot enough to get ML(may he rest in peace) to invest in the club, then he was idiot enough to allow a man like ML to talk him into running the club, then he was idiot enough to emplot AP to do a job which he did not do and now he is idiot enogh to try and rectify his error, still I suppose without this idiot we would all be supporting Totton as we would have no other local club.PS Pards was good manager just not good enough for us, i wish him and his family all the best in the future.

Cortese is an unmitigated disaster for the club. Ridiculous ban on photographers, outrageous ticket booking fees, scrapping of season ticket instalment plans at no notice, banning the Echo who quite correctly predicted the demise of Pardew, sacking a manager four games into the season after a 4-0 win. Time to go Cortese and "give us our club back".

Come on then Eaglespark, oh great fount of football knowledge, when you have got bored with being all 'look at me, I was right!', how about letting us have the benefit of your brilliance and tell us all who should manage the club and how?

I love football fans - so quick to judge.

Personally - out of the two, Cortese or (any) manager - I think that Cortese is by far the most important as this stage in Saint's history. Pardew did well over the last year with his signings, and general motivation most of the time. But plenty of fans have, at times, questioned his tactics - particularly at home where the support is more unforgiving than at at many other clubs.

So time to say thank you and goodbye and ask who's next. Hopefully the words about wanting to take some time to find the best person is a smokescreen while contracts are being signed for the new person to take up the reins. I don't really care who it is, providing they can motivate the players.

However, it would be interesting to see a so-called top-flight manager to see if they really do make much difference. Or at least more difference than the money to buy top-flight players.

Banning of Pies! - this is possibly due to the fact that in the land of the Swiss, as well as in Austria and Germany there are no pies. Steak, pork, chicken, mushroom, apple, you name it - no pies!

There have been many comments about the "crazy time to sack AP with only one day of the transfer window remaining" - but what I'm wondering is - who was AP going to sign? I don't think he had anyone lined up - and to me that's a sackable offence if you've been gievn licence and funds to go out and strengthen the squad for the season ahead. We all know we're at least a couple of creative players light!
Bad luck for AP - yes we won the JPT; but we didn't make the play-offs. Whether that's AP's fault, I don't know - but I think there are many more motivational managers out there and that's what we need now as we're stuck with the team we have (not half bad for this league - but not guaranteed top two finish) - Saints need someone to stir the blood - stiffen the sinews and frighten the opposition - and Quick!! I think we should all defer judgement on Nicola until we know who is taking over from Pards. It's going to have to be someone impressive to justify the change of manager at this stage of the season.

I just wonder whether it was about to happen before the sudden death of Markus but delayed (for obvious reasons) for a couple of weeks. I thought it odd that Pards did not speak at the memorial service for Markus at St Mary's Church (correct me if I'm wrong about that). Was that because Pards' own fate was already decided, although not yet communicated to him?

However, I feel sorry for Pards - I think he did a good job last season and should have been given longer this season to prove his ability. We did poorly in our first 2 league games but that was, in my view, partly due to the absence/lack of match fitness of Ricky, Adam and Punch. Even now they're not fully fit. Saturday's performance and result were outstanding and yet Pards was shown the door the next day.

Good luck, Pards, and thanks for what you achieved last season. The JPT final, with 50,000 Saints fans at Wembley, was a massive uplift for the club and the fans.

Back to Nicola - he (in his own way as much as Markus) was the saviour of SFC. Without them we probably wouldn't have a club to support, certainly not one with a really promising future. So let's not rush to judgement. What Pards' sacking does tell me is that Nicola and presumably Markus's family are seriously committed to getting Saints back into the top flight. We shouldn't be complaining about that!

Football's great. We moan when clubs go into administration, that they don't abide by normal business rules. But when they do - retaining brand rights, seeking non core business revenue (such as car park fees) and culling high level management for under performing - we harp on about owners not knowing anything about football and how chairmen should remember that football is more than a business.

Strange...
