Wilkins surprised by Pardew sacking

Dean Wilkins Dean Wilkins

SAINTS caretaker boss Dean Wilkins admitted today that Alan Pardew’s sacking came as a surprise to him.

The assistant manager has been placed in temporary charge of team affairs after Pardew, first team coach Wally Downes and goalkeeping coach Stuart Murdoch were relieved of their duties.

Wilkins took charge of training at Staplewood this morning, before addressing the media.

The 48-year-old, who was brought into the club by Pardew last year, said this morning’s news had come as a shock to him.

“I was surprised,” he said.

“I’ve not even really had time to think about it, because the job I’ve been asked to do is to prepare the team.

“So we’ve literally got on with that this morning.

“I got the call just to come straight to the training ground and take care of the squad, which is exactly what I’m trying to do.

“The chairman spoke to me and has asked me to take care of it for the foreseeable future.

“How long that is I have no idea, but the only thing that I will guarantee is that I will do the best job I possibly can.”

Back to the football, they say 'it's only a game' but what a game.
It will be very interesting to see the line-up to-morrow; he will go out to win it with style.
Also how will the crowd react to NCs arrival.? Will he attend.?

If Nc gets booed it will be an absolute joke.
This guy has a vision and should be supported all the way.

Pardew is gone, let's move on...let's all stop pretending we can run a football club better than him.

People need to realise the only reason we are hear is NC. He is the one that helped ML (rip) to buy us.

Get a grip, pardew would have walked as soon as a big club came sniffing, like Reading.

Great "get out clause" being the caretaker boss, wish the boys well, but my worst nightmare would be for Mr wilkins to get the job on a permanent basis.
I rated pardew, he has now gone, we move on and as supporters have no choice but to support the next man.
I just hope whoever it is ,gets the support of all the fans to carry this club forward, and the boo brigade stay off his back long enough to allow him to settle in.
Cortese now has a big point to prove, so its over to you nicola.
How much time do you think the new man will get ? It will have to be someone ,who thinks like nicola, has the same attitude as nicola, got it,its nicola..............

very disappointed, Pardew may not have been the best but he did us proud last year and this year we have been better than anyone we have played. a couple of years ago along with pompey we became a farce of the football world and I was enjoyng the stability we have now got. The challenge is there NC you now need to prove this was a right decision. You wont keep attendances of 21,000 + if we dont hit the floor running.

As much as I'd love it if O'Neil was the next manager, I think we Saints fans need to wake up a little. At the end of the day we are in the 3rd tier of English football. Why would O'Neil drop from a top 6 Premier league club to us.

franiow says...
5:30pm Mon 30 Aug 10

O'Neill would be good. Ain't going to happen. If NC can't deal with straight-talking English managers, he will pick a foreign manager. I want to see attractive football at St Mary's and promotion. If we get that then NC is back to god-like status. Otherwise... Let's wait and see. We have no choice but to support whoever it is...no booing please.

Alan Pardew was sacked, along with his 2 assistants, early on Sunday evening as a direct result of problems at the Staplewood Training Centre. It was unexpected by them.
The Club is embarking on a search for replacements that is expected to take several weeks.

Why did Pardew and Co get the boot. As always the devil is in the small print. The announcement says 'These targets for sustained and significant progress embrace both the first team and the football development and support centre as integrated, co-operative units.'
Read into this that there was disagreement between NC and AP re integration and cooperation, with AP wanting more control and hey presto off he goes with his two coaches. DW presumably did not agree with AP and stays.

Woke up this morning to a massive hail strorm - should have known something was up. Can't believe AP is gone, I thought he had things going in the right direction. I can't think of one signing he made that hasn't helped the team improve. This only makes sense if we get a big name replacement such as Keegan, Strachan, O'Neill etc. (Please not Sven). Can't see those 3 being yes men though, so while I have faith in NC this is eerily familiar to the Lowe days. Does Clive Woodward have his coaching license yet?

Is merlin available ?
Weve suddenly gone from a managerial position that would be fought over to a job with an expectation attached that cant be garunteed by anyone.
In football you need luck, this club needs a massive dose of it.
The success that nicola craves, is just not acheived that quickly, thats what it appears hes not getting.

looking at the situation from my home in france, i would say the following. Last year the team should have at least got ot the play offs, with the cash that was given to the manager. Poor results in key games last year cost us a play off place. For example exeter away. One of several games that highlighted that when things wernt wrong there is or was no plan B. many have already said at the games this year Ap was showing no signs of being able to read the game and make changes if the team isn't winning. The pre season was at best poor and hardley provided the spring board to start the season well. Last season NC and Ml had a very short time to get a manager in place to ensure we didn't get relegated again! Now having worked with AP for a season the vision needs a different management team to take us forward. I can see the rational behind this. My fear over the last few weeks is that we will play the same way as last season, but that teams will no what to expect and unless we can surprise them with new tatics, it will be hard to put together a string of results that the sqaud suggests we should achieve.
Look at the facts the charmain with ML's money and support has the club on a sound footing, and i am sure the vision to ensure we have the correct management to win promottion this season.
before anyone says why should a johney foreinger comment on SFc. I was a season ticket holder before coming to France, my father goes to every game, and I get to as many as I can, including every game Saints have ever palyed at wembley.

For the record no Cortese No Club remember. If Markus commended his integrity and passion to get the job done then I'm with him all the way. Alan Pardew will be much loved for the ride to the Paint Pot and getting professional structure back into the set up but ultimately failed to show consistent ability to adjust and beat defensive teams. I supported him loud and proud but did expect The Chairman to have a sharp Plan B either early this season or at Christmas because failure at the end of the season is not acceptable.

The fact is we have no idea what was said behind the scenes the man is driven passionately to take Saints to The Premiership on time in the name of Markus Liebherr so for goodness sakes show a bit of gratitude and support Nicola Cortese 100%

Yes, I'm upset AP has gone, the timing is pants and my initial reaction is that we're f**ked.

However, whilst thinking about this on Bournemouth beach whilst drinking copious amounts of Special Brew, I have come to the same conclusion as others that NC is doing what he feels is best for the club.

I have a level 2 coaching badge, but that still doesn't give me a platform to preach on how to run a football club. The truth is, only a handful of people really know what's been going on behind the scenes. I will certainly cheer on my team tomorrow, and leave the political shenanigans to those who get paid to look after them.

This club in its current position might just be the massive challenge that a man like Martin O’Neil would relish. Imagine it, promotion from Div 1 to Prem in successive seasons!!!!! Ok, he would then bugger off to Man U but what a ride it would be.

To: saint til I die and Nicola is God. Our disagreement was over whether we should support Saints under the management of Pardew or some other guy. You won. Congratulations. You are happy. Now chapter 2. Who will the new manager be and will you support him through thick and thin.? The problem is, even if you do, there will be others posting on here saying that they don't and so a new cycle of charge and countercharge begins. Is that good for the club.? Have a nice day.
It doesn't really matter now, whatever our views, the main aim is to funnel our efforts to the good of the Club, no harm in putting your varied views across but no point in personal abuse or gloating because you got it right, just say, told you so, and move on.

HAVEN'T LAUGHED SO MUCH FOR A LONG TIME: 2 REASONS.
1. I told you this was going to happen 2 weeks ago, and several aggressive mor0ns accused me of being out of touch and anti-saints.
2. I have read with great mirth the chameleon statements from the l0sers who LUVVED Pardew last week, now they agree that nickers is doing the right thing. WELL, WHICH ONE IS IT?

Just when we all started going in the same direction, something happens to split us all apart. This can still be a great season for us, we can either help that to happen by supporting the team as they play, sincerely and whole heartedly. Or we can let disruption and confusion overcome us and do a "typical Saints".
Good luck Dean, your responsibilities are now tenfold.
