Matthew Le Tissier hits out at claims about Alan Pardew's departure

CLAIMS Alan Pardew was sacked as Saints boss because of poor staff morale and player unrest have been branded “bizarre” by club legend Matt Le Tissier.

Pardew, 49, was axed early yesterday morning, after being summoned to a meeting with chairman Nicola Cortese and members of his executive committee at St Mary’s.

Also shown the door were first team coach Wally Downes and goalkeeping coach Stuart Murdoch.

No specific reason was given by Saints for the decision to dismiss the trio.

However, the Daily Echo spoke to sources close to Cortese and the executive committee yesterday, who claimed Pardew had been sacked because of concern over morale at the club’s Staplewood training ground.

For a video of the top stories in today's Daily Echo, click the front page.

Certain members of the playing squad were also said to be unhappy with Pardew and his methods.

But Le Tissier poured scorn on that reasoning, after a scintillating Saints display at the Memorial Stadium at the weekend.

“It certainly didn’t look like any of the players had any problem with the manager when they hammered Bristol Rovers, so it seems a bizarre thing for someone to suggest,” Le Tissier told the Echo last night.

It was also suggested there were concerns regardings the integration between the first team and the new football development and support centre.

Finally, it was also suggested last night that the timing of the sacking, after a 4-0 away victory, at Bristol Rovers, was intentional, with the club wanting to show it was not a decision based on results.

The Echo contacted Pardew yesterday, but he declined to comment on his sacking or the allegations.

In a statement on their website, Saints said: “Following a review of the current status in and around the first team, the club has decided that, to achieve its well known targets, it is essential to make changes to the first team management and coaching.

“These targets for sustained and significant progress embrace both the first team and the football development & support centre as integrated, co-operative units.

“Consequently, the first team manager, Alan Pardew, first team coach, Wally Downes, and goalkeeping coach, Stuart Murdoch, have been relieved of their duties with immediate effect.

“The Club wishes them well for the future.

“While we have commenced our careful evaluation of our candidates and longer term requirements, Dean Wilkins has taken on the caretaker role for the first team and he will be assisted by Martin Hunter, the Under 21 coach.

“We recognise that frequent changes to the football management are unlikely to assist in the winning of trophies and promotions.

“However, we are taking these steps to achieve our aims, which we share with all supporters, to get promoted this season, and secure long term stability and progress for our football operations.”

Cortese has a bit of the Michael Corleone about him. When the Godfather died he became pretty damned ruthless.

I think that Pardew was a 7 out of 10.
Good at attracting talent, average at getting the best of his players.

Cleraly there was not harmony between NC & AP and we really do need to all be working together to gain the success at the club that we all crave.

Whatever you do Nicola please seek good advice at this critical stage - if you haven't already done so.

As was said already we will never know what went on leading up to Pards sacking.
Rowester sums it all up in his post. NC will be a hero or a villan come the end of the season. I personaly think that it's a big gamble to do what he has done. It smacks of Lowe.
All i want is our dignity back and The Club to be the family orientated club it once was.

I didn't comment on any of this yesterday as I was a bit confused by it all, but it wouldn't surprise me if there are factors other than the performance of the first team behind it. Certainly, I've heard reports that there were specific 'non-football' reasons for AP's departure from West Ham. Nicola will never reveal the reasons and I expect Pards is bound by a confidentiality agreement, so neither will he.

But I can't feel too bad about it as I imagine Pards has got the best part of a million quid's worth of compensation and our squad is now so strong I think my two-year-old daughter (who is currently jumping up and down and shouting 'I like goo-goo') could manage us to the title, so everyone will be ok. (She's available for the job btw, if you're reading this Nicola.)

We shall know tonight what effect it all has had on the players, they are going to need our backing, that is for sure, this game has taken on a new importance, if you have any feeling of loyalty for the Club, you have to be there and make you feelings known, no one person is bigger than the Club wheteher it be a deposed manager, or the individual charged with the running of the Club. If le God is right, it should have no effect on the team, but our apathy would. I appreciate that there is a considerable difference of opinion about what has gone on, nothing we can do about that, time to move on, look forward with anticipation to a new managerial appointment, and whatever comes as a result, hopefully a renewed attack on the ladder and promotion.

1. Did the Echo really conjure up this whole article based on a short quote from Le Tiss that showed he was as surprised about the firing as almost everyone else. Le Tiss is just being used to stir it up by the Echo.

The problem is we can all speculate as to why he was sacked or who his successor might be, but as with players coming in does anybody really get it right, I'm sure that at the end of the day we will have a good experienced manager at the helm to take us through the leagues to where NC and ML want us to be, so people like tisdale and howe (although good in this league) I really cant see as being a realistic option. As it was said when ML bought the club his way of working is to have the best management at all levels and he never amassed his fortune by keep changing them - ok it appears that for whatever reason NC didn't quite get this call right but we have still progressed so he never got it totally wrong.
All the talk of getting a "yes-man" does not hold water on its own because we all know of people like this at our places of work and they are too indecisive to manage efficiently, what is needed is a strong personality, but one that will work within the setup that NC is creating to bring kids through seamlessly to the first team. Dont forget that the setup has evolved around AP and perhaps he was not comfortable with it or the personnel whereas that will be all the new man has ever known.
Put your trust in NC as he on record as saying this is his baby and i'm sure he will get the right "nanny" to look after it.
Nobody ever said the ride would be smooth but sit back and enjoy it and trust the man at the top, none of us know him personally so how can we speculate as to what he is really like, except that I think has genuinely got the best interests of the club that we love at heart.

On a bbc website, whom I think are a little more factual than some other media sources, it refers to last season when Markus, god rest his sole, what a hero, wanted pardew moved on, and cortese put a good case together in favour of keeping A.P. charlton fans had said he was well known for throwing his toys out of the pram. I think that any man who can make it big in the swiss banking industry, would not make rash decisions, and would conduct in a thoughtfull and careful way when dismissing one of his top members of staff. I feel for A.P but also have full trust in N.C, that he would have done this with the best interest of the club, which he refers to as `his baby`. Gone are the days when we would lose good managers (such as Strachan) as they were not allowed to spend on the team. and it was a way of a chairman trying to show the blame of poor play to be the fault of managers not a Chairman who was trying to squeeze as many pennies out of the club as possible.
I think that N.C has done the right thing at the right time, and may have even carried out on of M.L`s last wishes, as a mark of respect for the great man. Whoever comes in toi replace A.P will be a manager with drive, determination and a wealth of experience in football managment. And can we please not forget that although M.L was the man who paid for our club, N.C was the man who convinced him to inject the cash needed to not only save our club, but to bring it up to be one of the most envied in modern footbal, with cash not just being spent on players, but the whole infrastructure, to enable us to be a viable business, not just a rich mans play toy. A.P has gone, but not for no reason and we may never know the reasons, but we should all know that our club will be as good or better with whoever Mr Cortese gets in.

The fact that the club statement mentions "the first team and the football development & support centre as integrated, co-operative units" before it even tells us that Pardew and co have been sacked speaks volume. Of course it's all speculation, but I would suggest that Pardew wasn't happy with the role of the "Football Development & Support Centre".
It has 4 responsibilities - The Academy, Scouting, Sports Medicine & Equipment Procurement.
I assume that Pardew wouldn't get too excited about Sports Medicine & Equipment Procurement and the Academy sounds like it's in pretty safe hands, which leaves Scouting.
Given that we're in a transfer window and Pardew was looking to add to his squad I suspect that he wasn't happy with the Scouting system. Either that or there was a clash of personalities with Les Reed - the head of the Football Development & Support Centre.

As every Saints fan knows MLT is second to no-one when is comes to footballing skills.

And as every Saints fan knows he is second to everyone when it comes to judgement of character - as evidenced by the ludicrous takeover bid he was involved in.

So it is an easy story for the Echo to write up. The Echo is not first and foremost a Saints supporting newspaper. Their main agenda for the last six months or so has been to do down Cortese, and it looks like that isn't going to change any time soon.

I would prefer to trust Cortese than the Echo, and when the full story leaks out in a year or two we will be able to judge whether this decisive action was justified.

In the meantime let's hope we are able attract someone with ability who shares the vision of all Saints fans, Cortese and the Liebherr family.

Any manager should be able to win this league with the players we have, all we need is a bit of positivity around the place.

I don't think NC is that weak but if he was I'd prefer him to step down now. Don't get me wrong, I don't want him gone. My point is I don't want a limp biscuit in charge. If he can't take the heat of the fans when they feel he's made a mistake then he's in the wrong job.

The vast majority of fans who post on here think APs sacking was a mistake according to the echo vote. I suspect there will be some booing and jeering tonight and NC has to expect that.

Some people have been asking not to boo but paying fans they have every right to voice their opinion and concern as those few who are pleased with the decision. However, for the sake of the future of the club and getting behind the team, those of you who want to vocalise your dissatisfaction do it tonight at this cup game that doesn't really matter (as opposed to the league and promotion). After tonight you've made your point. Come Saturday we get back to the league campaign, we forget it and we move on united in supporting the club and NC.

Up the saints!!
I think you are right, NC would not just act on a whim. This has been on the cards for a while. There is alot more to this than meets the eye. NC has the future of Saints close to his heart and would not want to do anything to wreck this. We need to get behind the team and trust NC, and not listen to idle gossip. Thankyou AP for what you have done for our club, and good luck for the future. We need to move onwards and upwards together. Up the Saints !

well said WinchSaint. AP's days were numbered we all new that. Were we supposed to wait til Xmas to see if uppermid table would be OK? NC wants drive and determination and is a business man with business in mind and giving ML (god rest his sole) the return he deserves.
I liked AP, but he seemed to blame bad pitches, teams shutting up shop, pressure at Saint Marys as reasons we didnt win. If Chelsea, man U etc can win week in week out with same pressures for their divisions, Saints should be achieving the same in this div and those are NC's and our expectations.
Someone even suggested Ray Wilkins, a man with the apparent passion of a childs bucket and spade.
For me, NC convinced ML to buy us and he should be acknowledged and trusted as much as Markus.
Only way is up - exicitng times to be a saint!

Avery well constructed and thought out statement. I myself was pro AP and was shocked when he was sacked, but I had to ask the question why? I hate change, especially at this time as it creates instability. But now it is done and we have to move on.

Been reading the attached comments with interest and whilst I can understand some of the rationale for AP's dismissal, I am still both surprised and a little disappointed. There must have been some serious going's on for him to be binned after such a comfortable victory on Saturday.

I just hope that NC has someone in mind and hasn't binned AP (et al) with a view to finding someone, as that could take a while. I know that someone above speculated that AP had bee tapped up by Villa - wouldn't it be funny if MO'N has been tapped up by us!!

I think we'll see a probable continental approach now, with a new manager (and support staff) working to a Director of Football, probably someone who's a good buddy of NC. What's the name of that Swiss chap who managed Spurs?!!

Excellent, I'll gladly give you some answers. Being so far away of course must be hard for you to keep up.

The coaches were sacked so of course there is going to be some compensation heading their way. When clear it's the right decision we will all think £1million was a bargain to bring back attractive successful football.

The 8 out of 10 fans you talk about may only be from this internet forum, where a lot of fans are over seas supporters, have you considered that the people who hated Pardew still went to support the team and chairman? And what do you mean 'What if they don't turn up again?' Who are you talking about?

I trust that Nicola will make the right decisions for our club so the next manager WILL be better than Alan Pardew.
