Is Saints' manager the hottest seat in English football?

THE figures below show why the Saints manager’s job is one of the warmest hot-seats in English football.

Following on from Alan Pardew’s Bank Holiday departure, the club are now searching, remarkably, for their 13th permanent boss of the Millennium.

Pardew was dismissed having only been in charge for 49 league games, but that was still more than six of his seven predecessors managed.

Given the exceptional turnover of managers at Saints in recent years, not one boss since Chris Nicholl left in 1991 has completed 100 league games in charge.

The nearest was George Burley, who was in charge for 99 games – including two in the play-offs – prior to leaving for the Scotland job in January 2008.

Four managers have failed to even last 20 league games in charge.

The shortest reign was just the 13 games Paul Sturrock managed in 2003/04 and early 2004/05 prior to his departure which was announced as mutual consent.

Up until 1991, though, Saints had only had three managers in 36 years!

Ted Bates was in charge from 1955-1973, followed by Lawrie McMenemy serving 12 years and Chris Nicholl serving six.

The late, great Alan Ball used to tel everyone who asked that all managers really need three years in charge before they can be judged a success or failure.

Amazingly, no Saints manager has lasted that long in charge since Nicholl two decades ago. The best was Dave Jones (two years and seven months).

Pardew was sacked having won 53 per cent of his 64 league and cup games.

Hottest hot-seat of the all...?

We need someone in charge who has the potential to do well, not a has-been who has failed in the past. Why do we want managers that no-one else wants? Martin O'Neil has a proven track record and I dont think has ever been sacked. Eddie Howe, an up and coming manager who seems to have the nack of getting the best out of what he has got. None of the others mentioned will be any better than Alan Pardew.

The next manager is short of personal wealth - so will be a stooge.
He will not ask for money, and will gloriously take the team to Division 2

I do not want to believe what I have read on Sky Sports: "Southampton have approached former Portsmouth boss Paul Hart over the vacant managerial position at St Mary's, Sky Sports sources understand."

His face doesn't fit, neither does the baggage that would come with him. There are plenty of other 'tough guys' who could come in (excluding Dowie). Please, NC. Read Harts CV thoroughly. I hope sincerely that this is just a ruse.

Seriously. Martin O'Neill?

What are you guys smoking?

Why oh why oh why would Martin O'Neill take the Saints job.

We'd be unlikely to get him if we were still in the Premiership.

Is that the same Martin O'Neill that left a team that was going for a four four finish this year but who couldn't live with interference and politics from the boardroom?

So he is impatient for success at Villa and instead decides he will relocate himself to the South for a job in League One with a club that sacks managers win 50% win ratios, a trophy in their first season and a 4-0 away win.

The same guy who still remembers the way Leicester fans treated him and called for his head after a couple of games?

Get real. I truly hope I'm wrong, but Alan Pardew was as good as we could ever have hoped for in this division.

Whoever does come in has to look forward to working with a squad he didn't assemble for four months, with high expectations, not much money left, and a difficult boss.

Add to that the fact that quite a few players will be angling for a move come January if we aren't top of the league and you have a very worrying situation.

Some good points, Jason. And, I agree (with one or two reservations) that AP was as good as we could have hoped for. Trouble is, we'll never know now.

As for the new incumbent working with a squad he did not assemble, I don't see this as a problem. I believe Saints are a force to be reckoned with. It's just that AP didn't seem to know how to get the best out of them every game. The new guy - if he's worth his salt - should be able to fast-track us towards promotion with the existing squad, plus a couple of loanees until the next window opens.

The new manager, whoever it is,is on a hiding to nothing.NC wants nothing short of automatic promotion.
That must mean that the new manager will only get a contract until the end of the season and will leave if we don't go up.
Whoever they appoint must be so desperate for a job.

le god7... i disagree.. infact i think its the complete opposite.. do u not agree that our squad is pretty much the best in the league, most have had time to gel and are just starting to hit form..
I totally believe that my mother could get promotion out of them this year.. if i was a manager who had not really achieved much so far in my career id be thinking this is a cant lose situation. u will start with the one of the top favs to go up squads, most money of any team in the league to spend in jan. and if it all goes wrong, u just say.. well i didnt get the preseason and by jan it was too late to bring in the players i wanted....

code word (hate-when)... hart signed and llanana was sold to fulham in the same day (come on u all know how this week is going, im suprised considering the day it is that he hasnt been mentioned on ssnhd yet!)

I can't see NC settling for some of the nearly men and has-beens of the English game being mentioned.
More likely he'll go for the continental playing coach / director of football combo.
This doesn't work too well with English managers, who are used to doing everything their own way, so I'm expecting a youngish coach doing well in France / Italy / Holland.

Would agree Jason, particularly AP being the best we could hope for and I thought he did well. You never know though, O'Neil thinks he's taken Villa as far as he can, he won't get a job at a club higher up so maybe he might look at a completely fresh challenge! I don't think NC would scare him much! Like I say, you never know! I do smoke though!!!

What I find particularly worrying about this situation is if NC is the business man everyone says he is then he must have thought through his sacking of AP. If so then surely he must have seen the consequences of his decision and taken steps to ensure the situation re the appoinment of a new manager was acheived quickly with minimum of delay and to maintain continuity. Any delay in the new appointment suggests to me the decision to sack AP was an emotional one. If that is the case it begs the question what other emotional decisions will he make in the future to the detriment of the Saints.

WoolNob says...

NC is just an arrogant, egotistical dictator who is clueless about football. NC relies on advice from a London public relations oufit run by a dimwit called David Bick. All the staff at SMS hate him. The next manager will be a YES man who doesn't answer back. Pardue wasn't a yes man and paid the price with his job. NC is a hard-nosed banker whose only interest is to sell the club at a profit at the end of his 5 year plan as soon as Saints reach the promised land. Got help anyone who gets in his way.
