No excuses as Saints tumble out

SAINTS caretaker boss Dean Wilkins refused to blame last night’s 3-0 loss to Swindon on the sacking of Alan Pardew.

The defending champions tumbled out of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy at the first hurdle after a poor display at St Mary’s, in front of a record low crowd of 8,333.

The match came less than 48 hours after Pardew, first team coach Wally Downes and goalkeeping coach Stuart Murdoch were given the axe.

Saints’ performance was a world away from the one they put in at the Memorial Stadium on Saturday, when they thumped Bristol Rovers 4-0.

But Wilkins refused to blame last night’s display on Monday’s events.

For a video of the top stories in today's Daily Echo, click the front page.

“We’re all disappointed,” he said.

“We’re all professional as well, so I don’t think we should use Monday’s events as an excuse.

“I’ve had to get on with it, the players have had to get on with it and we had a meeting about it.

“We are all professional people, so I’m not going to use it as an excuse.”

On numerous occasions, Saints fans were chanting the name of Pardew and the cries only got louder as the night went on.

But Wilkins said he didn’t believe that affected the players.

“I personally don’t think it does, because once you’re out there your full focus is on the job in hand,” he said.

“I understand it, but all I will say to the fans is we need everyone behind us if we are still to achieve our target of getting promotion.

“We’ve got another home game Saturday (against Rochdale) and we really need them behind us.”

Wilkins admitted his side lost the game in both penalty areas, where Swindon were far sharper.

But he felt Saints were the better of the two teams in the middle of the park.

“We lost the game in both penalty areas, but I thought our play in the middle third was probably better than theirs,” said Wilkins.

“I’m just disappointed generally with the result, especially as we were defending our trophy.

“We felt we had the chance of going all the way again.

“I don’t think we got the ball into the box quickly enough at times.”

Wilkins revealed that Lee Barnard’s sending off was for a straight red after a foul on Will Evans, ten minutes after coming on late in the second half.

Referee Darren Sheldrake had initially shown a yellow card, but Wilkins said both that and the red had been stuck together.

Sheldrake then corrected his mistake, but Wilkins didn’t agree with the sending off.

“I thought it was harsh, I thought he tackled one-footed and he hit the ball with his studs, without a doubt,” he said.

Wilkins also confirmed that the prognosis for Adam Lallana and his troublesome knee was not good, ahead of the midfielder visiting a specialist today.

“He sees a specialist, but unfortunately I don’t think we are anticipating good news,” he said.

“But we will just have to wait and see on that.”

Sorry Deano you are wrong, the sacking was very influential on what happened in the game, it is only natural, some of the players were given their chances by AP and are bound to be upset by his sudden removal, Yes you could say professional players should be above all that, but they are also human beings with feelings like everyone else, they could have similarly have been affected by ML's death, that is why it would have been unfair to play the MK Dons game. NC has a plan, we have to be patient, sadly his communication skill with the fanbase is his worse enemy, we are ready to listen, but I cannot hear anything yet.

As much as I rate Kelvin as a shot stopper I have a sneaky feeling his days are numbered as our No1 keeper. The new "High Profile" manager will demand his keeper comes and claims the ball instead of relying on his defenders to clear it. His distribution is awful, time and time again we see chances for Kelvin to roll the ball out wide but he chooses to hoof it and hopes Ricky wins it. Does anyone know who Sven is sha**ing at the mo coz I saw a Porche with the plate SV03 EUN yesterday floating around SMS being driven by a smart mature woman.

Those calling for AP back or in support are idiots - it's as bad as booing and will just make the players play worse! They're probably the same people having a go at those booing. We should get behind the team no matter what happens and APs not coming back so we move on we'll get someone else in whose better for the club (NOT Hart as thats just a false rumour denied by the club) and will take us forward.

Just when Saints fans could walk around with their head held a little higher than the past few years, this clown Cortese seems hell bent on stripping the club of any credibility, he'd better have a long term plan to bring in the right, high profile manager, because all he's doing at the moment is duplicating the same mistakes made by Lowe and his cronies.

Whatever we think of NC and, yes, his lack of truthful communication with the fans has been disappointing, we need to bury the hatchet and get behind him and the team now and also the new bod he appoints as manager. Let's hold NC to his word and trust that he achieves promotion this season through his actions. If he should fail, then he ought to do the honourable thing and resign, but a club of our size should gain promotion this season. If NC ends up happier with his new appointment and we are in the Championship next season, then it can't be a bad thing. I like AP and am thankful to him for last season and the hope he gave us, but we now all need to move on. C.O.Y.R.

Paul Hart has apparently been offered the job according to Sky Sports News. However the bloke in charge of SSN is Rupert Murdoch who also owns the company that owns The Sun and we know how much The Sun likes Southampton at the moment. Part of the problem in professional football today is that very little of the player's wages is based on results. When I knew some of the players back in the nineties the win was important financially to men with young families and it showed in their atttude. If players sign contracts guaranteeing income regardless of whether they show up on the night or not this is what can happen. WHy do some people fall over themselves to blame anyone - Wilkins, Cortese, Pardew etc but exonerate the 11 or 14 who actually played so badly?

Dean I am sure that you are doing your best under very difficult circumstances, but any one of us that was there last night must have been watching a different game than you, there were a number of players out there that looked totally disinterested (and I include Ricky as one of them) how DoPrado was kept on the pitch so long baffled me as all he seemed to do when passed the ball was pass it straight back to who gave it to him or to an opponent.
I hope and pray that NC has got something up his sleeve but he does need to stop treating his paying customers as mushrooms! there is only so much BS we can take.

Good point. Imagine the money clubs would save if everyone was paid a small basic wage and then got high appearance and goal/clean sheet bonuses, so everyone will give 100% to get in the team and then do well whilst on the pitch and you're only really paying for 11-14 top player wages each game/week.

We have all heard many different rumours, no doubt in the fullness of time, or in an exclusive News of the World scandal item, it will come to light, it is ok to speculate, but rather pointless. Our next game is home to Rochdale so how about a discussion on how we are going to pull things around to win this one, and who do think should play if fit? We know Barney is out after the dodgy red card, but Aaron Martin should replace Jedi, and Oxo should start, with Guly as the impact sub. but in a more central position. What do you think?

Didn't go to the match last night so couldn't comment about the performance, despite obvious disappointment of the result. Deano is evidently trying to take the pressure of his players. Fact is they have lost their manager, in quite a bizarre fashion and nothing is yet clear about who's going to take over. They're professional I know but hey, you can't blame them for being disappointed and demotivated.

I still have faith in NC. Herr Liebherr wouldn't have had so much time for him if he didn't have something up top and whilst he is new to this game, I don't think he is niave enough to sack a manager of AP calibre unless he had something up his sleeve. We must trust in his decision and respect it. Furthermore, he will have advisors supplying him with details of individuals etc. Whoever takes over we must get behind him 100%. Remember the old adage - "The King is dead - long live the King"? .

This business about it being Hart is plain rubbish - we know NC doesn't do his business in public - thus it's a smoke screen. I still anticipate a big-ish name, although I don't think it'll be MO'N or SGE!! I think Paul Jewell might be a good shout by the way. Proven at taking teams up to the Prem (BCFC and WAFC), although in fairness he seems to struggle once there perhaps.

Of course he's rubbish - did nothing for Hull! You try being a manager of a grim North East club trying to stay in the premiership competing for signings with the likes of more affluent clubs that are able to offer players and their family better living environments. Indeed a tricky one but i think Wilky will go with what he knows works. I also think Rochdale will be another all behind the ball outfit. But young alex up front might cause them probs cus hes nippy and agile so he might run through a few defendes legs lol. Not really seen much of guly he looks impresive but i have yet to see him in the flesh as it were, but like you say could be the impact sub. Whilst the jedi is not to zippy and his ball control is lacking not much gets past him in the air and therfore i would go with him to start but sub him if he starts to look a tired. Other than that as is. The best designs are always the simplest so im bettin on no fancy changes or new tactics.

OMG, I was there last night. Lambert was not interested, his body language was awful. Guly was awful, no wonder Pards walked if that was NC's signing. Jedi was slow and there was no control in the midfield. They just looked shocking. I just hope NC knows what he is doing as some of the team last night did not want to play. Get the manager in and use Pardew's loan signing plans to get the right and left wings sorted.

Why is everyone obsessed with our new manager being 'high profile'? Wouldn't it be more satisfying to be in a situation in five years' time when a young English manager has taken us from League 1 to Premier League and we have the new Brian Clough in charge? I like the idea of Paul Tisdale, myself - he always looks so dapper on the sideline, and that's the important thing.

It feels like we've given ourself a ten point deduction this season! How are we supposed to be winning with no manager? Lots of supporters have bought season tickets based on the fact that we had a premiership quality manager with a proven track record that would have seen us get promoted. The chance of that now has to be very slim, who knows what inexperienced manager we may end up with to satisfy our chairman. Is it just me or does this sound familiar? (Rupert Lowe)

Just back from the game - it was a poor performance tonight ! Nobody wanted Alan Pardew to go - but now he has gone the Club need to install an even better Manager than him.

Technically, Dean Wilkins can only be a stand in Manager until the new Gaffer gets the job. There was a change around of players tonight ... and some of the first half looked promising with Gully having a few nice touches ... and although Connolly can pass and do link up play - he never looked liked scoring.. and the team missed Adam Lallana tonight.

Team Selection including the loss of Adam Lallana due to injury was not the strongest. Although Barnard and Rickie Lambert have not always clicked - judging on form this season I would have played Barnard or brought him on after half an hour or half time the latest to give fresh impetus to the team and nick a goal.

So 1-0 down and half time off Connolly and on Barnard - but it did not happen. When Barney did come on too late to influence the game he let his frustrations overspill and saw Red. Also having given Gully a run in the side would have taken him off ready for the League Game on Saturday.

Poor in the second half - and with Barnard now to miss some games and Lallana doubtful the Team are going to struggle to get goals - they needed to have signed a Striker with the money in the transfer window and offloaded Connolly at the end of last season.

Saints conceded tonight - similar to the corner scenario - ball whipped in by Swindon who had little of the ball at this point but were well organised and straight in the back of the net. That is one of their weaknesses. Balls in from the corner or the wings.

Players seemed to be in a strange mood tonight apart from Gully - they are professional and need to dig deep to now get results in the League.

Saints need to get the next appointment right - it is crucial to their success. He better be top quality based on what I have seen tonight.

I think you'll find that well over 50,000 Saints fans went to Wembley and many of those were clearly casual fans and families. Therefore, if you look at other gates in the JPT last night, you'll find that 8,300+ was a good crowd (particularly in the circumstances).

Saints vs Rochdale

The problem will be getting goals on Saturday - so Saints will have to play their strongest Team and be defensive and tight at the back - but being at home will still need to get forward and make chances.

Prediction : 0-0 Half Time 1-0 Saints Win Full Time.

To get the win the players are going to have to work extremely hard. They were tiring last night especially Dan Harding and that's why the third goal went in.

Team Selection:

Davis

Harding
Martin
Fonte
Butterfield

Note:

(1) Jaidi on the Bench
(2) Ryan Dickson on the Bench
(3) Dan Harding to improve his fitness for 90 minutes of intense football.

Gully
Schneiderlin
Hammond
Puncheon

Note :

(1) Lallana to play if fit.
(2) Gully not to play 90 minutes
(3) Puncheon off - if not delivering good football. (can be variable)

Lambert
Connolly

Note:

(1) No choice - Barnard misses game.
(2) Connolly can provide a good pass and as an option get a goal if lucky.

Alex Oxlade-C on the bench -on as a sub.

No suprises on Saturday - Rochdale are going to have corners and whip the ball in from the wings so 100 per cent concentration and keep a clean sheet.

Good Luck Rickie - Good Luck Saints

See you there !!

He must stop interfering in things he knows nothing about and NC get the chairs back hospitality is nothing if you can't sit down

There is more to Barnard's sending Off.

It could cost the club goals and points which could be crucial at the end of the Season as Saints go for Automatic Promotion.

It has definitely reduced the options for Saturday with team selection especially with Adam Lallana injured. Lee has worked hard this season over the last couple of games.

Barnard declared recently he wanted to be Top scorer - this will not help him with Saints only involved in the League and some future FA Cup Games and being out for a couple of games due to his Red.

Dean Wilkins thought that the Red Card was harsh - it that is the case then the Club should appeal against it.

The truth is that Lee was very worked up at the beginning of the game on Tuesday - his shooting practice sent many a ball over the bar. He did not look happy at half time - I expected him to be getting ready to come on. I can understand that he was feeling hard done by not playing - he has grafted and delivered a goal at Bristol Rovers and the blending play with Rickie has improved from last season.

Lee Barnard does score goals and works hard on and off the ball (delivering so much more than Connolly) so he is important to Saints.

Whereas players that go over the top can receive a fine from the Club - A Top Manager would have recognised the signs and had a 'word' to calm him down and channel his energy into goal-scoring as a Striker. Managers must get to know their players and nuture their talents. (Basics really)

Lee can do a job for Saints whether he starts every game or comes on as a Sub - I hope he achieves the target he has set himself. It can only be good news for SFC.

Look forward to seeing him back in action soon. Nobody wants to change his talent or style of play - he needs looking after and not sure he got that support on Tuesday.
