Phil Brown interested in becoming the next Southampton manager

FORMER Hull City boss Phil Brown is the first out-of-work manager to publicly throw his hat into the ring for the vacant Saints job.

Chairman Nicola Cortese has started the hunt this week for someone to replace Alan Pardew, after he was sacked on Monday.

And Brown is hoping he will receive a call from Saints chief Cortese, as he looks to make a return to management.

Speaking to the Daily Echo, the 51-year-old said: “I was very surprised on Monday morning to hear Alan Pardew had been sacked, but Southampton would be a fantastic opportunity for someone who has the ambition to get back to the Premiership, so of course I would be interested.

For a video of the top stories in today's Daily Echo, click the front page.

“I’d like to think I’ll get an opportunity to speak to Southampton and hearing what they have to say.

“Southampton were unfortunate to find themselves in League One, for whatever reason, but it is a club steeped in tremendous history and tradition.”

Good record at getting teams promoted, interesting clash of egos possibly, interesting to see him and Nicola having achat in the centre circle at half time if things go badly. Cant think of many worse managers, dowie, coppell, hart et al. Missed last nights game but back on saturday want to see some good attacking play and hammer a few goals. COYS

pretty average manager, and a bit mental as per middle of pitch rant. would be a step back from pardew. but then like mentioned, probably the realistic level we can hope for?

curbishley is another thats been out of work for a while but he stated before that he wants premiership team.

I don't think he'd work with Cortese, both are too headstrong and self righteous that partnership would last about five minutes.

I think we'll get a relatively unknown foreign manager, probably Italian, given Cortese's well documented links to Italy.

We just need to do it NOW!

Thanks for the interest Phil, but as far as I'm concerned Pardew stands head and shoulders above, namely for his work at West Ham.

Not a direct step up, more of a diagonal shift. Not good enough to manage the expectations of fans and NC, in my opinion.

I like the idea. He'd get the team fired up, and I think that the passion he'd have for winning, and the passion NC has for promotion, but actually gel! His record at Hull is good, and I know a few Hull fans that are desperate to get him back....

Anyways, I am begining to speculate that it wasn't NC who fired Pardew anyways...I think Markus' family wanted him gone as a condition of their continued support...

Did brilliantly with Fulham at this level and Newcastle in Championship, from rock bottom. He'd get us playing and would no doubt continue to polish the diamond that is Rickie Lambert.

does that make him a hash-brown???

anyway as far as brown goes for managing Saints thanks for the interst but no-thanks.

surely we have got to be looking for a manger that is at least equal to AP if not better.

apart from O`neil i cant think of anyone but o`neil is not a realistic target.

so that begs the question of why get rid if no one else is ready to come in.

my opinion for what it is worth is that AP did a good steady job with very little to start off with and his only real questionable quality was lack of substituitions at vital parts of the game. always leaving it too late and not taking a gamble earlier on in a match.

no manager not even sir alex is going to please all of the players all of the time.

someone posted last week that he had it on good authority 1 player was deliberitly playing bad just to get AP the sack.

well last night it looked like 10men deliberately played poorly.......WHY???

Time for a reality check for some people. We are in the third tier of English football, a manager of Browns standing is as about as good as it gets at this level. No good saying AP is better than him as he is yesterdays man, gone, sacked, persona non gratis so get over it. PB's track record at motivating teams in lower leagues is good and if there is a team in L1 that needs motivating it is us.

Forget all the conjecture. Dean Wilkins when interviewed on meridian news last night said that NC came to see the players and told them what was already planned for the next week.

Says to me that there is already a plan of action.

The sacking of Pardew may be considered to be bad timing but I for one would rather it was the day before a pint pot trophy match than a league match.

Let's hope there is a plan and it all works out for the best, if NC is willing to risk our wrath to take any steps for promotion then I'm on board.

Bit of a contradiction st waggy. Whilst I agree we need to be realistic in div 1 and Brown is probably as good as it gets, don't see how you can say no point in comparing to AP and then go on to state you trust NC. NC stated he was replacing AP because he wanted to go up this year and wanted a better manager - so if you trust him you have to take that at face value and therefore we expect a better manager than AP. Either that, or we accept NC is a liar. Can't have it both ways.

KK is a proven quitter, but his previous association with the Saints might just see him through, if things start to go against him. He could be an inspired choice.
.
In any event, NC had better have an ace up his sleeve, or be prepared to open the cheque book wide: we are a 3rd div club (admittedly with a great potential) and will have to make a very persuasive case to get a class manager here.

As far as managers go, and lets face it we have had a few over the years, i would welcome Brown, Keegan or possibly Coleman(it's not his fault he's Welsh). What about an old experienced manager with a young track suited newbie. What is evident is that we do need a Director of football to shield the manager from NC interference.

EAGLESAINT says...

all the bigger names would be good, but we would still need a manager in or around this league so that when the winter sets in and we start playing on ploughed fields and bogs, we'll need knowledge on how to play to these conditions, something that cost us a playoff place last season, i'm still sore that AP was shafted, but if the dressing room was divided then fair enough, but we deserve to know the reasons, then NC would have more support in what he says he's trying to achieve, i'll still be there saturday and hope we get off to a flyer because if we dont i can see the crowd turning on NC and thats not going to do anyone anygood, tell us whats going on because no doubt AP has got a gagging clause,

So many years has Keegan's name been banded around and for me it's time to give him his chance to do the job that he was always supposed to do..what on earth was he thinking about with Newcastle, Man City and England when Southampton is obviously his life calling :0) Joking aside, I do think he would motivate the players well and our current position I think really could suit him, he could work to his strengths without too much media and competitive stress to distract him as he beds into the role and gets his foundations in place. Clearly he's not everyone's first choice but he is a 'Saint', a great motivator, knows his stuff and I feel he would stick it out for the long term...He wouldn't have been right in the past but a more mature Keegan could be good for the Saints right now.

Whoever it's going to be I truly hope that the Saints fans get someone who will give longer term stability not only in this division but someone who is able to confidently take us up and be able to confidently deal with the complexities of higher league management, otherwise we're in for short term gain followed by more instability. NC I pray that you 'get' how big a deal this is for the fans...get it right please! P.S. NOT HART!

This sacking was a long time coming and I think the criticism of NC is not based on the full facts. He was shrewd to advise the purchase of this club by the late Markus Leibherr, he was shrewd in making money available for player purchases. I also think he was shrewd in kicking out the hangers on in the Boardroom hospitality area, legends or not. All in all I think it wiser to watch NCs next moves, support the club and judge him on the remainder of the season rather than act rashly now. It seems pretty clear to me that the decision to sack AP was not a football decision but either a political or personality clash type reason.
To this end the new 1st team coach (watch the title change from Manager at the press conference!) will have to meet three requirements.
A personality and style acceptable to the Chairman.
Credibility in football acheivements to win over the players.
A willingness to commit to the long term with Southampton FC to provide the stability all fans crave for.

The one name that I believe can satisfy all three is Alan Shearer. No question he is a loyal man. No question over his football credentials. Diplomatic and young enough to happily leave the moneyside to the Chairman perhaps??? Inexperienced enough to welcome the back room structure. already in place. Attracted to an apprenticeship with huge potential in both short and long term.

We are now out of 2 cups and have only got the division left.

HI SAINT BEAN Sorry mate but your line , on the way back up to where we belong. We are were we belong today and we have no divine right to think otherwise. Were in div 3 simply because the standard of player in the past was simply not good enough to play at the higher grade of football. Dont get me wrong i would walk over red hot coals to see our club playing the highest grade of football but we are in division 3 and we really cant expect top class managers to want to come to our club. It is also my opinion that N.C. is much like RUPERT LOWE only difference is N. C. is putting money into the club instead of taking it out.So i would like us to hire someone in the BILLY DAVIS mould, cant stand the little so and so but is a master at this level.

I seriously cannot believe some of the morons on here that have NO clue about football!!!!!!!!!!

Phil Brown is as good if not better than Alan fcuking Pardew!!

People said they don't want a yes man...well this guy is not! BUT this is the FIRST premier league experienced manager to put his name forward and it's only Wednesday afternoon!

I'm embarrassed by the behaviour of our fans this week. The lemmings last night chanting 'shove Paul Hart up your ar5e!' took the biscuit !! I knew hours before kick-off it was a wind up by Murdoch! How these muppets didn't, I can only presume they were gettin tanked up in the pub!! After all the hard work and saving our beloved Saints THIS is how you repay him! AP played rubbish football and his tactics and substitutions are awful, PLEASE GET OVER IT!!!!!!!!!

All of you think you know who the best man for the job is. But none of you have a clue what you're talking about!! Martin O'neil is not gonna come here (yet), people who have something to prove and have experience in Prem and possibly exp. with a continental set-up will do well!

We need someone that's PASSIONATE !!! AP WAS NOT !!!

I'm only 26 years old but have seen a fair few managers come and go in that time. And the only time I can remember watching Saints play like 'Brazil' was with Hoddle! He has unfinished business, he works well under the radar like Cortese and has International experience! If I had to go with someone different I would prefer someone like Zola, Ince or Shearer get a chance. All are VERY passionate about football and have played at the highest level.

Time to forgive and forget. Or support the skate bastards down the road!!!!

If this is true, that would explain why NC has not made any comments because a player's wife is involved and that could be very hurtful to this "Player A".
I am not surprised by this as it was very clear that something had happened at the Training Ground which brought about a major breach which NC was forced to settle.
Wonder if the Nationals will pick up on this and go digging?

I have always believed that NC did not take this decision out of spite. Regardless of what any of us think of him, that would not be the actions of a sensible business man.
I thought the clue was in the official club statement on Monday and it all smacked of something that had occurred at Staplewood and suggested AP and his "drinking buddies" were the main prevaricators.
I can also imagine NC saying what it's claimed by this blogger as they were a tight unit.

Very interesting, although it could almost have been written by Nicola himself judging by the positive light it puts him in. But either way, it's a version of events which suggests Nicola could have been 100% right in his actions, so let's all lay off him.

It would also mean that Nicola didn't have someone waiting in the wings before making the decision, so we may just have to wait a while before hearing who the new boss is.

Absolutely, Well at least we seem to have calmed down a bit, I somehow am not too worried about who it is now, as long as they want the job for what it is, think that they can carry it through, and can build a decent rapport which will motivate the team to play to their proper potential, and has more than Plan A in their armoury, once more we could be in for exciting times, providing the choice is the right one, keep the faith.

There must be a good explanation for the massive difference between Saturday's performance and last night. Admittedly the Gas have had their problems, and Swindon were our bug-bear team last season, but is that enough to account for a 7 goal difference? I wonder whether we will ever know the truth. NC had better have a very good reason or a very good "masterplan" (or both).

Just a small point I’ve been considering from the club’s statement. “We have commenced our careful evaluation of candidates and longer term requirements”. For me, the important word is “commenced”. Nothing is about to commence in searching for a new manager, all the work is done and, in my generally overoptimistic mind when it comes to the Saints, this means the board already has a replacement lined up which is superior to AP. Phil Brown has no chance, as the board already know who it’s going to be…

I think I'd agree with the ruling. It shouldn't just be the newspapers who face libel action if someone is making up malicious rumours and posting them online. Obviously, it'll still be the newspapers that get sued because they have more money, but posters should be held accountable for what they say.

At last a bit of progress on the OS the Injuries and Bans section has some information, a bit minimal but better than nothing. It tables current injuries but not the progress on them, and states that Barny is awaiting suspension but not how long. Lala was supposed to be going for a scan today and we should be aware how long he will be out of action.

Absolutely - we should take it with a massive pinch of salt and it's a pretty basic PR trick to post things on forums in order to sway opinion. But it does mean that there's a possible version of events in which Nicola has acted completely in the right and that vilification of him is unfair. Until we find out what happened (and we may never) then it's wrong to think ill of him over the Pards sacking.

From the Echo 28 march 2010

Alan Pardew says Saints’ Johnstone’s Paint Trophy win allows him to look Nicola Coreste in the eye and insist that his two-year challenge to get the team promoted to the Championship is very much on.

There has been a lot of speculation over Pardew’s relationship with Cortese after the executive chairman released a statement to say the priority this season is to reach play-offs, even given a minus ten start, with the cups merely a nice bonus.

When asked whether he felt the 4-1 win over Carlisle at Wembley would buy him more time in the job Pardew said: “I don’t think it’s about buying time, I really haven’t thought about that.

“There’s been a lot of speculation about what the acting chief executive has said and some of the pressure he’s put on us and I have to accept that.

“It was important we won this so I can look him in the eye and say ‘we’ve won this."

Totally agree, would be a very good manager,English & would def have the respect from the players..However I do think that NC has his own man & i think that man could be Zola. Would also say that whoever comes in must bring in some loan players,we do not have enough depth in our squad.I think that as Phil Brown has 'Thrown his name in the hat ' & gone public he will not be coming.NC will does not do public so count Mr Brown out.

As for the new man Cortese needs to take his time so that he gets this appointment right.
we can only dream of O'neill
Hoddle would be a good choice
Keegan ? ok i guess
Shearer no lower league experience but with keegan together it might work
Howe at Bournemouth has the know how
Ince too miserable for my liking

Zola ? fantasy football but no defence

However, much of the outcry could have been avoided if NC had provided an explanation for the dismissal. There would be no need to go into extreme detail but at least something so that the fans can form their opinions armed with more than a general Club statement. CMT - if you think about it and this story is true, do you really think NC is going to broadcast it when it could cause further harm and humiliation to one of his Senior players? The Statement they put out hinted that there had been unrest in the Training Camp and due to this, AP and his close allies were no longer employed by SFC.
Clearly Nicola has no intention of speaking the truth for the protection of his players and the Club; "You don't air dirty linen in public"! We would all like to know the truth but (if this story has any legs at all) we should trust the Chairman and give him the benefit of the doubt. He now has a very awkward task of getting in a new Manager whilst taking a great deal of stick from the fans, and for deciding that something that happened inside the Camp should stay there for the sake of all involved.

Agreed but as I said in my post, something could have been released.... perhaps along the lines of "...gross breach of Club rules/misconduct etc". That way the supporters (who will still obviously speculate what the breach was) will know the actual decision for the dismissal. That way, there is no public airing of the dirty laundry and if AP does not make a statement to counter any specific allegations, we at least know his sacking was justified.

Fair point CMT but we don't know the conditions of the Contract or any severance agreement they might have made which might have stated "We go public if you pursue severance pay"? I suspect that something like this will leak out eventually and perhaps it coming out today in the way it did might well have been part of the plan to get the fans the truth without publicly admitting to it?

The problem with Shearer is that he has not real track record, just a great player, does not make a great manager and is not worth the gamble(Newcastle gambled on him, but he failed to inspire). Hoddle done a great job for us, we were struggling and he only bought a couple of players and we really kicked off. Keegan(we are not worthy) would not only inspire, has sound knowledge of how to get promoted, and would put bums on seats to boot. I also believe (if he took the job) he would really love it! if he could lose the quitter tag.

Just cannot believe a lot of you guys have fallen for this rubbish about Pardew. Somebody is clearly trying to taint Pardew's image so everyone starts kissing Cortese's a**e again. I thank Cortese for saving the club along with Saint Markus but I really do fear for Saints under Nicola's leadership. We are making lots of enemies which will only hinder our progress in the long term. Pardew was best boss we've had in a while and we were really kicking on after saturday. The players I believe are a bit shell-shocked so we need to appoint the new man fairly soon and rescue our promotion bid. We must not panic but I'm so frustrated that we are in this situation again. Seeing as the new boss will not be able to make any signings (although possibly loans) I think we need a real motivator to gee the players up and really kick on again. We could have a large points deficit (again) to overcome if we leave it too long. Top teams are looking strong already. Badly need to be up for it and support the team for 3 points on sat or the rot will really set in. Come on Saints, get it right this whole saga can be put to rest if we're challenging near the top in 10 games time. Up the Saints...

Don't have a stron opinion on phil brown, except he has experience. Not Shearer because he'd leave at the drop of a hat for Newcastle. Not Keegan...too hysterical, though entertaining. I don't think NC even considers past history with Saints an advantage. I'm not criticizing him;he comes to the Saints table with a clean sheet. I favour Hoddle;he has the right temperament and could do a job for us. I have always said that if we had taken him back when Lowe wanted to we wouldn't have got relegated (at least at that point). We were salvageable but the fans wouldn't have it. However, he's probably been out too long. I love Stewart Pearce but can you see him and Cortese; I think Stewart has had enough of working with foreigners. I wonder if NC is looking to intoduce a director of football and coach at the same time or at least to inform the new coach a director of football is on the way.

the days of a football manager controling the day to day running of a club are long gone, today a manager is basicly a motivator,a tactition and the man who speaks to the press after games(they don't really coach either).......this is what we are looking for, passion for the club is not nearly enough (although it would help).....who that person is i don't know....but i'm sure it's not keegan or shearer.

On what basis do we know that there is any truth to it?! We do not know anything so we should probably not even comment on stories like this. It just seems very fabricated to me and funny that it's after last nights game when the fans were singing Pardews name. I'm just so frustrated that Pardew and our 'Stability' is gone. Suppose I need to get over it and move on but it's just even more annoying with the names being bandied about, the good ones we will never get- O'neill etc. I hope Nicola pulls something out of the hat to get the feel-good factor back......

Up the Saints...
on what basis do you say it's rubbish ?
On what basis do we know that there is any truth to it?! We do not know anything so we should probably not even comment on stories like this. It just seems very fabricated to me and funny that it's after last nights game when the fans were singing Pardews name. I'm just so frustrated that Pardew and our 'Stability' is gone. Suppose I need to get over it and move on but it's just even more annoying with the names being bandied about, the good ones we will never get- O'neill etc. I hope Nicola pulls something out of the hat to get the feel-good factor back......
i know where your'e coming from and i agree.......but my gut feeling since monday is that somthing serious happend, you don't call a meeting on a bankholiday morning and sack a guy in 10 mins because of a mediocre start to a season.........somth
ing happend and is was that serious !

Good to see we have all settled down and stopped using words like 'devestated' and 'disgusted'. AP got the sack for something coz he upset his boss - thats between them so we move on.
Interesting to hear Eddie Howe last night say he couldnt comment coz Saints might not even want to talk to him. Thats a 'come and get me' plea if ever I heard one.
My bettings on Howe as Coach with foreign Director of Football.

Eddie Howe is interested in the job but as far as i know he doesnt want to leave Bournemouth according to one of my friends. 33% record at hull means nothing half the time they were struggling in the Championship and he managed to get hull into the premier league with a transfer embargo like eddie so i wont be surprised if he is put in charge

You get my vote Slugger!!...Can see the headline now(no picture obviously what with the press ban).
"Local Saints Fan Appointed 1st Team Coach at St Mary's"....Slugger states that after having spent many years keeping the faith he reached a point where he just "SNAPPED"..."I just cant live with the overun in the urinals at the back of The Kingsland stand",he was quoted as saying."Put me in charge and the "Overun situation will be at the top of my hit-list". This obviously impressed the board and the rest is History!!We went on to become Champions of not only Europe but the whole Universe!!!
Question that all the fans reportedly asked was"So what are your plans for next year???..Slugger just smiled and replied...Mind yer own **** business!!..If I choose to holiday in Skegness, how is that your business!!!

Two people (ex media) emailed me to say Eaglespark was most likely a multiple ID used by Echo Staff to up the threads. Saying it was common practise at some papers. Heck if not the Echo then it's sport for rival clubs fans to do it. I'd say they are having a field day at the mo by the number of new posters here.

That thought has kept me sane this week as I'm deeply hurt and thoroughly ashamed of a lot of hot heads that just fire off pot shots, some racist, some just totally unfounded.

To liken the current era to the Lowe days just because Alan Pardew got sacked is a bigger shock to me than the sacking. This gentleman chairman of ours had a vision of taking Saints to the top which he sold to one of the most decent men in business. He'll get the job done for Markus and will at least enjoy the support of Kararina Liebherr if not the ranting short sighted people in Southampton that do not know all the facts but prefer to sling off anyway.

I agree with the many fans who protest changes in the ticket structure which hurt a lot and with changes in the press relationship but do so rationally and see whether their are benefits in the long term for the club.

If Nicola Cortese can get a club running and standing on it's own feet then he will be one of the very few in Britain. I admire him for not being bullied by the ignoramus press and league as he forges a new blueprint for the way a club should be run.

I do not doubt Saints are going up, not for a single second. If some have to be dragged up to the Prem kicking and protesting so be it.

I hope some support comes back and the Echo exercise a little moderation. Do people know that your Echo username and password gets them on to other papers in the chain... check out some of the papers in the way they snipe at Saints.. it's all from the owners.. I hate it, it's childish : subuteo and cartoons.. They charge for photos, Pop Stars have done it for ages (no cameras or photographers and licensed sales only) so why not Football Clubs when they are struggling for funds? I am considering a name change for The Echo Saints Forum facebook group to South Coast Club Forum in support of The Chairman where slagging at Saints is banned and debate is encouraged I'll see what members think.

exactley, i am sure there is more to this than meets the eye and that Pardew did do something. NC is miticulous in his planning and execution, had AP's sacking been planned tehre would eb someone else as manager by now, i think that NC acted on instinct and in the short time he had when this came to light
Innit. The poor bloke's mate dies and then he has to deal with an absolute shitstorm on the training ground in which he's totally in the right, and yet he gets nothing but abuse from the fans. He must be wondering why he bothers...
The clubs own fault. Only had to state gross misconduct in their release statement and the fans could accept this , to say nothing leaves themselfs open for all sorts of comments.Unfortunate but people do put two and two together and come up with six. Missed the 606 post, can anyone let us in on it without naming names?

Not at all, but having defended against a libel action was just clarifying a point of law. Libel and its verbal form slander are only that if they meet certain criteria, the main one being the comments are untrue.

At the skates game I put on arab headgear for a laugh and waved a wad of cash in Peter Storries face (I sit next to the away directors). Under the current regime the photos would have been surpressed.

Ha. I use one of the photos as my screen saver and Sir Trevor is having a good chuckle. The two stewards who came and persuaded me to sit down got verbal warnings for not acting quickly enough which I felt bad about but they still said it was funny.

I have refrained from commenting about the press position, the way that NC appears to run the club, and the recent dismissals because I simply do not know all the facts (and probably never will!). I don't know NC and probably never will. I understand the passion felt by the genuine fans and well appreciate that they may be unhappy at some of decisions made by NC. Also, I remember the vision that he outlined at this time last year. If my memory is correct, part of this was the intention of conducting the club's business in a different manner to that typically done by other English clubs. Well there has been plenty of evidence of this... I am not sure that it is all for the better..! But we were warned. The idea of moving the club forward on a (more or completely?) sustainable business model that is the complete opposite of the financial shambles evidenced elsewhere seems to be a worthwhile intention. Especially, as in the future, if the rule changes take a more financially conservative view, the foundations being laid over the past year may prove to be prescient, wise, and the model to be admired and followed by others. It is entirely possible that with having financial expertise at the helm such a goal is possible. It is also possible that the foundations are on sand.. only time will tell.... With such a fairly radical aim, it is entirely likely that some will feel that the change in the established order is unwelcome and unacceptable, especially if vested interests loose a pecunary benefit. This is the price of progress. As for the press, they are more than capable of looking after their interests. I think it is too early to judge NC's success or failure and it appears that his natural approach is secretive which leads to much suspicion whether fair or not.

Not gonna lie i feel stupid about my comments yesterday... was just angry about a poor performance and the sacking of who i thought was a good manager... with rational thought behind it, Pardew must have done something to provoke a sacking. I just dont understand why they dont publish and official version of events so that Pardew gets the backlash, and not Cortese, it makes no sense.

Anyway, I don't care who comes in. Whether Cortese is a true hero, or tyrannical knobhead like Rupert Lowe, I am Southampton til i die.

If NC wanted Guly played he would argue with AP. I don't believe he would sack him for that reason, especially as we won 4.0. The more likely scenario would be they'd have a steaming row and AP would have walked. That didn't happen. It was a 10 min sacking. This sounds like gossip perpetrated by newspapers. Everything else is gossip as well. I say lets have a look at the next manager and his relationship wth NC. Remember we don't want Saints sold again. My gut feeling is that it didn't seem to matter that we won 4-0 all he cared about was that his judgement was being questioned, we will probably never know the true reason as I suspect AP might have got an incentive to stay quite?

Brown is an excellent manager. He was simply corrupted by a bad chairman once in the Premier League.
He may be outspoken, odd with the press, but he was well loved by all the TigerNation. It was only his "close" relationship with a mad spending idiot (Duffen) that became his demise.
He led us to the PL. We beat Arsenal, Tottenham... we lived the dream.
Where you are now, and what you have to deal with.. Perfect for you.
We would have him back tomorrow, its only our chairman that hasnt the balls.

I think Phil Brown’s managerial CV is strong. Getting Hull promoted into the Premier League and then avoiding relegation was a fantastic achievement. I feel his work is not given the credit it’s due.

Ignoring our own situation, one of the least understandable sackings of recent times was Billy Davies from Derby. He did great things getting them into the Premiership, but with no additional funds God himself couldn’t have kept them there (unless using under-hand Divine power tactics).

Despite this I would prefer Zola, who has achieved nothing. It’s important to me that Saints play attractive football,

My preferred choices would be KK, or Eddie Howe.

Apparently, ML wanted AP out at the end of last season but NC defended him and they stuck with him for the beginning of this season, but with high targets. With a slow start, defeat to Plymouth and draw with Orient, this fling just seemed to top it all and NC decided he had to get rid of AP and his staff who the players didn't get on with, apparently calling for action from NC, so i presume the supposed fling would have been recent.

2nd choice - Kevin Keegan DOF and Shearer and Manager.

3rd Choice - Alan Curbsley.

4th choice - Phil Brown.

All the others can do one. Please dont go foreign - we need a BRITISH MANAGER who knows the leagues and has EXPERIENCE!

NC said last christmas that a DOF would be appointed by the summer. I thoughts are that this is due to happen, AP wasnt happy and is gone.

This next appointment is massive and will show us how much ambition the family and NC have to get us back to the prem.

Was very disappointed we didnt buy anyone, we are still short of a striker and winger. Maybe the money has dried up for now.

I was impressed with Brown when he appeared on MOTD2 this Sunday. He accepted that he needed to learn more and had taken a number of courses to help make him a better manager. Came across as quite humble, aware of his shortcomings and bursting to get into football management again. Quite a refreshing attitude from the usual arrogance you get from other managers....

He'd be a good choice in my view and certainly less risky than many others mentioned here.

Thought at first that NC would have had someone lined-up before sacking Pardew, but I'm not so sure now which makes Brown's public plea for the job more credible. At the very least I would expect NC to speak to him if only to make sure that he has considered all his options properly.

Why do people keep mentioning Shearer???? He managed Newcastle for about 6 games and i think they lost 5 of them!
Keegan is old hat...past it..a bit of a joke now..aka Mike Bassett England manager.
O`neill ..do me favour! He`s a top 8 Prem manager for gods sake! He`s not going to come to our club..wake up!
Phil Brown...Reasonable choice for us,not a great or necessary popular one but he knows how to manage in the modern game and has had some success.
Zola..Certainly would be popular as he comes across as a nice guy and the players, fans would respond to him. Also i think he could work with Cortese quite well.Would he want to join a L1 outfit though, when bigger boys might start calling soon.
Eddie Howe...Not enough experience and could he handle the egos in our dressing room and the boardroom. Also it`s easy managing a small club like Bournemouth where`s there`s low expectations.
Ithink it will be either Brown or an unknown Italian coach as we seem to have an Italian connection through Cortese who surely was behind Papa and Guly..someone will be whispering in his hear from the pasta country no doubt. As i said earlier why not Danny Wilson from Swindon,he seems to know how to set out teams well and get them motivated and organised,he`s experienced and has a track record with some success.

fair point but the thing which a lot of people are questioning is that Danny Wilson is no better than AP.

Zola?? He very nearly got West Ham relegated!! Certainly NEVER got anyone promoted!

Someone who has got teams promoted in the last 1-3 years is the key!

Billy Davies, Phil Brown, Neil Warnock etc please, obviously NW isnt going to leave QPR but there are a handful of managers out there at other clubs who you just know will get teams promoted we need to go for one of these. Not men out of a job because they are sh*t!!!!

Shearer with king kev in a role would be a dream . shearer passed all his manager trianing at Newcastle then took over them on his own with no help when they were already doomed he tryed his best but could not save them . with king kev they could hit hight's saint's fan's could only dream of plus the buzz of them would fill the ground twice over.
