FORMER Hull City boss Phil Brown is the first out-of-work manager to publicly throw his hat into the ring for the vacant Saints job.

Chairman Nicola Cortese has started the hunt this week for someone to replace Alan Pardew, after he was sacked on Monday.

And Brown is hoping he will receive a call from Saints chief Cortese, as he looks to make a return to management.

Speaking to the Daily Echo, the 51-year-old said: “I was very surprised on Monday morning to hear Alan Pardew had been sacked, but Southampton would be a fantastic opportunity for someone who has the ambition to get back to the Premiership, so of course I would be interested.

“I’d like to think I’ll get an opportunity to speak to Southampton and hearing what they have to say.

“Southampton were unfortunate to find themselves in League One, for whatever reason, but it is a club steeped in tremendous history and tradition.”
