Scunthorpe confirm Nigel Adkins accepts Southampton manager's job offer

Nigel Adkins Nigel Adkins

NIGEL Adkins has accepted an offer to become the new manager of Saints, Scunthorpe chairman Steve Wharton has revealed.

The 45-year-old has been in been talks with the club this week and is close to being unveiled as Alan Pardew's successor.

Wharton confirmed this morning Adkins, along with his trusted assistant Andy Crosby, had accepted an offer, although the deal is yet to be completely finalised and announced by Saints.

"The club has given permission for manager Nigel Adkins to speak to Southampton," a statement from Scunthorpe said.

"Nigel and his assistant Andy Crosby have agreed terms with the Saints but the club have yet to agree a compensation package with the League One side.

"The club will update fans as and when there's more information."

There is still the issue of compensation to sort out and possibly one or two other potential stumbling blocks.

The club had made no secret they wanted the new man in before Saturday’s League One trip to rock-bottom Swindon after Pardew's controversial sacking last week.

Scunthorpe had remained tight-lipped about speculation linking Adkins with Saints ever since it arose.

Upwards of 30 applications from working managers alone were received by the club for the post.

But Adkins, a father-of-two who has one son on the books at Doncaster, looks set to be the one to take Saints on.

He started his career as a goalkeeper at Tranmere, before moving to Wigan.

Injury ended his professional playing days at the age of 28, leading him to take up the reins as manager at Welsh side Bangor City.

In his two seasons there, Adkins led his team to a pair of titles and took them to the qualifying stages of the Champions League.

He then joined Scunthorpe as a trained physiotherapist in 1996.

Ten years on, after the departure of long-serving manager Brian Laws, Adkins was appointed boss on a caretaker basis.

After a blistering run of form, it took only a month for him to be handed the job permanently.

In 2007, he guided Scunthorpe into the second tier of English professional football for the first time in 43 years.

Although they were relegated the following season, Adkins impressively rebuilt the squad and took them back to the Championship, via the play-offs, in May 2009.

In that same season, when young Saint Joseph Mills was on loan at Glanford Park, the Iron also got to the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy final, losing 3-2 to Luton.

But perhaps Adkins’ most remarkable achievement was to keep Scunthorpe in the Championship last campaign.

He achieved that despite operating on a shoestring budget and with a ground that boasted an average attendance of just 6,383 – some 14,559 less than Saints had in League One and a staggering 37,004 less than Championship winners Newcastle achieved.

His record as a manager in the third tier is hugely impressive, with 40 victories from 75 games, giving him a win percentage of 53.3 per cent.

Adkins is considered something of a hero in Scunthorpe and he will undoubtedly be sorely missed at Glanford Park.

An OK choice, but only OK......Not really an improvement on Pardew and the timing of it all couldn't have been worse.

Would have preferred Martin O Neill to take us up and progress when we get there. Not someone who only has the experience to take us up, then down again

36% think this isn't a good choice. Some people need to wake up and realise we are in League 1, playing the likes of Rochdale, Hartlepool and Exeter. Why on earth would the likes of Martin O'Neill want to come here when he's a front runner to take over at Old Trafford.
Adkins is the man to take us forward, he knows this league and has done a great job with Scunnie, with NO budget.
I hate the fact that Pardew was sacked, but it's time to move on and get behind the team, whoever is appointed (unless it's Paul Hart of course!).

I must say I am disappointed with this appointment, not because of who the new manager is ( Martin o'neill was never gonna happen lets be realistic ) but because if your gonna sack a manager like Alan Pardew then at least get someone who is of better caliber which I don't believe Nigel Adkins to be. We were promised honesty with the new board, something happened for pardew to go - he would have gone end of last season if it was due to results - so why not be honest and say what happened. Good luck to the new man in charge I still believe promotion will be achieved this season, if so the start of the season mess will all be forgotten. COYR!-

I guess it is down to the man himself to make the final decision because it is not going to be easy making the change. Obviously if you have reason to think the decision is wrong, by all means put your point of view without being abusive and we are more likely to take it on board. There is no quick fix, our hopes are high but we have to have patience, and it is unlikely that he will be able to influence the result of the Swindon game except by his very presence.

We prefomed well away at rovers so hopefully will get our 3 points which will get us on a run that a new manager sometimes brings to a club. over the past few seasons we have been on the receiving end of new managers arriving at clubs and us being the next club they play, and it feels like we got turned over more than not. You seem to be missing a few steps. we are not in the premiership and don't need a manager from there. we need someone who is enthusiastic and can get us up. A premiership manager would only come here for money and nothing else at this point and would not contribute. And please leave your whining at home come match time, we don't need supporters like you.

However i've no doubt he has the best interests of the club at heart. We also have to remember hes probably not used to dealing with the media so prob needs to work on his PR a bit more but that doesnt mean he doesnt know what hes doing and i think its easy for a lot of people to missjudge this.

You might need to double-check your win-rates I think (if you're taking NA's total win rate for his career, you should do the same with AP really - then you'll find that NA's is much better).
PLUS, you seem to know nothing about how the new system will work - NA would be FIRST TEAM BOSS, Les Reed would be DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT - there is NO interference in first team affairs.

Pardew's sacking obviously had nothing to do with his ability as a manager, but obviously his ability to carry on Managing OUR Team was somehow compromised. I think now is the time to remember we haven't lost our team just a manager who will be replaced.

We even had moaners in the Strachan years and although I wasn't quite old enough to remember the moans there are still people who moan about Lawrie and Nichol. JUst because our league is league 1 so to some uneducated non football fans we might be seen to be in the top league but we are not, we are far from it. Why would anyone apart from a manager that has worked in the lower leagues wanna come here? Then add in to the fact that it must be hard to trust our chairman mainly because no one really knows the reason why Pardew and 2 of his staff had to go. You moaners out there just ask yourself one question, would you go to work for someone who has had a history of bizzare decisions with seemingly no reasoning behind them? I know I wouldn't. We should be grateful for any manager that is happy to come here and support him all the way. The people saying about no Premierleague experience are being stupid as most managers in the premier didn't have previous experience before they got their 1st job there.

He was clearly sacked for non-footballing reasons, that's why there was no replacement ready and why we have appointed a good young manager that I believe is going to do very well here. If you have to get rid of a manager and you have a limited time frame to pick another, you're not going to be able to take the cream of the crop, especially since we're in League 1!!!! It's been said soooo many times on here but some fans have such an inflated opinion of the club it's ridiculous. There also the same Cortese bashers who clearly don't realise that he was faced with a very difficult decision and made the right one in sacking a divisive manager that would ultimately have been bad for the players-results-club
. This is a good appointment, get behind him, go to Saint Mary's, and stop whinging all you yo-yo fans who will ultimately be proved wrong.

If, so, then it may well work out, although the players may be confused as to who is actually the boss!!
He'll get them beating defensive dogged teams that we haven't previously and will get them playing on the paddocks in winter. Hopefully he also do well with a budget as he got his old team up with no money.

From Iron O/S
There is a feeling of loss among Scunthorpe United supporters at the departure of Nigel Adkins.

Thanks Iron fans.. Welcome Saint Nigel
If you ask me a manager than can get his side up without any money to spend clearly shows his skill as a manager plenty of managers have had an open checkbook and have failed so i say welcome Nigel and good luck your gonna need it. I agree with you Tirau-Dan.

My only concern is that Nigel has had success by doing things his own way in the past. Under Cortese's new set-up, Adkins will have some likely level of interference in his decisions, which may lead to him being less successful. It's the new structure at Saints which worries me, not Nigel Adkins, who I'm sure would do well, if he were left to his own devices.

Once again there is a minority of 'fans' who think we can attract the best because we are a great club, yes we are a great club but look where we are. If Adkins does get appointed then I hope every true red and white will roar him and the team on at every game to the final whistle at last game of the season, as fans should do. We tout ourselves as being the best fans yet there is so much negativity and the guy hasnt even been confirmed. As for him not having any premier experience, neither did Moyes before he joined Everton and I bet there isnt a single person who would turn their nose up at him.

As for Pardew being sacked, if only a small part of the rumors about the sackings are true then he had to go. Get the who club working as a team without any of the in house negativity and the club will soar.

if you check the official scunny site theres a statement on there
The statement is on the Scunthorpe site and says that Adkind and his assistant have agreed terms and the clubs are now trying to sort out a compensation package
If the compensation package can be agreed that will settle matters for a time and lets hope that he will be allowed to get on and build on the foundations and get us up in the league. lets get behind him and get back on track (not that we were on track) but you know what I mean. It also means that 'Alice's Dad' and I can put our boots away as we wont be needed to run the Saints this time round-all that training for nothing.

I, like many of the above, got taken in by the Wow Factor hype. The fact of the matter is that AP lost his job, along with two other coaches, not because of the team's performance but for other reasons. That is clear, otherwise a replacement would have been lined up.

Now we have to get behind the team and give a chance to the new man. There will be a lot of expectations on his shoulders, but he has shown he can motivate teams to play good football and get out of this division.

We are not a million miles behind the top six at this point in time. If he can hit the ground running and get us winning again at home, there is every reason to believe we can get promoted this season.

Scunny feel they are losing a good man. How often has that been said about the managers we have had in the last decade?

I think this a good appointment, a manager without any baggage of failure in the Premiership. This guy will know what hard work is and given a fair wind should do ok.
But lets not load him down with too much expectation, let him find his feet and back him all the way. This is tough league, but a run of good results mid season will put us in with a shout of promotion. Don't expect instant success in September is my plea to fellow fans..

I've been reading the debate from afar but now I think I'll add my thoughts.

Nigel Adkins is an excellent choice. I think it couldn't be better considering the position we are in.

I think MON would have been a disaster given that he left AV after the owner decided he was going to have to sell players if he wanted to buy new ones (see http://www.telegraph
.co.uk/sport/footbal
l/teams/aston-villa/
7935179/Martin-ONeil
l-resigns-as-Aston-V
illa-manager.html).

Going back to Pardew's sacking, if the rumours about him applying for the AV job are true, it would not be surprising if his commitment to being Saints' manager was called into question and that his position became untenable, whatever the results. The club's statement includes the following which seems to say to me that they did not want to change manager but were forced into it, "We recognise that frequent changes to the football management are unlikely to assist in the winning of trophies and promotions. However, we are taking these steps to achieve our aims, which we share with all supporters, to get promoted this season, and secure long term stability and progress for our football operations."

So it's very good news, Saints, hopefully, will have a manager with a proven track record of getting a team out of this division and is committed to the long term future of the club. Let's get behind him and make him very welcome.

But Iron chairman Steve Wharton exclusively told the Telegraph that the deal had not gone through.

“The situation is that Nigel and was given an ultimatum last night by Southampton to resign and accept their offer, said Wharton.

“But Nigel was not prepared to do that. He wanted to walk out of Glanford Park with his head held high and everything agreed.

“I have tried to contact the Southampton chairman today but have not been able to get hold of him.

“I was not prepared to roll over and let Nigel leave for nothing.

“I wanted some compensation for what I felt he was worth. It was only a modest amount.

“From a selfish point of view I will be happy if Nigel stays with us.

“But I also feel very sorry for Nigel if this was a move that he had set his heart on.

“The Southampton people have been very difficult to deal with.

“They are probably not the right sort of people for Nigel to be working with.

“But at the moment I am not exactly sure what the situation is until I have talked further to Nigel.”

knowing how to target players and managing a big budget are plus points for a manager.i have seen many a manager working wonders on a shoestring only to be overwhelmed when they go to bigger clubs.
