We let everyone down, says Butterfield

Danny Butterfield Danny Butterfield

SAINTS defender Danny Butterfield admitted the players let themselves and the fans down in the 2-0 defeat against Brentford.

Nigel Adkins’ side slumped to a surprising loss at St Mary’s, ending a run of nine games undefeated at home.

Two costly first-half errors gifted the Bees a comfortable advantage that they never looked in danger of relinquishing.

And right-back Butterfield conceded that Saints’ level of performance had been well below par.

“We’ve finished the game disappointed,” he said.

“We all know that the standard that we set ourselves wasn’t there today, which is very disappointing and it’s something that we need to put right as quick as possible.

“We know that as individuals we didn’t perform well today.

“We certainly let ourselves, our teammates and the fans down with that performance.

“We don’t know the reasons for it, or else we’d have put it right.

“So we need to push this to the side and move on as quickly as possible so performances like that don’t continue.”

Whats the use of excuses AFTER the game. The whole squad needs to pull their fingers out and show some respect to the Club that pays their wages and to their loyal fans. Lets hope that some of these present under-performers are shown the door in the New Year and NA brings in some better replacements. Unless things improve there is little chance of Championship football next season

The team didn't go out to play badly. They thought they were prepared but it went wrong. If they learn from that..ok. Goals change games. Once they had two, Brentford's game plan would change. Matches like this happen. The truth is that we are probably one of the top 3/4 in the league, but we started the season badly and are playing catch up. If we had got to the top we would have gained enough points to remain there. getting there now is the problem. It's still tight but we must not allow the gap to get much larger. We must sign the right players in January.

Spot on franiow, as usual. Lets put things into perspective, it was an awful performance/result but sometimes things don't go the right way. Attitude wasn't right from the start but often you see that change during the game or by half-time. In this case it didn't. The timing of their goals, Guly's early missed chance etc paved foundations for a situation where the players couldn't gear themselves up and change the game. It happens. Though granted, we certainly need some additions in Jan and everyone knows in which areas that is. Lets hope Cortese/Adkins do too.

We should demand and I would expect a much improved performance up at Walsall next week.

Lets do our job and keep positive!

Im not prone to being an Echo knocker but I would like to see them asking the right questions of the right people. The OS only publishes Cortese approved propaganda so it falls to the local media not under the clubs control to do some proper journalism. The club seems to think it can ignore large issues just because it doesn't like them - like the bottle incident. Many other clubs have a much more open and honest relationship with their fans.

Don't agree with your comments about KD, he did have a mare yesterday and I'm sure he is man enough to admit it, he doesn't normally make mistakes like that.

As has already been said, if Guly had only headed it downwards, as you should, we would have been 1-0 up early on and KD's mistake may never have happened. I do agree with a lot of what has been written - because it's spot on and pretty much what we're all thinking and saying.

If KD had apologised for a shocker - then that would have been closer to the truth but probably Nigel has defended his keeper and blamed the Defence. Personally I don't have a problem playing Bart - but KD did produce a moment of magic with that penalty save vs Brighton -priceless.

I don't necessarily blame all the players yesterday or think it was 100% their fault only . I do hold Nigel to account and agree with M27W post about getting decent loan signings etc. The Team selection yesterday would not have beaten many sides in League One and would have struggled to grind out a result in a Cup Game playing League 2 opposition.

I like Nigel but he has sat ...too smug .......too aloof and thinks he can talk his way out of anything. He thought he knew better than the fans and put everyone out to loan and has no cover for players. He is left now with a predictable side - no options and no one on the bench.

Nigel's not gonna like the truth but he needs to think more medium and long term - even Punch could have done a jog for us part of the game yesterday with Oxy C coming on as an impact Sub.

The best thing he can do is offload Connolly in January and own up that when anything happens to Barney (like his Red Card fiasco) the team are stuffed.

We need another Striker - BUY ANOTHER STRIKER FFS and lets get on with getting promoted.

To M27W - even the cider could not have made up for yesterday !!

Blah! Blah! Blah!
Although this season there have been some decidely "iffy" performances this one on Saturday was the icing on the cake!
Kelvin on the whole is or "was" a good shot stopper, but he never has commanded his area. Our fragile defence has no confidence in him or for that matter themselves.
Our mid-field is far too lightweight, my Labrador Harry has far better ball control and tackling ability than Schneiderlin or Hammond.
As for RL, is he having a mega-sulk or what?, it always looks like he's just going through the motions. I've heard that he doesn't get on with NA, so what! He should put a shift in like everyone else should be doing, Saturday was like watching a second-rate pub side. I couldn't see a goal in us, no imagination, no idea, no work rate. We gave the ball away far too cheaply and made little effort to win it back!
I bet Brentford couldn't believe their luck, it was Christmas come early for them. Even Jaidi was beaten in the air quite a few times by one of they're "smallest" players for christ's sake!
Luckily it's still earlyish in the season and some of the results on Saturday went our way, but if we are really serious about promotion then the team need to pull their collective fingers out! No doubt NA has seen enough to know where our weaknesses lay, and I hope NC is willing to splash the cash to offset these because there are quite a few.
There still seems to be some dead-wood at the club, maybe a hangover from AP's reign. They need to be rapidly shown the door, we can't afford passengers and only want players on the field of play whom are fit to where the shirt!
In this day and age you'd think footballers would realise how lucky and fortunate they are to reap the financial rewards available for so little effort, perhaps if they were to work a 48hr shift in a factory next time they had two weeks off they'd feel like putting more into their next performance! Oh, and also have the worry of paying the mortgage, but there's no chance of that!
I've had my rant, and wish it made me feel better, but it hasn't. Deep down I don't think this shower of sh!te realise just how much we felt let down on Saturday. The optimist in me says keep going and we will prevail, the cynic in me say's nothing will change. Time will tell I think!.... :o)

I do not agree that these players are not good enough, but they certainly are not playing up to there strengths and ability, perhaps they have been in the comfort zone too long, after the latest performance they need some kind of wake up call, but I don't have the solution. Come on Nigel, shake them up.

Personally I don't want to see Saints go backwards in it's signings. BWP never really did anything at Saints.
We do need to buy in January though. We have a good squad, but it's not a great squad. The players who I think are safe to stay are: Bart, Kelvin, although I do think it's time to swap them around. Harding, Richardson, Butterfield, Fonte, Martin, as he is the future, Chaplow, Lallana, Oxo and Lee Barnard.
Add to that all the promising youngsters coming through. The rest need to be gradually replaced with good Championship players.
I know people will disagree, but these are my thoughts.
In January I would put Morgan and Rickie up for sale, put the money together with other monies available to strengthen the squad. I don't know who I would bring in, but N.A must have some targets. Whatever happens, please no more League 1 team of the year players please.
