SAINTS defender Danny Butterfield admitted the players let themselves and the fans down in the 2-0 defeat against Brentford.
Nigel Adkins’ side slumped to a surprising loss at St Mary’s, ending a run of nine games undefeated at home.
Two costly first-half errors gifted the Bees a comfortable advantage that they never looked in danger of relinquishing.
And right-back Butterfield conceded that Saints’ level of performance had been well below par.
“We’ve finished the game disappointed,” he said.
“We all know that the standard that we set ourselves wasn’t there today, which is very disappointing and it’s something that we need to put right as quick as possible.
“We know that as individuals we didn’t perform well today.
“We certainly let ourselves, our teammates and the fans down with that performance.
“We don’t know the reasons for it, or else we’d have put it right.
“So we need to push this to the side and move on as quickly as possible so performances like that don’t continue.”
