IN RESPONSE to Sylvia Harwood’s letter (The Argus, April 14), I agree with her concern about horses that are killed while racing.

I was listening to an expert on the subject who claims the jumps at the Grand National are impossibly high and must be lowered to stop this happening every year. Of course, this problem applies to other such events.

Horses are beautiful, magnificent animals. They are also highly intelligent and have a special connection with humans similar to dolphins.

Knowing all this, we must ask, “Should we abuse horses in this way?”

On TV this week, the American pop singer David Cassidy spoke out on the subject.

He really made his voice heard and, because he breeds horses himself, came across as the voice of experience.

He too condemned the Grand National. What does this say about England to the rest of the world?

I think we’ve just about lost the title of “animal-loving nation”.
