WHILE Saints look to seal promotion over the coming days, there is the opportunity for one player to book a place in the club’s history.

Today voting for the 35th annual Daily Echo Player of the Season award opens for business.

The long running vote will see one of the current crop of Saints stars add their name to their old trophy that contains many of the greatest players in the club’s history such as Alan Ball, Kevin Keegan, Peter Shilton and Matt Le Tissier.

There is no doubt the Echo Player of the Season trophy is the most prestigious award that can be handed to a Saints player thanks to the unique history it possesses.

But, as ever, it is the fans who will crown the man they feel has been the star turn for them this season.

This year’s vote looks like being one of the closest fought battles for many a long year with every vote likely to be vital.

Adam Leitch's Top 3

1 – Dan Harding
2 – Adam Lallana
3 – Jose Fonte

Unlike many previous years there is no stand-out player who seems nailed on to lift the trophy, as Rickie Lambert was last time out when he scooped a massive 66 per cent of the total vote.

Fans have already had their thinking caps on ready for voting to open and now is the time to get canvassing for your favourite.

Amongst the front runners for the award will be last year’s runner- up Adam Lallana.

Though he has had spells out of the team through injury his influence on the side has been massive.

Another very strong contender is Jose Fonte, the Portuguese centre half proving a rock at the back all season for Saints.

• See below for how to vote for your player of the season

Dan Harding has been a model of consistency at left back this season, Lambert looks set to notch another 20 goals this season while the likes of Lee Barnard and Dean Hammond have had decent campaigns.

There is bound to be support for Alex Chamberlain, the youngster having had such a huge impact in his first full season before injury put a stop to it.

Or how about Kelvin Davis who has been an ever present in the league for Saints and broken Peter Shilton’s long standing record for the most clean sheets in a season for a Saints keeper?

There are so many worthy choices this season that it would take a brave person to call the winner now.

So get voting, have your say and create another little piece of Saints history.

You must remember we got Pulis as part of the deal, a fine bit of business that was, he was a good player, apparently according to the rumours page, will be coming back to us for £500,000 this summer. Him and Fonte at the back would be one of the best CB pairings in the league, not good enough for the prem though

Player of the year for me is Jose Fonte, Been an absolute rock in defence and has marshalled the other defenders well. Weighed in with around 8 goals as well.
.
I'm please Adam Leitch picked out DH as being one of his top 3. I think DH has been, on the whole and over the full season, the most consistent player we've got.
.
Having said all that, it would be a shame to miss anyone out because, as a squad, they all have contributed massively to the results we've had this season. WELL DONE LADS.

Jose Fonte for me too! It has to be...he's our captain in waiting. He's hardly put a foot wrong this season...and been not only our best centre back but the best in the league...he's Premiership quality and we're lucky to have him! Lallana a close 2nd for me...he has proved how valuable he is to the team as we hardly lose a game when he plays...but the season the team breaks the record for the most clean sheets has to go to Fonte...who has scored crucial goals for us as well!

I voted for Jose Fonte on Saints site too. Easy decision. Played pretty much every match and success is built from the back! He's been a rock week in, week out.

I know one award Dan Harding will win...."which Saints player treats the ball boys with the biggest lack of respect 2010-2011!"

I used to play footy with Leitchy....he was a left back.....says it all - sticking up for the "Left Back Union" !!! :)

George Burley did sign Andrew Davies before he went off to manage Scotland. He was a class act which meant that as soon as Lowe waltzed back in he was sold. Since then it's been downhill all the way. I think he was on loan at Walsall at some point this season.

I guess Harding was in the league 1 team of the season but Dickson has given him a run for his money in other games where as Fonte has been the standout centre back...just hand him the award now it's a foregone conclusion and well deserved!

If we can have the same loyalty out of Lallana and Fonte in the same way as Davis then we will be in good shape for a number of years! I hope young Chamberlain looks up to these guys and stays for another season.

Given the estimation in which the Echo is held at St Mary’s, I doubt this award will be received with much enthusiasm.
.
Perhaps, if the voting were to be restricted to SISA and Saints Trust members (the only fan opinion the Echo is really interested in), winning might at least signify something?

Wavered between Lallana and Fonte. Just voted for Fonte because I reckon you build on your defence, but too close to call really. Lambert has done so much more this season than just score goals. He has been involved in other players goals, chased everything and always given 100%. KD great keeper. In the end, think the hair swung it ;-)

I remember Andrew Davies - he was class & a tower of strength at the back. His Saints career was cut short by Lowe (boo).
Jose has to be a sitter for the gong. he wins the ball or stops attacks in thseir tracks and though physically mean knows how far he can take it at moments. He must give the opposition and the refs nightmares. Being fair to Kelvin Davis Jose and his line have kept him less employed this season.
Adam is the team mvp but has been hampered with his injury.. he'll get it clearly next year. I think Saints play and act like a real squad with no primos and the results show it.
I'm loving it.. 2 from 3 lads.. you can do it.

He's got some other Janner on the case who lives a few hundred yards from the ground so all should be well. Will know tomorrow.

When are we going up then chaps and chapeses? Could be tomorrow, (apart from mathematical goal difference stuff), could be Monday, could be next Saturday, could be not at all....

So your keeper smashes Murray to the ground and it's our fault he's out for the rest of the season? Ankergren probably out too after Chaplow dead legged him. Serves you right if we lose to Huddersfield who are obviously a bigger club than Saints because they want to give us a guard of honour tomorrow. Something way beyond the tiny minds of Adkins and co.

KD got the ball, and no-one seemed to make much of it at the time! I'm sure no malice or intent was there, Davis isn't that kinda player.
Never saw the Chaplow incident so can't comment, but football is a physical sport and injuries do come about. Trust me, we know all too well as our treatment room has been overflowing as of late!

Still can't help b-itching about Adkins and your poxy guard of honour can you?
If you beat them well done.
If you don't so what.
I've said since we beat you that you wouldn't win another game.
You'll only be two or three points ahead of us by the end of the season,
which will be a lot closer than some of you had expected and will make the league table look more realistic.
We've had injuries all season and still have, so get over it.
One guard of honour is sufficient, so let Huddersfield do it if they want to.
Se you next season.
Oh well done ( again ) for winning the league......just in case you still feel you need to be praised for it....which seems the case.

Meanwhile Huddersfield boss Lee Clark - whose side are in need of victory in their pursuit of second place - has told the Huddersfield Examiner his team will give Albion a guard of honour.

He explained "We will give Brighton a guard of honour because I believe it's the right thing to do. They are worthy champions.

"The league table doesn't lie and they have been the most consistent team in the division. They've won lots of games and scored lots of goals and all credit to them.

"It's not down to me to tell any other manager how to go about their job, but as someone who likes watching football, the way Gus sends his team out is the way I like to see football played."

Yes it does.
A northern monkey sucking up to a bunch of "look at us everybody we want to be praised at every opportunity for winning league one and we will keep on bemoaning the day Southampton didn't give us our own way" spoilt b-itches, because he needs to win the game and by sucking up he thinks he may be handed the 3 points on a plate.
Do yourself a favour and keep your "fishing for compliments for someone or another club that gives a sh*t".....like Lee Clarke and Huddersfield.
You are getting so boring with your constant Adkins slating and petty girl like attention seeking it's really getting embarrassing and making you lot look so infantile and so not like real football fans.
Roll on 5pm tomorrow when you've had your own way and a big prom queen fuss made of you then hopefully you can put your claws away and we'll never hear about it again.

You're not wrong. They've now taken to posting quotes on here from other managers. Not sure I can keep up! I'm going on the arugus site now to quote Dagenhams manager complaining that we've copied their style!

God seriously you Brighton bum boys really want to get over youselfs regarding the guard of honour!! Did Colchester give you a guard of honour? No they didn't!! You lot will be going on about it next season in championship, they should be giving us guard of honour we won league one last season! Idiots get over yourselfs!! Get in the premiership win it and then we might consider giving you guard of honour. But that's highly unlikely to ever happen ever.

Brighton have earned their respect by winning this league...so why do their fans insist on throwing it away with this ridiculous theory that NA should offer himself up as a sacrifice at the Withdean?....tad foolish if you ask me! :O)

There's always quite a few there before the games and if we are in full party mode there's a few bars to choose from and it will be packed more than likely.
There's also the Station at Bitterne that will be packed no doubt.

Ocean Village Banana Bar amongst others if it's a sunny day will be a good crack.
Really you think many Saints fans will be going down there?
There's always quite a few there before the games and if we are in full party mode there's a few bars to choose from and it will be packed more than likely. There's also the Station at Bitterne that will be packed no doubt. Eh slugger and co?
oxford st after the game for me.
White Star etc. I'll probably walk up from Ocean Village a bit later when the sun goes down. If it's sunny and if I'm still able to walk of course!!
get a cab !
How much is it for a 500 yard cab ride nowadays!! Bloody good shout though if I'm smashed as it could end up about 2000 yards!
Think ill be heading over to the Saints at Millbrook apparently they had 400 there for the JPT. Thanks for the ideads though lads
It won't matter where we all end up as long as we all have a good knees up! COYR - Here's hoping!!
Keeping the faith here...just filled up me hip-flask (blimey those little blighters hold some liquor!)...and hoping beyond hope that it will slugged in celebration tomoz. COYR!!!!

Enjoying reading the celebration plans from afar, with a hint of jealousy! Wish I was there, however us NZ Saints exiles have our own knees-up today (Saturday) in Auckland at an English pub, so will be getting in the promotion mood (hopefully) from midday, then be ready at 2am local time for the Brentford game.
Good luck to all those going to Griffin Park, with or without tickets, let me hear you outsing the home fans as usual & cheer us on to victory & one step closer to promotion! COYR!!!!
