Southampton sign Burnley's Danny Fox

Daily Echo: Danny Fox Danny Fox

SAINTS have signed versatile left-sided Burnley player Danny Fox, the Daily Echo understands.

The 25-year-old, who can play as a full-back or on the wing, has completed a switch to St Mary's for a fee of about £1.8m, putting pen to paper on a four-year contract.

As reported earlier this week, Saints had been interested in signing both Fox and his teammate, striker Jay Rodriguez.

So far, though, they have only been successful in securing Fox's services.

The former Celtic player has signed in time to be included in the squad for Saturday's trip to Barnsley.

Hmmm... okay... don't really see why we need another left back or left winger but maybe I over rate Dan Harding a bit. Welcome to the new fox in the box. Seems a bit of a rich deal but time will tell. In Nigel we trust!

Sounds like a good player, shame we look to have missed out on Rodriguez.

I hope this doesn't mean the end of Dickson though, I rate him highly.

Lovely stuff. I guess he'll be taking over from Dan Harding, who I love but who could be more effective going forward.

Some football agent has just recommended taking a bet on us to win the league while it's still going at 16-1. Some big signings are on the way.

Not too sure why we need another left sided player as we have dickson and harding at left back and lallala and de ridder at left midfield. Price seems high too but in Na and NC we trust. Maybe Fox is the bait to catch Rodriguez?

Turns out that the Daily Mail actually got something right for once because they got hold of this possible move last week as well as the story that we may be going for Rodriguez too.
Seems a fair bit of money on a left back but he sounds like he has done well for them and good be another astute signing by NA. I hope we push for Rodriguez after his impressive scoring in the cup on Tuesday.
Exciting times!!

I too was a bit confused at this signing, since Harding and Dickson are both great left backs, but this seems like a smart deal; perhaps with Chamberlain gone, and Puncheon (hopefully) on his way out, Dickson is being preferred as a winger? He provides competition for the left, while De Ridder and Lallana provide competition for both the left and the right, with Fox and Harding fighting for LB? Just a thought. Regardless, welcome to Danny Fox, let's hope the Twitter rumour about a bid for Ebanks-Blake being accepted is true, and we get the proven Championship striker we've been calling for!

At 25 he certainly fits in the mold of what NA is building at our club.
There are so many rumours though, it could be Maynard or Jay Rodriguez next... or maybe someone who's not even been linked. lol

From what i've heard he's a quality left back, better than either Harding or Dickson. I wouldn't expect him to start against Barnsley but I expect him to be our 1st choice left back for the season. Does this mean the end for Dickson? Wasn't too impressed with the way he played against Torquay however as someone else posted, he could be moved to LM as back up for Lallana. Still hoping for a CB and striker. From what i've heard Gorkss wants to fight for his place at QPR so that deal may be off but out of the 3 strikers my preference would be Rodriguez as he's still young with bags of potential although I doubt Burnley will sell now they sold us Fox in which case Sylvan Ebanks Blake would be preferred option. He's quick, strong, good in the air and proven at this level. Maynard was injured most of last season, very quick but not strong or particularly good in the air due to his height. Lets hope we get someone in both positions soon then I really believe we can challenge for promotion. COYR!!!!

Who goes? I say Harding. I would cash in on Harding's L1 team of the year kudos. Harding did what Harding does on Saturday. We were very lucky not to concede early on if Howson hadn't shot straight at Davis. The chance came about because of Harding's failure to defend a high ball at the back post. He shrinks when he should get big and nasty. He does this practically every time. I lost count of the times he did it last season, especially away from home. We got away with it in L1 but not so sure the opposition will be as generous this term. As ever, I would love him to prove me wrong as Hammond did against Leeds. Deano would have been on the bench if it was up to me.

You know, this is why I would be an absolutely terrible football manager. In my heart of hearts I kind of agree with you but Harding is a good, honest pro and seems like a decent bloke and for that reason I probably wouldn't replace him until both his legs fell off. Fortunately, Nigel is a bit tougher than I am and demands even better in that position.
.
I still think Harding would be useful in the squad, mind, but I don't think he'll be a regular starter if it's the Premier League we're after.

Great signing! I can see Adkins looking at Fox as an option on the left midfield when playing a diamond system with Lallana at the top of the diamond, Cork and Chappers on the right. This would basically play as a 4-3-3 formation considering Lallana's attacking prowess and the 3 solid midfielders behind him. De Ridder could then play up front with Ricky!

I hope we can tie up a deal for 1 more quality centreback and a forward if the rumours above are true...something about a Wolves striker...not sure who?!!!

This player is a full Scotland international and strange as it may seem also an England Under21 international. Celtic bought him for £1.54m in 2009 and he moved to Burnley for £1.8m. I think he is an unsung very capable player.

Think this is a good signing - Prem experience with Burnley, SPL experience with Celtic. Still young. Apparently we offered £4.8M for Rodrigues and Fox. THis was rejected, we then bid £1.75M for fox and £4M for Rod. The fox bid was accepted, we have apparently now had a £3.5M bid accepted by Wolves for Ebanks Blake, who i would personally prefer as last time he was in the championship he smashed 30 goals in a season. Got prem experience and goals under his belt too.

He is ok going forward but defending and especially positional sense is poor. A squad player at best, though dickson is better.

I'm with you Saintade, it continues to amaze me that so many people slag Harding off. I'm still playing so only got to St Mary's 6 or 7 times last season, but every game i went to he was immense. Our change in fortunes coincided with the signing of Harding.

I reckon that part of the reason is that both Harding and Dickson are only average players at this level and we have ambitions far beyond that.Im sure one of them will move on soon and good luck to them.Lallana`s only weakness down the left is his crossing as he`s always looking to cut in onto his right foot and we need someone who can overlap and whip in pacy crosses. There's no room for sentiment at an ambitious club like ours.

Ebanks Blake would be a fantastic signing, he is different from all the forwards we currently have and adds a different dimension, he also plays better with a winger or two! and we have players capable of a decent cross!

I note Nigel Adkins comment that bringing in Jack Cork lifted Deano, Spider and Chappers and he hopes Danny Fox will do the same to Dicko and Dan Harding.. competition for places lifts players and sort them out in the pecking order. The other thing to take from it is that he is happy with Frazer and Butters on the right. It's a long season and the additions we have are solid additions for the campaign.
I know it's only the view of a distant fan down under but I've never had a single doubt we'll achieve the five year plan early and that means auto this year maybe even a Championship win. It's going to be a glorious season.

Up The Saints... again!!

That's the beauty of football. Five people see the same thing in five different ways. It's my opinion that Dan 'Hint of Lavender' Harding's defending is a bit lightweight at times. I would question your assertion that Dan Harding was the catalyst for 'our change in fortunes'. I, personally, think it had something to do with Markus Liebherr, RIP.

My View From Here says...

Ebanks Blake? looks to muscle bound, reminds me of Emily Heskey, opp's Emile Heskey, would rather have Chris Eubank, at least he'd pack a punch.

Dan Harding reminds me of Nick Holmes, never outstanding, but rarely has a bad game.

The Fox lad looks the business, according to a couple of Celtic sweaties I know, really good attacking LB, so competition for a starting place will only be good thing, it will keep everyone on their toes in that position.

Harding linked to Newcastle to replace that money grabbing spaniard maybe?

Burnley fans were not fussed to see him go - ok going forward but
sometimes neglected his defensive duties. However, there is a lot going on

is affecting players and I trust in NA to
get the best out of Fox who seems to have potential according to Celtic fans.
I think he will come on as a sub tomorrow and it will be interesting to
see where NA plays him. Given time I
am sure he will be an asset.
Anybody heard anything about Puncheon?

Yes that's what makes football such a great talking point at work and at the pub, i'm a defender so always pay special attention to the defence when i watch our beloved Saints, but yes it is just my opinion. And of course Markus Liebherr had plenty to do with it, I didn't say Harding was the Catalyst i merely stated that the change in fortunes coincided with his arrival. I remember watching the team before any new signings came in when we were playing all the kids and we looked clueless, i then remember Harding, Hammond and then Lambert come in and all of a sudden we looked a different side. if you want to split hairs it's Cortese we should be thanking as he sold the club to Liebherr (not literally of course) but his was his vision and enthusiasm that convinced the late Great Saint Markus. Let's not fall out over it especially if you're a Bitterene Park boy, i lived in Bullar road for over 25 years!

I wouldnt take any notice of their comments, I checked it out too, only a few posts from their negative 'posters'. Fox was signed by Brian Laws to play in the Prem but spent last season playing for a team in decline & for an inexperienced manager. That would have inpacted performance. The only burnley player that their fans were happy with last yr was Jack Cork, so I dont think they would have a good word to say about any of the 5 players that have deserted them this summer. I trust NA and lets see him in a saints shirt before we pass judgement.

I find this to be a very strange signing indeed. Dan is so consistent that Ryan hardly gets a look in. I remember Ryan's great run down the left wing to the bye-line, his cross for the incoming forward, who scored with a beautiful header, for Brentford at SMS a couple of seasons ago. We haven't even tried Ryan in front of Dan more than twice. Each is fully capable of going forward, whilst the other would cover.
What we really need is a big, strong centre-forward type capable of playing alongside Rickie, or even as cover for him.
Great match against Leeds last Saturday, bit low-key against Torquay Tuesday evening.
Still, seven goals, seven different scorers! Couldn't ask for any better.
I think we've nothing to fear this season. However, I'm having a hat made of chocolate, just in case!

Fox is a great signing, the only problem is that by my calculations theres only 1 space left in the 25 man squad rule. So the fact we need a CB and a FW means someone will have to be shipped out before one comes in. We have versatile players in Dickson and Cork who can play across the back four if required so depth isnt a problem. I rate Dan Harding I think he is one of our best players, but to me it seems an offer has come in for him that the club don't want to refuse and I expect to see him move shortly.

JP will be shipped out soon enough, but as you say, I would think maybe a couple down the pecking order would go as well.
Certainly we're in the market for a striker but we also need a gifted CB as well.

Actually I’ve done a bit of research on the ’25 man rule’ and ironically it only applies to the Premiership which is totally crazy. I did go to the Football League website and no rule exists regarding squad size.
I did Google it as well, and Premiership clubs are less than happy and expect it to be scrapped very soon. I can see their point as no other top European league inflicts this rule on their clubs.
Out of curiosity I counted our squad players and we have 27 listed not including Fox ATM, I guess that’ll be updated today. :-) Yeah, ok, I had a geeky moment.

There's rumours of Joe Cole this morning, they say there's not much interest from prem so he's looking at the Championship, West ham was his first choice but they won't buy before selling so that has moved us into pole position has he has been impressed with our style of play. The same place mentions we might be bidding on Anton Ferdinand too.

LOL. Never take this site seriously. Most of it is total rubbish, and I can't see us paying Coles inflated wages.

Don't need Cole. He's not a team player. Far too greedy. Ferdinand is suspect, otherwise Prem teams would be in for him. Rodriguez from Burnley would be interesting, as an expert penalty taker I can see him and Rickie fighting over the ball every time Saints were awarded a penalty!!

Fox is absolutely class, in my opinion. Can defend and attack. If the Ebanks-Blake story is true, it sounds like NC and NA are building a team not just to make it into the prem, but also to stay there. Both are young players (as De Ridder) who have tremendous potential. i thought we rather needed a CB or a RB, but, hey, my football knowledge must be but a fraction compared to NA´s.

Ok, I’m not a fan of Puncheons attitude, although I can understand his frustration with Chamberlain coming through the side to replace him.

I know that his attempt at using of non football based aggression to get ahead of Chamberlain might have been the cause of his alienation from the rest of the team.

That said if we cant sell him for 1m after scoring goals in the Prem perhaps with Chamberlains departure there is an opportunity to build bridges. Personally I wouldn’t mind if he has no friends and only performs to try and secure a move away from the club, as long as he performs.

This is what I meant, in Fox´s words: Fox added: "Southampton are a Premier League club in the Championship. The chairman's ambitions match mine, and I want to be part of something special here."
Well, they always say something like that, but it is true that we are building a team for the next 5 years in the PL.

Blimey, they are spending. Hopefully they will make too many changes at once and disturb the team unity but sooner or later they are going to be a tough act to stay with.

I think they´re spending on proven players, but not players for the future, like us. We may not promote this year (Although I´d bet we will) but we will then the next and then we will have a team that can play for a long time, together, in the PL. Long term planning it is called.

Harding's occasional mistakes well outweighed by his interventions in defence, as well as attack - so Fox a mystery, unless H is unsettled. I agree with comments that E-Blake not all he's cracked up to be; but we'll see. Guess barnard will want out, if not already facing HMP.

I am a burnley fan and I am so dissapointed he as left Burnley. He is a very good left back and can provide some competition for Lambert to take free kicks and will provide many chances for lambert to score from his crossing ability. Dont dismiss him until you have seen him in action. As for Jay Rodders, he has got better year after year at burnley. Saints will do well so prise him away from us but I think he will compliment Lambert very well up front if he did sign you saints
