It is believed the 24-year-old centre half had been inside the club, in London Road, with friends earlier in the evening where an incident had taken place.

But trouble brewed outside the venue, leading to police being called to the scene around 2.51am.

Mr Seaborne, 24, was treated at the scene by paramedics before being taken to Southampton General Hospital.

It is understood his family are at his bedside while vital tests and scans are being carried out.

Detectives are now investigating the attack and have already identified a number of potentially vital witnesses however they are urging anyone who was inside the club last night and this morning, or anyone who was in London Road and witnessed the attack, to come forward.

This morning the scene of the attack outside Junk Nightclub remained sealed off by police as well as a next door estate agent.

The forensic unit had arrived and officers wearing blue gloves were examining a side entrance to the night spot as well as an area at the back.

The next door estate agents was open but cordoned off by blue and white police tape while a police community support officer stood guard outside the cordon.

Members of the public on their way to work this morning were stopping and staring as officers went about their investigations.

Two people have been arrested in connection with the incident.

Witnesses should contact Shirley CID on 101 or the Crimestoppers charity anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Yesterday Mr Seaborne took part in an open training session at St Mary's with his team mates in front of fans.

The player has been at Saints since January 2010, after being signed for a fee in the region of £250,000 from Exeter.

Earlier this week Saints completed the signing of another centre half - Celtic defender Jos Hooiveld, 28.
