Spurs duo in winning England squad

10:34pm Thursday 10th November 2011

Two Tottenham Hotspur youngsters were involved in Stuart Pearce’s matchday squad tonight as England Under-21s continued their excellent start to the Euro 2013 qualifying campaign with a 5-0 victory over Iceland in Colchester.

Defender Adam Smith, who is currently on loan at MK Dons, played the full 90 minutes at the Weston Homes Community Stadium, but midfield colleague and former Leyton Orient loan player Tom Carroll had to settle for a role as an unused substitute.

The hosts looked like they would win by just the two goals going into the closing stages following Marvin Sordell’s first-half opener and Martin Kelly’s strike after 57 minutes.

But Pearce’s side turned the screw in the closing stages, with Craig Dawson heading home a corner before substitute Gary Gardner struck twice inside a minute.

England will be hoping to maintain their 100 per cent qualifying record when they travel to Belgium on Monday.
