Huge police operation for Saints' clash with Pompey

Rickie Lambert scoring against Portsmouth for Saints Rickie Lambert scoring against Portsmouth for Saints

IT will be one of the biggest police operations ever seen in Hampshire for a football match.

Hundreds of officers will have their rest days cancelled as the force tries to ensure that the south coast derby clash between Saints and Pompey passes off safely.

More than 200 police, including officers on horseback and the force dog unit, will be on duty in Portsmouth next month when the rivals meet at Fratton Park.

The cost of the operation on December 18 is expected to run into hundreds of thousands of pounds and will see key routes into the city guarded by police and 8ft steel barricades used to block sideroads to allow thousands of Southampton fans to be driven in safely under escort.

Aircraft will also be flying over the route to relay information on potential trouble hotspots to the enormous convoy, while bridges and key points along the route will be manned by police to ensure that there are no flashpoints.

They are extreme measures being put into place by police chiefs who feel that they have no option – and who are determined not to let a minority intent on fighting or causing disorder have their way.

It will be the first time that the two sides have met at Fratton Park for five years – and comes six years after riots broke out in parts of the city when the two teams met.

Further details of the mammoth plan, which will see up to 3,200 Saints fans transported to Pompey in a “coach bubble”, were revealed yesterday at a top-level command meeting.

As the Daily Echo went to press there were still several hundred tickets available in the Southampton allocation, leading police chiefs to believe that hundreds of seats in the away end could be empty.

Ticket sales closed at midnight last night.

It’s believed that the controversial bubble plan, which will see all Saints fans transported together in coaches under police guard, has left some fans angry, while the lure of a televised game has tempted others to stay at home.

The Southampton team coach will be made to travel to the city early, leaving Marchwood training ground escorted by four motorcyclists from Thames Valley Police.

Coaches full of supporters will then leave for Fratton Park in two batches – the first with fans travelling from Winchester, who will meet the first convoy from St Mary’s on the M27 and will travel into the city along the Eastern Road together at a slow speed.

The second convoy will depart shortly after, with the remainder of fans from Southampton meeting coaches in Bursledon to make the journey together.

Many local pubs near the ground will be closed, local businesses have been warned to expect disruption, and residents and shoppers heading towards Portsmouth on what will be one of the busiest shopping days of the year are being urged to avoid the area.

Steps have also been taken to educate local schoolchildren and known “risk” groups of youths, while calls have been made to ensure that essential services such as meals on wheels deliveries can still be made in the area.

Inside the ground, Saints fans will be policed by up to 50 of their own stewards. After the game, fans will depart together – with a predicted 46 coaches expected to form one convoy out of the city and back to Southampton.

Supt Rick Burrows, who is in charge of the operation, said that the number of officers was necessary.

He added: “We are constantly being updated on intelligence and the more I hear of that, the more I have to do it this way.

“Our priority is to ensure fans enjoy a good and safe day out.

“Anyone intent on causing trouble needs to know that it simply won’t be tolerated.”

Old Mr Burrows seems to be all about pr stunts and a failure to acknowledge. That the reason for these OTT measures are due to the police incompetence in not doing the 'basics'.

In the 70's when hooliganism was at it's height - the policing wasn't this heavy handed! Political correctness gone mad!
Tax payers money or Portsmouth FC? Where's the money coming from Mr Burrows to pay for all this extra policing now Portsmouth Football Club are in effect penniless?
I've run the gauntlet that is Fratton Park - after a Saints win in 1976 & 1984. The hatred all seems to be a bit one sided - is it jealousy?
I'm not coming for you, I'll be sat at home watching the game unfurl on terrestial TV! I wouldn't go on principle as no one tells me where, when and how I go to a match...we're not a police state just yet!

I think this has basically ruined the game to be honest. Simple measures not put in place in the past and now fans are suffering due to the police incompetence. There has always been a large police presence at these games.

What where the chances of trouble occuring at fratton with normal travel. Pretty low if the right precautions where put in place. Trouble at FP years ago due to the police failure to close roads/pubs like they are now doing. Trouble outside SMS last year due to allowing away fans out at the same time.

Even if there is no trouble in a couple of weeks. This has all failed due to fans not wanting to be told how to attend a football match.

The ticket/transport arrangements, the ticket buying procedure (the ballot system) and the fact that it's on BBC1 have all caused the low turn-out.
Why make everything so confusing?

The Outside Edge says...
2:44pm Wed 30 Nov 11

I will be attending the game, I think the police are going well and truly over the top.

The police management of recent games between them and us has been quite terrible, segregation of the rival supporters has been appalling, especially at SMS at the last game, it was ineffective and I truly believe the police wanted it that way to make easy arrests and get the courts to issue banning orders.

Don't get me wrong some so called supporters acted appallingly, but others taken to court because they ran down the road or shook a fist is stupidity, that's is why the courts threw out some cases.

The Football club must take responsibility for insisting their supporters leave the stadium immediately, by getting out the stadium responsibility shifts to the police.

These measures are extreme but not needed, it going back to the 70s/80s this no way forward.

I'm going and in all honesty have no problem with it. I use a walking stick to get around so when I think about it I probably would feel that little bit safer. It might seem a bit heavy handed and I have no doubt this is adding to the rivalry, in fact. The only reason I could be angry is that I have a few friends in Pompey it'd be nice to catch up with

I'm not bothered about the attention from the police.

The mindless few intent of causing trouble did exactly what was expected, however some responsibility has to be accepted by the police and the club.

The policing was woeful, many supporters were shepherded towards Freeborn garage with little or no option, the fencing was not adequate or erected properly (actually said in a court case) the police tactics was to contain Saints fans in one area, it happened to be Freeborn garage fans were not allowed to leave area.

Even with the full metal fencing erected at the car park by the steps was not enough because the away fans let out a the same time, a stupid decision, this happen far to often with visiting fans simply because once the away fans walk down the steps to Britannia Rd they become responsibility of the police and not the club.

I will be going to the game, I think these measures are overkill, but I accept it that's what the both clubs and the police want, however I think it going back not forward.

You're first line is the most relevant. If these individuals really do hate P%mpey fans, as many of our fans profess to do, then there are plenty of pubs down there they could walk into and express themselves. Throwing coins at a group containing OAPS, children and woman is not the act of a balanced person. It was embarrassing to be a Saints fan after the last game at SMS. Quite how the OB are responsible is lost on me.

Wish I could go, bubble or no bubble. BUT, the whole plan stinks of a total lack of brain cells at the highest level of the Hants Constabulary.

It's 20 miles ffs. Yes, if people want a coach, that's fine. But why would it be so difficult to cordon off the park and ride area (nr Farlington, just off the M27) for Milton Road ticket holders only and bus Saints fans in from there?

They could even install a beer tent and loos, with the beer tent helping to fund the operation, especially if Puppy's buying the first round! Now THAT would be worth another trip on Eurostar!

At least 4 people had their court cases stopped and the charges dropped half way through their case, some of what reported in the Echo at the time was exaggerated, this doesn't mean it didn't happen and those who caused trouble were rightly convicted, sentenced and banned.

As reported in court, failure to carry out a risk assessment of the fencing and other things, defence barristers called an expert in herris fencing who proved it was wrongly erected, the slightest push and the fence fell down, both the police and the club failed to communicate on security pre and post match, it was all said in court.

That is my reasoning for saying all were to blame, not just the idiots, but it could have prevented, that is why these measures are being put in place.

Find the whole bubble idea completely OTT and a real shame for supporters of both sides. As a PFC fan, I can well recall the trouble after the 04 game, the arrests, the bans and the tough sentences. The following year, not a spot of bother at all, people here realised that causing bother and then going home was impossible as there are cameras everywhere. I was at the cup game in 2010, awfully policed from the moment we got off the train, particularly in letting both sets of fans out together. If that game had been policed properly this wouldn't be necessary. Sure some on both sides would find trouble but the numbers would be low and if effectively policed dealt with properly. I just hope that this doesn't set a precedent but am sure it will when it passes off peacefully, and the police have made a fair wedge on it

Sympathy, I have sympathy for your family and the fellow fans of your club (your embarassing)......no ne is required on your part but thanks for thinking of us! you're right though, the tide has turned as it always has done between us and you. I wouldn't bet against one day it turning again!!
I work with a lot of Portsmouth Guy's and when we were in the Mire, there was no Sympathy whatsoever, just ridicule, so to me this is Pay Back time, no offense to you or any other " Proper Pompey " Fans, just my way at getting my own back on them, sorry if I offended you. Still gonna whip your **** in a few weeks, up the "Saints"
And to be fair Rocket, I would/probably did the same thing. Nature of the rivalry isn't it?!?! And we're fair game really aren't we. Just didn't understand why you thought I wanted sympathy from my original post. You should kick our arses, but then according to many on here last time you should. Your players bottled it in 2005, I would welcome the same again! Personally I predict a riot....or more likely a score draw or a rout for you :(

I would go for the Riot unfortunately, because there are a lot of Idiots out there so called " Pompey " or " Saints " supporters that just cannot go to a local Derby without making headlines ( for the wrong reasons ) proper To$$ers

I'm going, and cant wait. The Bubble makes it a little more interesting, but i'm more interested in watching the football. Hopefully 3 points and the bragging rights.
Sadly there are always going to be a few idiots from both sides that think its clever and makes them 'real' supporters if they kick 7 bells out of each other.
Its banter to me, thats all. Most dont really know what the rivalry is all about. Mostly urban myths.

The 2 cities are alot closer than people think.

I will always want Saints to be in the better league or beat Pompey, and will will continue to chant in the stands, but that's where it stays. I wouldnt injure or punch another person because of it..... It can only take one punch.

For the Pompey fans reading this good luck with finding a new owner. Non of this is the fans or employees fault. Too much history to be lost, and we would lose half our chants!

Queue the stick. ;)

We can go home in Limousines after we beat you Skates, cause we got Money and points, you can just crawl into the Sewer and swim home, do you want sympathy?? well you are not going to get any, remember a few years ago when we were in you're position? The tide has turned, bye, bye, bye Skates and good riddance.

We're not the same team or club even as 2005. I think our players had a haunted look about them that day.

We are so far removed from the attitudes & professionalism around at that time that we have broken many records since & laid to rest many hoodoos that hung over over us.

I'm not just talking about the successive home wins, but the complete ethos has changed thanks to Markus, Nicola & Nigel. We have a great structure, fitness, style & confidence that runs through everything we do.

Of course I hope & expect us to thrash you to avenge the 4-1, but as you know local derbys are so unpredictable.

this is my point i suppose ....... at the end of the day , why should the cops dictate to me where i can or cannot go ........ i thought we lived in a free country !
they can't. You can leave the ground and unless you are under arrest you are free to go where you like UNLESS you have a saints strip on in which case they have reason to act "in public safety". If you go in civvies and want to go shopping in pompey after the game ( as you would LOL ) then if you are prevented by the police and ultimately arrested then you can sue for false arrest and make a tidy some. the whole situation is a farce and the hampshire police are way out of their depth in being able to organise a legal and decent operation

The thing with this fixture is that the fans of the team who are currently lower placed tend to be the most angry. This is why Saints fans have traditionally seemed the more civilised, but is also why this has changed in recent years, hence the coin throwing and general twattery of two seasons ago. The mood this time is really difficult to predict as Pompey are obviously in dire straights and they'll be looking to take their anger out on us but, equally, they'll be aware it could be one of their last games and might care to rise above it. What I'd really like is for us to win and then clap their players off the pitch and applaud their fans. They've been a worthy foe and we may never see their like again.

Wish i was there for this. Never been to a Pompey away game before. Worked at the Crows Nest in Bursledon in 05-06 and the love has never stopped after bale and co tore up the championship but fell short. In regards to the police measures, what do you expect. People need to be protected when they go to games,One of my best mates from those days has a walking stick, his wife and a special needs son. How can he expect to go to these games without protection. i knew of guys who would come into my pub and say they were off to start a fight at a certain time in a pompey pub for no reason except they were from Pompey, yet our chef was from pompey and they thought he was a great bloke. Coming from Aus this makes absolutely no sense to me. I understand hating a club, hating a town but why people cross that line and want to punch, kick hurt people ill never know. Basically, i think if you really love "FOOTBALL" take the chip off your shoulder and just do what you have to do to go to the game. You have no idea how lucky you are to watch real football on a weekly basis. I have the Brisbane roar to watch(36 games in a row unbeaten and play out from the back at all costs). If you line up to get in a nightclub, bank or whatever just deal with it for one darby day. I couldnt think of a worse job than being on duty as a police officer on these days, just imagine if it was you. You would probably have a chip on your shoulder too. Just my 2 bob from down under, i guess im just jealous i dont have a chance to go watch the saints play live. Hope the form continues. COYS

Dear Mr Comeondownscummers,
Welcome to our site where we debate the nuances of the game, and police brutality.
It may have not come to your notice but tickets are not on general sale yet and only to season ticket holders who have done 4-away games, but now it is open to fans who have done more than 4-away games.
I believe Mr Burrows has an issue and wants to minimise the risk of our "hardcore" fans visiting your city for fear of trouble!
Doubtless to say as you are the biggest club on the south coast, with the best supporters in the world, the same hospitalities will not suffered when you pay us a visit. After all it will be many years before you step foot inside St.Mary's again.
Loving the man with the bell, and the friendly banter delivered when you visit our City (viz-a-viz The Joiners).
Hope Mr Fry saves your club so we can send you down in April and secure promotion to The Premiership.

Looking forward to L1 football next year after your 10 points deduction?

Which victory is more important to you, on the pitch or off?

The reason that not many Saints fans are going to the game is people like you, which is why the local derby will never be the same again. Is that really what you wanted?

As the Daily Echo went to press there were still several hundred tickets available in the Southampton allocation, leading police chiefs to believe that hundreds of seats in the away end could be empty

Why did you print this when it is clearly wrong???

The Ballot didnt end till midnight as you printed, so how could you know there were alot of tickets left????

Saints have sold out there entire allocation.

Come on Echo, sort it out.

They might stop it just after they are taken home they get back in their cars and drive to Portsmouth and then do it? not that i say Southampton will be the ones to start it all, it just seems a waste of money to spend on a football match at this rate it will all be on tv and we will have to pay to watch the match, on TV.
Also what is the point of a fight it wont solve anything just going to the cell for a night going to court and being fined or sent to prison and being banned from the games!!! Football is not the same, if only it could go back in time ? its all about money money money not a game.

A message for those that consider a football match to be a good excuse to spill blood:

For cryin' out loud, can we please get some perspective here? It's a game of football, a bunch of blokes kicking a ball up and down a feckin' field! Why do you have such naked hatred for people who just happen to support a different team? Skates, Scummers ... what is your problem? You can't even refer to each other without insults! And what about all the families that just want to go to see a game of football without having their heads kicked in? It's costing a fortune just to keep two groups of violent morons away from each other, money that could be well spent elsewhere. Maybe it WOULD be a good idea to see all the ones looking for a fight to be directed to a bit of ground to kill each other on - maybe then things would calm down a bit as the death toll rises, so removing some of the shallow end of the gene pool. It's pathetic and ridiculous the way you lot go on, with every evidence of enjoyment - you should be ashamed of yourselves. Jeez.
