Live updates throughout the day as the January transfer window comes to a close.

Click here to make this page auto refresh

18.30 - 4-and-a-half hours to go! And with that, it's time to pack up after just under 10 hours of rumour peddling. The sports reporters will pick up any transfer news that comes out of St. Mary's this evening.
Thanks for reading!

18.21
As Saints gear up for the match, it's time to start winding down here and prepare to hand over to the live match coverage.

18.00 - 5 hours to go!

17.45
Another vote. Are you feeling confident about Saints making any more signings?

If you're looking at the mobile page, the ballots don't show up - sorry!

17.34
Ex-Saints Iain Dowie and Dave Bassett (you probably forgot he was caretaker here) are now talking about Deadline Day on SSN. What do you mean, scraping the barrel?

17.16
The live match build-up to the visit of Cardiff City begins shortly. As a tease, Fonte and Chaplow are supposedly fit and in contention for a return to action.

17.00 - 6 hours to go!

16.44
Fleetwood Town turn down a £1m bid from Saints for Jamie Vardy. Leicester and West Ham are also reported to have tabled a similar bid.

16.38
Sky Sports News just cut to live footage of Jim White arriving at work. Shoot me.

16.34
It's important to gauge public opinion, so here's another ballot in light of a few comments posted in the last 15 minutes.

16.15
Every year there's a host of rumours which turn out to be nothing more than the product of an over active imagination.

Best ones I've seen this year are Altidore looking for a house in Chilworth and Gary Hooper being at Southampton Airport - minutes before taking to the pitch at Hampden Park for Celtic.

What are the most leftfield rumours you've heard? Leave comments below or tweet @dankerins.

16.04
Liam Ridgewell's move from Birmingham to West Brom has been confirmed. Good news for Saints ahead of the trip to Brum on Saturday evening.

16.00 - 7 hours to go!

15.57
Nicky Maynard, the one-time Saints target, has completed his medical at West Ham.

15.12
Going back to the Kris Commons rumour, Neil Lennon has said repeatedly over the last month that he would sell neither Commons or Hooper. With the return of Puncheon, do the fans think the wide positions are an area of concern? Vote now!

15.06
Changing of the guard at Sky Sports. Hayley McQueen and the softly-spoken bloke have been replaced by the fella who used to be on Blue Peter and Kirsty Gallacher. Yes, this is as interesting as it's been in the last hour or so.

15.00 - 8 hours to go!

14.53
To paraphrase Jamie Redknapp, Twitter is quite literally alive with news of Saints having an offer for Kris Commons rejected. Of course, this doesn't actually mean the website is no longer an inanimate object. However, Saints were linked with the Celtic winger earlier in the transfer window...

14.24
A well known online bookmaker is offering fans the chance to have any name they want mentioned in a World Record £83m transfer deal. Take a long hard look at yourself before posting a link to it referring to a Saints player.

14.00 - 9 hours to go!

13.55
Wayne Bridge has completed his loan move to Sunderland. The former Saint hasn't exactly been flavour of the month for, erm, well lots of months at the Etihad Stadium so hopefully do well with a fresh start in the North East.

13.46
I have returned to discover that nothing of any note has happened. Brilliant.

13.15
Things may go quiet for a few minutes now whilst I go and grab some food very quickly. I fully expect Saints to sign a whole new team before I get back.

13.10
Worth noting this is the first transfer deadline day without Georgie Thompson on Sky Sports News in quite a few years. I do however think Hayley McQueen is doing a stand-out job. I'm still very jealous of Sky's oversized touch-screen TV, though.

13.00 - 10 hours to go!

12.56
Time for another poll, I say, to help pass the time. Bearing in mind the Saints squad as it stands at the moment, what do you think will be the outcome at the end of the season?

12.37
After years of signing no-one other than former Saints players, Stoke seem to want to repay the favour if you believe the rumour mill. After Upson and Collins, Danny Higginbotham is now being linked with Saints once more.

12.29
It's all gone a bit quiet during the lunch hour so far. However, some of the rumours going around involving Saints and being talked about by fans online - I make no claims for veracity of these!

Out: Connolly, Barnard, Holmes
In: Collins, Heskey.

On the plus side, this the first deadline day since 2009 that I have not been asked about Michael Owen coming to Saints, so that's good.

12.21
Saints fan @alan_ridge on Twitter has uncovered what he thinks will be Pompey's new team picture after the deadline tonight:
Portsmouth squad joke

12.04
Sky Sports are screaming about AC Milan being after Tevez - in no way Saints related, but I think it's safe to say we all wish that deal would just happen to prevent the Argentinian being the only Jim White talks about for the second year in a row.

12.00 - 11 hours to go!

11.53
The Nottingham Forest teenager who put four past the Saints youth team last week is the subject of a bid from Chelsea. The West London side has tabled a £1.5m bid for 18-year-old Patrick Bamford.

11.40
Okay, I made a mistake. It happens every now and then. Andy Keogh won't play against Saints in the FA Cup replay as he wasn't eligible for the first match. Thanks to Alan.Of.Eastleigh for that. The rule in question is 15(f) in the FA Cup rules.

11.27
Jason Pearce, Tal Ben Haim, Jamie Ashdown and Ryan Williams are not at Portsmouth's training ground in Eastleigh. Has the fire sale begun?

11.19
The Sky Sports News yellow bar of news is up and running, and it's reporting that Irish international Andy Keogh has moved to Millwall in a £400k deal from Wolves. He could play against Saints in next week's FA Cup fourth round replay at St. Mary's, as he's not cup tied.

11.13
The comment from Adkins is as vague as ever, but the optimists among us will take it as an indication work is indeed being done to bring in someone today - most likely Danny Collins, who is still at Stoke's training ground according to reports.

11.11
Nigel Adkins on Saints' official website says: "Any deal we do has got to be right for this football club and we believe we've brought some good players to this club already, and we're constantly striving to improve."

11.06
Hayley McQueen on Sky Sports News has just cut over to Spurs' training ground. Doesn't quite seem the same without Redknapp hanging out of a car window.

11.00 - 12 hours to go!

10.40
Former Saints target Nicky Maynard is another one being flirted with by Big Sam. Sounds like the Upton Park outfit are serious about trying to keep Saints off the top-spot.

10.08
Looks like it could be a busy day for Sam Allardyce and West Ham. They are looking at bringing in Barnsley's Ricardo Vaz Te.

10.00 - 13 hours to go!

09.58
Liam Ridgewell is leaving Birmingham for West Brom, it looks like. The £2m deal could be good news for Saints, who play the Blues on Saturday evening.

09.48
Down the road, Pompey are expecting a fire sale to help them pay wages and a £1.6m tax bill. Do they have any players you think would make it into Saints' side?

09.40

09.33
And could the Danny Collins deal be back on? Yesterday personal terms were a stumbling block apparently. Whispers are now suggesting there could be an attempt to revive the deal...

09.28
Meanwhile, the Daily Mail reckons Nigel Adkins has tried to get Matthew Upson on loan from Stoke City, only to be rebuffed by the Potters.

09.26
In the Championship, Saints' title rivals West Ham are chasing highly rated Manchester United youngster Ravel Morrison.

The midfielder has supposedly fallen out with Sir Fergie after demanding £30,000 a week - despite being 18 and having never played a first team game.

09.23
In fact, Bridge could be joining fellow ex-Saint Kevin Davies, who is attracting the loving gaze of Martin O'Neill.

09.19
Not directly Saints related, but of interest to many I'm sure - Wayne Bridge is reportedly having a medical at Sunderland.

When he left St. Mary's in 2003, many fans thought he'd be back one day. Would you still want him?

09.15
If for some reason you actually have to pop out and do some work today, you can get a mobile version of this blog at m.dailyecho.co.uk.

09.08
But what about players going out? Saints suddenly seem very top heavy when it comes to strikers. Will we see Lee Barnard go out on loan, for example?

Will Arsene Wenger come back once again to snatch away some young talent? Luke Shaw, who made his first team debut on Saturday, is supposedly attracting attention from the Emirates and elsewhere.

09.02
Obviously, from my point of view, it would have been nice if the Sharp signing had been announced today, just to give me something to report, but ho-hum.

So instead, you'll have to make do with this poll for the time being:

9.00 - 14 hours to go!

Good morning and welcome to the Echo's transfer deadline day live blog.

As you've probably heard by now, Saints yesterday brought in Doncaster striker Billy Sharp for £1.8m - by far and away the biggest transfer of a very quiet window so far.

However, the smart money is on a last ditch attempt to sign an extra centre half after a move for Stoke's Danny Collins reportedly fell through yesterday.

You can check all the players Adkins has been linked with in our transfer rumour round-up.

Of course, other clubs around the country will also be scrambling to put deals together, so we'll throw in deals from Championship clubs and noteworthy transfers in the top flight too.

If you want to have your say, either leave a comment below, mention @the_saints on Twitter or text SFC and your message and name to 80360.

Just a quick note about Jason Puncheon before tonights game. If he plays lets get fully behind him. There was a lot of pressure on him stepping on to the field at Millwall in a Saints shirt, yet he was one of the few players on the pitch to show any real quality. Let's draw a line under what has happened in the past and treat him like a new signing.
We can't have any negative chants from the crowd in these next few key games to the season. 100% behind Saints to drive them back to the top of the league.

Im hearing that Lee Barnard has accepted a deal to join Doncaster for a month/rest of season as Dean Saunders looks to replace Billy Sharp, this was a part agreement that led to Saints signing Sharp.

Crawley Town have asked if they can take both David Connolly & Lee Holmes on loan for a month which could turn into the rest of the season after the window shuts.

I think this has legs being as we now have Lee and Sharp on the books..... (Lambert, Sharp, Lee, Guly, Barnard, Connolly... too many cooks?) and with Puncheon back in the fold, and Holmes never really fancied....

I have watched Saints for near on 50 years. Seen a lot of changes in football, many not for the better. The abolishing of transfer and wage capps, the ability of players to hold clubs to ransom, doing away with all season transfers, points deductions, allowing fifa to run our game virtually.
The game was financially stable for the most part then. The FA cup was a trophy that was more important to supporters than the European cup. It was a game that belonged to the supporters. Players stayed at clubs for several years. A game played by men and not boys full of theatrics.
i am not a lover of pompey, yet neither have I ever been a lover of points deductions from day one. Or seeing clubs ripped to pieces
We are the best club in Hampshire and have been since the late fifties. I want us to prove it on the field against our pompey rivals time and again in the future. Watching them getting ripped apart off it doesn't really fill me with pleasure.
What is happening at our club is sensible financial management. By committed people. Long may that last.

A couple of questions:

Can someone explain to me why we would want Heskey? He doesn't really have the right profile, does he? Not with the way the club is now run

An extra CB would be good though. I know he's from down the road, but Jason Pearce fits the profile better - at least he's got a few more years left in him! Maybe some of you locals know more about him than I do.

Exciting times afoot. Looking forward to seeing the "new and improved" Saints squad in the flesh vs Burnley and West Ham.

With a flat atmosphere at St Mary's vs Leicester .....

With players stroking the ball around with no end product and cutting edge ...

With (it's history now) Oxy C and his Dad letting greed rule the roost ...

Enter Jason Puncheon ....

He has a role to play and if he can inject the cutting edge required and produce good movement and passing - then he is an option for Nigel to use as he sees fit.

The players must come up with honest hard working endeavour and fight for the Win.

Special entertainment using the buckets will be held at half time including:

* 'Duck or Dive Skate?' - Poopee fan sits barrel of vomit while bucket of sh!t is thrown at him.

* 'Derring Do Poo' - Ten Poopey fans gather under 40ft pole from which bucket of sh!t is poured. Last skate to run wins.

* 'Tall 'n Small Skate Intercourse' - very tall skate woman has to think of a way to have sex with very short skate bloke using a bucket.
(clue: woman's head, bucket, handle, bloke, swing)
Ten Poopey fans! I take it they haven't got a game tonight then?
They are drafting in seven members of the Poopee Poetry Society as there is also a special Skate "Come up with a word or phrase that best describes what to do with your club and which also rhymes with bucket." competition.

Just heard from Staplewood... Jason Pearce was spotted on his way to have a medical whilst the U21's were playing earlier on, last minute deal due to happen maybe?

Just a quick note about Jason Puncheon before tonights game. If he plays lets get fully behind him. There was a lot of pressure on him stepping on to the field at Millwall in a Saints shirt, yet he was one of the few players on the pitch to show any real quality. Let's draw a line under what has happened in the past and treat him like a new signing.
We can't have any negative chants from the crowd in these next few key games to the season. 100% behind Saints to drive them back to the top of the league.
PUNCH can be our secret weapon and adds that quality to unlock the midfield and feed the Strikers ...

I'd love to get Pearce, they are all talking about rebuilding their team around him. That would be awesome!

Just a thought. As we now have Sharp (which is amazing) we have lambert, sharp, lee, barnard, connolly & guly if needed. That's potentially 6 strikers. No team needs 6 strikers whom all want to play first team. I can understand 4 but even that is above normal. So, are we expecting at least one to be leaving before midnight? I'm not being sceptical but could lambert be leaving? Did NA know this and so stepped up the sharp interest? I'm genuinely interested in what others think.

Lambert isn't going anywhere. Looks like Adkins is revamping the forward options for the Premiership, you want them to have an understanding before we get there, and at 1.8m Sharp is a steal!

I expect to see Barnard go out on loan and sold in the summer, and I doubt we will extend the contract of Connolly beyond the summer.

Leaving us with 4 strikers when we are in the Premiership, each a little bit different from the other (I'm counting Guly as a striker)

Where's this Vardy rumour from? I don't think we'd be after another striker, and he's not the youngest, nor proven in the football league. And for more than Tubbs, I don't think it's worth it.
