Saints 1 Cardiff City 1

RICKIE LAMBERT RICKIE LAMBERT

Saints closed the gap on Championship leaders West Ham after grabbing a second-half equaliser through Rickie Lambert.

Lambert netted his 19th of the season from the penalty spot after good work by the fit-again Adam Lallana resulted in a Kevin McNaughton handball.

Cardiff had taken a controversial 36th-minute lead through Craig Conway.

Goalkeeper Kelvin Davis appeared to be impeded before Conway's deflected strike hit the back of the net.

Saints new boy Billy Sharp was not signed in time to play tonight but Nigel Adkins' side has closed the gap on West Ham, who lost 5-1 at Ipswich.

That's a result, I'll take that. Come Saturday we will be firing on all cylinders again.

yes a far result, Cardiff came at us with all gun's a blazing, Saints only had half their big gun's but Cardiff had a fall strength squad, I imagine the happiest fans tonight is the Birmingham fans, the saddest has got to be West ham fans (oops).

Hopefully that'll restore a bit of confidence ahead of Saturday's game. It gives us something to really build on going into some massive games, and with Billy waiting in the wings things seem a lot brighter.

Not much going on 1st half, robbed of a couple of pens and god knows how we didn't win in the end! Tad Lee bubbly and energetic, like a puppy eager to please. Puncheon committed. Important we didn't lose, and performance 2nd half good. Only negative we dominate without really dominating?!! Plenty of punches thrown without causing too much damage. Bring on Brum and let sharpy at em!

Weak referee with no asistance from the linesman on the Itchen north touchline. Three blatant penalties only one giving. Cardiff set up one, four one four one up front, and contained us in the first half. Their goal was scored Chaple end and all the SAINTS players were up in arms over something that was not clear to see from where i sit.
Second half we started to attack and bossed the game to the final whistle. One of those games where nothing was going to pass their goalkeeper until Rickie stepped up for the penalty. Not firing on all cylinders but a massive improvement in our play.
We should take a lot of confidence into Saturday where another draw would be a good result.

Good end to the game, we finishe strongly and were unlucky not to get the winner. Puncheon was our best player everything that happened attacking wise involved him. T.Lee looked sharp and energetic, slotted in well and was always looking to get in behind. He had about 3 different songs doing the rounds in the northam/kingsland north!!
On a side note what's happens to the home atmosphere recently?? It's been flat and pretty quiet IMO, we need to drive the players forward for this massive month ahead. COYS

Agree to a point we weren't great first half but should've hand atleast one pen, thought Lambert went looking for his but the second should've been a pen so on that we should have been even at the break. Second we were much better and unlucky not to have nicked it. Still better performance and think the confidence starting to come back, as for Lee nearly made himself a hero if he'd have had just got that inch closer. Big test Saturday but feeling quietly confident. Good to see the crowd getting behind em again and no boo boys at half time!!!! COYR'S!!!!!

Puncheon looked very good. Couldn't wuite work out why he came off for Tadanari Lee and not Connelly who looked a bit lightweight all night.

Though he gives the game a way though a bit with his hand signals indicating where the ball should be played, I liked what I saw from Lee. If he had stretched that little bit further and poked it passed the keeper it would have been the stuff of dreams!

Good view of Lallana being taken out and it was a definite penalty. Great game however, and we really took it to them second half. Miles better than Leicester and should set us up for a crucial match next week! COYS!

Agreed, scrappy first half, no clear chances really, they scored a deflected goal after a bit of a bundle in the box.

Ref was poor throughout not just the pens. He allowed Cardiff to slow the game waiste time and disrupt Saints by doing thing like picking up the ball and carrying around when he gave a fee kick to us! Unbelievable week

Saints looked back in business in the second half. Which was all the more impressive considering that about a third of the kingsland stand around me started emptying out with then minutes of regulation time to play -- at 1 - 1 no less, and with saints in the ascendancy in end to end stuff. I realize it's a working night, but that's rubbish support for the boys out there who were pushing fo a winner.

Pompey sold their best young starlet for a paltry $400k. It won't pay the week wages let alone the taxes.

They still have three choices, get sold, pay the taxes or wind up and time is running out.

The only people remotely interested in investing in shonky asset-less outfit like Pompey are crooks to run tax dodges or laundering operations.

A good result considering what went on around us last night with regard to West Ham & Hull & our form going in to the game, plus the roll that Cardiff are on.

Sure, a win would have been even better of course, but the manner of the 2nd half performance bodes well for a revival & automatic promotion.

I think that the team for Saturday should be largely unchanged; realistically I would just swap Sharp for Connolly. The only debate in my mind is whether to have T. Lee on from the start in place of Puncheon, but he did play well by all accounts.

Plus, if Chappers is fit, I'd have him on the bench to come on for Spiderman if we're not bossing it by half time.

Listened to game with Radio Wales commentary and only penalty according to them was the one given. They liked Lallana a lot but felt Davies was a weakness which Cardiff needed to try and exploit (they put their goal down to him). In the end they were desperate fro Carfiff to hang on for a draw.

Remember scummers the worst case scenario that can happen to you next season is that you could be playing us. Not a nice thought considering you blew a great chance of automatic promotion.
Dear god dont you sad people understand you might not even have a club next year

Just a thought. If Pompey do go down the pan, dont the teams that have got points against them lose those points? Thats 6 for WH, 6 for Cardif and 1 from us. If thats the case, happy days!!

Why? Come up with some reasons not just gob off! I went to Millwall and last night and feel that we are back on track. Now don't be a Pr*ck...

Grief! Those fish just keep swimming round and round in circles uttering the same old cr4p whilst forgetting the facts.

If I had a goldfish bowl, I'd stick them in it, overfeed them and watch them slowly bloat to death.

Still, their various corrupt owners have done much the same, only it’s taken a little longer.

Bye bye Poopey! The taxman’s coming for you, he’s coming for you, you dirty skate lowlife, he’s coming for you.

Listened to game with Radio Wales commentary and only penalty according to them was the one given. They liked Lallana a lot but felt Davies was a weakness which Cardiff needed to try and exploit (they put their goal down to him). In the end they were desperate fro Carfiff to hang on for a draw.
Yes, Davis is generally weak and doesn't really ever command his box. This level is about his best and he would probably struggle in the Prem tbh.
Unfortunately we don't have much alternative unless Bart starts to play more to get confidence but that is questionable too.
Our defence is too leaky at times and we need to patch it up. Birmingham is going to be tough but reckon we can get some kind of result! COYR!

Big improvement on last 2 games, Lala looked hungry, Fonte will need to work very hard against the Serb at Brum tall f*****.

I like T Lee he should be a huge asset in the box which we seemed to be a bit frightened off last night. Beginning to think that Connors and Barney will find it hard to get a look in from now on.
This 5 sub rule is ridiculous when there is no decent reserve competition.

As for those swamp dwellers who keep swimming onto this , you can tell that basically it is secret admiration for SFC,from them as their bus heads for the scrapyard.

Poopey Phil is definitely an admirer!!!

Just please... please.... practice scoring and defending from corners!
February HAS to be where we kick on.
we wernt poor first half
Shots on goal 1st half = 0
Attempts off goal 1st = 2

That is a good half of football to you?
We were lucky it was only 1 down.

Great 2nd half.

I stand by my statement and I'm sure 99% would agree
thought we kept the ball well just couldn't get shots off, ref was well against us and cardiff started well, just because cardiff started well doesn't make us very poor

and we've never replaced Le Tissier! what on earth is going on?

Man Utd struggle when Rooney and Vidic are out.
Man City struggle when Kompany, Ya ya Toure, and (god forbid) Silva are out.
Liverpool have struggled ever since they sold Xabi Alonso.
Chelsea have never been the same since they got rid of Jose Mourinio.

Perhaps the people responsible should be fired!

Pre-Adkins if Lallana was out we were unbalanced, and couldn't buy a win without him-stop him from playing and we lost. Adkins has managed to balance up the side, so that with or without him, we have got results. You could also argue that with Billy Sharpe, and Tadanari Lee, we can now cope without Lambert. Chaplow missing is another problem that we have to learn to deal with, but if I'm honest I don't think that it will be too long before Nigel has the answer to that too.

For the life of me I can't believe the negativity that has been surrounding the team of late. While results have been steadily poor for last couple of months, we are hardly at the risk of getting relegated, or going out of business.

We are in year 3 of a 5yr plan. Do you really believe that we had planned to go up this year?

The squad isn't ready for premier league football. I'm certain that this year was about consolidation, and squad building. The management ethos around the Saints is built upon slow, and sustainable growth.
That said, Nicola demands that we have backup plans should the original plan go off track, and that is exactly what has happened this year with us over-achieving.

There is no doubt in my mind that we will already have targets in mind for WHEN we get promoted. Best of all, we are a fantastically well run club which has invested heavily in the future with our academy production line well and truly up and running. We will also be operating within the new financial guidelines, while others are desperately trying to cut costs to comply.

We are a club that has nearly everything in place.

The future is bright - the future is red and white! COYR!!!
