Adkins happy with Saints squad

Nigel Adkins Nigel Adkins

Saints boss Nigel Adkins admitted he is happy with his squad as the transfer window slammed shut last night.

The arrivals of Tadanari Lee and Billy Sharp have boosted Adkins’ strike options considerably, while Jason Puncheon’s return to the fold has also been a bonus.

“We’ve got good options now,” said Adkins. “From here on in I like to think we’re going to be very, very strong.

“What attack-minded players we’ve got and I’m really optimistic we’re going to keep exciting our supporters.

“We’ve got games Saturday/Tuesday, Saturday/Tuesday so we need to be strong and I believe we will be.” Full story in today's Daily Echo - together with report, reaction and pictures from last night's match.

Tony in Liberia says...
9:18am Wed 1 Feb 12

Morning all,
Since I am no longer Tony in Liberia but Tony in Woolston, at least for a while, here are my thoughts on the game - first half, we were dire and Cardiff could easily have gone further ahead (one particular header chance early on, which should have been buried). Best player on the pitch - which the crowd recognised when he was subbed - was Puncheon... he was obviously up for it, and our best stuff came through him. However, their goal was a definite foul on Davis; I thought he had blown for that, and couldn't believe that he'd given the goal.

Second half we were much better and should have won. I was right behind that goa, and Adkins is right about the penalty claim at that end (couldn't tell the other). If only we could have played like that all game... but that could be a turning point for the season, arrest the rot, etc.

Negative points - and I hate saying this, because I'm a big Connely fan, but I think he's finished. With Sharp & Lee (who looked useful, but finding his feet a little) on the boat/bus/building, I can't see him getting much more game-time.

Secondly, we only have two balls - crossfield diagonal to Llalana, or edge of the box to Rickie for the knock-ons. First half the passes just weren't getting there; rather telegraphed and not hit accurately enough, and Cardiff picked them up. Second half was better, but what we don't have is anyone in the middle creating something special. And that tactic only really works when Adam is at his best, but I don't think he's playing as well as before his injury yet.

We miss Chaplow's bite in midfield, but more we miss having someone who can do something special in the middle of the park & give us a different attack plan. Hopefully Billy & Ricky up top, with Guly / Punch and Adam more effective, with Chaplow for the energy, will get us ticking again.

Definitely saw enough second half to still believe; Cardiff are no mugs, and that was a good result overall. But a better ref and it would have been 3-0...

Don't agree with that to be honest, Chaplow is a quality player, but can't see him getting back in the side that easily. Can't see how you would leave Puncheon out as well, thought he was quality last night. my strongest XI would be:

Davis
Richardson, Fonte, Hooiveld, Fox
Puncheon, Cork, Schneiderlin, Lallana
Lambert, Sharp

Subs: Bialkowski, Martin, Chaplow, Falque, Lee

Shame we can't have 7 subs like we did last season, players like Hammond, De Ridder, Connolly and Guly would all miss out I think even though they are all top players who could easily get into the starting XI, but shows how strong our current squad if players of there quality could miss out. Exciting times ahead for Saints. COYR

Id miss out Schneiderlin. Plays too many balls across the park that get cut out and expose us. Back four and front too I agree, but for me Id put

Puncheon Chaplow Cork Lall

in that order, with Cork sitting in front of the back two and Chappers snarling and bighting in the middle of the park - with Punch and Lalla flying at the opposition, they wont know what hits them.. Oh, yeah, and Ricky and Billy up front (who actually sound like Eastenders characters methinks now)

This is that time of the season when the real quality shows. We need to be clinical in the next month.

Our squad is the envy of the other teams. We need to show what we are made of.

The target is not to win the league, that would be nice but its a bonus not an objective. The target is to put as many points between us and third place as possible.

Elsewhere teams are becoming erratic (e.g. West Ham) .. but Cardiff are a solid team and will be on our heels until the end of the season.

We have a squad now that should hold its own against anyone. We really need to get a thumping win at home to restore confidence but I reckon Adkins mantra of 2 points per game average will see us right.

Great that crowd kept behind the team last night. No boos at half time this week. Lee is going to be a favourite - looks good even at this early stage and such enthusiasm!

Only downside last night was a woman behind me who was obviously bored and who kept saying every three minutes she was dying from the cold. Perhaps she was trying to cheer her bloke up.

Grrr...anyone else noticed that women never put the toilet seat back up after they've used the bog?

One game doesn't make Puncheon a world beater. He ran aroudn a lot for 60 minutes but no end product. Give Guly some credit 10 goals from open play and most assists. Likewise with Spiderman, he is instrumental in the way we try and play the game.
When fit the back 5 pick themselves, in my opinion when fit we whould so Guly Spider Chappers and Adam, up front Rickie and Billy. Lee as an impact sub and plenty of other options for the bench. That midfield would give us a nice balance of goals, vision and energy. I think the squad is now a little overloaded I think Holmes and Barney need to go our on loan. Three point saturday and then looking forward to the full debut of the 'kung fu kid' against Millwall.

last night was interesting as cardiff are as good a side as we will play in this league.thought the game really swung our way with the introduction of Lee before that we where mainly just playing in front of cardiffs back four with them able then to squeeze up and press the ball.Lee came on and suddenly we had someone with a bit of pace running in behind and playing off the shoulder more this put their defence under pressure so they just dropped deeper and deeper allowing us to push on I thought we looke like our old selves in the last twenty.so with sharp and chaplow still to come in we now have a real threat, just need a few more goals from midfield and we will frighten most teams in this division.

Agree with this XI, with Deano in for Chaplow until he regains full fitness. I still think that, with everyone fit, Guly would be first choice on the right wing. Added competition for places is exactly what he needs to recapture his early season form - where Chaplow couldn't get near the team. Great strength in depth. COYR

Much better second half, unlucky not to win in the end.

Really looking good again when you think that if everyone was fit/elegible to play then Sharp, Hoover and Chaplow would have been in the team last night. Add to that Lee isn't settled in yet - it's all good.

My only criticism is the reluctance to shoot, everyone apart from Rickie and Lee don't want to take responsibility and always look to pass when presented with a half chance - go on lads hit the bloody ball!

I'm delighted the circus of the transfer window is over and Nigel can now get on with doing what he does best, which is training players and giving them a superhuman belief in their own abilities.

I always said there would be a dip at some point this season and that when it comes we shouldn't flake or panic. Most of us have withstood it, but now we go at it once again with renewed vigour and we back the team 100%. All of us. They'll pay us back ten-fold.

Puncheon done ok last night, a little bit sluggish, as can be expected with lack of game time, he does give us options but definately not in my starting XI if everybody is fit. Spider in my opinion has come on leaps and bounds now, a few long balls were under hit last night but when these come off like in the 2nd half can open up teams. We lacked balls into the box from Richardson, as soon as he puts decent ones in we create all sorts. Certainly looking forward to the 2nd half of the season, COYR!!

I've read a couple of threads where last night's game has been mentioned and I've not seen much on Lallana's performance last night.

Was I the only one who thought he looked a bit unfit? For a long period in the first half he appeared to be running at about 80% of his normal speed. I did wonder if he'd been pushed back out there a little bit too soon. A couple of moments of pure briliance in his footwork, of course, but slow all the same.

I'm not second guessing NA, just reflecting what I saw, so I acknowledge that it might just be me. I truly hope so, as we need him fit and on the pitch...

missdee says...
1:58pm Wed 1 Feb 12

I'm not sure about Hammond or Fox. Certainly wouldn't be in my starting line up. Hammond seems pretty ineffective and has been subbed an increasing amount this season, which I think reflects this. Fox is definitely the weak link in defence. His passing is really poor and crosses often overhit.

Chappers, when he is fit, is a no brainer. He works his socks off and shows more fight and passion than anyone on the pitch. In my opinion he has been the one player we have missed the most these past few months. He will make a great captain one day as he really tries to get the team going - it seems like Deano doesn't really do this successfully.

For what it's worth, my 11 would be;
Davis, Richardson, Jose, Jos, Harding, Chappers, Cork, Spiderman, Lallana, Rickie and Sharp.

Looking forward to seeing whether Punch will be the player he can be now he's got over his little twitter outburst. Should definitely improve competition on the bench.

My main surprise is how little mention there is of De Ridder.

If we get promoted then several of the current team will have to go or just have to settle for being squad players. Chaplow has a lot of fans on here, and I like his passion and energy but I do not believe he will cut it in the Premiership. His form before he got injured was as good as it has been in his two spells at SMS, but before that he struggled to make the bench. I thought Rickie might have to go if we are promoted, but he is becoming more and more intelligent in his play, like Sheringham I think that he might be able to play at the top level despite his lack of pace.

It's a really tough call. Some of the more naturally gifted players (Spiderman, Adam, perhaps) might also be the ones who are not able to step up. Keegan was a good player but not a world class player. However, he used every gift he had .... his brain (until he went into management), his fitness, his speed and his confidence. Becks is another example. Great at standing on his left foot, but can't really play football with it. Nevertheless, what a career and, in many ways, richly deserved. So, maybe those with less natural ability will prove people wrong. As you say, look at Rickie. He just gets better and that's without considering his goal scoring.

I think I saw enough positives last night to stick my neck out and say we will win automatic promotion.

Puncheon was excellent. Martin did really well at left centre back (at the beginning of the season he was poor in this position). Lee looks like a good signing to me, adds pace up front and likes to move off the shoulder of the last defender. Lallana looked a lot better than when he came back from his previous injury.

With the wide men moving inside on their natural feet and the full backs over lapping on their natural feet we will give teams something to think about all the time.

Put Billy Sharp upfront with Rickie leave Lee and Guly on the bench with Hammond and we have enough lego blocks to play any variation of 442 or 433 we like. Flexibility and interchangeability along with Hooiveld and Chaplow to come back and Connelly and Holmes in reserve.

We have all the pieces of the puzzle available to us now, we just need to slot them together and get the finished picture. Promotion!

The technical analysis on here is superb as always, but few will know that at half time last night I put on my lucky snorkel mask and mouthpiece and hey presto the second half was a whole lot different.

This does cause me to be the subject of unwelcome mirth and derision, which strikes me as astonishingly ungrateful given the results it produces for one and all to enjoy.

You all saw the uplift in crispness, pace off the shoulder, natural foot positioning and interchangeability and yet he who produced it had to struggle with a steamed up glass.

I imagine you all had or have mums who did or do one hell of a lot for you with barely a word of thanks.

This is not a moan just something a few of us have been saying for the last few weeks.

This is pasted from the Cardiff news report on last nights game.

The home side had started to settle by, but tended to over elaborate as they got forward with no one seeming to want to take responsibility for a strike at goal and they paid for their dithering as the Bluebirds went up the other end and scored.

He cannot speak the laguage, he hardly knows his team mates names. That's the only way he can communicate.
Watch him improve ! Defenders hate " Pace " and hes got it !
When the rest of the team get to know his strengths, you'll see a difference.
Billy is a great acqisition, but hasn't Lees' pace.
With Rickie all 3 will be a handful for any defence. IMHO.

Think we have become a bit Arsenalesque in our play looking to score the perfect goal. Whereas if you have a dig then who knows you may get a ricochet into the net or it may fall to a colleague.I believe that sometime the likes of Spider, Cork and latterly Adam just lack that bit of confidence when they get a sigh of goal. Nigel said a smuch in his post match interview last night.
I don't know if Sharp is pacy, but Lee certainly gave us something different last night with his pace and closing down defenders. Think he could be a great signing.Nigel now has a wonderful probelm as a manager, who the hell do you leave out. In my opinion it is time to start playing putting 2 banks of 4 away from home, and when its nil nil with 20 minutes to go unleash Lee. I read somewhere that CHEUNG (I think there's an E in it) comes from his South Korean roots.

I'm probably talking rubbish, but maybe the TADANARI bit is more CHADANARI when pronounced in English. I wasn't aware of Koreans or Japanese doing it, but Chinese people sometimes alter their Chinese name to an Anglophone name with the same beginning because it's felt that westerners can't pronounce Chinese names. However, as I know sweet nothing about South Korea, don't quote me.

Visited China once and everyone had an English name. I asked how they arrived at the nam, was it a translation? I was informed that as they sat in class for their first English lesson the teacher went around and just allocated them an English name.

Blown it?!? Are you joking?!? We are just over half way through the season and just because we have had a dip in form there are fans like you getting all negative. Get behind the team and show your support, assuming you are a Saints supporter. Billy Sharp I think will prove to be a very significant signing and I'm confident Tadanari Lee will pop up with some important goals before the end of the season. Chappers will be back soon and I'm confident his return will give everyone another lift, especially Lallana who I think has missed playing with Chappers, because the pair seem to be inseperable on and off the pitch.

Oh, yeah, and Ricky and Billy up front (who actually sound like Eastenders characters methinks now)
dont think schneiderlin and cork can play in same team as a pairing, both too negative and every ball goes sideways or backwards. we need a bit of bite in middle of park and chaplow is the kiddy to do it

Tony in Woolston ...

Enjoyed reading your post and agree with a lot of it ...

I missed the surging runs down the Wings that we used to do in League One ... and then the crosses in and goals ..

Adam and Oxy used to rip sides apart and before that Antonio ...

IMO SAINTS have done very well this Season but can further improve to totally boss the League.

My take on it is that with all the injuries etc ... the momentum that got the Team promoted and to the Top of League One has stopped...

Each game is a challenge in the Championship.

That said we have the much needed Billy Sharp and Rickie (who is hungry as ever for goals) and with Chaplow back some very good players.

Now need to gel as a Team - and with a bit of luck - and the good play that we saw in the second half with high tempo and pushing the opposition back in their own half ... We can get back to consistently Winning Ways.

We are a Top Championship Side - West Ham play some unattractive inconsistent football and there is no reason why we cannot progress to the Premiership.

You were wrong with the 2-0 Prediction to Cardiff last night.

We have plenty of attacking options which is the best form of defence, if we struggle too much put 3 at the back and go all out attack. My concern is the refereeing decisions going against us, are some of the players cute enough? I think sharp is going to make a lot of difference and interesting to see he is in every ones starting 11 and he hasn't made an appearance yet! If he starts well he will be banging them in. Just back - thought I'd add a comment. Thought it was an interesting game, but when we started the one touch stuff there were glimpses of the early seaso stuff. Puncheon looks very interested - how two faced are The Northam faithful? Lee looks a real bag of tricks he looks Jonno fast +1. Let's pass to the space for him to exploit. The diagonal pass is telegraphed and Fox often doesn't deliver and we nearly get caught. Why don't we shoot? Why don't referee assistants help the ref? Lambo's first half rugby tackle was a naied on penalty! Midfield too slow - now we have Lee release the ball quickly in thew channels.
Looking better and better for the fonal push - really big one Saturday a 6-pointer for sure!

I agree with ghk (!)

For Tebourba to say we didn't sign anyone of any significance is to completely overlook T. Lee, B. Sharp & Y. Falque.

It's hard to pick a best starting 11 as we have a lot of attacking/midfield options.

It's been well documented in the last few days that we were after a centre back (Upson/Collins) & we can still do so I believe under the loan system?

One good thing about our performances at home of late is the most welcome return of Mr. Angry. He sits somewhere behind The South Itchen Bovril Dogs of War. He reached a good 7 on the Angry-O-Meter during the Leicester game but he eclipsed this with a perfect 10 last night. He was so angry with the referee he became unintelligible and produced a series of of sweary grunts.Combine this with his broad Hampshire accent and a far as I'm concerned it's hours of entertainment. Much as I want Saints to return to the free flowing total football of first 3 months of the season my hope is that this includes a five minute spell of total incompetence and a couple of nonsensical, head scratcher from the referee and everyone is happy. Except Mr. Angry, obviously. A win win situation.

Which is why I ended up having a conversation with a Chinaman called Kevin. I have no reason to doubt what he told me becaus ewhy would anyone choose to be called Kevin!
Ha! That's priceless.

I lived in Melbourne for a while and worked with a Chinese guy called, if I remember correctly, Yiu Wei. Before he left China, a friend told him the Aussies wouldn't be able to remember that, so he ought to find a book listing European names. He must have found a book of European place names and he ended up being called 'YORK'. I guess there could be people out there whose given name is Su Wong who decided to call themselves Southampton or, heaven forbid, a person called Pa Cheung, who thought it would be exotic to rename themselves Portsfu**ingmouth!

Looking forward to Saturday & the impact of Sharp. If we play like we did in the 2nd half against Cardiff then ghk's prediction will come true (that of Saints being 2 or 3 nil up!)

Go along with the point that we need to look ahead to where we are and where we are going - so getting Premiership Class Players is the way ahead and never discount the loan market - both loaning out to improve our players to match fitness and getting the right exceptional player in.

Should be better at corners - cardiff (who ?) really put the pressure on our keeper to try and force a goal

There's a story on The News about it. I think it's probably the administrator being a bit alarmist in order to encourage any potential buyers to get their sh1t together quickly, but that's what she's saying.

My money is on Cardiff and Birmingham to win automatic promotion.
For God's sake Nigel do something now before it's too late -- there's too much of a feeling of complacency about st Mary's.
That's not me posting!
At the moment we are playing teams off the park but they have a way back, they won't 2/3 nil down!
Hi ghk. Although I am obviously not happy about you calling us "small fry", I must admit to being a slightly jealous of your strike force now you have signed Sharp! I certainly think you have enough goals in you now for automatic promotion. Good luck for the rest of the season.
That is very nice of you to say. I think tad Lee will have his say too. Only football banter bert, good luck to you guys too.

Because the relationship between them and their parent company (which is the bit that's in administration) is different to how ours was.

It doesn't matter though - there's no point deducting points if they're going out of business, is there?

The rules are if the club goes into Admin there is a points deduction. Southampton Leisure Holdings went into Admin not SFC but it was deemed that as it only owned SFC the two were inextricably linked and were effectively the same thing. CSI which owns PFC owns lots of other businesses so it's not the same circumstances.

However, I do think PFC will end up in Admin themselves sooner or later. This is much more fun than a quick death, sit back and savour this, there's a way to go yet.

But surely poopey is also inextricably linked even if the parent company owns other business. The owners have aloud them to go under and the bottom line that Irish git made clear comments on sky is that Saints benefited while together, and not when the holding company went under. This as far as I am concern and many other fans I talk to, this amounts to the same scenario surely. Hence the word linked used.

They are seperate entities so the rules are being applied properly.

However, PFC were relying on handouts from their parent company to cover their shortfall due to having so few fans and having to overpay players to go to their dung heap. Those handouts cannot be given now and unless someone buys them and injects cash they are stuffed and will end up in Admin or even straight into Liquidation themselves as a result.

Why can't we score from corners? It really gets to me that we settle for the corner, get all our hopes up and deliver SFA in terms of goals. Today at Staplewood - more shooting practice and more set plays from corners. Mind you as our defence gives so many goals away at corners...perhaps we don't have problems in training!

Would that be Pompey players and staff have been told they will not be receiving their January wages tomorrow.

The club tonight informed them the Blues have yet to receive a required validation order from the courts.

That means the club’s bank account remains frozen as a result of the winding-up order issued last month

As a result, players and staff salaries initially due last Tuesday have still to be paid.

That has sparked fears it may hamper Pompey’s ability to stage Saturday’s home match against Hull.

Or was it

Pompey will receive an allocation of 3,100 seats for the match at St Mary’s Stadium on Saturday, April 7 (1pm kick-off).

A priority ticketing scheme will be in place for the sale of seats, as detailed below.

Supporters who purchase match tickets will also be required to purchase coach travel via Lucketts Travel. As a condition of entry, travelling on an official club coach will be the only way to gain access into St Mary’s Stadium. Supporters are guaranteed coach travel once a matchday ticket has been purchased.

Match tickets will only be issued to supporters once they are on board their coach.

Nick Byrom, Pompey’s commercial director, said: “Following the successful operation here at Fratton Park in December and discussions with Hampshire Constabulary, we are working closely with our colleagues at Southampton to ensure that enjoyment and safety at the game are the priority for our visit to St Mary’s.

“We hope that this will provide a safe environment for all supporters, enabling them to enjoy the drama on the pitch without any concerns.”

Pleased with influx of attacking options, but feel we still need some back up in central defence. After the Cardiff match I felt that the team were acting as a complete unit and getting back to the high standard they set in the 2011 games. Puncheon I am still not sure about, only time will tell. In Lee we have an absolute winner (anyone remember Sydenham?) and Billy will be great support for RL. Go for it Saints...we can still get automatic promotion, if not League Champions.

3. Not because it's the Skates but because of the despicable manner in which most of their recent owners have earned their cash in the first place and because I genuinely believe football needs one of the financially irresponsible clubs to fold as a warning to others and the football authorities.

They'll bounce back one day and reclaim their rightful place amongst the likes of Crewe, Gillingham and Rochdale.

@107 I think that would actually be a really beautiful gesture. The sight of five thousand Saints fans in their colours cheering on alongside the Pompey fans would be an image that would live longer in the collective consciousness that anything that's ever happened in one of our derbies. The images would be shown all around the world, and would do a lot more to raise the profile of our plight than anything our foppish Prime Minister might say. I know it's probably too late to organise something for this Saturday, but if we can make it as far as another home game it would be terrific to see. It's worth remembering that we've got more in common than we have separating us.

Sorry, Insane, I'm totally against this.

I'd definitely do it for BHA, Aldershot or B'muff if organised and I could get there and I'd definitely do it if the recent history of PFC was in the least bit honourable.

I have two reasons why I think this should be booted in to touch NOW.
1. This particular club deserves to go under. It'll come again, don't worry about that.
2. This could split us Saints fans. I'd respect anyone's desision but I wouldn't be happy about it.

Let's put our support and money into OUR club right now.

Picked the wrong time to face the blues and a good thrashing looks to be coming your way tomorrow coming from a strong team who can't stop scoring goals for fun . Looking forward to that tv game and the brommies getting another step closer to the Premier. With both West Ham and Birmingham winning and likely Cardiff as well, puts saints 3rd and sliding.
It's all doom and gloom i'm afraid...if i could stop the rot i would but it's gone your side's promotional chances...but don't lose hope there's always next season.
Pompey look as though they are going on a very long vacation but someday will return. South coast football rivalry will be missed and Portsmouth will be looking like a ghost town.
Birmingham 3-0 easy win.
Pompey if the players play? will win 2-0
Lovely and warm here in Cebu!

Next concern is ...

Will there be snow in Birmingham and will the game be called off..

I can remember going to Charlton Away and when 100 yards from the Ground being told the game was not going to be played.

Everyone played the blame game ... and it was out the Supporters that were short changed ...

Want to get the game played at the weekend and get the 3 points ..

Birmingham 0 Saints 3

Do not want to miss games and start the slide down the table and into the playoffs

If they were following this last night, I hope they've got a good handle on the Saintly sense of humour ;-)

My thoughts on the idea of Saints fans going down to Fratton Park to show support to Pompey, well I think going down there is a good idea, would love to have one last look before they are closed down.
Nope, don't remember them showing us any support, let the fcukers go under and good riddens

Picked the wrong time to come on here!

Shouldn't you be more concerned with your own club's sorry plight?

A debate over whether we finish 1st or 2nd to get in to the Premier League compared with oblivion..... hmmmm, wonder which one I'd choose!

Keep posting if you like, but you are making yourself a figure of fun & derision.

Nice & warm here in NZ too by the way.

Did you boo your team again last night like you did against leicester???
At least we take more than 80 fans to away games my fishy friend, I hope your Club survives so I can carry on laughing for the next 40 years.
You take more than 80 fans to away games good on yer..we took 9,000 to wimbledon on a tuesday night for a league game, have you ever done that my poney loving friend???
Dear half empty cup, i had a pony and trap earlier and am currently enjoying social intercourse with a lovely lady from southsea who supports the blue few, that does not make me like you, in fact quite the opposite. FOP COYR.
Make sure you use protection.
Thanks for your concern, i do have a wetsuit, face-mask, snorkel and O2 tanks for depth work.
You're so right Seedy, I have had a few Minging Skates over the past 12 months, and I always take protection. I find a paper bag lessens the strain on the eyes if you haven't got it bent over.

Like your style Gossie ..

Pompey will turn up wrapped in cotton wool in at St Marys' ... you have that imbecile with the bell ..

You have the same predictable chants ..........

and the reality is they are just small fry.

Their squad is stretched to wafer thin and it is their critical weakness ..

All they need is lots of yellows or a Red Card and they are in trouble with the few players they have available ....

If lawrence kicks off and winds up the Saints Supporters to the extreme ....

There will more than likely be a chant ..

We know where you live ...
We know where you live ive ..
Liam Lawrance ...
We know where you live ...

I would recommend that these characters like david nugent and liam lawrence "wind their necks in " and stop their antics and then blubbing when Saints Fans react ..

WE ARE DOMINANT IN THE SOUTH.

WE ARE THE MIGHTY SOUTHAMPTON.

NUMBER 1 - TOP DOGS !!

Here we go again, this could be a real disastrious day for the saints but a winning one for one of the stronger favourites for promotion Birmingham City. West Ham and Cardiff should stay in the top three until the end of the season. Sadly Southampton will be struggling to stay in the play offs and will have to wait for another season.

It's smashing weather here today..great to relax and have a beer. I hear it's minus 6c in southampton!

You are a lucky B! Also, annoyingly you quite possibly are right, but the worse thing that could happen is that we go third, which would be very disappointing, but considering the recent blip in form, hardly surprising. What is surprising is that we were not overhauled earlier. This League is really competitive now and our methods have been worked out by the rest, hopefully we have a few more cards up our sleeves and are not out of the hunt yet. Time will tell. Now if Hull were to have lost today that would have been a good thing, sadly the game is off, Fratton Park may have seen it's last game, I hope not.
