Portsmouth FC fans must travel in police "bubble" for Saints game

Rickie Lambert celebrates scoring for Saints at Fratton Park in December Rickie Lambert celebrates scoring for Saints at Fratton Park in December

Pompey fans visiting St Mary’s in April will have to use the same controversial “bubble” travel arrangements as Saints fans did for the first of this season’s derby matches.

The Fratton Park club has announced ticket details for the return league fixture on April 7, saying fans will have to buy coach travel as well.

In December, Saints fans were forced to travel to the home of their bitter rivals in a special police-escorted convoy of coaches down the M27, as the authorities sought to avoid trouble between opposing supporters.

Despite protests from some fans that the move infringed their rights to make their own way to the game, police hailed the operation as a success, with just one person being arrested at Fratton Park, on allegations of a fireworks offence.

Pompey fans have previously suggested they would try to challenge the legality of imposing a bubble on them for the St Mary’s match.

But Nick Byrom, Portsmouth FC’s commercial director, said the club has decided it is the best option to make sure the day passes off without incident.

He said: “Following the successful operation here at Fratton Park in December and discussions with Hampshire Constabulary, we are working closely with our colleagues at Southampton to ensure that enjoyment and safety at the game are the priority for our visit to St Mary’s.

“We hope that this will provide a safe environment for all supporters, enabling them to enjoy the drama on the pitch without any concerns.”

Pompey will start selling its 3,100 seats to season ticket holders from Monday, a full two months before the derby game.

The club is currently facing a winding up petition from HM Revenue and Customs over £1.6m of unpaid tax.

It will appear at the Royal Courts of Justice in London to answer the petition on February 20.

Players and staff were not paid last month, as the club's bank accounts have been frozen because of the action by the taxman.

Administrators are trying to find a buyer for the Fratton Park outfit because its owners, Convers Sports Initiatives, went into administration in November.

Too true Rob, I am 100 per cent certain that when we were in trouble a few years ago how those dirty Skates gloated, in fact I remember the Echo threads were jammed packed with them gloating, what goes around comes around.

I travelled in the bubble to Skateland in December, when I first read about it, I objected, however I must admit that it worked really well, the Skates lined the streets to welcome us to their city, it resembled the a scene from the film The Deliverance, it was so funny.

It's going to take a lot of thinking about. When we travelled down there they had roads shut off and a large area around the stadium for the parking needed for the transport, (some of it was that old not sure what you would call it. )
At our place it will be very difficult to do this so i think the best thing to do would be to beam the game by tv down to their ground so they can stay down there and keep the filth out of our city.

I only have two questions about this police tactic:
1. When PFC close down will all of the skates who buy season tickets at SMS be 'bubbled' in and out for each game.
2. Will they use 4 or 5 cars to 'bubble' their fans down for the derby match?

Football has done a good job of destroying itself through greed & shortsightedness, but at least Saints are striving to be a well run club, living within their means & not paying what they can't afford, either in transfer fees or wages.

We're not destroying anything. In fact, there's an idea being floated on The News right now that Saints fans should go to the Pompey game on Saturday in their colours to show their support and give them a bit of working capital so the poor back room staff on minimum wage could get paid. Having witnessed the scenes at both Portsmouth and Southampton when the teams met before 'the bubble' was introduced, I consider it to be an excellent and efficient way of reducing trouble.

With each set of yobs trying to cause more trouble than the other, I would be prepared for anything to prevent anything happening here like what has just happened in Egypt.

OSPREYSAINT says...

One thing I have been considering about the situation, when we were in the similar situation it appeared to some of us that outside agencies were trying to destroy our club, I think it was the reaction from the supporters that nipped that in the bud, there was great anger against the people concerned and we were responsible for removing the cancer that was eating away, I think that this was also the reason that we were saved by people that recognised our support and desires and thought we were worth rescuing. Now I see a deja vu situation, however all I see from Skate posters is anger against us and no attempt to deal with the culprits who are destroying their once proud soccer club. There seems to be no concerted attempt to fight for the cause, no urgency in reaching a solution, just a peevish wait and see attitude. I, among many others were in constant contact with the Football League fighting our cause. I would like to think we had some small input into the outcome. If PFC is to survive they need to be doing more direct action.

IMO the tragic events in Egypt happened at a football match, the whole country is was turmoil before this, therefore I think football was used by the idiots as an excuse.

As for the bubble, I went down there, it worked really well TBH, however I'm interested to see the route in the return game, I don't think it will be as simple.

don't want to see any club go out of business even that one. Yet this time i do not see anyone coming to their rescue.
I don't think they can go into admin because they have C.V.A's outstanding, from last time.
I think it is a pay up or bust situation.
It may in reality be the last local derby has been played.

As for the Pompey saga. We were very lucky to get such an ethical regime behind Southampton FC.

Southampton has won every family club award there is and is a good sporting invironment.
