Adkins satisfied with a point

Nigel Adkins Nigel Adkins

NIGEL Adkins was satisfied with a point at Birmingham, but insisted his side didn’t penetrate enough.

Saints left a snow-covered St Andrew’s after fighting out a well-earned 0-0 draw that maintained their grip on second place in the Championship.

Adkins was happy enough with the result and performance, although he said his side didn’t do enough in front of goal.

“First ten minutes I thought they started well, then we changed our shape and got a hold of the game,” he said.

“We’ve passed the ball about and were totally in the ascendancy with it, although we didn’t penetrate enough and that was the big thing.

“We’ve kept the ball well but we haven’t penetrated on a difficult surface it’s fair to say.

“As the second half has gone on it was difficult for the players. Give them a little bit of credit for being out there playing.

“But the ball wasn’t running conducively and we didn’t launch it sufficiently enough to test their goalkeeper.”

Adkins also believed Danny Fox was wrongly dismissed for two bookings.

“Should it be a sending off? No,” said the Saints boss. “It’s two horrendous decisions for me.”

A good point and Saints adapted better to the dreadful conditions than Brum. Fox's first yellow was arguably not even a foul - he played the ball cleanly and couldn't help but slide into the opponent who inevitably made a meal of it to get the free kick. The second yellow was a clear push on the opponent but it's something you see happening all the time (sadly) in football and it wasn't in a particularly dangerous position. (Even the Brummie supporting commentator on Sky thought the second yellow was wrong.)

Dowd is a pratt - I don't understand why referees feel obliged to dish out yellow cards. West Ham's second goal today was a travesty - their forward clattered into the Millwall goalkeeper and left him lying flat on the ground while another forward banged the ball into an empty net. That ref needs to go to Specsavers!

A solid performance by Saints who did well to pass the ball so well on the snow. A game that perhaps wouldn't have been played if it weren't on TV. At least nobody broke a leg.

A good performance by the lads, I think Dowd was watching another game, Fox 1st yellow was the great tackle, got the ball 1st, studs to the side, conditions made him fellow through, he couldn't, 2nd yellow, my Mrs gives me haerder love pats, the geezer was already falling.

We're 2nd in the league, for all negative people 2nd means promotion, who cares if WHU are above us today, we are the best side in this league by a country mile.

Agree with you completely about the first tackle. It was ball first and yes, his momentum kept him going.
Hopefully, we will pick up six points in the next two games and begin a tear.

My first thought about today's game was that it should never have been played in those conditions, but having come away with a point, I am glad that it did...
I am also glad that in the circumstances we got away without anything more than a sending off...and that shouldn't have happened either!!
Fox slipped for the first foul and had both feet on the ground so a harsh yellow card...in the second incident he barely touched the other guy who then slipped over, so again a harsh yellow card...all in all a very harsh red!
Still, great to see that Cardiff also slipped up in a big way today, so we are still second and in a great position with an improved squad and improving form too.
On balance, I'm please with today's outcome and at least no one got injured from what I could see...

yes fox should not have been sent off but he should not have given the ref the option he is crap. he can not pass to a saints player he gets caught on the ball he does not get down the line to over lap he tries to many cross field balls and most of our goals we concede comes from him being caught on the out side. Harding is by far a better player in the left back poss he does all that i have mentioned except getting caught by letting players passed him easily.

Totally agree.

I was rubbish at tackling, a total coward but THAT was the kind of tackle I would show my sons to encourage them to do the same.

Peter Beagrie was spot on in his Sky assessment. Fox had his eye on the ball, his foot wasn't raised and he won the ball cleanly. Had he backed out or lead with his toe (that is, without leading with his studs) he could have been injured.

The negativity is part coping mechanism (talk it down so if we blow it, we expected no less) and part growing pains (we don't know how to demand more without sounding ungrateful). Exactly what I was thinking! The team might have the winning mentality but to some of us fans it comes a bit harder. Years of telling your 'big club' (Arsenal, Manure, Chelsea. etc.) mates that you support Saints and know what you are talking about as far as football goes then trying to give a realistic assessment of your team's non-existent prospects of winning anything does leave you sort of used to a stoic negativity. Maybe it's in the blood. Maybe that's why some of us became Saints fans in the first place (not me I hasten to add). Anyway I can see that negativity/pessimism is a harder habit to break for some than others. All I can say is that there is nothing of any real importance to be negative about nowadays. We have a club on the up and the future is truly bright. Get used to it. Get on board the bus while Nigel and the players row (?) us to glory! Leave those negative thoughts behind. It must be incredible satisfying to be Dave! I watched it on telly and it was the longest match i had to watch. How it was a sending off was beyond me It just wasn't that sort of match. It was played in a very amicable way. The only element that i thought was cynical was when guly was taken out at the end and as Sky put it. The Birmingham player "took one for the team"

Agree these are great times to be a saints supporter. I can remember, like many supporting the saints to FA cup, promotion, and second place in top flight. Batsieboy ... agree that League is priority... but we have got numbers in the squad including plenty of Striking Options to go and get the WIN.

(not like wafer thin squad sad old pompey who can't get a red card cos they will run out of players .... )

Nigel must have the pencilled in names for Burnley ....

Don't think it will do the fringe players any harm to get some much needed match practice ..

Lookin' forward to Tuesday Night as well as Burnley and West Ham ..

Look on the positive, Birminham have been flying and are by far the inform team in the league. We have been struggling big time and on current form in the bottom half. We go and put in a resolute performance and get a great point. Get points grinning away games start winning our home games again and we'll be fine.
The sending off of Fox was ludicrous but no great shakes as he will miss the Millwall reply and probably wouldn't have played anyway.

Linesman - you're hit the nail on the head ...

We've got great Striking Options ... now we need to give them good service and great penetration .. that allows the Striker that extra second to pick his shot and get the goals ..

We need to get our shooting boots on and test the keeper ..

That said being wasteful and shooting into the stand or into the corner flag is not the answer ...

The Team seem to be improving and getting better and better -just need the goals and the 3 Points ..

Confidence is returning and looking forward to our next WIN.

Well, I am satisfed with one point at this moment cos I though we would never really have to score goals cos of weather though one or two did get a target but did not trouble the Brummie's goalie.

Brummies did not get a goal despite many attempts than Saints though one tried to get a shot at goal though Davies manage to turn the ball away.

I reckons both side were satisfied with a draw and both managers agreed that the weather makes them impossible to play well enough to get at goal.

The match should have called off but the officials decided otherwise.

As for Fox's sending off, I thought that was harsh but I think the FA will reject any appeals from Atkins and go ahead with one match ban which will be against Millwall on Tuesday.

There is only four points from West Ham on top spot and two points from Cardiff. We play Burnley on Saturday weather permitting. West Ham plays Peterborough away (likely to win that one). But we play West Ham away the next Tuesday which will be a key match for us!

I can speak for four more family season ticket holders - we're all in.

On the positive front too, we need to bear in mind that the draws against Cardiff and Brum halted their winning runs. These matches were not just about gaining points but inflicting point losses.

Watching on TV yesterday, our fans dominated the audio. They were fantastic in volume and numbers - especially since the match was televised and the bad wather was forecast. Must say to them - thanks, appreciated, well done.

We have had three months of disruption to our side averaging 6 players out a game. Yes it has effected us because the side has been continually changed because of that. No one in this Championship has had such a run of injuries for this length of time. Yes we have only won 2 out of 10 and guess what we are still second.
Guess what our players are coming back and we have strengthened.
To the knockers and those from other clubs. write us off at your peril.
We have 2 difficult games in West Ham and Burnley.
After that Hull is our most difficult game, followed by Borough and Blackpool away from home and Reading at home.
Most teams already have tougher run ins than us.
I expect Leicester to get to the play offs and upset a few along the way.
Cardiff and Birmingham will battle all the way. Whilst West Ham are moving through easier fixtures on paper, they still have all these teams to face. As do others.
Keep our heads and keep playng the way we did 2nd half Cardiff and against Brum, the goals will come. Our destiny is in our hands.

I watched the game on telly as i am back in Africa now, I have to say I thought the team looked to have more bight and balance than in recent weeks as first choice players become available.
Fonte at Center back makes a huge difference and when Hoover is back we will again be very solid , that said Martin seems to be improving and plays better with fonte than with hoover. I thought Schneiderlin gave the ball away yesterday, too often and too cheaply and Cork and him got in each others way, not sure if it was the conditions , but the balance in the middle is not quite right. The signings upfront and return from suspension for lambert gives us some very exciting choices as well as making Guly available in midfield, which effectively gives us three attacking midfield options with AL and JP, Guly looked up for it in the short time he had on the pitch. I was in the UK for the Leicester game and since then it seems we have started to get our form back, hardly surprising when we consider the changes in personnel !! Exciting times 17 games left 30 points required........ Whatever happens at WHU won't determine or decide our season, I have confidence that NA and the core of the squad will perform under pressure as they did at the tail end of last year when we came from a weaker position and were pushed all the way to second place, we have the experience and are well equipped , keep the faith COYR

It's not the games played this year that has done the damage but the Doncaster away, x2 Bristol City and Brighton away. Leicester home with the injuries can be forgiven, however quicker signings may or may not of helped, but that is now in the past. Puncheon is almost like a new signing, Lee looks promising but with tlc and sharp fingers crossed should be the difference. With the loan window open soon we may get another defender in but more importantly shift some out. This is a tough tight league, at the moment the performances are more important than results to regain confidence. But we put a good shift in 1st 4 months of the season and we remain in a good position. Let the irons drag us along and take the pressure then we can come up along side and drive on for league title and promotion!

Left Birmingham this morning and got back no probes. Terrible conditions, but what a gutsy performance from the lads, and some great saves from Super Super Kelv. I agree that Connely was again a bit anonomous. Guly looked And Sharp both looked good when they came on. Agree not one for Tadanari to make his debut in. Maybe this would have been the kind of game Barney would have been more suited to?

Looking forward to a bit if cup action. They new signings could do with a bit more time and action to gel.

I could hear you loud and clear here in Strasbourg and that was with the windows shut :)
Well said the pair of you. Our away support especially in the current financial climate, is something to be proud of.

It was the same for both sides. The conditions cannot be blamed for the fact that Davies had saves to make, and their keeper did not.
Linesman are you a skate or just a miserable fool?
Neither, but you are a moron if you cannot see the truth in what I wrote. Were the conditions better for Birmingham than they were for Southampton? Of course not. Did Davies have to make more saves than their keeper? Yes he did. In fact, I cannot recall their keeper having to make any saves at all. As Red Army1 @ 10:38 agrees with my comment, do you consider him to be 'a skate or just a miserable fool' as well?
My comment is not about this post in isolation, it is everything you spout.

Got a point and which was great Zigic big loss to them and lucky for us. So without creating anything we got a 0-0. Yes it was a good point although fear that if they had scored we woud not have got anything at all as we offered noting in the final third. Hope that Sharp and Lee will change this. PS thought Martin had excellent game.

What I said was neither negative nor positive, purely and simply, a fact as I saw it in that the conditions were as bad for Birmingham as they were for Southampton. That is not negative nor is it positive, it is a fact.

If you watch a replay of the match, you will see that Birmingham's keeper did not have a shot on target to save, but Davies did. That is not being negative, it is stating the truth.

I was watching Saints when they were in Div3 South, with Ephgrave in goal and Bill Rochford, an FA Cup winner, was at left back.

When you can match that time-scale, you will have something to shout about, but I will no longer be around.

Harding is by far a better player in the left back poss he does all that i have mentioned except getting caught by letting players passed him easily.

If you care to read what I just said before, that last diatribe is irrelevant. Here are more facts: We had more possesion, we kept a clean sheet, we got a valuable draw away against a team unbeaten at home and top of the form table, the conditions were not suited to a team like us who play a passing game, they do suit a hard team with a giant striker. Why do you never mention any of the positive "facts"? Because you are either a skate or the most miserable negative saint.

So you are a saint? So here is your chance to show your colours. What is your overall summary of the state of our club, and our team right now? We have a fantastic manager who supported by the chairman brings in quality players one after another. It is our money they owe - well maybe not yours kiwi Dan but you what I mean. What got me about last time was we (the taxpayers) wrote off what they owed then they splashed out on some half decent players like Kitson for at least a £mil. Basically their fans were laughing - they had 3 or 4 years watching their small time club filled with international players and winning a cup. And the penalty? To be back to the position they belong anyway, where they started before they stole a load of money. Every team may as well do that if that is the only consequence. Now they are here again - this time they need to rot for the sake of justice and to set an example for the rest of the league that you can't just live the high life at the expense of everyone else.

Why?

So that you can throw another tantrum if I should say something that you don't like or that you disapprove of?

I remember when Charlie Wayman was centreforward, and Saints were certs for promotion to the old Div 1 because they had, I think it was, a 6 or 8 point lead at the top of the table, and not too many matches left.

Charlie had a 'mysterious injury' and Saints were not promoted, and Charlie sold the two cafes he owned in Southampton and was transferred to PNE.

Look - I was in the terraces and had a thoroughly good day out.

When was a bit (lot) of snow going to ruin it for me ...

For a 0-0 - it was a good game and although I recorded it on Sky TV - it was a lot lot better on the Terraces.

West Ham is gonna be immense and I am confident that we will do there and WIN. (low scoring game)

As posted before the Crowd were immense and the Players were very good.

Super ... Super Kelv did a great interview when he said we came to WIN.

That's what this side is all about ... we SMASHED Birmingham at St Mary's - so why not go up there and do it again.... ?

I did agree with Linesman yesterday that we could have got more shots off and tested their keeper - but I then re watched the game on Sky and saw the lads did crack in some shots but they were blocked by Birmingham.

With the lads coming back from injuries - we have a good side and Billy Sharp looks useful - he was pretty close to getting a goal ...

We are in the race and we are in the mix for Automatic Promotion. The crowd do make a big difference to the Players and Together we can do this.

Getting ahead of myself - looking forward to end of Season Celebrations (on the p.....) and playing Premiership Football next Season. If Norwich can do this - then why can't we ???

Looking back to where we were .. that 4-0 defeat to Swindon in the JPT last Season and see how far we have come
It's been great - long may it continue !!!

From the court explanation.. There are three possible results: Pay the debt, sell the club or wind up. 20th Feb nuff said!!
You won't be coming to Fratton in the show of solidarity then? :)
I won't.

As said before, I'd do it for any South coast club (Skates included) if I didn't genuinely believe it would be good for football if The Skates go under. (Don't worry, they'll return one day.)

btw, at the w/e I had another fundraising idea: Pin the tail on the donkey.

Dave Kitson could be let loose in a field. Punters could pay to throw spears onto which had been attached horse hair to represent tails.

If your spear hits Kitson, you get your money back.

If he get a direct hit on his harris, you win, say, £100. The rest of the profits would go to the 'Save the Skates' fund.

I haven't heard much from you for the year in which we have been brilliant and now we have a sticky spell you are back with your negative rhetoric. I hope for your sake you are just a sad skate rather than an incredibly miserable sad saint.
If you could be bothered to look, you would see that I was responding to a post made by David Crook. If he had not made that comment, I would not have posted what I did. When you can match that time-scale, you will have something to shout about, but I will no longer be around.
ok so you are the bloke who sat behind me at the dell moaning about Moran "apart from the 3 goals he scored today Moran's done nothing". A bit of me wishes were a skate.

If you care to read what I just said before, that last diatribe is irrelevant. However if you want me to pick on that I will, it is a fact but it is another deliberately isolated fact designed obviously at taking the most negative slant.

Here is mine - We are a brillaintly run club, with great fans, being treated to some excellent free flowing football from a team that want to be here. We have a fantastic manager who supported by the chairman brings in quality players one after another. We have had a wobble mostly due to injuries but we are still in a promotion position in our first year back at this level. It is a joy to support SFC in the last two years and the future is bright.

Go on see if you can be honest.
So you want to keep changing the subject, to prove what?

This sequence started because David Crook said that the game should not have been played because of the conditions.

In response, I stated that it was as bad for Birmingham as it was for Saints and it could not be why their keeper had no shots to save but Davies had.

RedArmy1 @10:38 agreed with me.

By making that comment, you decide to behave like a naughty schoolboy and start calling me names, but I note that you have not had a pop at RedArmy1 for agreeing with me.

As you have got no joy, and discover that I was going to the Dell long before you were thought of, you now want me to give my opinion on various aspects of the club.

We thought that the club was well run then.

Nothing to do with the thread, but I wrote to the FL regarding Poopey, and this is their reply

Dear Graham,

Many thanks for your email the points of which have been noted. The Football League is actively looking into the situation to obtain the information we need. We need to ensure that the decision is the right one and one that is able to withstand scrutiny therefore only when we have this information will we be able to make a decision with regards to a points deduction.

The regulations that were in place when Southampton FC was deducted 10 points are different to those that are in place now. The current regulation relating to this can be found at 12.3 of our regulations available on the website here: http://www.football-

if you think about it, we have actually been playing for the last month or two with a second string side. Over the next week or two we will see Chaplow, Sharpe, Fonte, Ricky (after 3 games out), Puncheon, Joose, Tad, and even Lalla has been off his game.

8 first team players that would walk into any other Championship side coming back. Imagine what +ve effect that will have in the dressing room. Im even getting excited typing this post!

So the blip has coincided with an almost complete team line-up change. Think about looking around the dressing room versus Burnley and how much that will boost the lads.

Positivety - thats what you need!

Not Victor Meldrew, but when people try to twist what I write, into something entirely different, then I think that I am justified in defending myself and point out their mistake.

If, like Balders76, you think that the conditions at St Andrews were severe enough to have the game called off, you are entitled to that opinion.

The opinion of those that count, ie the referee and officials, thought that it was OK, so the game went ahead and the conditions were the same for both sides.

A statement of fact, not a moan. Not a complaint. Not an excuse.

My observation on which keeper had shots to save and which one did not is, as far as I could see, a fact. Not a complaint. Not an excuse. Not a whinge. Not a moan. Just the game as I saw it.

Read your posts again - go back as far as you like. I agree that you made a statement of truth, no need for you to keep stating that as some irrelevant defence. The point is the truths you select to state, each one is carefully chosen to put across the most negative slant.

I am a supporter, like you claim to be. I say what I see, like you claim to do - however I believe we should support and it is better to waver on the side of positivity (that does not mean naivety) - fortunately at the moment it is easy to be positive because things are going so well, even if this season we fail to go up.

The subject has always been your negativity as far as I am concerned. You can deviate as you wish, however if you want to claim I must stick to the topic then to avoid being a hypocrite you should stop banging on about the 1960's

But OK it makes a bit more sense why you are such a Victor Meldrew. You have been deeply affected, sorry I should have more sympathy. I have only been supporting for 30 years and even I have been tarnished. I now see what a lifetime must do to people.

When you can match that time-scale, you will have something to shout about, but I will no longer be around.
ok so you are the bloke who sat behind me at the dell moaning about Moran "apart from the 3 goals he scored today Moran's done nothing". A bit of me wishes were a skate. If you care to read what I just said before, that last diatribe is irrelevant. However if you want me to pick on that I will, it is a fact but it is another deliberately isolated fact designed obviously at taking the most negative slant.
We thought that the club was well run then.

Allow me to help. It is not too late. When you are being negative and moaning at the tiny bits that are not perfect I will be here to point out all the positives. It is not too late to change your spots. If you want to, do you?
I wonder what support you were giving to Pardew when he was manager.

Were you loud in your criticism of those who appeared to be doing their best to undermine his position?

I can assure you, I was not one of his critics, in fact I saw him for what he was, an excellent manager with a good CV, which has been borne out by the way that he has turned Newcastle United around.

I wonder what comments you made, at the time, and whether they were positive or negative.
