Key man Chaplow set for comeback

Richard Chaplow Richard Chaplow

Richard Chaplow will return to first-team action for Saints this week.

The midfielder has recovered from a knee injury that initially forced him out of action in late November.

Manager Nigel Adkins revealed after the 0-0 draw at Birmingham that Chaplow is available for selection again.

And the 27-year-old will make his comeback in tomorrow’s FA Cup fourth round replay against Millwall.

“Richard Chaplow will start the game,” confirmed Adkins, who will also hand a first start to striker Japanese international striker Tadanari Lee.

Chaplow, who has been sidelined for the last 13 games, is the latest in a long line of key men to return for Saints.

The team has been without a number of significant players through either injury or suspension in the last few weeks.

But the squad once again has a very healthy look about it.

With Saints remaining well-placed in second position after the stalemate at St Andrew’s, Adkins believes the club is in good shape for the remainder of the season.

“I look at the group of players we’ve got and we’re strong,” he said.

“We’ve got good competition for places and we can deal with the injuries and suspensions that are going to come along.

“We’re playing every three days, that’s what it is now.

“The last half a season is condensed in such a short period of time, and you’re going to need that rotation of the squad of the players to deal with it all.

“I believe we’ve got goals, although we haven’t had a shot sufficiently (against Birmingham), we haven’t scored a goal.

“But there’s goals in the team and we’ve got strength in depth to go and do that.

“Maybe we didn’t play the conditions sufficiently enough in respect of getting that ball forward a lot quicker.”

Great news Chappers back.
Lee to get a run out.
reference Birmingham game. I don't think anyone can blane anything other than the weather. Okay we were shot shy and Birmingham forced our keeper to two saves wow, at times we played better football than many championship sides on a good day. In conditions that were awful. We got a hard won point which I was certainly happy with.
A point was always going to be a good result.

Yes, but if he'd come back a couple of weeks ago and then got injured again, we'd all be saying 'why was he rushed back?'

So, personally, assuming he isn't being rushed back, I welcome the care taken by the backroom staff and am delighted he's now back.

Go get 'em, Chappers!

Good point re the hair. Think of all the greatest footballers ever - Zinedine Zidane, Alfredo de Stefano, Bobby Charlton, Gianluca Vialli etc - and it's no coincidence all were follically challenged. My theory is that Chappers' bald head acts as a solar energy panel.

There are far too many nancy players with fancy hair nowadays. Any coincidence that Bale with his well oiled quiff never scores with a header?

I think it's an internet thing. People just love logging on to the internet and moaning about stuff. I imagine every club in the land has similar posters. Lord knows what they did before computers came along - maybe they kicked their dogs or something? If so, I suppose we should just accept the relentless negativity from a certain percentage of the population as the unfortunate price of this advance in animal welfare standards.

Great news!

It shows the usefulness of these cup games and replays which put no strain on the main team but provide a great opportunity for the manager.

Chappers can be given a run out tomorrow and regain match fitness. Lee can continue to adapt to the English game. Bart gets essential match time incase Kelv gets injured/suspended. The youth get a run out keeping the route to the first team open for them. Fox uses up his suspension. The list is endless - we should draw all cup matches!

What a great observation!

I have a beautifully carved and quite large laughing Buddha at home which was given to me in China - amazing artistry where the concentric circles in the wood radiate from both his belly button and his chin.

Of course these Buddhas are very lucky - although obtuse at times. It's said that a man once shouted to the Buddha on the far side of the river and asked "How do I get to the other side?" The Buddha said "You are on the other side!"

Anyhow, now you've reminded me his big fat belly will be rubbed every match day.

Wot leave guly out, 11 goals this season, none from the pen spot, has he scored more goals then Ricky from open play? What we need in the team at mo are goal scorers , so with 11 goals IMO he should be in the starting 11 ! There must be a stato on this site, how many pens has Ricky scored this season , or set plays. Nothing against Ricky he,s our main threat a goal scorer. Coyr. Fop

Does he get a one- or two-match ban?

If it's one, then what's the point? He'll sit out tomorrow. If two, then ..... well, maybe. But we have the cover and knowing the way the FA works, if we appealed, they'd just increase the punishment to 3 matches.

That said, it's hard to work out how the hell the ref ever sent him off.

I agree on Cork and Lala but Kev and Bart are as good as you get in this division. It will be good to have Chappers back but he,ll have to work hard for his place. His asset is his agression so it will pump them all up even if he is on the bench.

I think it is time we looked at the contribution of the strikers. Quite simply, it's not good enough. If Lambert worked as hard ad he should he would score many mor or create more chances for others. Connoly is just not up to it any more. The sooner we get Sharp and Lee up to speed the better. Chappers return is welcome, but Hammond is also struggling as well. Fox didn't deserve either card, but he was naive to even put a hand on anyone.

I wish football would go back to its original format. 1 team in the European cup, 4 in the eufa cup 1 in cup winners cup.
Th F.A. cup was as important as the league when Saints won it in 76. Now it is totally devalued
Though agreed Saints need to give some of their other players a good work out.
Then again I am old fashioned enough to believe the top three teams should be promoted. how someone finishing 6th can go up over someone finishing 3rd in the league defies all logic.
The same as once the European cup was the cup of champions now it is the cup of also rans and debt ridden.
Teams in European comp lasdrrdt year racked up 1.6b debt

When Sharp signed, I thought great, available for Millwall replay as he didn't play for Donny in their home 3rd Round defeat to Notts County. Then I remembered, you have to be signed in time to be eligible for the original tie. Sharp signed on the Monday after Millwall and is not eligible. Equally Andy Keogh is not available for Millwall. Confirmed now on BBC match preview. Wish I was wrong, but sadly not. Lambert & Sharp to start against Burnley (we hope!)

Then I remembered, you have to be signed in time to be eligible for the original tie. Sharp signed on the Monday after Millwall and is not eligible. Equally Andy Keogh is not available for Millwall. Confirmed now on BBC match preview. Wish I was wrong, but sadly not. Lambert & Sharp to start against Burnley (we hope!)
thanks for that invicta, that makes sense.lets unleash our japanese ninja on millwall now with chappers ready the team selection for tomorrow will be very interesting with everybody now pushing for a starting role.a mix of youth and experience i expect, i'll be there anyway.COYR.

Looking forward to the game.. no threads booked on any feed sites yet. I hope the pitch is okay.. turf looked to be lifting in places last time. Dying to see ball getting to the strikers in and around the box how it gets there or who gets it there doesn't matter. It could be Connors and Lee on the Hunt?

James Ward-Prowse has got to fancy his chances of starting tomorrow and furthering his caeer at Saints , Ben Reeves is another who is knocking on door of the first team.
Proving that our youth policy is real, no need to go overboard in buying when we have some absolute diamonds coming through.

Every pundit who is actually a former player has stated neither "tackle" deserved a card!
Welcome back Chappers - we've missed you.
COYMS - fop
Does he get a one- or two-match ban?

If it's one, then what's the point? He'll sit out tomorrow. If two, then ..... well, maybe. But we have the cover and knowing the way the FA works, if we appealed, they'd just increase the punishment to 3 matches.

That said, it's hard to work out how the hell the ref ever sent him off.
The Brum player Burke got him sent off, that is along with the assistant linesman.
He even had the cheek to say in the papers " the first challenge was a red card "!.
He knew when he went down that Fox would walk.
Why let the assistants run the game and make decisions like that guy did in the second half at Brum?.
The Cardiff home game, when the Ref came from Yorkshire, you know just down the road, the main man ignored his assistants. In fact they were half asleep through the game.
Makes me mad, imagine how the Players and NA think?.

The highlights shown on the Saints web sight is a bunch of BS. Even in those **** conditions we were passing the ball about in triangles, and beating them to everything. I thought Puncheon played well and really got involved. The truth is there were signs that the team is getting moving again, passing the ball to feet, getting out of tight spots, and keeping possession. Even though brum had a couple of worthy efforts that were easily dealt with it, it was Saints who created the best scoring chance when the ball came right across the box, Sharp cuts it back and the defender just gets a touch before he could get his shot off. We would have won the game and their keeper would still not have had a shot to save. I really believe we are going up, but i would hope that we will do it playing the way that will set us up to compete in the premiership. Some of what I saw on that miserable day in Birmingham, but was not shown in the highlights leads me to believe we may well be getting back on track.

no they are sponsored by Butlins because both or their seasons are finished by September.
The last I read is: they have a winding up order on the 27 Feb 2012 if they don't get anything sorted. but knowing Pompey they will get away with it. the FA should put a stop to this, time and time again they for some reason or other they escape the points deduction, it makes a mookery of the teams that were punished for the exact same reason, 'Come on FA, get Pompey out of your **** and get them sorted'
