Nigel Adkins happy with Southampton's point at West Ham United

Nigel Adkins on the touchline with Sam Allardyce in the foreground Nigel Adkins on the touchline with Sam Allardyce in the foreground

NIGEL Adkins admitted he felt Saints could have got three points after playing for so long against ten men at West Ham but was content with a draw.

Saints were under massive pressure at the start of the game and eventually fell behind from the penalty spot but, with Matt Taylor sent off in the melee that followed the award of the spot kick, Adkins’ men had a chance to overtake the Hammers and leapfrog them into first place.

However, after taking until 75 minutes to bag an equaliser, Adkins was left to reflect that four points against West Ham over the season was a good haul.

He said: “There were some interesting decisions for the officials to make and the linesman has backed the referee up as well and I think the linesman’s given the first penalty.

“In the cold light of day we’ve gone 1-0 down from a penalty and we’ve had good opportunities over the course of the game to go and win it and we had to break down the opposition who have defended resolutely throughout the game.

“I’m sure they were happy to get the point whereas you think with us having the extra man on the pitch for a longer period of time and the chances we did present we would probably turn round and say we didn’t get the three points that we wanted.

“But you look at the start of the season and if we could take four points from them you would probably think that was a good haul of points.”

In a cracking game full of incident, both managers were disagreeing about refereeing decision, albeit Adkins was remaining typically diplomatic.

He did however confess he didn’t believe the West Ham penalty should have been given and Saints should have got one for a second half handball.

“He never touched him. My view on the pitch was it wasn’t a penalty,”

said Adkins, whose side remain a point behind West Ham with the Hammers boasting a game in hand.

“I’ve tried to look at the video but the two angles I’ve looked at are inconclusive but does suggest he didn’t touch him.

“In my opinion it was not a penalty.”

He added: “The referee has made a call and he’s not seen a handball that I thought was a clear handball when Jose Fonte got in a header and I’m the only one jumping up and down.

“I’ve seen the video and it’s a clear penalty for us and the referee and the officials have not seen that.

“Sam was appealing for a couple of penalties as well which I didn’t see so I was unaware of those.

“I’ve asked a few questions and one might have been and one definitely wasn’t so the officials have had an interesting evening.”

Time will tell at the end of the season, weather this was a point 1 gained or 2 points lost, if we finish 1st or 2nd , we have had a good season, simple !!

As is often the case the summation of the commentary and the texts on Solent was slightly on the negative side ie "a good point but disappointing."

Of course with hindsight some things would be done differently - though even then you never know what the consequences might have been.

Consequences are astonishingly complex things. A mate was telling me the other night about various things he would have done differently in his youth. I reminded him that had he done so, the trillions to one chances of his particular two children being born would have fallen differently. He may have had other children, but not those two - the two he treasures more than anything else in his life.

On a bad night we'd have conceded the penalty and Taylor wouldn't have been daft enough to get sent off.

On a bad night Kelvin would have missed one of the two great saves he made.

On a bad night Hooi would have just missed his goal and Maynard would have just netted his late attempt.

So in my book this wasn't a bad night. The result determines that and it was a good result. Same goes with my mate and his great two kids.

Looking forward to seeing the incidents on Saints TV, especially Lallana's "dive"- if he did dive that's a shame cos his talent means he shouldn't need to resort to that kind of "tactic"- i'll reserve judgement til I've seen it.

Happy with four points off of a premiership team. The three points were there to be won and would of made better reading. But hey were in second place three points clear of the pack with our future in our own hands with 15 games to go. Is there anybody out there that would not of taken that at the start of the season???

Not sure why Jack Cork gave the ball away so much in the first half. When he joined the Club his successful passing rate was so good.

Kelv fantastic and nige should've brought tad Lee on for the last 10-15 to cause some more problems and give us a break ball. Saints fans in great numbers and hood voice and it was the battle of the songs, OWTS v bubbles. Is say we won!! last nights result was a good point gained and added to the three points we took from them at home not bad against a side still full of prem players. It's never easy against ten men so a draw was ok,just to put this seasons performance from the manager and coaching staff into perspective, huddersfield have sacked lee clark.after a run of poor results he gets the boot, this is the same bloke who lead his team to a record run last season and pushed saints right to the end almost getting automatic promotion.you sometimes dispair when chairmen sack managers willy nilly when the results go against them as clarky achieved that run with very little financial backing and a smallish squad.I just hope that our man in charge can hold his nerve and let adkins lead us to success if we have another dodgy spell, because it's not only most of our players that are learning at this level, nigel adkins is in new territory as well.He is having to learn as we go along so stick with him and i'm sure he is the man to get us where we want to get too, wether thats this season or not.

I know it was against 10 men, but how can you not be happy at taking a point off off West Ham in their own manor?

Our last 4 league matches have been against teams that have been in such good form, that had we lost all of them, (on the back of the bad spell we had in December and January) no one would have been surprised.

Draws against Cardiff, Birmingham and West Ham, 3 of the pre-season favourites for promotion, and a win against Burnley, a team with one of the best away records, show that we are back on track.

There are 45 points left to play for. If we claim 30 of those points, we will have a total of 86 points.
Not since the season 2001-02 has any team finishing 3rd (in this league) achieved that total, so based on that data, 86 points should see us go up in an automatic place.

The way teams are taking points off of each other, 86 points could even be enough to win the league this season.

Onwards and upwards.

The ref was in charge of 4 West Ham games last year (according to the programme) and I didn't hear any of their fans compaining about him before the match. I think he did a good job overall.
Certainly our boys had a tough match and the first 15/20 mins were hard, and our passing was a bit off. They managed to intercept a lot of our balls. It reminded me a bit of the start of the FA Cup Final vs Arsenal.
Don't know what beef Cole had with Kelvin either - that yellow could have been a red. Certainly Big Sam had given orders for them to be ugly - good that our boys kept their cool (just about!)
All-in-all a point was fair, but 3 would have been nice.

where in the rules is it a straight red for diving?
I personally don't blame him for trying as the ref was poor and clearly giving bad decisions everyone seems to have forgot Noble didnt't get touched for their penalty, blatant dive.

not sure I like the look of the rest of the fixtures.
We don't play any teams who are steady, Blackpool 4th at the moment + Middlesborough 8th, both yo-yoing and losing games they should win.
This means that every game we will be thinking we should win this, and then the problems start!!!
If we win every game, what a finish that would be!
But of course that ain't going to happen.
So as fans we are going to have to be sensible with our expectations and realise there will be games when things don't go according to plan.
Apart from all that, as long as we beat the skates while they still have a team, it will be a good season when we get promoted and they get relegated.
Do not want them going out of business, the joy of taking the pess out of their fans when we chat is the icing on the cake!!
Who do we want to go up with us ?
WHU + BHA ?
Good chance of them both strugging in the Prem and keeping us up there.

Good to read the posts from the guys that were at the game - cheers!

With so many of the top six - eight still to play each other there will be a lot more twists & turns before our train (thanks Jos) reaches its destination.

We are out of our December/January slump & playing well now with nearly everyone on board. It would be good to hear how Seabourne is doing & whether Chappers has had a setback?

We are going up, I am confident of that - COYR!!

Very True old friend, although i do have to say i do have to hold back a bit when it comes to the fish fiddling pikes.
Still my answer to who is a true fan
well Bertie Bassett (all sorts) but what i do know is in public i,m red and white to the core, across the beer table i,ll voice my opinions even with supporters of other teams. BUT one thing i never do is slag them in public SAINTS TILL I DIE

Lol at all WH fans thinking our support was crap Tuesday night. The only atmosphere they made was when they pumped music through their speakers and sang bubbles at the start and after half time!! Thought the SFC followers were in great numbers and good voice, OWTS was belted out well as were some other songs and we more than outsung them one song ponies. All in all a good point.

Let's just talk and debate the football like intelligently. No need to even give these timewasters a second thought.

What does WUM stand for? Sorry to ask a stupid question but think I've missed something here

WUM = Wind Up Merchant, it's a term for anyone that posts on a site with no intention of adding anything intelligent to the thread, whose only intent is to upset and irritate genuine posters, Troll is another term for persistent nuisances, unlike certain Tweeters, they are mostly harmless and post complete drivel, not really nasty, just teasers, timewasters, mostly sad and lonely people looking for attention, getting their kicks if people respond to their rubbish.

sad old pompey are literally draining away down the plughole ....

One of their critical weaknesses is that they cannot afford to get Red Cards or even a stack of Yellows ...

There should be money to be made on betting against pompey in the remaining games of the Season - cos if sides in the Championship raise their game against them - then I cannot see pompey picking up that many more points and then on top of that they have the points deduction ......

(and why shouldn't they - all the footballing clubs are stick of pompey and their antics and agreed that fratton park is number 1 sh1thole ....)

E-I-E-I-E-I-O

DOWN THE FOOTBALL LEAGUE - pompey go ...

This is no bad thing for pompey cos they can enhance their reputation as footballing thugs by beating up bore-mouth or some other small fry club.

Fingers crossed they might even meet plymouth in League Two - if all goes well.

Someone on The News site approached the FA about the Pompey player shortage situation, their reply was "that they couldn't comment". I find this strange because when we were having our problems I was constantly in touch with the FA on the situation and they always responded with positive replies to my questions, not always answering the question, but at least informative throughout.

Nuff said, let's concentrate on our own problems, leave them to theirs. Keep on gloating and we will have to put up their Numpties on here disrupting the threads.

THE MIGHTY SOUTHAMPTON ARE FIGHTING FOR AUTOMATIC PROMOTION IN THE CHAMPIONSHIP.

NIGEL MUST CONTINUE TO WORK EXTREMELY HARD ON HIS HOMEWORK TACTICS AND THE LADS ON THE TRAINING GROUND.

HE MUST SELECT HIS STRONGEST TEAM AND CHOOSE FROM HIS ARMY OF STRIKERS CORRECTLY TO ACHIEVE SUCCESS.

You don't like gloating - you don't like shouting ....

That's YOU !!!!

Lots of Saints Fans have been "kicked in the teeth" by pompey and their fans and been abused at that sh1thole fratton park and if they want to crow and gloat at portmouth's demise - then let them !!!

SHOUTING IS GOOD - ESPECIALLY ON THE TERRACES HOME AND AWAY ....

You be quiet if you want you ... but let other Saints Fans be ...

GET YOUR TEETH INTO THE AWAY FANS - BUT DON'T FIGHT OTHER SAINTS FANS !!

Off to see Tadanari Lee and Lee Sharp at West Quay - See you there !!!

Looking forward to seeing the incidents on Saints TV, especially Lallana's "dive"- if he did dive that's a shame cos his talent means he shouldn't need to resort to that kind of "tactic"- i'll reserve judgement til I've seen it. COYS
He did dive, no doubt about it and looked quiet ashamed of it afterwards, give him a break though every player does it now and then, i dont like it but its now part of the game! you will reserve judgment?? you sound as if hes just murdered someone! get over it! im sure he wont give a flying f*ck about your verdict anyway

Maybe the "no comment" is a response to one of the inbreds supposedly having received, and revealed, an e-mail from the FL customer service department, in which it is claimed the FL were misled by Antonov.
This comment is giving the blue few more hope that they will escape a points deduction, because it is "not their fault" they had another wrong'un in charge.
Or it could be that the rules on squad size are not the FA's responsibility, but that of the FL?
The other day, Appleton was moaning that their squad was down to 18 players, yet the FL had said at the start of the season that they needed 20 to be "competetive". How he hoped to fund the wages of any new loan players is beyond most people's comprehension, but PFC don't let reality get in the way of their plans.
