Frazer Richardson is Southampton's secret weapon

Frazer Richardson Frazer Richardson

SAINTS have one of the Championship’s most potent attacking threats – playing in their defence.

Right back Frazer Richardson has already notched more assists this season than any other player in the second tier of English football, having laid on an astonishing 11 goals for his side from his defensive role.

That leaves his nearest team mates in the shade with the celebrated attacking duo of Rickie Lambert and Adam Lallana having both recorded eight assists each.

Left back Danny Fox also has eight assists, albeit, unlike Richardson whose assists all come from open play, he does take a lot of free kicks and corners.

Richardson’s record is a remarkable feat – all the more given he has yet to actually score himself for Saints in his 54 appearances since joining from Charlton for £450,000 in July 2010.

Nigel Adkins encourages his full-backs to make overlapping runs to provide his side with width and it has paid off with Richardson’s astonishing assist rate, which is almost unheard of for a defender.

The other players who have managed 11 assists in the Championship this season – Chris Burke of Birmingham and Peter Whittingham of Cardiff – are attack-minded midfielders.

Throughout the entire Football League only six players have managed more assists, and all of those play in much more advanced roles.

In League One, MK Dons striker Dean Bowditch and Sheffield United’s attacking midfielders Stephen Quinn and Richard Cresswell have notched 12 each, while in League Two midfielders Lionel Ainsworth and Matt Ritchie have 12 apiece and Southend winger Ryan Hall has 14.

Saints are striving to reach the Premier League and Richardson’s stats look even more impressive when you compare him to the big names at that level.

Even if you isolate his league assists alone – Richardson has nine in the Championship and two in cup competitions – then only Manchester City’s David Silva, leading the attack for the best team in the land, and Tottenham’s Emmanuel Adebayor, can boast better with 12 and ten respectively.

Next best is Antonio Valencia with nine, while Ryan Giggs and Juan Mata trail Richardson with eight.

To put it into a little more context, Chelsea and England left back Ashley Cole has the most assists of any Premier League defender, being the only one to feature in the top 25, with six.

This has been a massive season for Richardson whose Saints career got off to an unfortunate start when he badly injured his shoulder only two days after joining the club on a pre-season trip to Switzerland.

Richardson required surgery and found himself behind Danny Butterfield in the pecking order as a settled side pushed on to gain promotion from League One.

However, Adkins showed faith in Alan Pardew’s second last Saints signing and made the 29- year-old his first choice right back this season and has been handsomely rewarded.

He is a great player, but I think Cardiff's Whittingham has 13 or 14 assists this season, so he doesn't have the most in the league.

I don't think he's a secret weapon!

A lot of our poor results over the last 2 months was due to teams preventing our full-backs getting forward as they knew this was the source of a lot of our goals.

He has been great though. It's a shame our left backs don't have quite as much defensive nouse as Fraser.

I'm so glad this item has been published. I've read some perplexing comments in Saints-related threads on this site recently from fans of the opinion that FR isn't up to the job. This proves he most definitely is.

The current Saints squad is the best we've seen for many years, and it's time unsung heroes like Richardson got some recognition. Personally, he makes my 1st choice 11 every time.

This is a special time to be a Saints fan.

Good on you FR. And good on you DE for the spotlight.

I have thought for a while that he is one of our best players and deserved some air time, trouble is on here it is like a school playground everyone wants to be a striker and only seem to recognise a player who has hit the back of the net and slate them if they miss

Yes, a good spot by the DE. But have I missed their piece on Rickie's birthday? Just flipping through the West Ham programme and noticed it's the Southampton Goal Machine's 30th birthday TODAY.

Butterfield was still only doing running exercise, a weeks or so back, so won't be fit to come into the side.

Reference the yellow cards, I don't think the 5 card trick equals suspension once a certain date has been passed.

Not sure what the date is, but we are well passed it, so they shouldn't get a suspension, until they now reach 10 yellows, I think.

Curious down under; can anyone say if SMS got the new sound system or swipe card system for STs? I think Nicola was saying last year that 4-7m was required for both?

I wondered if all this was due to some of the Chambo money.. not that it matters one iota.

Marvellous for us down under that the Reading changed.. we get an 8.45am Saturday kick off... bacon egg coffee pot and football on wide screen via PC while the missus has a lay in... add 3 pts and that'll be heaven - it doesn't get any better than that.

I think you may be right ...

Focusing on the SAINTS rather than the sad demise of the blue few ......

LOL :O)

Saw Billy Sharp today - he just moved Club - had all this vile abuse - and getting into his stride after a workman-like performance at West Ham.

He WILL get goals for SAINTS !!!

Tadanari Lee also was at the signing and both are very popular players.

The BIG question for Southampton FC is the correct and effective use of our Strikers and on these decisions will make or break whether we progress to the Premiership.

I was upset when we lost the Ox to Arsenal - but both his Dad and Alex were greedy f*ckers and I saw Arsenal got turned over 4-0 last night ... (shame eh)

The reason I wanted Ox at Southampton is that We all recognised his potential to get this Club to the Premiership ...........

Moving on .. it is accepted that BILLY AND RICKIE are the best Striking partnership.

Not every ball has to go through Billy though - there are other outlets and at West Ham Adam should have taken the shot on rather than a misplaced pass to Billy which he could not reach .....
He probably would have scored and we would have beaten the hammers who should not be sitting on the top of the table with their hooooooof ball and all their claims for penalties ........

Who are our impact Strikers ?????

Lee Barnard - on current form NO - go on Lee prove me wrong but since your bit of trouble last year you have not been the same player or prolific goal scorer and injuries have not helped.

5/10

Tadanari Lee - Popular Chant at St Mary's - lively player - needs to work on being more robust in keeping the ball and getting the shots away on target .... has lots of potential.

7/10

David Connoly - Is a Legend for that goal against brighton last year. Has notched a few goals this Season - but not scored recently and it is a close call between him and Tadanari Lee who gets the nod from Nigel ....

7/10

There are lots of views from lots of Saints Fans - lets hear them ...

IT IS ESSENTIAL NIGEL GETS THIS RIGHT.

NIGEL HAS AN ARMY OF STRIKERS AND THE CROWD WANT WINS AND GOALS AT ST MARY'S.

NIGEL ATKINS RED AND WHITE ARMY.

This post is off topic .....

IT IS ESSENTIAL THAT SAINTS FANS REMAIN SAFE ...

EXAMPLE 1.

Last Season at Plymouth ... a few fans went in the Plymouth End and one fan in particular couldn't contain his excitement and jumped around - only to be set on by green army and end up been swamped in a sea of fists and given a good kicking ....

THAT IS NOT SENSIBLE BEHAVIOUR - but shows the extremes our Supporters will go to to watch the MIGHTY SOUTHAMPTON.

EXAMPLE 2.

Chanting outside the Stadium incurs its own risks and if you are in a well established group - no issue.

Chanting singly or in a very small number may well incur a penalty from the Home Side .... i.e a good punch up or kicking.

Clubs like Ipswich - not a problem ... try it at West Ham etc and there will be trouble.

There is always safety in numbers and that's why AWAY Fans try and meet up at the Pubs with other Saints Fans or go to the Ground and drink safely in the Away End Bar (if you can stand the prices and short measures)

Meant to say Saturday, obviously. It's an open question by the way. If you know then please post.

Oh, and I forgot to say; Red army, you are definitely my favourite poster. Not forgetting the the likes of Seedhouse, Slugger, Franiow and Tirau Dan etc.

To be honest. I think all of you are awesome. Except for Fatty ford and GHK (the real one) though - those guys are **** in their own unique way.

It is now 1.51 am so I must, regrettably say goodbye for now.

I forgot to answer your original question - yes we are at home on Saturday - to Derby, 3.00pm kick-off.

I expect another convincing performance; 3-0 will do with Ricky & Billy getting one each. Don't mind who gets the other one; maybe someone who hasn't scored for a while. Kelv? ;-)

Glory Hunter ...;O) LOL

I had a brilliant time at Bournemouth Away Last Season . We came away with the WIN and our magnificent AWAY SQUAD could be heard singing and chanting all the way to the Train Station ..

(Happy Days)

I was at Notts County Away last Season and it was a right laugh with and lots of Red Army's outside the Stadium .......

The Crowd were fantastic as always ...

4,000 went to Reading Away and chanting and singing outside the Stadium continued and it was really good.

WE ARE THE TOP DOGS IN THE SOUTH

WE ARE SOUTHAMPTON.
WE DO WHAT WE WANT.

I am always UP for having great Away Days and continuing the fun as long as possible ...

The above post could have been summarised .... Don't leave yourself isolated or outnumbered ...

RED ARMY. STRONG AND TOGETHER AS ONE. FIGHT AND WIN.

"He who learns to run away lives to fight another day", that's my motto in these situations, my escutcheon has on it three white feathers and a yellow streak, and I always carry a white hanky! Need I say more. Coward, me no, just still alive to tell the tale.
