Adkins delighted by quality of Saints' finishing

Nigel Adkins congratulates Tadanari Lee Nigel Adkins congratulates Tadanari Lee

NIGEL Adkins hailed his ruthless Saints side after they thumped Derby 4-0 to move back to the top of the table.

Jos Hooiveld got the ball rolling at St Mary’s with an early goal, before second-half strikes from Aaron Martin, Adam Lallana and Tadanari Lee completed the rout.

Adkins was thrilled with the quality of the performance, as well as the finishing.

“It was a good 4-0 victory and some good goals,” said the Saints boss. “The supporters got behind the players, everyone’s together as one.

“I think we’ve demonstrated we can score goals again today, resilient defensively. Derby had a little spell just before half-time and just after half-time, we weathered that okay, and we’ve scored some exceptionally good goals.

“Adam Lallana’s from open play, he’s broke the play up in our defensive third and we’ve had an interchange of passes and what a fantastic goal that was.

“Then you talk about Tadanari Lee’s goal – what a strike that was.”

I think we shall not that many games in the Championship today so should be on a bit longer. Think is worth staying up just for the 4th Goal COYR

Biggest low point of the day by far - Tadanari's goal.

After two coffees I needed a pee and at 3-0 up I thought I might as well pop down to the loo. Then tinkling away I heard a huge cheer and raced back.... just in time to see Tadanari celebrating in the corner. "Was it a good goal?" I asked. "Brilliant" came the reply. "B@gger!"

Jeez - a great goal, Tadanari's very first for Saints and I missed it.

I do like the "All together as one" mantra. Makes me think of 'Come Together' from Primal Scream's 'Screamadelica' (aka the second best album ever made). We should play it when the team comes out.

Cheers dude. It's always hard to tell just how good your own team is because you're so close to it that you're slightly obscured by emotions that mean you either judge too harshly or not harshly enough. But it seems like we've got our demon back and are playing well again. I hope you're right about promotion.

Thanks who ever you are, wish you luck for the rest of the season.

Looking at West Ham's remaining fixtures they have to play every team from 3rd to 12th in the league. Could be interesting if the refs dont keep on giving them penalty's

I think you'll find that those that can't make it to every match or live abroad do put money into the club, paying for Saints Player and also still purchase merchandise. No matter where someone comes from you can still be just as big a fan as someone who does watch every game and when you do get to see them you sing twice as loud. Also, with your narrow-minded view we'll have just 15,000 fans allowed, those season ticket holders, and we'll not be trying to expand the Saints brand abroad, such as Japan. This would lower our income greatly, reducing the amount of money available to spend on players. Didn't you want us to spend £20million this window?! I'm sure you also mentioned Lee wasn't a good enough signing as he was on a free, but all I've heard is good things about him, saying he gets stuck in and actually runs at goal with the ball. However, I congratulate you on being positive about Saints and hope that it continues.

Well I was there again as all true supporters are. Brilliant game, great to see Lee get his first goal. Sharp I have to admit doesn't look fit. Had a couple of beers in the the members bar which is on the kingsland side for people who don't know the stadium.
There's plenty of true supporters who can't get to the games at the moment, such as those of us in the antipodes who you loved to abuse the other week (thanks by the way for the apology - not).

By the way, watch out for that ghk personage. If you say something he vaguely doesn't like he'll abuse you too & you'll lose your little friend.

You've shown yours again with your abuse of other fans.

Give it a rest, you're boring, divisive & unable to hear anyone's opinion that doesn't agree with yours.

Will Big Sam chew through his tongue as Blackpool get at them?
Will Pompey be docked any more points before the end of season?

I know yourself and others are supporting from a distance and it is nice knowing we have support around the world, maybe because of that distance you feel you have to be more positive, I don't know. But don't have a pop at others who do go to games and get frustrated. Adult and 2 kids is £49 add on hot dogs coke and beer and you'll be lucky to get change from £100 on a saints day out. When we win it's lovely but lose and worse still play badly it is frustrating. This forum helps vent frustration as going back to a boozer and discussing things does. When sharp scored there was a bit of togetherness on here but impersonating others for a wind up is infantile, say if we all did it what would happen then? Yes they have shown their true colours as any 1 that does not conform they try and bully out.

Just watched the FLS on i-player...what a great piece on the club!
Even Adkins is coming out with "The future's bright - it's red & white" at the end of his interview.
Not the best coverage - but scoring from corners, and the two from open play showed we are not a one man team.
Need some luck on Tuesday night - best result for us? I think a draw personally - but others will want WHU to win to put a bigger gap between us and the pack.
Not sure about next week at Watford - could be a tough game, but Palace made them look ordinary!
Leeds the week after will be a test as Warnock will have done his bit to get them up for a play-off push. Not paying £36 when I can watch it on TV.

It was a good piece, wasn't it? But did anyone understand Nigel's sentence about the consequences of consistency being success and consistency being the consequence of success? It weaved in and out of the boundaries of comprehension so much that it left me flat on my backside, like a right back trying to track Adam Lallana on a particularly mazey run.

So, you know, don't rule it out...

You're right Franiow - I thought it sounded vaguely familiar. Wasn't it Churchill's post Alamein speech on the radio viz:

"It was the dependabilty of our ascendency, the regularity of our pre-eminence, the unchanging good fortune and the undeviating and steady prospering of our making good that brought our inevitable triumph.

"Let us therefore brace ourselves to our duties and so bear ourselves so that we are constituted to ensure that propositions even from different axioms of the system do not contradict each other or threaten the accordance of a favourable outcome.

"Never in the field of human conflict has so much consistent success been so successfully consistent."

Great speech, but mind you, I think Winnie had had more than a few whiskies that day.

I hope Nigel will next borrow from Winstons greatest ever speech, made after the Battle of Britain...the famous "The higher they got the fewer" oration.

Anyway, onwards and upwards, 3 points at Watford please and then Leeds. There is an excellent piece in the Sunday Times as to why the skates do not deserve to get off this time. Well written and worth a read. It can be found on page six of the sports section under the heading: 'Portsmouth pay price for absurd delusions of grandeur.'

I remember a pen save by an outfielder in the late sixties He came on I think when Eric Martin made a hard save ruled a foul and had to go off injured.. I don;t think he was sent off.. Now for the life of me trying to remember who nicked his jumper went in a saved it.. right on the whistle it was... anyone recall it?
I can picture a tall forward with lots of hair but can't pick a name????

PS anyone seen Frazer Richardson in goallie training? thats the answer invid.. Nigel must trust him enough.

Dexter Blackstock against Newcastle a few years ago in an F.A. Cup tie. His jersey was huge. We lost. Newcastle fans were shouting "shoot" from the halfway line.

Agree with you completely.

But I should point out Rod Liddle wrote a piece about Saints 18 months ago which said we were a provincial club not a big club and we didn't deserve to be back in the Prem.

The top division didn't need clubs like Saints and it was for big clubs only and not for clubs who had supporters with ideas above their station. (Or words to that effect.)

I thought fack him. It will be interesting to see what he writes if some of the Big Prem clubs are exposed by HMRC as using overseas benefit trusts to pay their foreign players and so avoid paying tax in GB, a la Glasgow Rangers.

Hey Dan, Frazer is out due to injury, which makes it an even bigger gamble, One of my brothers jokingly suggested that as NA is on the team sheet as manager he could go in goal, that could be true if he was player/manager but I would bet a dollar the FL would find an excuse to dock us points for a non licenced player

It would be interesting to know NA's point of view...it's pretty rare for a goalie to be sent off/get a serious injury. I guess he's just playing the odds. He does like to use all 3 substitutions each game and a calculated gamble on more outfield options may pay off. Either way, it won't be an issue when we revert back to seven subs (ie get promoted!).

Yeah I agree Bill but you know Saints luck, or lack of it NA does not play with luck which makes us believe that one of the outfield must be able to put in a shift in goal.

I doubt if he'll take the risk without a player that had been approved by the goal keeping coach and that he'd checked him out in training. I have enough faith in our backs.. we'll just have to wait and see if any other outfield has the seal of approval... but surely Bart will be back on the bench.

We are a provincial club. When the overspending clubs fall apart, as they should and will, we will see the likes of Forest, Derby, Leeds, Ipswich, Norwich, Wolverhampton, Southampton and many others have a chance of something again. If they have a productive youth system and are well managed both on and off the pitch they can have their moments.

Not naming a 'keeper on the bench is a gamble at home, but way too risky for away games when KD is likely to be far busier and risks injury or a straight red. Can we assume NA therefore has little faith in Bart? (I don't)
On a different note - can you lot PLEASE stop saying 'should of', it's SHOULD HAVE!!!!!
Last thing - i'd like the exits locked until the game's finished please, got to stop these part-timers leaving before the end, it doesn't look good and it's disrespectful to the players

It is high risk. None of the outfields will be up to this level of keeping. There's always the chance of a red with a keeper and an immediate penalty to save. I know he wants as many options as possible, and he's certainly used them well, but I'd like to see a keeper there.

I agree, NA has been taking a pretty chance, albeit quite a low risk, KD is thankfully relatively bomb proof and not prone to the red mist.
Mind you I think Cheungs impact yesterday is probably bad news for Connors, who could be sacrificed for Bart.

Sadly I think Connors may be the one to dip out Bart could always come on up front and out muscle one in the net!!

I do trust Nigel in his selection as the outfield gk candidate would have been checked out and had a crash course from the gk coach.

I did notice on bbc that Gus has been touted as possible replacement for Harry at Spurs if Harry gets England. Gus said he leap at the chance... yep and do a back flip, scratch his armpits and beat his chest.. lol

What a treat to see corners turned in and to see action in the box. I'd still like the ball to go wide a bit and score of crosses.. just a couple of times a game would be good.. mix it up a bit.

After a pound coin was seen being thrown onto the pitch at Fratton Park last week...Police are said to be still investigating whether it was a missile or a takeover bid.
meanwhile the administrator has enlisted local enthusiasts with metal detectors to sweep the pitch for more coins in mud... every bit helps he says.
