Adkins delighted by quality of Saints' finishing

Daily Echo: Nigel Adkins congratulates Tadanari Lee Nigel Adkins congratulates Tadanari Lee

NIGEL Adkins hailed his ruthless Saints side after they thumped Derby 4-0 to move back to the top of the table.

Jos Hooiveld got the ball rolling at St Mary’s with an early goal, before second-half strikes from Aaron Martin, Adam Lallana and Tadanari Lee completed the rout.

Adkins was thrilled with the quality of the performance, as well as the finishing.

“It was a good 4-0 victory and some good goals,” said the Saints boss. “The supporters got behind the players, everyone’s together as one.

“I think we’ve demonstrated we can score goals again today, resilient defensively. Derby had a little spell just before half-time and just after half-time, we weathered that okay, and we’ve scored some exceptionally good goals.

“Adam Lallana’s from open play, he’s broke the play up in our defensive third and we’ve had an interchange of passes and what a fantastic goal that was.

“Then you talk about Tadanari Lee’s goal – what a strike that was.”

I think we shall not that many games in the Championship today so should be on a bit longer. Think is worth staying up just for the 4th Goal COYR

Biggest low point of the day by far - Tadanari's goal.

After two coffees I needed a pee and at 3-0 up I thought I might as well pop down to the loo. Then tinkling away I heard a huge cheer and raced back.... just in time to see Tadanari celebrating in the corner. "Was it a good goal?" I asked. "Brilliant" came the reply. "B@gger!"

Jeez - a great goal, Tadanari's very first for Saints and I missed it.

(We should also play 'Saints' by The Breeders. Cracking record.)

But they obviously love the Saints, it's just the way they express their desire for us to do well. Although we are all individuals, we all have one thing in common...our Super Saints! I feel even more certain than before that we are off on a run now, guys. Hold tight! (Thanks NC I will never forget this) batesieboy

Oh sh1t, I said the word "positive" without being given permission & being 340,000,000 miles away.

I hang my head in shame.......
You've got some nerve. How dare you try and spread poison like that from the other side of the world. You'll find that nothing spurs a team on like relentless and I'll-considered criticism. Up your game, please.
I'm sorry. It must be all this summer sunshine. It's gone to my head & forced me to make an appreciative comment about my team.

COME ON ADKINS, SORT IT OUT FFS!

ONLY 4-0 & ONLY TOP OF THE LEAGUE - SORT IT OUT, NOW!!!!!!!!

Very good football played today and i thought spiderman was M.O T M. Not usally on his side but today he and Chappers, Cork, adam, kelvin, foxy fonse, hoover, dan,Billy,RICKIE, Chung and Martin were outstanding.Another performance like that next week and another three points. I reckon 9 more wins and we are there. WHO'S LAUGHING NOW.

Cheers dude. It's always hard to tell just how good your own team is because you're so close to it that you're slightly obscured by emotions that mean you either judge too harshly or not harshly enough. But it seems like we've got our demon back and are playing well again. I hope you're right about promotion.

Thanks who ever you are, wish you luck for the rest of the season.

Looking at West Ham's remaining fixtures they have to play every team from 3rd to 12th in the league. Could be interesting if the refs dont keep on giving them penalty's

Well I was there again as all true supporters are. Brilliant game, great to see Lee get his first goal. Sharp I have to admit doesn't look fit. Had a couple of beers in the the members bar which is on the kingsland side for people who don't know the stadium.

I think he found the statue of ted this week, members bar maybe next game. They've failed miserably getting fans back to the station it was empty last week, one plus no probs getting to the baaaaa!
Nice to hear from a real fans take on the game, funny sharp not looking fit. Think it's probably confidence, a goal should sort him out.

Thank you GHK, Think Sharps fitness will improve in the coming weeks. I think Lee is going to me a great player. I think the whole team played really well today. Must admit heart was in my mouth when Dan Harding took out the guy in the corner.

Only my second home game this season (Boro being the first) but folllow these threads daily. Awesome performance, thought Spider was immense today as was Cork and Lallana. Passing superb, and the 3rd & 4th Goals were superb. Took my 9 year old nephew to only his second game and he was loving it, but did ask me what are they singing pointing at the Northam "err Is this the way to Amarillo mate" didnt think it right to tell him at that age!

Lee still needs time to settle I have heard some negatives about him. Similar to guly I don't think he's every ones cup of tea, maybe a little un orthodox. Hopefully confidence and the rest some have had thru injury, will see us thru to end of season. Good to see Cardiff slip and can't believe posh thumped b.city, a load more twist and turns til the end of season. I want auto promotion think we would struggle in play offs.

Cheers thomo. I've supported saints all me life had no choice! I'm allowed to knock em with fellow fans but would stick up for them against other teams supporters. Same as family.
Funny too that away from this forum most fans have similar views to me?

I think you'll find that those that can't make it to every match or live abroad do put money into the club, paying for Saints Player and also still purchase merchandise. No matter where someone comes from you can still be just as big a fan as someone who does watch every game and when you do get to see them you sing twice as loud. Also, with your narrow-minded view we'll have just 15,000 fans allowed, those season ticket holders, and we'll not be trying to expand the Saints brand abroad, such as Japan. This would lower our income greatly, reducing the amount of money available to spend on players. Didn't you want us to spend £20million this window?! I'm sure you also mentioned Lee wasn't a good enough signing as he was on a free, but all I've heard is good things about him, saying he gets stuck in and actually runs at goal with the ball. However, I congratulate you on being positive about Saints and hope that it continues.

Looking at West Ham's remaining fixtures they have to play every team from 3rd to 12th in the league. Could be interesting if the refs dont keep on giving them penalty's
It's always smashing to get reports from fans of other clubs. Sportsmanship should apply to fans. Good on you.

I don't feel entitled to comment until I have read his positive match report.
Well I was there again as all true supporters are. Brilliant game, great to see Lee get his first goal. Sharp I have to admit doesn't look fit. Had a couple of beers in the the members bar which is on the kingsland side for people who don't know the stadium.
There's plenty of true supporters who can't get to the games at the moment, such as those of us in the antipodes who you loved to abuse the other week (thanks by the way for the apology - not).

By the way, watch out for that ghk personage. If you say something he vaguely doesn't like he'll abuse you too & you'll lose your little friend.

True colours, eh?

You've shown yours again with your abuse of other fans.

Give it a rest, you're boring, divisive & unable to hear anyone's opinion that doesn't agree with yours.

In NA & NC I trust - told you it would all come good again without spending 20 million quid or more.

All in all, It’s been a great week for Saints fans.
The promotion push is well on track and other results continue to assist us.
Will Brum consider the FA cup replay an attraction or distraction?
Will Big Sam chew through his tongue as Blackpool get at them?
Will Pompey be docked any more points before the end of season?
What goes around comes around, I wish them all that they wished us

Do me a favour and look back to 7.59pm, that isn't me posting that is from slugger impersonating me, why? I suppose only he knows. What I do know is that it spoilt celebrating a cracking win and performance, may be I shouldn't of reacted but why not defend yourself?
I know yourself and others are supporting from a distance and it is nice knowing we have support around the world, maybe because of that distance you feel you have to be more positive, I don't know. But don't have a pop at others who do go to games and get frustrated. Adult and 2 kids is £49 add on hot dogs coke and beer and you'll be lucky to get change from £100 on a saints day out. When we win it's lovely but lose and worse still play badly it is frustrating. This forum helps vent frustration as going back to a boozer and discussing things does. When sharp scored there was a bit of togetherness on here but impersonating others for a wind up is infantile, say if we all did it what would happen then? Yes they have shown their true colours as any 1 that does not conform they try and bully out.

I do like the "All together as one" mantra. Makes me think of 'Come Together' from Primal Scream's 'Screamadelica' (aka the second best album ever made). We should play it when the team comes out. (We should also play 'Saints' by The Breeders. Cracking record.)
Great soundtrack choices, St Retford. I particularly love the Breeders song - Always used to get the DJ's at Rhinos and the Nexus to play it for the Saints connection!

And what a result yesterday. This season is turning into a dream. NA and the current squad are fast approaching legend status. Long may the bus / boat ride continue! ...

I would imagine the majority of fans who post on here are like me ?.
I have spent over 40 years following this Football team and during that time I have spent literally thousands doing so.
I take up to three sometimes four of my lads with me, this season with promotion looming I am making the most of it because if we reach the promised land it will cost an absolute Mint to carry on doing it.
SFC has become a huge part of their lives and I am grateful for its existence.
The Forum is a great place for viewing debate and opinion, yesterday i was critical of things at the game, things come into your head like, what if we started the game with the players that finished it, would it be 8 and not 4 ?, some guys on here are slaughtered for saying things that do not conform and it is a shame.
Please, lets keep it real so everyone here and fans abroad can see, debate and give opinion without all the Crap.

Just watched the FLS on i-player...what a great piece on the club!
Even Adkins is coming out with "The future's bright - it's red & white" at the end of his interview.
Not the best coverage - but scoring from corners, and the two from open play showed we are not a one man team.
Need some luck on Tuesday night - best result for us? I think a draw personally - but others will want WHU to win to put a bigger gap between us and the pack.
Not sure about next week at Watford - could be a tough game, but Palace made them look ordinary!
Leeds the week after will be a test as Warnock will have done his bit to get them up for a play-off push. Not paying £36 when I can watch it on TV.

It was a good piece, wasn't it? But did anyone understand Nigel's sentence about the consequences of consistency being success and consistency being the consequence of success? It weaved in and out of the boundaries of comprehension so much that it left me flat on my backside, like a right back trying to track Adam Lallana on a particularly mazey run.

Would you believe it. I thought the debate on here gets a bit heated from time to time, but my auntie Elspeth who claims to be spookily in touch with the afterlife up in the ether, tells me it's a right battle up there.

Saints fans include Moses, Albert Einstein, Wolfgang Mozart, the Dalai Lama, Alexander the Great, Martin Luther King, Charles Darwin, William Shakespeare, Mahatma Gandi and Winston Churchill, DeadArmy1 and Seedhouse the Repented..

On the skates side there's Adolf Hitler, Pol Pot, Stalin, Saddam Hussein, Attila the Hun, Idi Amin, Mussolini, Caligula and (no surprise) Osama Bin Laden.

The worst spat is between the Russians - our fan
Peter the Great and the skate Ivan the Terrible. Peter's calling him things like Ivan Enormousdebt and Ivan Headlikeaknob. DeadArmy1's sat on a cloud and keeps pointing down and singing "Saint-gels, Saint-gels we
sh!t on the evils below, below."

I must admit my Auntie Elspeth is a bit suspect on the marbles front and her tales are often a bit suspect. But this has a real ring of truth to it and I think I may have misjudged her. I must ask her later what Albert Einstein thinks of Tadanari's pace.

Long may the bus / boat ride continue! ...

Don't remember ever saying we should have spent £20 million but I did want investment. Lee has turned out to be a great signing and have stated that. Glad he got a good run out yesterday instead of 2 minutes at the end.
£20m was a general figure as to how much to gamble for a £90m promotion reward.
No one said we needed to or should go and spend that much, just frustrated at the time of lack of movement in transfer Market. When sharp signed remember a general contentment may be short of a defender (quality) Of players bought in.
I still believe if we are promoted there is going to have to be a movement of players in and out to stay in prem.

There's still six games left after the Pompey game. They would have to be all types of sh1t for it to be the game against us that sends them down.

So, you know, don't rule it out...
If we can't send them down, when we play them, maybe we can secure an auto promotion place and then, if Coventry need the 3 points on the last day, we can hope for a home defeat?????

You're right Franiow - I thought it sounded vaguely familiar. Wasn't it Churchill's post Alamein speech on the radio viz:

"It was the dependabilty of our ascendency, the regularity of our pre-eminence, the unchanging good fortune and the undeviating and steady prospering of our making good that brought our inevitable triumph.

"Let us therefore brace ourselves to our duties and so bear ourselves so that we are constituted to ensure that propositions even from different axioms of the system do not contradict each other or threaten the accordance of a favourable outcome.

"Never in the field of human conflict has so much consistent success been so successfully consistent."

Great speech, but mind you, I think Winnie had had more than a few whiskies that day.

I hope Nigel will next borrow from Winstons greatest ever speech, made after the Battle of Britain...the famous "The higher they got the fewer" oration.

Great crowd although I'd still like to see fewer empty seats, with the run in we need as many cheering on as possible.

Anyway, onwards and upwards, 3 points at Watford please and then Leeds. Warnock or not we are well capable of taking something from our trip to Elland road, if we play like yesterday then there should be no problem. And thats not taking anything for granted, it's just that if we want promotion then we have to perform. Simples! COYR's! FOP! :o)

Great win and superb team effort.

There is an excellent piece in the Sunday Times as to why the skates do not deserve to get off this time. Well written and worth a read. It can be found on page six of the sports section under the heading: 'Portsmouth pay price for absurd delusions of grandeur.'

Agree with you completely.

But I should point out Rod Liddle wrote a piece about Saints 18 months ago which said we were a provincial club not a big club and we didn't deserve to be back in the Prem.

The top division didn't need clubs like Saints and it was for big clubs only and not for clubs who had supporters with ideas above their station. (Or words to that effect.)

I thought fack him. It will be interesting to see what he writes if some of the Big Prem clubs are exposed by HMRC as using overseas benefit trusts to pay their foreign players and so avoid paying tax in GB, a la Glasgow Rangers.

Hey Dan, Frazer is out due to injury, which makes it an even bigger gamble, One of my brothers jokingly suggested that as NA is on the team sheet as manager he could go in goal, that could be true if he was player/manager but I would bet a dollar the FL would find an excuse to dock us points for a non licenced player

It would be interesting to know NA's point of view...it's pretty rare for a goalie to be sent off/get a serious injury. I guess he's just playing the odds. He does like to use all 3 substitutions each game and a calculated gamble on more outfield options may pay off. Either way, it won't be an issue when we revert back to seven subs (ie get promoted!).

I doubt if he'll take the risk without a player that had been approved by the goal keeping coach and that he'd checked him out in training. I have enough faith in our backs.. we'll just have to wait and see if any other outfield has the seal of approval... but surely Bart will be back on the bench.

We are a provincial club. When the overspending clubs fall apart, as they should and will, we will see the likes of Forest, Derby, Leeds, Ipswich, Norwich, Wolverhampton, Southampton and many others have a chance of something again. If they have a productive youth system and are well managed both on and off the pitch they can have their moments.

Not naming a 'keeper on the bench is a gamble at home, but way too risky for away games when KD is likely to be far busier and risks injury or a straight red. Can we assume NA therefore has little faith in Bart? (I don't)
On a different note - can you lot PLEASE stop saying 'should of', it's SHOULD HAVE!!!!!
Last thing - i'd like the exits locked until the game's finished please, got to stop these part-timers leaving before the end, it doesn't look good and it's disrespectful to the players

It is high risk. None of the outfields will be up to this level of keeping. There's always the chance of a red with a keeper and an immediate penalty to save. I know he wants as many options as possible, and he's certainly used them well, but I'd like to see a keeper there.

I agree, NA has been taking a pretty chance, albeit quite a low risk, KD is thankfully relatively bomb proof and not prone to the red mist.
Mind you I think Cheungs impact yesterday is probably bad news for Connors, who could be sacrificed for Bart.

Watched Brighton get dumped out the cup an their GK was awful.

It is high risk. None of the outfields will be up to this level of keeping. There's always the chance of a red with a keeper and an immediate penalty to save. I know he wants as many options as possible, and he's certainly used them well, but I'd like to see a keeper there.
i agree it's a gamble , so far so good ......... in our manager i trust !
It's gambling on luck not on the ability of the manager!
any gamble is a "gamble" , not being a manager , as always i'll bow to the man paid to do the job and i'll do mine as i know you'll do yours !

Sadly I think Connors may be the one to dip out Bart could always come on up front and out muscle one in the net!!

I do trust Nigel in his selection as the outfield gk candidate would have been checked out and had a crash course from the gk coach.

I did notice on bbc that Gus has been touted as possible replacement for Harry at Spurs if Harry gets England. Gus said he leap at the chance... yep and do a back flip, scratch his armpits and beat his chest.. lol

What a treat to see corners turned in and to see action in the box. I'd still like the ball to go wide a bit and score of crosses.. just a couple of times a game would be good.. mix it up a bit.

There are out players that can put the gloves on if really needed.Frazer for one, i dont think NIGEL would make that sort of gamble at this stage of the season. In Nigel we trust even though he is sounding more like Wee Gordon after every game. C O Y REDSSSSSSSS.

borrowed this but is a classic.

After a pound coin was seen being thrown onto the pitch at Fratton Park last week...Police are said to be still investigating whether it was a missile or a takeover bid.
meanwhile the administrator has enlisted local enthusiasts with metal detectors to sweep the pitch for more coins in mud... every bit helps he says.
There was a rumour that there were some coins left on the right wing in front of the Fratton end after Danny Wallace visited in 1984! Sorry we have no bananas!
