YOUNG historians in the Ulverston area are being offered help to trace their ancestors.

The Heritage Centre on Lower Brook Street is planning to set up a young historians group for ten to 18-year-olds.

Youngsters will meet every Saturday and get help to research their family tree.

The Heritage Centre will provide books about how to get started and then offer expert advice will be given on how to use the internet to trace ancestors.

The group will also be able to use old records of births, deaths and marriages, which are stored at the centre.

One of the directors at the centre Neil Curry said: "I think we will get a lot of youngsters interested in this and, once they start, I think they will be hooked.

As well as the work in the centre, they will also be able to do research on their own computers once they know what sites to look at.

"We have got no definite starting date but once the youngsters have signed up we will start straight away."

Youngsters interested in taking part in the project can get a form from the Heritage Centre on Lower Brook Street.

The course costs £7 for two children and £4 for one.

The Heritage Centre has just been awarded a grant of £500 from the Townlands Trust.

The money is to be spent on Victorian clothing so when school children from the Ulverston area visit the

centre, they can dress up and get a feel for the history of the town.
