Tadanari Lee hoping to earn first start for Southampton

Tadanari Lee scores his first Saints goal Tadanari Lee scores his first Saints goal

TADANARI Lee is hoping his wonder goal against Derby will earn him a first Saints league start since his January move.

The Japanese striker bagged his first Saints goal with a stunning strike across the penalty area and into the opposite top corner to round off his side’s 4-0 hammering of Derby at St Mary’s last weekend.

Lee, pictured, came on at half time to replace Billy Sharp, who is still settling into life on the south coast, and is now pushing to take his place in the starting line-up when Saints visit Watford tomorrow.

Nigel Adkins is blessed with a host of top class Championship strikers from which to select but, as ever, the choice is who will partner Rickie Lambert.

Sharp has been preferred since his £1.8m switch from Doncaster last month and has shown signs of striking up a good partnership with Lambert but has not had quite the goal threat he usually carries as he gets used to his new surroundings.

Lee has been enjoying a similar settling in period after J-League football in Japan but his goal against Derby has put him well into contention to bag a start.

David Connolly is another option having been on the bench in recent weeks whilst Adkins should also be able to call upon Guly do Prado again.

The Brazilian was forced to sit out the Derby game through illness but could come back into the side at Vicarage Road tomorrow.

Should Adkins decide to include him then he will face a very tough choice – either play him up front with Lambert or drop Richard Chaplow from the right of midfield after his impressive return to the side following injury.

Adkins is also hoping that Frazer Richardson will have recovered sufficiently from his minor injury to return to the team. If not then Dan Harding could continue to deputise at right back or there could be a first league appearance since October for the fit again Danny Butterfield.

Jos Hooiveld was withdrawn at half time in the Derby game having already scored to put Saints ahead.

That move was a precaution as he was again feeling the tight hamstring that had kept him out of action for a few weeks previously.

Hooiveld should be fully fit and ready to start again alongside Jose Fonte in the centre of the Saints defence.

Lee could turn out to be the find of the season, think Billy sharp still has a few personal issues, which is understandable, the manager will have to make sure every one is focused for the run in, who ever starts up front let's how they get to take the match ball home 5 - 0 win would be nice !!!

I would like to see Lee start in this one, and I think Sharp is going to take longer to bed in than we thought, so maybe his turn to come off the bench as an impact player for now. Lee and Lallana playing off Lambert. Let's go out to win.

I'm sure Nigel will 'earn his corn' and unlike alex ferguson (old duffer) (ref :manure vs ajax) will get the Team Selection right.

Who is the better impact striker ????

Lee with his wonder goal or Billy who is more robust in his
tackling and may be better utilised in the first half.

Nigel has an Army of Strikers to choose from ....

Left-footed.

And the goal he scored in the Cup Final was with his left too.

I'd leave him as an impact player for now. Sharp needs a massive confidence boost and that will come with starts and goals!

Depends on your age and if you are a existing Season Ticket holder, the savings are greater if you get in early.
I have heard that the Turnstiles are going over to the Barcode Computerised system similar to a few other clubs, hopefully this cost will not be passed on to us.
Expect to pay around £600 for an Adult in a good spot if we achieve promotion,if we don't subtract £100.If you are a student or certain age then chop of one to two hundred quid.
Rough estimate but hope it helps.

I just hope Billy isn't one of those players who thrives on being the main man, he needs to accept he is now in a team full of talented players and will have to put in the effort and be patient because whilst Tadanari and Rickie are on form he will have to put up with a place on the bench.

Yes - but he'll never be quick enough to catch Chung the Road Runner off side. He's only ever caught him once and that was when Chung gave him an Acme Earthquake Pill and within 30 seconds Coyote exploded.

I can see Coyote waving a red card at Chung out of spite, but it won't count. It'll turn out he waved the flag at a smokey image of Chung made in the dust as he sped through it.

Agree with this. Nigel said he a few niggles when he arrived and I think that showed in the last game. I would start with Lee unless Sharp has shaken off his niggles completely.

I also recall when Jonathan Forte came on as sub and scored two quick goals against MK Dons but wasn't picked to start the next game. I think this affected his confidence and he didn't do much after that.

We need to win this one. Forget the historical results they mean nothing. Time chalk up an away win. COYR.

I may be the wrong person to say this and don't get me wrong or take it the wrong way, but you are both wrong.

We should start with Chung, make an early impact, get well-ahead, demoralise the opposition and the home crowd and then bring Billy on to consolidate.

To prevent Billy from dwelling on any disappointment at not starting, I'd explain that it's a diamond with a flaw versus a perfect saphire situation - and then add "Billy, I really need you to think about this simple truth: no matter where you go - there you are."

By the time Billy has really chewed on this matter and got himself in a right good mood as a result, we'll be three up and it'll be time to bring him on.

Good debate about lee or sharp,I agree with one poster that sharp doesnt look at the level of fitness the rest of the squad are at,but...he will score goals for fun when ready and the quickest way to get him there is to play him. lee could turn out to be as good a signing as Chaplow, and will play his part in the promotion push.
In my humble opinion I would start with Sharp.

Start Lee. These lowly sides tend to squeeze up and stop us from playing our passing game. Dropping long diagonal balls over their defence with scare them shytless and they won't dare push up. With two on RL and two marking Lee there will be a nice big gap in the middle for Corky to score! After we are 3-0 up take a midfielder off and bring on Billy to get 2 more. Go for it Nigel!! It's a difficult one. Lee has earned a start for sure. But if the starting 11 are struggling and we need to bring on an impact sub then Lee is going to have more impact than Sharp because of his pace. So many of our earlier wins came from great substitutions. The injuries led to a bad run but not so much because of their impact on the starting line up more because of having weak benches.

It's brilliant to have choices now. Connelly is aging and injury prone and Barnard was unlucky to never get the chance to show if he could or couldn't at this level. I doubt they will be with us next season but either way I wish them both well. The squad is too big now.

That's my point, the squad is too big. We need strength in depth but it still needs pruning. De Ridder was very much one usually better off the bench than starting.

I think members of the squad know who are and are not good enough. Which ever league we are in, the squad is still going to need improving and players will not want to be passengers. We have too many right midfielders and not enough natural left ones.

Again more important not to lose tomorrow, if we play without fear we will get the win. Will be hard I think to beat their keeper, saying that I predict a similar result as at Ipswich.

Pretty happy with Nigel's pick who starts with Rickie but we are learning how starts are earned in every level Saints team... so Lee should start and hopefully Billy will be on in the second half.. I understood Billy took a knock early in the Derby game? He'll come right and be knocking them in for Saints soon. Great to have choices and fun reason debate. I really like both but do think Chung has the touch of class the stuff of higher leagues... Give them both time.
Punch Knight Rider Guly or Chappers on the right wing and I don't think anyone would moan too much so long as Adam works his magic on the left.... good innit. Roll on NZ4am.. can't wait!! COYR have a great trip Saints Fans.. we'll be listening to ya down under.

No arguing that away we have just not done it and if Lee plays he would need the midfield to create from the possession they have (rather than lose the ball in the final third). Every game is now massive and West Ham and Brum showed what has to be done mdo weekk. We cannot afford players who perform at home but cannot raise their game away.

That's a good point and I'm sure Nigel will consider it, but does it means he'll play him or will leave him out? More likely play him, I think, knowing that Billy might be needed in reserve for next month.

We have 18 points from 15 away games if you project that average over a whole season that's 27.6 Add that to what should be 19 wins &2 draws at home thats an auto promotion spot So how come people think we are rubbish away?

I personally think all this cliche talk about "Impact subs" is a load of twaddle. I expect Messi would make an impact from off the bench. But you wouldn't start him there just because of that, would you? It's like the "not interfering with play" nonsense. Say it enough times and it becomes true.Or "It's more difficult to play against 10". OK then pick 10 to start, like GHK does.
