Steve De Ridder ‘gutted’ at late leveller from Ipswich

Steve De Ridder Steve De Ridder

STEVE DE Ridder admitted he was “gutted” by Ipswich Town’s late equaliser.

The Saints sub made an instant impact after coming on, providing the assist for Rickie Lambert to open the scoring in only his second league appearance of 2012.

But 11 minutes later he watched in horror as Jason Scotland’s deflected strike beat Kelvin Davis.

It was the first goal Davis had conceded in four Championship matches.

De Ridder said: “It was from a ball into the channel that looked harmless enough but he (Scotland) cut in, it deflected and disappeared behind Kelvin.

“We’re gutted about it. We just had to close him down faster.

“Three points would have been important but we need to keep pushing on and not look behind us.

“We have one common goal – to get to the Prem.”

De Ridder has gained a reputation as a super sub this term.

Last night he provided much-needed width with the contest heading for stalemate.

“The gaffer told me to do my own thing and make some things happen,” he said.

“I guess I did. I took on my opponents and of course Rickie proved himself again.

“As a winger it’s special to have a player like that in the team. I just put the ball in there and he gets on the end of it. Amazing.”

Related links

De Ridder is now hoping for another chance to show what he can do at home to Barnsley on Saturday.

“I’m a player who wants to play every week and I think I grabbed the opportunity to prove myself again – but I need to keep improving,” he added.

I'm especially gutted since, according to the mathematical formula developed by the Professor of Moaning at Whinge University, with the benefit of hindsight, fully adjusted for retrospective vision, we would now have 105 points in the bag.

Frustratingly, I expect Nigel will continue to operate using the far less reliable foresight method.

IMO Steve is a great impact player.

Guly can be very frustrating for the Manager and the fans and can lose the ball in possession
(I'm sure that can be worked on in Training) - but he does have the calibre to get goals as he is unpredictable.

Last night (in some ways) was no different to my visit to Portman Road. Saints went into the lead and got pegged back.
Missing last night were GOALS from SAINTS to snuff out ipswich and we definitely had our chances first half.

It's no good dominating and having possession if we don't hit the back of the net .....

I wasn't sure so I've made a point on occasions of following Gully rather than the ball, he puts a full shift in and he's got a football brain - often not read by some lesser team mates. Try it, you'll be pleasantly surprised.

The Leeds victory was awesome but it obviously took its toll, last night was a bit flat. Having said that we created enough chances to put the game to bed. At 1-0 Rickie had a golden opportunity which would have finished them off.

Guly was arguably our best midfield player last night. He was the only one i saw making any tackles in midfield. He also got forward to nearly break the deadlock in the second half. The rest in midfield were poor to say the least. Hammond was well off the pace. Why we cant keep posession i cant understand. How many time did we just kick it up field or out of play ? Exactly like the Leeds game, no composure no one to play the ball. Puncheon would have been much better than hammond for this alone. We were poor for most of the game but were given the lifeline we needed but yet coulnt defend a long ball to the corner flag. Saints tuffen up quickly.

Completely agree. I think it's time for Adkins to get tough tbh. This squad rotation doesn't work if all the players aren't on a par. Surely we need our best 11 starting every game now?

Puncheon has great ability and needs to be playing, it's great when you see Lallana and Punch switching wings throughout the game! And Richard Chaplow, he's the best centre midfield player we have got. I don't understand why he isn't played there? He can boss the middle, he's a strong tackler, a great passer and he makes things happen (that's what I think we're missing at the moment).

Regards the guly debate,NA picks him on what he sees in training and knows him far better than probably any of us will,He tucks in when NA goes to a system to try and get a grip on the game,he,s just following instructions,so cant be knocked for that.
But de ridder is a more attacking option and I think is more than just an impact player,as he is described,I would do it the other way round.
Lee is outstanding and worth his place easily,Im slightly baffled why billy sharp isnt able to oust him though, perhaps his fitness levels arent quite there, again NA knows better than anyone.
I cant see this ,at this stage of the season any other way than 2 points dropped, and agree with some above posters who say, play the strongest 11 every week,

I'm not worried about any other team ,.. we are better than all of them in this league....

Maybe a touch of wishful thinking in there, but I have a feeling that as Reading get closer they will start to feel more pressure too - and it wouldn't surprise me at all if they hit a lean spell soon. 1-0 at home to the Skates was hardly inspiring.

If just one of our many other chances had gone in last night - or Scotland's late effort hadn't been deflected - we'd be happy today. Such small margins make the difference between being satisfied and being gutted - but they don't make any rational difference between being judged a good or a rubbish side on the night.

We had a lot of luck on Saturday and very little last night. That's often how it goes.
But I'd have been reasonably happy to settle for four points beforehand.

I hope you gave your Buddha a good kicking when you got home.
Spookily enough, I didn't rub him yesterday as I was running late owing to a missing cat issue - so Buddha's off the hook on that one. But I did change my travel route - down West Quay Road rather than the lucky through the town access - and thought unsettling thoughts about this en route.
Nonetheless we lost two home games on the trot a while ago after rubbing Buddha and we won loads of matches last year after using the unlucky West Quay route.
I just hope we get promoted before supporting this football club gets me certified. This Saints thing is definitely sending me doolally and for whatever reason trying to win promotions seems to be even harder on the nerves than it was when trying to escape relegations.

The likelihood that Buddha is actually affecting our match results is approx 12,678,987,665,385,9
76,395,678,455,789,3
45,677, to 1. Obviously too high to be worth risking. Buddha gets rubbed on Saturday.

KINSLAND NORTH AND THE NORTHAM PACKED'EM IN LAST NIGHT - COS THAT'S WHERE IT'S AT. (And everyone knows that !! - other sections of the ground there are empty seats.

Whose up for Millwall Away - now that 1,000 Additional Tickets are up for sale ???

No-one is promoting violence on these forums but there is one thing that is certainly true .....

millwall and their supporters take it up the a*rse !!!

KINSLAND NORTH AND THE NORTHAM PACKED'EM IN LAST NIGHT - COS THAT'S WHERE IT'S AT.

SHOULD READ = KINGSLAND NORTH.

WE ARE THE MIGHTY SOUTHAMPTON.

There are fewer posters today as quite a few fans are shell-shocked after the late ipswich goal.

I SAY - HEADS UP. FIGHT ON.

RED ARRRRRRRRRRMY.
Red why did the fans stop singing in the last 20? One minute the stadium was full of Saintly sound as usual but as Ipswich started their spell it stopped.. then when they scored Ipswich fans filled the stadium with that chant I shall not repeat... I think it's a game to learn from for everyone. Positive things will result. We will win this league.
Last Night - after a great first half and the GOAL in the second half - some players were not looking where they were passing the ball and lots of fans got tense as ipswich started to get on top.

NO TEAM WINS THE CHAMPIONSHIP WITHOUT A FIGHT.

It is more than mental strength that is required.

Nigel needs to get the Team Selection right and the substitutions need to be spot on to get WIN-WIN-WIN.

We have the Quality.

LET'S DO THIS AND CLAIM TOP SPOT IN THE LEAGUE AT THE END OF THE SEASON.

WE ARE THE MIGHTY SOUTHAMPTON.

RED ARMY. FIGHT FOR PREMIERSHIP FOOTBALL. COYR.

Saints might give this Barca team a run for their money ;)

Yes, but if they start next season still in Admin, or out of Admin and no CVA in place for the sexond lot of debt, which is the only way BC can take the club over again, then they get another minus 10 on top of the first minus 10, making minus 20, very chilly indeed

How come you never offered this to Saints, Leeds, Luton and Plymouth when they got into trouble like the skates??????

By the time we play Reading they will have slipped away a bit. 7 wins in a row up to now, but that will end very shortly.

Nigel Adkins memorably once stated that an average of 2 points per game will see us up.

That is still the case.

Adkins is right.

As always.

I don't give a flying fig for any other team. Look up not down .. oh yes !!.. there isnt anyone above us !!

I'm not worried about any other team ,.. we are better than all of them in this league....

It's down to us now ... 11 games left .. 22 points if we stay on the Adkins diet..but we can do better than that .... and then the cost of going to football will increase dramatically for all of us ...

Calmness !!
Nothing too original in what Adkins was saying. Bill Shankly's Liverpool used to concentrate on winning at Anfield and drawing away, knowing that the First Division title would then be theirs. Italian newspapers have always taken up this theme, and add to their published league tables by working out the "Media Inglese" (English Theory) using the same idea.

Great results last night. I'm not panicing yet. 33-points up for grabs...22 will see us up! 7-wins and a draw. 5-wins and 6-draws might be enough if we beat Reading.
This is so doable!

Three very important Championship games this week each with a late vital goal. If nothing else it proves that you must concentrate until the fat lady sings.

What, the one on the mobility scooter outside Krap Nottarf?

She's been singing through 3 administrations over the last 14 years & still the Football League are daft enough to give them money!

Perhaps she is delivering the money in the little panier on the front of her scooter. Would account for her being there.
