Lallana at the double for Saints Lallana at the double for Saints

Adam Lallana scored a goal in each half as Saints strengthened their promotion credentials today.

Lallana broke the deadlock in the 36th minute, driving in the opener from Rickie Lambert's knockdown.

And he secured the points in the 54th minute following excellent work from Tadanari Lee.

West Ham's failure to win at home to Doncaster completed an excellent afternoon.

Wet Spam drop points, it's looking better & better. The Reading home game could be the promotion decider.

Reading play their game in hand against Donny this week.
Then we will see exactly where we are.
goal difference of ours is going to keep us top, but it will be the team that blinks that slips from there until the end of the season.
Wet Spam are not going away, there will be a 3 way race to the end.
Boro,Brighton,Brum,B
pool Cardiff +Hull will fight it out for the other 3 places, we do not want to be among them at the end.
Hate the thought of playoffs. At the beginning of the season that would have been a dream. Now, after what we have achieved this season it would be a nightmare !

Great day.

If only Big Sam had Rickie ..... oh, and Adam ..... oh, and Tad Lee ..... oh, and Spiderman ...... oh, and Guly ..... But he hasn't, poor thing!

I've been able to log into Player today. I know the commentry isn't perfect but they said that Guly was being shifted into various positions, as and when the substitutions were made AND was playing well. I think his work won the corner which eventually led to the first goal, didn't it?

Yet, on Solent, there are STILL people moaning about him.

It seems to me that, alongside his work rate and skill level (and, yes, his frustrating moments, too), one thing he offers is flexibility. Anyone remember Manny Andrewzeski? A different player but one who could shift roles during a game depending on the need.

It gives NA the chance to, for example, bring off Rickie and bring on a midfielder without much disruption. Then bring on a striker like Sharp and take off a midfielder.

That's a good point - expectations have risen so quickly over the last 7 months, let alone since starting League 1 on minus 10 points 2.5 years ago, & even just 1.5 years ago being 21st in League 1 when Nige arrived.

Just look at what has been achieved in such a short space of time, how our stock & standing in the game has risen & how our reputation has us known around the country for being a well run club playing great football.

Stay behind the team, back them to the hilt in these last 10 games & be proud to be a Saint!

WE ARE GOING UP!!!!

Any sensible person would just be celebrating a good result and a good league position.
You really must do something about that chip on your shoulder with Brighton, and the childish homophobic, very boring, very repetitive, and small mined language.
At least try to think of something more original. This is 2012 now mate, not 1977.

What impressed me was that the substitutions that normally kill the game simply led to great interplay between the players who came on - Guly led the line after Lambert went off and Connolly and Sharp looked hungry. The sort of 2-0 thrashing you see in the premier. I think the away fans must have diverted at the Watford gap or its hard oop North

Made hartd work of it at times not helped by an over fussy ref, I wish our mid-field would pick up on Lee's runs far more earlier! His positional play was superb but was not getting the ball, his hard work brought us our second and he is an absolute steal............

West Ham dropping points has helped our cause but Reading are breathing down all our necks, it's going to be close but provided we concentrate on our own games and grind out the results we will be fine! COYR's! FOP! :o)

HI I'm a Brighton fan and was at the match today. I wanted to say what great support you have and I truly hope you still have a football club to follow next season. Supporters like you do not deserve what is happening at your club. I was also disgusted at the club stewards today who ejected your No 1 fan because he was ringing his bell. They nearly started trouble where there wasn't any today. I hope we see you back at the Amex again soon

a) The looney (No 1 = only) was ejected at last

b) Brian is suffering from a very sad illness

I thought we were lucky to be one up in the first half, however I think this made up pretty well for the Ipswich game where we should have been 3-0 up by half time, which guess made up for the Leeds game. All swings in round about and all that!

We were very good in the second half. Highlight for me was Tadanari Lee and his superb run and assist!

Glad to see Lallana grab a couple of goals as he has missed a few recently. Fox showed why he is first choice (I hate to say it as I like Harding but feel he may have gone as far as he can). Guly played well and it was nice to hear Merrington say a few words in his support afterwards. We should be getting behind our players.

Looking like we have an excellent chance of going up! Keep it up and COYRS! PLOR!

1st half Fox and Adam teamed up well to give width on the left but Guly played too narrow for offering a wide right attacking option and it was too much for FR to go solo. Reckon this was the source of frustration amongst fans and Radio Solent callers. However 2nd half it appeared NA wanted Guly to take up a variety of different midfield roles and he worked really hard and was effective. When he went up front later in the game he seemed to be much happier and put in a decent shift. Perhaps some commentors (unfairly) focussed on one part of his performance rather than the whole. I have no doubt that if any player does not do the role NA assigns him then their number will come up on the electronic board, and maybe some moaners should consider that before castigating one of our own. Re the 1st goal brilliant work by Ricky to pick out Adam, and a superb control and finish. 2nd goal outstanding play by Lee and again Adam picked out. Best 3 players on the pitch were subbed and received terrific ovations but Guly was not far behind them. As for Manny yes I remember him and he did so much (underappreciated) good for the team....bit like the outstanding Chris Marsden. Successful Saints teams needed players like Manny, Chris and (dare I say it) Guly and Saints best managers have always known it. It is a team game and today Guly played a team game so imho criticism is unwarranted. PS T-Shirt, Shorts and Sandals today...and obviously getting too hot for the Hammers!

Poor first half. Great second half. Guly far better up front than on the right (ish) of mid field. Two of the goals scored out of the last three have been cut backs from the bye line. Why don't we try to get there more often? Especially early in the game.

Thanks for that. A really helpful post. It's hard to tell from here and I only get to a few games a season.

I'm biased because I saw Guly at Coventry (motm) and Reading, where his moment of skill won the ball from a throw and picked out De Ridder for the goal....... one that may (and does at present) keep us above Reading come the season end.

Yes, the grafters are often overlooked, but Marsden did get the plaudits he deserved.

Yes, it's a team game..... at Watford, it was Rickie, at Leeds, Davies, today, I suppose Lallana and, least we forget it, last season against MK Dons, Johnny boy Forte, who baged a few for Notts County today. Well done him.

My money's on Hammond to play a blinder next week at the New Den. He's due a goal.

Special praise today for NA who raised some eyebrows with his substitutions but all of them worked.

Back from the game now, great to get 3 points and good atmosphere in the 2nd half. Stadium was starting to sound like upton park after 25 minutes, and the players did not get any better with the crowd anxiety. Especially bad were some of the comments around 30 min when hammond mistimed one interception. This is when we should be lifting the team or we will end up getting results like west ham at home. First 30 mins today were awful, we are lucky to have someone like Ricky and Adam to create a goal out of nothing because it relieved alot of tension and once we were 1-0 up it was one way traffic and we never looked back. On another note, any London based saints going to hull?

Get her to invite a mate round. I'm on a roll and it would be good to combine it with an away day. Bit of a six pointer.
Puppy, you should charge the mean old (Seedy) bugg€r for his bed (or sofa) and put the profit in Bill's charity tin. 50% surcharge for a full English!!

btw, either of you doing Blackpool? I have the train tickets, I just need the match tickets now.
Staying in Blackpool with Bill and some of my northern mates. Going to be messy. Just like Puppy's sofa.
See you there.
Maybe, as a special favour for you Mack, Seedhouse could ask NA to get the boys to score at Blackpool from a corner.

There are a few of us London Saints going up to Hull. We're on the 11.35 from Kings Cross and I think the 10.05 back the next day. My work mates can't believe I've taken 2 days off work to go to bloody Hull!!
There's about 40 of us going up to Blackpool and all booked into the same hotel. Should be a good crac. Interesting piece in yesterday's programme about Jimmy Melia and how Saints fans in the 60's did not understand the midfielder's role and used to give him stick. Saints fans know their strikers, crossers of the ball and doughty defenders, but there seems to be a traditional cultural gap for understanding midfielders. Is this why some are giving Guly stick? On the midfield note won't it be great when all players get up to speed with Tadanari's clever running of the ball and anticipate where he will be. One or two missed it yesterday. Think Leesan was the signing of the year. Rip up those defences Tadinari! ONWARDS and UPWARDS.

Not in the second half of the game I was watching, Guly was pivotal and spraying one touch passes around, lost count the number of passes in a couple of moves which had DM drooling "this is like a training routine" so who is right? Yes Lee is a live wire, too quick for the Lino on several occasions and got flagged more often than Papa Waigo, just a matter of time and timing.

Millwall form is definitely a mixed bag, totally unpredictable.
Saints on current form should batter them, but we all know that football doesn't work that way.
So Nigel is going to need to drill the team to score early and continue to smash them at every oppurtunity, because if they are shown any mercy early on they will be encouraged and make a game of it.
Do not want a game, I want an annihilation !!
After Tuesday, when we must expect Reading to win, it will be goal difference until the first team blinks.

some round me saying same about lee always in offside position, thing is its all about pass timing if he stands shoulder to shoulder centre back just steps up and end result midfield is compressed, if he is behind centre back he makes run when expecting pass to be played thus defender has to be aware of whats going on in opposite directions not easy, tad looks good at it too

One of my favourite anorak sites is the Guardian football stats.
Spent the last half hour working out what would happen if everything went acccording to statistics and we are going to win the league.
Next week against Millwall.
Our average first goal is the 29th minute till the 40th.
Millwall average first goal conceded is 39th minute.
Go to the bookies and bet on Ricky in the 35 to 45 minute for 1 st goal.

more anorak stuff....
if Saints are winning at half time they win.
if Millwall are losing at half time they lose.
Saints have the 4th best defence and 5th best attack away.
Millwall have the 5th worst attack at home, no data on their defence rating but a goal diff of -4 suggests they are not that good.
Smash them.

In the first half I remmeber it kind of differently. He was there defensively when we needed him making some pretty important interceptions and tackles. He passed to his team mates, some clever flicks forwards (Some which came off some which did not), sometimes boinking it back to the player who gave it to him, by and large keeping posession and control of the football. He drifted into the box and wide, got fouled a few times in important places leading to dangerous free kicks. He was not a shining beacon of godly light in the first half but the way I remember it he supported his team, did the job the gaffer asked of him and put a pretty good shift in. The only time I remember him falling over where the ref waved it away was in the second half in front of the Northam End. He looked for the free kick, can't really blame him or Lallana the other day when he was booked for diving.

Considering other wasteful play going on in the first 35 minutes (Including one particularly woeful lateral pass from Sir Lambert), to criticise Guly for sometimes putting his hands on hips is a bit dispraportionate. From what I can tell they all tend to do it from time to time in particular Mr. Lee. I don't really see this as a sign that he does not know what he is doing.

I agree he was very good second half.

A few posters seem to think Gully is a waste of space but , not in my opion. Is it ten goals he has scored this season from playing out of position. I wonder how many he would of scored playing in his natural position ?.
I dont think playing wide right is where he wants to be more like in the hole behind the front two. He has a quick eye for a first time pass and links up play between midfield and front two.
Yes he does at times look slow and not doing much, but did you ever see LeTis running round like a race horse. If there was a poll on Gully wether he was an asset or liability i would vote asset, anyone else care to join in.
great three points , win all our home games and i dont think we will need much on the road but three points next Saturday day would be muddy barvelous.

Guly is an asset. Assists, goals, and a goal line clearance against Derby and West Ham as well as decent all round performances fornthe most part wherever he is asked to play. Strasbourg Saint already mentioned his assist in
the Reading game which was
genius. nobody is perfect ans nor is Guly but I feel he's unfairly picked on.

Do Prado is an easy target...he is gangly and can have the appearance of a lazy player. However, for me, he works hard and has provided us with loads more positves than negatives this year. The stats do not lie. I only hope he gets a 30yd screamer whilst I'm sat next to one of the so called "Guly bashers" (ps Guly bashing just sounds wrong to me).

But you can't keep blaming him just because we have a 'toothless' midfield !! That's where the real problem could be when playing better teams !!!
Judging by your comments I am not sure you are on the same wavelength as most of us, you have to admit your comments, however you may think are constructive, are actually very negative and show not a little ignorance of the game overall, in my opinion of course, I would just ask you for a while to think and post positives, if it does go wrong you can have a field day if that is what makes you happy.
I think you are getting my comments wrong mate!! I wasn't and would not 'slag' the team off - I was just sticking up for Guly, cos it gets a bit boring reading all the negative comments on here about him, when he is just doing what Nigel wants him to do!!
With regards to my comment about the midfield I am entitled to my opinion and it was not negative - cos we all know if Chaplow is fit Nigel won't start with Morgan and Hammond - cos they are not his first choice pairing!!!
I say it as I see it too and yesterday Lee made some great runs and all it wanted was a positive ball from the midfield and he would have been through on a number of occasions - but they just don't play those type of positive passes quick enough before the run is snuffed out!!
Not negative comments but just my take on things!! I pay my money every week and don't stand in the crowd verbally abusing some of our players like a lot of them around me do!!!

There are a few of us London Saints going up to Hull. We're on the 11.35 from Kings Cross and I think the 10.05 back the next day. My work mates can't believe I've taken 2 days off work to go to bloody Hull!!
There's about 40 of us going up to Blackpool and all booked into the same hotel. Should be a good crac. Where's this Titty Bar everyones going on about? surely you can't take kids in there!Last time I was up there I saw a place advertising naked mud wrestling, now that sounds interesting provided it's not 2 blokes of course!!! See you at Millwall, Borough Market before and after the game.
Very impressed with the comittment, I will have to see if I can pull something similar off. Will make sure to get to Borough Market then on Saturday. Do you have a place online where you organize these trips out of London?

Yep, naturally, I'm with you all.

From what I've seen (limited I know), he's become an asset; and I speak as one who, at the Cherries (still a wee bit of a silly name) match last season, when he was playing for a contract remarked that he hadn't yet convinced me......

..... then he changed that match and has done a hell of a lot more right than wrong since then.

I think Bob's right, he's probably more natural in behind the strikers (that does sound almost as wrong as 'Guly bashing' though).

St.Yorkie wrote: Yesterday Guly at times was sttod with his hands on his hips - he looked totally lost! Change formation and push him forward different layer. Lee and Guly in the same side don't work. Lee is very clever and fast but our midfield take forever to pass it to him...he's always checking his runs. Eventually the midfield won't control it and look up - they'll hit it first time...he will be lethal. Only problem is who can keep up with him?
Not in the second half of the game I was watching, Guly was pivotal and spraying one touch passes around, lost count the number of passes in a couple of moves which had DM drooling "this is like a training routine" so who is right? Yes Lee is a live wire, too quick for the Lino on several occasions and got flagged more often than Papa Waigo, just a matter of time and timing.
Something happened after Lee and Lallana went off...Guly suddenly started imposing himself. In the first half in front of The Chapel - he fell over, sauntered around, and was right off the pace. Something dramatic changed once the substitutions started. I like Guly - but we need to play to his strengths...like Lee!

Well said !!

Some times fans need to do things without the club financially contributing. NC is doing an amazing job but definitely exhibits a touch of the control freak from time to time and as the club paid a chunk of the costs he obviously sees it as a club flag.

Fair comment Andy...except for one thing... Chaplow is fit (at least he himself seems to think so on twitter)...NA has chosen to drop him from the last two games.
Ok I will re -phrase that then. When Chaplow is fit AND back to his best (which judging by the last couple of run outs he clearly isn't) then I think he would be Nigels first choice in midfield.
