Saints take advantage as promotion rivals slip Saints take advantage as promotion rivals slip

SAINTS did their hopes of promotion to the Barclays Premier League no harm tonight with a hard-fought 2-0 victory at Hull.

Jack Hobbs' own goal and a second half Jos Hooiveld effort proved the difference at the KC Stadium as the npower Championship leaders made the most of promotion rivals Reading and West Ham squandering points.

While Southampton are now unbeaten in 11 league matches, it was a predictably tight encounter between the second tier's tightest defence and top scorers.

Hull came into the match on an 11-game unbeaten run of their own, but that looked under threat from the outset.

Having made two impressive early saves, Vito Mannone had to pick the ball out of his own net after just 14 minutes when Hobbs directed a Danny Fox cross into his own goal.

Adam Lallana wasted a good chance to extend Saints' advantage moments later, before Josh King hit the bar at the other end and Robbie Brady fired over with the goal gaping.

Hull were made to pay for their wastefulness in the 59th minute when Jose Fonte crossed for fellow centre-back Jos Hooiveld to net his sixth goal of the season and wrap up victory.

It was Southampton that started the brightest at the KC Stadium, with Rickie Lambert forcing Mannone into action after eight minutes.

Related links

The Hull goalkeeper stopped the striker's header with ease and was forced into action again moments later to prevent a Lallana effort sneaking home.

King forced Davis into a superb one-handed save as Hull voyaged forward, although they were soon picking the ball out of their own net.

Left-back Fox fired a low driven ball across the six-yard box and Hobbs turned into his own net under pressure from Lambert.

Moments later Southampton should have doubled their advantage, although Lallana was guilty of fluffing his lines after rounding Mannone.

The chances seemed to spark Hull into life as they dominated proceedings for the remainder of the first period.

Manchester United loanee King hit the crossbar with a well-struck half-volley in the 25th minute, before Hobbs missed the chance to make amends for his earlier mishap by heading wide from a corner.

City continued to press for a leveller that should have come in the 35th minute through Brady, who somehow blazed over when it looked easier to score from a nicely-weighted King cross.

The Tigers again came close as half-time approached after slight hesitancy at the back, but Fonte redeemed himself to block a Robert Koren effort.

Hull boss Nick Barmby replaced the former Slovenia international with Aaron Mclean in a bid to freshen up his attack.

The alteration failed to bring about the change City had hoped for, though, as Southampton's centre-backs conjured up their second goal of the evening in the 59th minute.

Fonte found himself in an unusually attacking position on the right flank and delivered a cross that defensive partner Hooiveld converted from close range.

There was a rather subdued atmosphere in the KC Stadium as Hull struggled to penetrate the visitors' defence.

Barmby's man rallied in the final 10 minutes - with Davis producing superb saves to thwart King, Tom Cairney and Cameron Stewart - but Southampton did enough to hold out for three points.

Tonight's was a really tough match. Even the best Saints teams from the last 30 odd years would have struggled with that type of game. We have to hand it to NA who has now helped the lads to 4 away wins in a row.

The reaction on here has been a joy tonight. Not gloating or arrogance; just elation. At the end of the season I think Mar. 20th will be seen as the date we started to really believe........COYR

What really annoys me is that on Skysports News, they were good enough to show the goals already, but got the facts so badly wrong, quoting that it was Lallanas cross that led to the OG, as far as I know it was Fox. They went on to say the second was by Hooiveld who is on loan from Celtic! They couldn't give a toss about us really, we must be annoying a lot of people because we are doing so well. Don't care really the futures bright, it's red and white.

I reckon, regardless of the source, at least the article is accurate. Ospreysaint is right. if you relied on breaking news from Sky Sports you would quite happily think Lallana set up the own goal and Jos is still on loan from Celtic. The Echo may not be perfect, but it is nice to have a local rag who put Saints first and we know we will get a double page spread with good picture, stats and some debatable editorial opinion on the game and Saints in general tommorow!

I'd like to see Brighton extend the run and take a shock second. Unlikely but on emerging form it's not unthinkable.

But a one-two finish for proper south coast clubs would be an amazing end to the year, and set the record straight after finishing second to them in league one.

I confess, I missed Dave M's comment because I was absent this evening helping to run a quiz night at The Dubliners.

Last question in the sports section was: What happened for the first time at the 2003 FA Cup Final?
a) the wrong team won
b) neither side fielded a British player
c) it was played indoors
d) someone missed a penalty during the match.

I think we all know the answer, although a might have counted, too.

As for the match, I've just been catching up on all the threads and seems you've made a new friend.

Like other overseas fans have said, Osprey, we appreciate your updates even if we're able to find out elsewhere. Sometimes we're a tad remote and your updates are all we have. Keep 'em coming, we need them ....

It could have been very different if they didn't miss a first half sitter, but we seem to have changed gear from free scoring and flowing passing to winning effectively. It's maybe not as pretty to watch but it's precisely what we need right now. It's hard to see us not getting automatic promotion and, for that matter, winning the league. 2;What is the first team you would like to see at St Marys next season?

3;Who would you like to see go up 'With us'?

4;How do you think we will far next season?

5;Concidering what the situation was when he took over as Chairman and the tragic reasons, how do you think 'Mr Cortise has done these passed few seasons.

'Thank you everybody at Saints(thats from the Chairman right down to the ball boy), you have gave us back a team that everybody is talking about in football, I am so proud of the Saints like back in the 60's and so on.

Cork and spiderman have premier class and IMO both will play international level. I feel they could do with an older head in there at times, who has the experience to take the sting out of the game. We are now solid at the back and kelvin is playing out of his skin not that I've always been an admirer of him. I'm not thinking about that until June. If we get promotion then I'm making May an official month of celebration for all the amazing achievements of Nicola and Nigel in dragging us from the gutter to the stars. Only after we've thoroughly enjoyed the moment should we start looking forward.

What a superb night last night with all the results that came in. I would've been happy with a point up at Hull but the boys did us proud and as many have said on this thread...that was a really professional performance.
Knew that West Ham would do their usual, but Brum and Reading??? It's the presure of being at the top, isn't it?!?

"It's so nice that the gaffer does the pre match and the debrief with us because we know a little bit about what to expect, what they're good at and what they want to do, where their dangers are etc. It's always nice to know what to expect, and I think we handled it well today."

Great result last night and another 3 points in the bag.I'd forecasted a draw but a truly professional display while others crumbled around us! if Reading continue their current form of 2.17 points per game (but they've got to play us!) that's 18 more points finishing on 88 points. With our goal difference, 13 points should get us to the promised land.... and breathe......

There'll be smiles on thousands of faces once again in and around Southampton today - and around the world too amongst all those exiled Saints.

It'd be nice to think that that big Markus Liebherr smile we all saw at Wembley is beaming down too.

Of course, no-one knows if this is the case, but I like to think the provision Markus left the club, which the family have honoured to the full, was rather like a cutting taken from a tree before it fell. That cutting is now thriving at St Marys - and in full blossom this Spring. And through the sound and sensible management structure it was so wisely planted in, it really is proving to be a chip off the old block.

What a difference that one man made to us many thousands!

There is just an air of positivity here now, no slagging off players and optimism for the future.
Since ML saved our great Club from the Ashes it has been nothing but forward gear back to where we belong.

As I came though the office someone said "and how about that leeds game! wow 7-3. Can't believe that" to which I said "oh FFS that Warnock is going to be smiling like a cheshire". Everyone looked at me and just said you haven't seen have you? I have since and also seen pompeys result! these coupled with the three results at the top are probably the best for month and months! .
West Ham on the other hand have a steady run it which I'm sure they will draw a couple here and there and maybe lose one. .

I still think based on the last 8 games WH will get Auto with us and Reading will fall slightly by the wayside.

I believe the poster ref. Jack Cork was being ironic, in response to Sky Sports News saying that The Hoover is on loan from Celtic!

With regard to Player of the season, IMHO it's between Kelv, Rickie & The Hoover.

It was me that posted it. Yes, my tongue was firmly in my cheek. It was, as you say Rob, following Sky's ill-informed comment that Jos was on loan from some bunch of Catholics north of the border.

However, ACP, I totally agree about Jos. Another bargain and, if it wasn't for Rickie, I'd vote him Player of the Season.

West Ham simply blew it against Watford - they couldn't take advantage of what was an easy opportunity to go top and have gone from bad to worse. There is pressure on the top two but even more on the third who will want to avoid the dreaded play off lottery. Readings run was bound to end and Saints form and above all confidence should allow them to come futher clear.
