Sharpshooter Billy fires Saints closer to the Premier League

Sharpshooter Billy fires Saints closer to the Premier League Sharpshooter Billy fires Saints closer to the Premier League

BILLY Sharp struck twice against his former club as Championship leaders Saints took another major step towards promotion with a 2-0 win over Doncaster.

Sharp’s second-half brace means Nigel Adkins’ men are now nine points clear of third-placed West Ham, who drew 2-2 at Burnley.

The Hammers retain a game in hand, and will cash that in when they visit Peterborough on Tuesday night, but the chances of them preventing Saints from making a Premier League return are fast diminishing.

Second-placed Reading continued to cling onto the coattails of Adkins’ side, as their 3-1 win over Blackpool kept them five points behind the leaders.

Sharp delivered the killer blows against relegation-threatened Rovers when he headed in Danny Fox’s 58th minute corner, before pouncing on a Habib Beye error 15 minutes from time to finish the game off.

The only concern for the hosts was Rickie Lambert’s departure early in the second half with an injury.

I thought a Doncaster player stamped on Rickies foot in the first half, but NA said the problem was pelvic and too many games. Also Richardson was not serious either, (Butts has played three games and three clean sheets), I watched Puncheon and Falque being tested before the warm up, and neither seemed to satisfy the trainer about their fitness, they were wearing those monitor gismos that register various items of fitness.

Assuming WH win on Tuesday we would be 6 points ahead with 7 games left. If one assumes that WH win all their next 7 games, for us to win promotion with our goal average, we would have to at least win 5, loose 2 or win 4 draw 3. I really cant see WH winning 7 but I can see us winning 5. COYR

Hope he doesn't! But I'm sure he'll get Championship manager of the season.

Worst score for us today was Liverpool losing. Can't see Dalglish bothering to stay on next season and we know who'll be high on the Daily Mail 'new man for Anfield' list.

But today, we'll be opening a bottle of bubbly, raising a glass to Billy and loving the fact that he'll be enjoying a smile this evening.

SDR is definitely a better impact player than he is a starter.

We could have done with Guly especialy when RL went off .

Mathematically we now need 18 points to guarantee PL next season Realistically 7 will probably do it

Good post but Nigel would be mad to leave this club at this stage in his career.

And anyway who takes over from King kenny would still be stuck with his shocking buys Carroll, Henderson and to a lesser extent Adam and Downing...but Andy Carroll Newcastle must be laughing all the way to the bank for getting 35 million for that donkey.

Pompey Phil, you are a bit of a **** really arn't you. Lets look at your clubs achievements and analyse them.
1939, most teams had players called up for the war, you lot had the Navy team playing for them, 1949/50, most teams had lost their players in the war, your lot had the Navy team playing for them, 2008, most teams played and paid within their means, your lot just took players and refused to pay for them.
Where you are now is about right for a poorly supported club like yours, Pack the Park, you lot couldn't pack a lunchbox.
So, sit back and watch what a proper team can do, and also, we are not 12m in debt, of the total 20 million Markus put into the club, we have paid 14m back, so looking good.
Oh, and one last thing, in 1898 the original Portsmouth was disbanded by the football league for tax evasion, looks like the club who was formed in that back room weeks later is going to go the same way, never learn do they
