Saints had a collective off day as they suffered a 3-0 beating at Blackpool.

Without the injured Rickie Lambert they missed an early penalty with Billy Sharp’s spot kick saved by Matthew Gilks and it went downhill from there.

Stephen Dobbie converted from the spot for Blackpool before getting another from open play while Ian Evatt headed home the third early in the second half.

Despite the disappointment of a comprehensive defeat Saints could at least take solace they still maintained a six point gap to third placed West Ham after they were beaten 4-2 at home by Reading, who moved to within two points of top spot.

its so obv..all we could do was play it sideways as they had everyone flooding forwards and since we had no target man as good as lambo upfront(Sharp was getting handled & guly just wasnt using his head enough) to fight and win the headers from the lobs by our defence, how else could we get it forward besides thumping it out through davis to nowhere special. this is not the mastermind nigel we're used to. First thing for the players on the training ground monday is, address the nerves ! The worst display this season. Not one player performed. Marking, passing, movement, tempo, commitment, none of these were evident. For the third goal what was Schneiderlin doing on the line from the corner ? looked like he ducked away from the ball ? Still.......We can take out this poor performance on the Skates.Bring it ON !

On the IPAD ...

Saints Fans were fantastic and a brilliant turn-out.

We could and should have beaten blackpool as SAINTS are a better footrballing side.

The Team Sheet gave an indication about how the afternoon would unfold .... a second string team sheet and we all knew it would be a difficult afternoon.

No Rickie Lambert who is so good on and off the ball and can convert penalties 100%.

Guly Do Prado up front who is unpredictable and can get a goal out of nowhere - but is no good at battling for the ball in the air and needs a lot more work from the Coaching Staff to keep improving his game ..

No Tadanari Lee ... No Richardson and so with the injuries we fielded a weakened side.

That said if we could have converted the penalty and the Guly Chance went the right side of the post we could have got our noses in front and changed the game.

NOT GOOD ENOUGH - the penalty by Billy Sharp and there are plenty of other Saints Players who would have scored given the chance.

Saints were weak on the wings but in particular Danny Butterfield whose area was exploited again and again and he was also caught out of position which is not good enough. Fox was better but had the same problem and this was an area that blackpool (just an average championship side) made the most of.

SAINTS MUST BE WARY OF THE READING THREAT ON THE WINGS - and Danny Butterfield has to be dropped for that game.

Out of a game we should have won or at worst drawn - we end up on the end of a 3-0 loss which no-one could have predicted.

The second goal blackpool scored kelvin was caught in two minds and stayed on his goal line and I knew we were in trouble. Jose Fonte did not get in a telling tackle and the normally reliable Jos Hooiveld had an off game and should have scored when he had the chance.

blackpool is like a league one ground and that said it is still too big for the supporters. They are a joke and Saints should have put them to the sword - even with a weakened or second string team.

Time to find my way home to the Sunny South and get ready to WIN against pompey who had a drubbing today and get ready for palace to WIN away.

The game against reading will be good and with all our injured players back we will WIN.

RED ARMY. WE GET KNOCKED DOWN AND THEN WE GET STRAIGHT BACK UP AND FIGHT AND WIN.

WE ARE SOUTHAMPTON. COYR.

From the IPAD ..

DROP GULY for the pompey game as he is not strong enough in the air and his weakness can be exploited.

Stop Playing Guly in Away Games in the Forward Position - please learn fron this Nigel.

DROP DANNY BUTTERFIELD - as he is a weak link on the wing.

Lots of mistakes today - but two glaring critical weaknesses exposed.

Plenty of lessons to learn today (Nigel) about the Team.

BILLY SHARP still looks a way off his very best - so surely the best pairing up front is Rickie and Tadanari Lee to start. Last week Billy was hand-fed his goals against Doncaster.

The problem with the pompey game is that they will play spoiling fouling football and may try and take out our best players.

The genius that Nigel showed against Doncaster by playing the League One boys like Barney etc to unlock them ... was undone today by having a limited team choice ..

The Southampton Fans .. 10/10

The Team battled and Nigel showed passion but SAINTS missed Rickie today big time !!

People, IMO, expect too much of Guly.
He's tall, so everyone assumes that he should be a target man for the long ball, yet he has probably never had to play that type of football, in his life, until he came here.
His skills come in receiving the ball to his feet and, again IMO, he was one of our better players.
Should have scored early on, won the penalty and in the 2nd half constantly came short, looking for the ball, because he wasn't receiving any service up front.
We were out thought by Holloway, who seemed to expect us to play the diamond, so he countered it by playing 2 wide players and got the ball to them quickly.
As they said after the game. The last time we lost a league match, we went unbeaten for the next 12.
It's all about desire, now, and there will be no hiding place against Poopey, next week, because they will be running themselves into the ground in order to spoil our promotion charge.
We are top of the league.

The Guly effort and the penalty.

Had those two counted then maybe a different outcome.
Let's say that 'one swallow dosn't make a summer'.
We are still top and the likes of WHU supporters would no doubt change places with us right now.
Saints seem to come back stronger after a 'bad performance so let us all get behind the team for the remaining games.
Its all good when we are churning out the results and playing well, but let's cut out the negativity from some of the posters on here as it seems' you only sing when your winning'

This has to stop!!!

We are Southampton!!! Accept that we have had a bad day at the office, draw a line under the game and move on to the next one whoever it is. We are a great footballing side with great players, however today we were outplayed by a side that worked hard in all areas of the park to earn their side three points.
Coupled by the fact that we had an off day and it makes for the kind of score line we had today.

Mentally for some of you this is the end of our season and we are destined for the play offs. All of you who beleive that are in big sam's words are delusional, today was a freebie, we are no worse or better off than the start of the day, if you beleive in yourselves then anything is possible, that is what Nigel will be telling the players all this week I am sure of it.

I am a football manager and have taken my side from the bottom half of our league to the prospect of winning it for the first time in 50 years because I beleive in them and I let them know that, beleive in saints and they will deliver I promise you that.

It's hard to trust something you have no physical affect on but as I tell my lads you cannot affect the past, however you can have an affect on the future.

Trust in all of your beliefs, It will take you to the promised land.

We have played this diamond formation a lot this season. You would expect that the players would have learned how to play it by now.We just seem to get in each others way, the passes are too short and have to be done very quickly and acurately. We did none of these things today. We were always second best in 50/50 balls. Is there some reason that none of our players ever put in a big tackle to lift the team are they frightened to get booked and potentialy miss a game. I know that tackling seems to frowned on by refs but it has to be done sometimes to lift the team and supporters.
The diamond always seems to us give defensive problems by allowing oposing wingers to attack our fullbacks and as we know they are not positionaly astute or the quickest.
On Saturday we must play 4-4-2
we must fight for every ball.
Pompey took a battering today they will be really up for this one we need to forget about this poor performance today . WE MUST FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT
No capitulation like today.
The supporters will be 12man as they were today . Come on you Saints 110% .

Greetings all, in peace under flag of truce (for tonight at any rate).

A bad day for both of us.

For me the most interesting thing about today was the crowd reaction and noise.

We played a vital relegation game in front of 15,000 - got stuffed 5-1 - and my head is still ringing from the noise generated by the Fratton End.

Blackpool played a vital promotion game in front of 13,000 (??!!), and watching it on TV it was like seeing a game played in a library or cinema - apart from the noise made by your guys (well done - but you could have done with a bit more variety in the songs though).

Anyway, here's to next week's game and may the best team win!

Behaving like very bad losers, it was always on the cards that this would happen, there is no God given right to win every game, we know Hooiveld was getting over a serious attack of flu, so was never going to be at his best, Guly was never going to be match fit after his lay off, we just have to accept that there were a number of factors going against us, their penalty was a soft one, the corner they scored from should have been a goal kick, but these things happen.

If you look carefully at the pre match NA interview on player, you will see that Rickie Lambert in the training shots, was wearing that gismo thingy that monitors his performance, it is usually a clue that the player is being checked over and if he is not right he doesn't play, simple as that.

Totally agree. Bad days happen, I wish they'd not happen when I've made the effort to get there but the boys and I have had a great day out and have learnt to accept that there'll be good days and bad days.

As someone said earlier, this might be no bad thing; a wake-up call at just the right time.

Were the tactics wrong? I'd have had Chappers or Hammond in the middle earlier to counter their aggresive, hard-working midfield but I think there are 4 main reasons why we lost:
1. Blackpool got it right and worked their socks off. Credit where it's due.
2. They got the breaks.
3. We had key injuries/illnesses
4. Other 'minor factors'..... a poor ref who allowed a lot of shoving, kicking and climbing to go unpunished, a poor pitch - the reason for some of the misplaced passes, and we didn't win enough second balls.

Frustrating, yes! So, no better match than the next one in which to take out that frustration.

Can we praise the performance this evening? No it has to be accepted it was bad - fact.

The League position is great - no one is moaning about that as it is beyond expectations. However it also brings with it hopes about the way the team will play - every game.

And surely it must be a concern that we seem unable to cope with a team really determined to harry us and chase us down. Even our back passes were under pressure.

Which Saints player's are able to take control in these circumstances - who can NA rely on to turn things around?

Les Dawson would have summed it up: "Adam Lallana's Aunty Mildred from Manchester and Kelvin Davis's Aunty Ethel from Bolton after a good session on Gin n Tonic wandered down and infiltrated Southampton Dressing Room.

Upon feasting eyes on ample buttock and well toned thigh Mildred turned to Ethel and exclaimed in best Lancastrian accent "By thee 'eck brings back memories of back seat of our first Cortina that does Ethel." Great to see some Saints fans have kept their sense of humour.

FWIW I thought Holloway got it right. Both penalties debatable - if we had scored the outcome would have been no different. Guly missed a chance before the penalty - but Blackpool's width and harrying was our undoing.
Onwards and upwards - still in our hands. Probably given the rest of the chasers hope - perhaps a false sense of security?
We had plenty of possession - but no penetration. Lambo is pivotal in everything we do - his movement and hold up play, first touch are not really appreciated until he isn't playing!
let's start talking about the game next Saturday from now. A bad night at the office - forget and move on!

It was a poor poor performance from Saints. They were all poor but what stood out for me was that Lambert is as indispensible as LeTiss was. We use to say that Saints were a one man team when LeTiss was God, but it's not quite like that now. Lambert does win and hold up the ball, scores and assists. Sharp is a shadow of Lambert. Can't win the ball can't shoot with his left foot, not very effective in link-up play. He is rubbish and should never have been bought. Another bad buy Nigel! He will never make it in the Prem.

what! Yes we did miss lambert any team would, we are no different. But how can you say sharp is another bad buy. I feel Nigel has made some good signings and billy sharp is no exception. You must remember what he has been through this year with injuries and a huge personal loss. He will be pivotal for us next year. But this year he has made a good contribution, especially last week. He had a major injury earlier in the year and I believe that when his fitness is up to the required level we will get the benefit.

COYR.
Great post. We tend to struggle against teams who play direct football. We revert back to type and try to control the game from inside our own half and our back four becomes disconnected with the mid filed and the strikers who get closed down.

We need Lambert and Richardson back then play some long balls from Kelvins hands to the strikers. When we missed the penalty we became predictable and controllable in mid field.

We will be back on track against Pompey and Palace then onto the cup final against Reading. Readings weakness is Harte who can't run. We need to attack down the right flank against them and pin him in his own half.

COYR onwards to victory.

As Nigel says "take one game at a time".
The next game, yes I know it's a local derby and all that, but this will tell us more about the team than anything else.
The last time we were OUTPLAYED by any side this season was back in January at home against Leicester. Since then we went 12 games unbeaten. And I think that made us stronger as a unit.

For what it's worth my take on Adkins is he is a good young manager with potential but not without faults, can be found wanting technically. I would like to see him backed and given time as changing managers is no good for any team. I was slightly miffed at the departure of pardew, who is doing a good job for the toon, without reason. My concern is not of Adkins but of cortese being trigger happy.

NA has stuck to his formula which has worked so far. I am not convinced we can really play away but as three draws is equivalent to one win and two losses you may as well go for it.

Sharp will be OK but it is too soon for him to take on Lambert's role and he was victim of a terrible team performance. On TV you could see he was odds on not to score the penalty and that did his confidence for the rest of the game.

If Lambert is back for the next two games then the Reading game will hopefully decide who will be the Champions. If he is not then both Pompey and Palace (regardless of their own results) will both fancy their chances of some glory seeing the way we played Saturday.

But NA has it right - one game at the time!!! So instead of fretting I am just relaxing knowing the manager, players and supporters will pull us through and take Saints back to where they belong

Give it up with your Pardew love-fest; he's history & long gone. There were obviously good reasons for his sacking or he would have claimed unfair dismissal. Instead, he has kept very quiet - something to hide me thinks?

Adkins has given us the best two seasons in living memory. We play better football than under Pardew & we are top of the league.

He's also weirdly (quite strangely, in fact) obsessed about two people who cancelled their season tickets over car parking prices (dedicated fans, obviously). All of this gives you a good idea of his levels of judgment.

However, whatever you do, don't enter this argument without his permission.

Pardew 7/2 to win manager of the year sacked by cortese reason unknown, 2 season ticket holders lost over parking costs at St Mary's and stadium not sold out all season...... yet. Every thing rosy and saints should go up as champions (fingers crossed) but a few question marks over him if you ask me, this is our club and we have the right to know the truth.
erm, 32,152 for the West Ham (weekday evening) game was a ground record and looked pretty sold out to me...
Apart from west Ham and donny games what have been the attendance figures?
An average of about 26500 I believe, third best in the division.

What's your point?
Stadium capacity is 32000, room for 5500 fans at least, needs improving and you can't afford to turn custom away like the pair that were over parking costs. Just think how much the 5500 would spend on hot dogs and drinks?
Rob don't get involved in unless you read back and then you'll get my point.
Yeah, Rob, you mustn't say anything to this guy unless you read all his back posts so you can put all the negative tripe he spouts into context.

All clubs have this problem. Some season ticket users can't make every match and the seats can't be sold on, sometimes the away team doesn't their quota. We have a 22,500 capacity yet never had that number attending, more like 20,000 plus.

Lmfao, you ask questions when you are already set on the answers. I believe it's my club and I don't need any 1 to hide the truth to protect me. You both jump on others debates without getting full facts, what are your points? Do you have any?

With the greatest respect I don't care about any other teams, and the debate here is over as far as I'm concerned as the point I'm making has been lost.
