Adkins assures fans on Lambert
8:24pm Saturday 31st March 2012 in Saints News
Nigel Adkins is optimistic that star striker Rickie Lambert will be back in the Saints side to face Portsmouth next weekend.
Lambert was missing from the Saints team that were defeated 3-0 by Blackpool at Bloomfield Road after aggravating his groin injury in training on Thursday.
Rumours quickly spread that Lambert had had an operation and would miss the remainder of the season but Adkins killed those off.
“Let’s put that to bed straightaway,” he said. “Somebody made me aware people were saying Rickie has had an operation but Rickie has not had an operation.
“Rumours abound everywhere, he didn’t play today but we were optimistic of him playing but he broke down a little bit in training on Thursday, sufficiently so that he wasn’t fit enough for the game.
“We’re very optimistic he will be fit for the weekend.”
Speaking of the game Adkins added: “You change the shape and I often find that everyone talks about shapes and tactics and whatever but it’s the basics you need to make sure you get right.
“Consistently over the course of the season we have done it very very well and maybe in the first half we didn’t do it as well as we shouldn’t have.”

Yes he will be back but do not take him and Adam off when we're 3-0 up in ten mins just cos we've got palarse away and reading at home in 6 days. Fed up with reasons why we don't do them 25-0.
Anyway, sorry we couldn't find you. We headed for the Working men's club but it was getting close to kick off. I guess we missed you.
Decided to head straight to station afterwards and are now on train over to Bradford.
I'm still around next Saturday, and though we won't be at the match, we might make it into town for a beer before and/or after the 25-0 knock-about at SMS.

One of those days.
If BS had scored the pen! If Jos had netted the header! If the ref hadn't given a few bonus corners to 'pool!
Were we THAT bad? No, just a tad unlucky and second best where it really mattered.
Give 'pool credit for pressing us, working their socks off and taking their chances.
On another day we would have got a lucky win.
My only gripe with tactics is that we failed to win the midfield battle and to do so on that pitch we needed a workhorse in the middle. So, I'd have either shifted Chappers across or brought on Hammond at some point.
Alongside that, the ref was allowing so much pushing, shoving and climbing to go unpunished, which enabled them to take control - hence the need for DH or RC.
On the plus side, the support was fantastic, the hen-night gals around town were depressingly hilarious and we're now on the train out. Every cloud .....

Whatever way you look at things tonight it was a totally inept and hopeless display, was that a top of the table performance,no it was rubbish, can anyone say anything positive about it, not being negative just honest.
Oh! And here's another one. If we don't go up, next season we won't be on telly as often as we would be if we do go up. Given our inability to perform in front of the cameras, that can only be a good thing.

The players will surely now fully understand that they are not going to be able to "showboat" to promotion.
Hopefully R L will be back next week. If not then the manager will have to come up with a better game plan than he did today, something which should not be beyond him given the players at his disposal I would hope.
In regard to the game today am I alone in thinking that Sharp looked as though the penalty was too much for his nerves to cope with? He appeared to me as though he could not get it over with quickly enough.
Also, in regard to their third goal did the defender on the line (Spiderman?) duck to avoid the ball?

I decided I'd had enough paying out all my money watching a team that only played when they felt like it & bugger the fans.
I joint the Ta & kept away then one day I went to watch them & nothing had changed I played a game I love to play & watch ( Rugby) but I was talked into going to the Zenith Data cup ( League)it was rubbish.
i read & heard how good Saints were this year so I watched the match? did they think they were already promoted? do they think they're up?
If they carry ion playing like this will they make the play offs?
penalty they missed Blackpool score.
a move they must work on saw a open goal just waiting to be headed in missed Blackpool score.
2,000 fans travelled away to see this.
I hope for your sake they buck up their ideas or are you going up?

Having led the pack for so long
WE MUST WIN ALL THOSE 6 IN APRIL AND BE CROWNED CHAMPIONS AND BE PROMOTED IN STYLE.
f*ck reading - and wet spam.
We need only to show consistency and get goals and the WINS and we are back to where we belong in the Premiership.
Like in League One we must always play our strongest Team and that is good enough to beat any Team in this League.
We have variable quality in our Squad below the Strongest Team and that is something to look at in the Summer.
The expression about overachieving etc is not valid anymore.
We have a very good side and the DEMAND is that we are promoted as Champions this Season.
IT IS OUR DESTINY TO SUCCEED.
All the Fans and Passion in the World cannot make up for what we witnessed yesterday.
LET'S MOVE FORWARD TOGETHER with our Star Players for the last 6 games and let's start with SMASHING pompey at Home.
A WIN AGAINST POMPEY IS OVERDUE !!!!
Quality is needed next week to slice them open and put them to the sword.
We must have the ambition to rip them apart .........
THE DEMAND TO NIGEL NEXT WEEK IS WIN.
WE HAVE THE TEAM - NO EXCUSES - ONLY THE WIN WILL DO !!!
WE ARE SOUTHAMPTON.

Whats important now is that we put it behind us, if we had to lose a game last nights debicle was the one. NA and the team have a golden opportunity to wipe the slate clean by wiping away the filth from down the road, lets put out the strongest team possible and make a point to our 12 toed neighbours!
We should also remember that all teams lose at some point, and I dont mean a blip. Look at Liverpool v Wigan, Arsenal took an 8 goal hammering at HOME!
Just keep it all in perspective, yes last night was embarrassing. But it wasn't the end of the road, just a bad day at the office. And as for some calling for NA's head, do me a favour FFS!......... COYR's! FOP!

Now looking for excuses: Lambert missing is a very big deal. The terrible pitch suited Blackpool's style of kick and hope, rush and hope (which does not work in the Premier League) but it did not suit Saints passing game. The officials made some bad decisions. It is a hard job and perhaps TV got to them but they were the worse team on the pitch. All in all I accept this as a one off and Lambert's return will ensure it is no more than that.

.
We will have good playing surfaces at SMS and Boro but I think the other 2 (P/boro and Palace) will leave their playing surface dry and bumpy after seeing last night's performance.
.
Can I also add the state of the BALL, the first one was like a rugby ball and the second one was only slightly better, but still far from 100% round.
.
The more I think about it we were out done by Holloway PRE MATCH preparation.

STUFF POMPEY Saturday
WE ARE SOUTHAMPTON WE ARE TOP OF THE LEAGUE
Fantastic---- REDARMY1 KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK.
WHEN WE'RE DOWN YOUR STILL ON THE BOIL
COYS.
Penalty should be scored every time ... NO EXCUSES !!!
blackpool got a penalty which clearly wasn't ...
Defending for second and third goal - shocking - Noticed that Jose Fonte always seems to concentrate on the man rather than getting the the ball and he needs to improve this area of his game to be Premier Class.
All in All - whatever Nigel says or thinks - WE ALL MISSED RICKIE !!!
RICKIE LAMBERT IS IMMENSE and that's why he was Crowned Championship Player of the Year.
WE NOW GO FORWARD.
3 HOMES GAMES TO WIN.
NO FEAR-NO SURRENDER.
3 AWAY GAMES TO WIN-WIN-WIN.
SOUTHAMPTON'S RED ARMY WILL FLOOD THE TERRACES AND DOMINATE FOR THE REMAINING GAMES AND AT PALACE WE WILL OWN THE STREETS-THE PUBS-AND THE FOOTBALL.
RED ARMY. FIGHT AND WIN.
WE RULE THE SOUTH. AND AIM TO BE CROWNED CHAMPIONS.

If only Billy had scored the pen the game would have been totally different.
Our full-backs struggled today, I'm surprised Harding didn't come on at right back as Butterfield seemed to struggle against the pace of Phillips.
Hooiveld looked out of position for their second goal, and to leave a man unmmarked on their 3rd corner in a row is shocking.
Thought Phillips looked a class player and wouldn't mind seeing him at Southampton next year.
Not a good team performance, much like the defeat to Leicester at home. I'm sure that with Rickie back the team will lift again, hopefully for next week.

teams can train or play midweek, ask a player what he would rather have and every time they will say play.
Ask fans whether they would rather comment on a game or more Echo speculation, game every time.
We are going to have some serious commenting to do in the next few weeks, so I suggest a strict training regime starting this afternnon in the pub gardens across Southampton and outlying regions .

We started with the diamond shape, which NA likes to use, asking the full backs to bomb forward, giving us the width we lose, through playing a narrow midfield.
As a result, every time we lost possession 'Pool had an easy "out" ball, wide into the space vacated by the full backs.
When we eventually went 442, their wingers were less effective, as there was less space for them.
Regarding the 2nd goal, I was expecting Kelvin to be running out to meet the ball as it entered the penalty area. Did I misjudge it or did he?
I expected this game to be a defeat, so hopefully we can put it behind us and move on.

On the bigger question of the whole game, one thing Nigel's very good at is learning lessons and moving on. No need for over-analysis of one defeat from 13 games: It's going to happen.

I've said something that you don't agree with & you call me that c++p If you had read my original post you will see I was with you the first time we got relegated (went to every away match) was there the year we won the cup & yes I went to Wembley to watch that win & then to watch us lose the charity shield & League cup.
I stopped going to football when I was fined for attacking Millwall fans & I realised I was getting into trouble over a game so I kept away.
If those two that were mentioned are the playmakers what the hell happened at BLACKPOOL?

It was hard to watch and was one of the worst performances of the season. Nigel has done and dusted the sad story and asks we move on.. good enough for me.
However it must be said that every time the heads went down on the pitch and sitting in front of our tellies or PC's our fantastic away travelling fans sang louder.. gratitude and admiration isn't enough.. we truly have the best fans.. they'll be gutted as much as the players and Nigel. Messaged Jordan on the os and glad Nigel has scotched the rumour of Rickies op... He's fine and will be back next week.. No mention of Chung though I understand he's close.
Head up.. 12 game run over new one starts with the skates.
There now to bed with it.

After watching the game yesterday and posted on here that it was a disgraceful display, i thought i may have over reacted with my comment, so ive watched the whole game through again to take the positives from it,guess what, there were none so it was a disgraceful display.
Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but the one's that get to me (and others) are those people who are silent when we win but wake up and over-react when we lose.
So, to answer your earlier question, there's no problem having a pop but expect people like me to have a pop at anyone who only comments when there's something they want to moan about.

When we play Poopey, Reading will have thrashed/been thrashed by Leeds on Friday. Wet Spam will have been seen off by Barnsley. And on Monday we have another almost home game at Palace with 6,000 Saints fans screaming the team on ! How can we not be optimistic ?
