Hammers hang on with a point
7:39pm Monday 9th April 2012 in Saints News
Nigel Adkins - waiting game
Ricardo Vaz Te’s dramatic penalty leveller for West Ham tonight ensured Saints will have to wait a bit longer to celebrate promotion.
Vaz Te converted an 89th minute spot-kick to give the Hammers a 3-3 draw at home to Birmingham – after they had trailed 3-1 with 20 minutes left.
Had West Ham lost to the Blues, Saints would have moved 10 points ahead of them by beating Reading at St Mary’s on Friday night.
Nigel Adkins’ men would then be celebrating promotion had the Hammers then lost at home to Brighton the following day.
As it is, even if Saints beat Reading and West Ham lose to Brighton, Saints will be nine points ahead of the Hammers with three games left - and boasting a superior goal difference.
But mathematically, they would not be assured of promotion prior to next Tuesday’s visit to Peterborough.
The best Palace v Saints coverage is in tomorrow’s Daily Echo.

Fans were superb, good fun afterwards watching WH struggle.
The players were in absolute control in the second half.
I do get concerned in my darker moments what we'd be like without Rickie, but lets enjoy (!) the run in just now.
Adkins deserves enormous credit for getting the players mental game in place.
We won't let this slip now.

Haven't wanted to be home so much as I do now to see the last few games & celebrate at SMS on the 28th!
It was great & spine tingling to hear our 6000 at Palace in the early hours (local time) in such fine voice & ruling the roost, & Rickie banging them in again.
Roll on Saturday morning at 6.45am for a breakfast delight & a rip roaring game at SMS for what is virually the Championship title decider - can't wait!

Fans were absolutely magnificent and on cue owned the PUBS - THE STREETS AND THE TERRACES.
Good fun was had by all - the George (like the Cup Game) was the STAR PUB with a packed ALL SAINTS PUB spilling out onto the pavement and the 50-100 fans outside singing - welcoming the Coaches and good honest drinking.
The Players were absolutely brilliant chasing down every ball and ADAM LALLANA put a shift in defensively as well as his normal game in midfield looking to score goals.
RICKIE LAMBERT WAS IMMENSE.
Danny Fox was brilliant and his awareness of the Crowd shows he is right on top of his game and really enjoying it. His attitude is absolutely spot on.
Praise continues .... Jose Fonte and Jos Hooiveld ... awesome and now Saints seem to be owning everything in the Air - WELL DONE.
I have levelled criticism previously at 2 Players :
Danny Butterfield was a natural to play today for selection and he put in a very good shift. He still needs to be faster with his decision making when mounting an attack - (not rush it) - otherwise it all breaks down and the opposition get their men back. He also needs to every time not back off when presented with a Defender otherwise they get a cross in or a shot.
WELL DONE DANNY FOR TODAY !!
Number 2 Player is Guly. He was played absolutely right by Nigel today and he was ready to make an impact and unlucky not to score a goal.
He has previously had stick from the crowd - but if Nigel plays him - then that is the issue rather than with the Player.
Next up is Reading and that has
DRAW written all over it !!
If Nigel can use the correct formation to nullify their threat on the wings and then if the Saints Players can WIN every ball in the air incoming and man mark players like Le Fondre - then there is every likelihood of a SAINTS WIN.
Finally I wish to end this post by exposing 4 bullsh*t urban myths that the blue pondlife talk about and really believe (one brain cell)
1. On the Pitch - At the Derby Game the blue few chanted this when Police were in position - how pathetic !!
2. Blue pondlife hardmen were coming to Southampton outside the bubble - utter sh*t
3. The OB are there to protect Saints - :O) LOL - 30,000 Red and White Army and the Blue Few ...

4. Blue few were going to infiltrate our Key areas in the Terraces - more sh*t - how many blue shirts did you see in our section ...

The team were fantastic on the pitch and the fans were at a different level.
Palace support was almost unheard by us.
We were noisy very noisy.6000 screaming as one, was something we will never forget.
The fans were in the roads outside the pubs, as we passed in the coach, chanting and generally having a great time. At times during the game it looked like Palace had given up. Credit to Saints, they completely
outplayed and demoralised them. The players were outstanding.
Dean Hammond was exceptional he led the team as the captain should.
It is great to hear from all of our posters from all around the world who demonstrate their fantastic support for our great team.
I know most of you will not be able to get to see this great team in the flesh but rest assured it is in safe hands with the best supporters in the land.

it's laughable and utter bullsh*t
4. Blue few were going to infiltrate our Key areas in the Terraces - more sh*t - how many blue shirts did you see in our section ...
sad old pompey pondlife are league one bound for sure - they are full of sh*t and now everyone knows it (if not before) and then they are going to be liquidized and fingers crossed we will not see or play them for at least a decade or more.
WE ARE SOUTHAMPTON.
WE FIGHT FOR EUROPEAN FOOTBALL IN THE PREMIERSHIP !!!
RED ARMY 2012.

To you and all the 6,000, you were fantastic today..

Was proud to be at delhurst park today. The team looked solid and with only one thing on their minds. THREE GIGANTIC POINTS. You could'nt single out a SINGLE player but, i must just say thank you Richard Chaplow, you were everywhere. Two more goals from Rickie and great support play by Adam. Both fullbacks up and down with good balls delivered. Stonewall central defending but it's what we have grown use to. Kelvin was the man with the elastic arms that just reached the ball when you thought it had got past him. Then Jack and Dean on the fiddle in the middle playing the tune that got the vocal backing to make my day PERFECT , everybody was just so Sharp but none more than our little Billy. THANK YOU Nigel, every game we get a little bit closer, it feels so good i dont want it to be over.
THE SAINTS ARE GOING UP OF THIS IM SURE. NOW THAT WE HAVE TO PLAY JUST FOUR MORE.

Insane saint, the missus and myself went to the game today. We can now, barely talk.
Here's to the Saints and here's to us supporters.
Roll on Friday. Bring on Reading.
PREM here we come.

rob the saint in NZ wrote:Hi Rob, it is a great feeling. We have come so far so fast and I would argue we are stronger and better set up for success than when we struggled those last few years before dropping out of the Premier.
Can't quite believe that we are almost there, just two short seasons ago we were bumping along near the bottom of League 1, & here we are on the verge of the Premier League!
Last season's run-in was brilliant & nerve wracking enough, but this is something else!
WE ARE GOING UP!!!
Never more proud to be a life long fan from Harefield.

Old Fella..Magic post.. we love comments that paint the atmosphere and your post does that..
On Friday I was stunned and almost burst into tears as Norris scored so deep into stoppages.. but Yesterday the game flew by and certainly in the second half just by ignoring the comments and listening to the crowd you could tell there was only one team going to win.. did feel a bit sorry for their young striker.. he'll have better days.
Good on You All.. The Best!
On Sunday NZ Fans will put together a song and stick it on facebook.. we're expecting about 30 Red and Whites in Hamilton NZ at The C0ck and Bull for Sunday Lunch and a good Saintly sing song.
Cheers All

Then there was the following year 1949 when we missed promotion by a difference of .06 in goal average (as it was then). I'm not suggesting there will be a repeat this time round, but you did ask. Try to have a nice day!

I only wish I could be there, but I will be in my front room singing and crying with joy for the great man and 'The Saints'.............
the markus liebherr legacy is now almost fulfilled.and I am so grateful for all that has happened the last few years, we are forever indebted to markus and it's about time we had some sort of recognition to the man.and i think this football club is starting to look the real dogs ****, so thank you st markus and also all the saints management and backroom people, so far you have been magnificent.
