Reading beat Saints to go top
9:44pm Friday 13th April 2012 in Saints News
Saints’ Championship title hopes suffered a big blow as they were beaten 3-1 by Reading at St Mary’s.
The Royals leapfrogged Saints to move three points clear at the top of the table with three games remaining, and Brian McDermott’s side now look nailed on to gain automatic promotion to the Premier League.
Saints remain in a very strong position but will be hoping that West Ham fail to beat Brighton tomorrow to ensure a comfortable gap over the play-off spots.
Saints totally dominated the first half, creating a string of chances, but found themselves a goal down on 19 minutes when Jason Roberts headed in Jimmy Kebe’s cross.
If the first half was a Reading smash and grab, the second period proved much of the same.
Saints got the leveller they had deserved when Rickie Lambert fired in via a deflection three minutes after the restart.
But, after more Saints pressure and more Saints chances had come and gone, it was Reading who again got their noses in front against the run of play, second half sub Adam Le Fondre sidefooting into the top corner.
The Reading win was sealed in stoppage time as Saints failed to deal with a routine long ball and Le Fondre rounded Kelvin Davis and slotted home.

as i said after the Blackpool game, IF we go up, our defense needs completely changing. Very poor defending against a tactically astute Reading. Not good enough.
Coyr's 9 points from remaining games and win the league!

Even if they win against Brighton they're still 3 points behind us!
We lost, but dominated possession & chances. Gutted, but Reading know they ride their luck.

But keep positive, we DID play well, we'll get a point at Posh, 3 at Boro, and then finish the job vs Coventry! In Nigel and Saints we have to keep faith!

I think the stats clearly show we deserve promotion but in the worst scenerio the Championship is a great league to play in.
As long as the players stay calm and play like they did tonight there is every reason for optimism.
If I were a Pompey fan I would be really depressed as sadly they have so little to look forward to because their owners blew it for them.
My sympathy goes out to them as unless a miracle happens they will go out of business & you have to feel sorry for the majority of their fans who have little to look forward to.

I know that full backs are supposed to stop wingers centreing the ball, but they can't do it for 90 minutes.
Federici was superb all night. Swap goalkeepers and we would have won. Chaplow was taken off because he was below par and on a yellow.
He had plenty of chances to make a cross in the first half but dithered too long.
I was most disappointed with De Ridder. With his pace he should have penetrated the penalty area more than once. The only time he did go direct he shot straight at Federici.
Most of Saints players played very well, but Sharp is NOT a quality striker. Too much reliance is placed on Rickie and in the end the ball was being played into him with no-one else prepared to take responsibility for shooting.
Reading were not the best team tonight, but in two positions they were good.
Fingers crossed now for Peter'boro and Midd'boro.

And just a cautionary word. It's very easy to trace people on line nowadays. If anything were now to happen to this individual you have just put yourselves in the spotlight. Be careful what you say because you never know who is reading.

But I would really love Saints to be promoted on their own backs - goal difference will ensure it with two wins and a draw from the last three games is enough. So lets get three wins!!!
And if in the end it doesn't happen we must stand as one put the wheels back on the bus and go for broke in the play offs. Indeed we should be celebrating this achievement now just as there other clubs will do when they get there!

There is wholesale disappointment - but it was just one game of football.
At 1-1 everyone believed with reading on the backfoot that we would go on and WIN.
WE HAVE 3 MORE GAMES and with the Saints Fans strongly getting behind the lads - WE CAN GET THE PROMOTION THAT WE ARE AIMING FOR !!!
WE CAN AND WE WILL BOUNCE BACK - THERE IS LOTS MORE EXCITEMENT IN THE GAMES AHEAD - AND NOTHING BETTER THAN BEING AT THE GROUNDS TO EXPERIENCE IT FIRST HAND.
the blue few are shrinking back and small fry - so very little to say about them. The reading fans with their blue army chant made so much more noise then sad old
pompey when they came to St Mary's.
League One and being liquidized - that's their future.
THE FUTURE IS BRIGHT IN RED AND WHITE.
We were mugged in a smash and grab yesterday and a lot of the moves by reading were highly predictable (cue their first goal)
SAINTS really went for it yesterday and ended up being undone by raw ambition.
The good news is that Saints have developed a good style playing Away from Home - so I have every confidence in the lads.

On a different subject - I am not into cosying up with the Away Fans.
It reminds me of the times when other Teams thought that we were a soft touch and used to steal points from us at home - as
they felt so cosy and comfortable at our place.
Everything was great yesterday on that front .... apart from a couple of inexperienced and twitchy stewards ...
If they can't handle passionate SAINTS FANS - they are definitely in the wrong job !!!! and it just dampens the crowd down - which is exactly the opposite of the effect we are all trying to create !
IF YOU CAN'T HANDLE PASSIONATE FANS - THEN DON'T DO THE JOB !!!
And ......
After the Game as thousands streamed from the game - I saw one of two reading fans prominent outside the Chapel Arms in colours - with a Saints Fan cosy with them.
THAT IS NOT RIGHT IMO.
The Pub was in good spirits and Red and White before the game.

If Brighton win it would give us a six point cushion so unless we lose all three games were promoted.
As for Loosehead if you were a sports fan you would know the term is for a front row forward in Rugby & it means a prop who should be loose enough to break away from the scrum.
I for the sake of my fellow Southampton Citizens want to see Saints promoted but looking at the last few games it's looking touch & go.
we're caught in defence as our defence have to attack as we have a ineffectual midfield.
I asked after Blackpool where the playmaker was & where the midfield was?
you all blame Guly yet you have Lambert & Guly having to go back to midfield to retrieve the ball where's the midfield why aren't they getting the ball to the forwards?
I went to the Dell I was a season ticket holder I went to all the away matches when we went down I went to all the away matches the year we won the cup so once again where's our midfield?

I think the nerves and the ref did it a bit for us, any other day we would have won.
Jason Roberts, Kebe and Federici are Premiership standard. Le Fondre is bang on form. We should do fine for the rest of the season, playing that kind of game is a wake up call, we're not there yet.
Even if WH win today we should consider ourselves way ahead of them as our goal difference is superb. 6 points more to be sure.
WH have been averaging 1.5p/game, 4 games, 6 points, we could already be promoted!
WH have to play 3 play off contenders and a relegation battling team. It's going to be a good summer.

Take heart from the report on the BBC website "If Saints play like that in the last three games then no-one will be able to live with them".
We are without doubt the best footballing side in the division and we need to go into the final three games looking for 7-9 points which could be enough to win the Championship - which we deserve!!

But after being at St Mary's last night and reading some of the posts I felt I would put my opinion forward, I hope you don't mind.
We (Reading) were VERY fortunate last night and on any other day I think you would have won that game twice! I am delighted with the way my team held up and got the win, but I and many other Reading fans are not kidding ourselves, we would get slaughtered playing like that in the premier league, but we are not quite there yet.
I thought Southampton were the best side I have seen this year by far, they were superior at passing the ball and I think your football style will fit better in the Premiership if I am honest.

I think the right two sides are in the automatic promotion places, but if I am honest I think as a footballing side I can see Southampton doing quite well in the Premiership.

Iwas at the match and I feel that the one thing that has not been mentioned is that Rickie Lambert was IMMENCE.
He lead the line last night better than any centre forward I have seen in this country for years. His hold up play, his distribution,
his vision, his shooting, and his desire was fantastic.
He without doubt after last nights display, will be soon playing for England.
Sorry, forgot, he plays for Southampton and they don't play in the premiership.(not till next season anyway)
We have a very obvious flaw in our side week in week out. We have no pace or control at left back, the manager defends Danny Fox consistently, because of his crossing and dead ball ability.
Our game last night was totally undermined by something you are taught at school , never cross the ball across your defence. His general distribution was at best average.
We must change this. We are consistently only using our right wing for attacking, this makes us very vulnerable and unballanced.
Time to move on.
We have 3 games left, can,t wait to travel to Peterborough to get the points to take us to the big time.
COME ON YOU SUPPORTERS LETS MAKE IT A CAULDRON OF NOISE AND WE WILL WIN AT PETERBOROUGH
BRING ON MIDDLESBOROUGH WE WILL BEAT THEM! B------ER THE TELLY!
BRING ON COVENTRY WE WILL BEAT THEM, FOR THE RIGHT TO BE IN THE TOP LEAGUE WHERE WE BELONG.

It isn't the size of the team in the fight which matters now, it's the size of the fight in the team - and we saw plenty of that last night.
After almost two seasons effort, we're now close to climbing onto the summit of a huge mountain. We need to make sure we aren't stopped by letting a few chips of gravel into our boots ie negativity, bickering or feeding trolls on here.

Guly actually did ok when he came on, in a weird inside midfield role, but he wasn't imperious and he looks like he will become anonymous in the Prem when (if) we make it. The true villain in midfield was chaplow, who criminally wasted chances in the first half to put the game beyond reading's reach. His injury this year destroyed his season, he was awesome down the right before that.
the best we have played in a while but can someone explain to me why oh why doed NA play fox in my veiw he can not crossthe ball if he trys a cross field ball it goes to the opposition and how many goals have we conceeded from a poor ball from fox our from the position he is ment to be in. please help i am mystified as why he is picked? guly also looked out of sorts again when he came on i am sure he was ment to have pushed further foward in order to make us a 433 but he just stood there i am critical because these two let me and the team down again tonight?
On the bright side, I saw Sharp linking up well with Ricky. They are tricky together, and they will outclass most defenses after another ten games together.
Butterfield looked good at right back, he seems to have rediscovered form. His crosses could do with more power, but they were causing nightmares for reading in their accuracy.
So, we got beaten by a team that has won 14 of their last 16 games. And to their credit, reading were lethal in front of goal. We move on and focus on tying up second, and get ready for life back at the top if we can be professional and win two of the last three. My money is on winning at Peterborough (tough but they are nt the force they were) and cov at home. Job done!

Normally I arrive late, 15 minutes before kick off and leave early, 8 minutes before the end. I leave early because I like to beat the traffic and I am very impatient in queues. I live 33 miles north of Southampton.
Against Pompey I stayed until the end and if I had gone last night I would have stayed as well. As I will for the last home match against Coventry. I will show my appreciation to players at this game.
But next season I will continue to leave early as I have always done; with a few exceptions no doubt. I am a better driver when I am not stressed. I am sure there must be a few more like me who don't live close to SMS.

More expensive, and you'd see lots of teams with barely half the commitment and entertainment value (a bunch of balotellis avisiting st Marys, no thanks). The championship reminds me of footie in the 80s and 90s, before the sheiks, Russians, Malaysian tycoons and indian chicken farmers took over. That said, I would never want to go back to League One, even though it was whe we were reborn.
Nothing to worry about. It was a great game to watch and but for the Reading goalie we would have won . He was brilliant just as he was against Brighton.

I am always interseted in opposition comment, but usually I have to sift through a whole load of carp first.
Comment from people watching the game with me on TV was that this was the Saints performance that we wanted other football fans to see.
We were the real Saints team, unfortunately , this was the real Reading team. They waited and got 3 chances and took them and made sure they didn't concede. A lesson there for us.
I have no fear for us going up 2nd or even 1st if Reading do get caught out.

I also think the Southampton fans are the loudest I have witnessed this year and I have been to 10 away games now and all the home games. Don't worry, you will be in the PL next year and you deserve it... I will be coming down to your place again when we play you ... (I would take the same result though)! What a breath of fresh air from a friendly rival supporter with something sensible to say ... take note, you ignorant inbred fish fiddlers.

Job done!
Chaplow got into a banter match with Harte. In my opinion Harte got into his head and he stopped concentrating on the game. He wasn't playing well but he got worse after they exchanged words. When Rickie equalised he kicked the ball
into the stand.
The TV commentators said they saw the ref speak to Nigel immediately and within two minutes his was subbed. The suggestion being the next offence would result in another yellow and then a red. He needs to mature a bit in big games and not get wound up.
I thought Butterfield played well, but I would have liked to have seen Richardson for the last 15 minutes working with De Ridder. I think we would have more opportunity to exploit Harte's lack of pace and get some crosses in from the bye line with those two working together. Butterfield tends to cross from mid way between the centre line and the corner flag which because of the wider angle gives defenders a better chance to clear the ball.
On the night Reading were more effective in defence and more efficient in front of goal than us.
It only goes to prove that if you have greater possession of the ball but you don't do the right things in the penalty areas then you won't win a game of football.
I still strongly believe we will be promoted with Reading.

I see Reading did exactly the same to you as they did to us....soaked up loads of pressure, rode their luck (incredibly in our case), then smashed and grabbed.
We battered 'em for 90 mins and I hear you did similar.
D@mn annoying but what can you do? They are a very effective team I have to say, but not the best.
Anyway, am on the way to Upton for the revenge match. Hippo The Hammer has been giving it the big one (again) in the press....getting over-defensive about his hoofball (surprise, surprise), as pointed out by dear old Gus! ;0)
We owe them after they "did us tactically" (apparently) i.e we made one individual error under little pressure and they scored from their resultant ONLY shot on target.
1-3 today, I reckon. We'll do ourselves a favour and you guys too into the bargain.
Much rather see football win and I have a feeling Wet Sham are going to blow the whole deal this season. Listen out on the audio match reports today for The Albion Army shouting "HOOF!". They've had it all season i'm sure but the unoriginality is what'll be annoying! ;0) and we tend to make ourselves heard!

Agreed on frazer -- butterfield slowed down a bi towards the end, maybe lacking some fitness. And Richardson with fresh legs and his tendency to get to the byline could have balanced things differently.

admittedly that is because we have a larger ground with much better facilities.
PFC halved their admittance charges to bring up their attendance and that worked, 15,837 turned up to watch Millwall, about half the amount at Saints v Reading. 19879 is their best attendance, against Saints.
So the only pleasure their supporters get is to come on here when we have a set back, so please, Saints fans, do not deny them this small gift.
It is hard for them to bear that today they could well be relegated and very shortly liquidised.

Reading fan here. Thought lambert lead the line really well last night. Lambert and lallana were outstanding but outdone by our goalkeeper. Went into the game thinking Davis and federici were the goalkeepers of the season in the championship but think Feds has edged ahead now on that front. A record 13th away win of the season for the club previously held by coppells championship winning team of 2005-6 with 12 wins. Achieved by soaking up long periods of pressure and converting chances when presented. This tactic has worked for the royals pretty much since their win at Leeds last year and has only been rumbled by cardiff and Peterborough who also took their chances when presented. It's not a tactic which will work in the premier league though. Final thoughts last night - thought the away coaches should be cordoned off - the minor trading of hand bags outside the away coaches was faintly amusing but unnecessary.

I agree though that I didn't like to see fans walking out before the end, but hey, when you have a successful side you will no doubt pick up fans who are not quite as dedicated as others, but they pay their money and they take their choice.
I personally have never walked out early, would never after the 3-1 come back against Newcastle at the Dell, when we were 1-0 down with 5 minutes to go... then popped up Shipperley!!
But for you to say that about our fans when you can't muster support for your last few games with special offers is frankly my friend a joke. You need to look at your own supporters before you start judging anyone else. 2 reading have here before in recent seasons. This is new ground for this saints team.
3 we are still 6 points clear of wet spam. If they lose today and we beat pboro tues, we're virtually up.
4 did we really think it would be so easy? Come on, this is saints -we don't do easy!
5 where is puncheon? Has he had another fallout with nicola? Can't help thinking we would have more about us with punch wide right and Chaplow through the middle instead of deano.
6 whatever happens this has been a great season. Beyond what any of us could reasonably have expected.

Last night's game was a really good game of football that we unfortunately lost, BUT, I am still a Saints supporter this morning/afternoon/to
morrow and my team is 2nd in our league.
Feels quite good actually.
BHA can beat WHU and the world will feel quite good again.
Donnie can beat PFC and it will seem even better.

Bloody great feeling to know that even if West Ham hold on, we lose on Tuesday (not that we will) and they win on Tuesday we will STILL be above them unless the most unlikely swing of goal difference takes place.
Being 3 points ahead of them might just give our players that extra urgency to win on Tuesday.

He's picked a team to try & determine the outcome of the championship.
Even if West Ham caught us they needed a better goal difference so send out a team you know will get thumped?
Surely he should have been fighting for promotion not playing to get West Ham Promoted?
This is disgusting but this could backfire on that prat as long as we win our remaining games he's blown a play off place for nothing.
Hopefully we can beat Peterborough the way Leeds did today.

Fact - Saints have had a great season, better than we had dare hope for and should the worse happen we are still in the Championship and still in our 5 year plan with money to spend.
So your happy with being in league one, well we will see if that will happen, or if you have to start in non-league. Personally, I couldn't care less. All I know is that Saints across this season have been better than Pompey - FACT.. Look at the table.
To top it off, your tem that you are so proud in has agin let down local businesses and charities by owing them money.

First you've got to credit West Ham for their win today and the way Allardyce has managed them and the press over the past few weeks. They now have that all-important momentum begun in the second half of the Birmingham game that is going to be difficult to halt.
Second, well done to Portsmouth for their fight-back and the 2 late goals which may only delay the inevitable, but who knows, stranger things have happened.
As for us, it is still in our own hands; we know what we have to do. If we can't beat Peterborough then we really don't deserve automatic promotion but I'll be there on Tuesday.
It's a great game football!

I have just read the post from "Reading 1974" again and that made me feel good about things. I thought we played well last night and I still believe we can do it, we just need to stay with the team for the last three games.
As for these Pompey idiots who keep coming on here, I find it rather sad that all they have to pin their hopes to is for Saints to miss out on promotion! Well, I personally think they must be complete idiots.
From our own experience we know what it was like when we were going through troubled times and Pompey were "flying, however history has taught us that they did not actually achieve anything other than stealing large sums of money from us tax payers and charities, which makes my blood boil.
But at no point when we were in trouble did I care about Pompey, I was worried about the future of MY club, the club I love. That was all that mattered.
But here we are, and you get a few Pompey supporters that really believe that us not going up would make them happy... I am sorry but they obviously don't love Portsmouth, instead they just hate Southampton. It is a view point I am struggling hard to understand how anyone can go onto a rivals web site and celebrate the fact that Southampton are 2nd from top and Portsmouth are 2nd from bottom, is that success for them.
If it was the other way around I would certainly not go onto their site and shout about it, how embarassing!
So, it seems that a few Pompey supporters are happy with the way things are, well they deserve what they get in that case.
Whilst they slip away into the abyss, we will hopefull get enough points on the board to achieve promotion. But whatever happens, I would rather be the top end of the table than the bottom end, now that is something to cheer about!

Thought that readings little bit of extra experience at this level showed last night. Plenty of chances to win the game but we did not take them and got caught conceding some poor goals although reading took them well. The hammers result makes it interesting but still clearly in saints hands. Advice: don't waste you time debating with our friends down the road (unless its what turns you on of course) - that club is in a world of pain of their own making (owners and management) and I do feel for their genuine supporters. I hope they get some luck soon (good result today- the great escape??).

He begged as many Saints fans that could to go to Portsmouth to go & help them out as they were in deep financial trouble.
Of I went with a few friends on a family coach what I witnessed was the Police taking young guys out of the Southampton Supporters end & then allowing Pompey fans (yobs) come in & attack old ladies old men & children because they wore saints scarfs,If you fought back suddenly the police were there & ejected you. I hated Pompey supporters for that. It took me a while through the TA & Rugby to realise that not all Pompey people were sc=m & that sport of any form was a good thing I didn't want to witness a sports/football club out of existence but after reading your Pompey comments on here some of you haven't changed & I totally see why your so hated.
How can any true minded sports/footie fan think that what Poyet did today was right?
His team are just outside the playoffs a win today could have taken them much closer but he sacrificed that chance to stop us?
If we're in third & you need us to beat Coventry what we should lose so you go down?
A manager should play for the benefits of his club & go for a win every time.
I hope your new owners if you get anyone signs Gus Poyet & he sacrifices promotion to stop another teams ambition You are just total Morons & I feel sorry for the true Portsmouth football fans

I don't need compliments from non discript reading supporters ...
I saw the evidence of their support at reading Away and they were pathetic ... !!
They go on a winning run and suddenly they appear out of the woodwork and wave their scarves and try and appear as committed supporters ..
Regarding sad old pompey - they are well and truly buried - just a matter of time and then when liquidized they will be playing in the Wessex League and Sharing a Ground with Havant.
I don't get cosy with Away Supporters ... and then wait until they are in the Stadium and suddenly become rivals ... and then have a beer with them afterwards.

I went down to Portsmouth the year we won the cup when Deacon was your chairman & leader of our council.
Whilst there is banter that goes on between the teams and unfortunately in some cases there has been serious trouble between the mindless fans in the past your story telling is taking the p1ss.
I personally hope we can continue to play each other in coming years and the past 2 matches has shown we can avoid the violence so why you post this drivel is beyond me.
How on earth you could come on here & try to berate me is unbelievable.
I know what happened as one of these so called fans tried to headbutt me but missed & then quickly ran away.
there was a gate/barrier the police opened to one of the stands & the Pompey yobs poured in.
Without giving my identity away I went with friends who got into a lot of trouble I got fed up of being attacked when I was just there supporting my team.
so I stuck with the yobs & I gave to those who attacked us back the same violence Looking back on it I'm not proud of what I did but I wasn't going to stand & take it.
so fines of £85 then £250 then £850 dropping to £50 & a warning of imprisonment kind of says I was there even if I was an arsehole back then.
So please don't bring up or compare what i've said to Schindlers list .if you didn't see what was happening back then or wasn't alive lucky you but don't make out people to be liars who were there

Did the legendary Bill Shankly have a name for Portsmouth did he even know you had a football team?
we've played in two cup finals (FA) one we won we played in the Charity shield we also played in two versions of the Charity shield we also played in Europe not to bad for a team with no history is it?
exactly what have you done in your long existences?
Have two owners who've fleeced you? had a manager who brought a load of foreign players only to take them to Tottenham? sorry forget pre war years but exactly what have you done?
How long did you stay back up in the premiership?
Sorry I suppose I should ask a true Portsmouth Football fan & not someone who would rather post in a Southampton paper

serious question now ive stopped laughing, why dont you support your team for 90 minutes instead of stopping singing when you are losing and leaving in your thousands with 10 minutes left ?

If I was a Brighton fan I'd be calling for Gus's head.
forget playing to get into the play offs.
I'm not into calling away teams too many names but I can see why the Saints Fans hate Poyet & I wonder how many Brighton fans are starting to feel that way now?
You've just embarrassed yourself there on a massive scale.
As for Tug(himself off)boat and Rocketone: you really are small town hicks, aren't you? Get over last season for goodness sake! The rest of us have moved on.

Do you genuinely think Gus (or anyone) would throw a whole season's campaign away to spite a team he doesn't care tuppence for - except when playing them that weekend or in a title-race? Really? I am genuinely amazed you've typed this theory on here twice!

I can say for sure if I were in their position I wouldn't be over there trying to make drama, especially when theres plenty going on in my own backyard.
Mr Factman, tell us some facts that are relevant now?. Lets compare the clubs now? you know the best way to face adversity is to be honest with yourself, face the truth and take it like a man, to bring it down to your level, basically son your are f***ed -- FACT!
whitelines(nice name btw!) what are you doing here your football club needs you!. Shouldn't you be doing some fund raising or something. Honestly gentlemen our football club is in the best shape it has been for many years, we are flying high, we are filling the stands, albiet when loosing, a good few want to get to the bar first to drown their sorrows...big deal!
We needed a win or a draw and we didn't play that bad, but we were beaten, lets move on and get ready for the bus to Peterborough. Whatever happens we are here making history good or bad, I'd rather be making history then actually being history. From a indiscriminate point of view and I mean this, honestly what has happened and the situation down the road is the worst ever known by any football club, and that will go down in history, well done lads something for you to be proud of.
Now lets play football.

Maybe if we started with Ridder's and Chaps in the centre we may have turned our chances but hinesight is a wonderful thing. We need 11 confident players to stand up strong and do what we have done all season, forget about WHU, Reading or the other lowers, distraction from what is there for the taking will be our downfall. Focus and determination is the key and that goes for the fans too.
