Adkins stresses need for consistency
10:41pm Friday 13th April 2012 in Saints News
Nigel Adkins
Nigel Adkins insists Saints will maintain their consistent approach despite a 3-1 defeat to Reading.
The Saints boss was trying to remain positive after the loss that put the Royals three points clear at the top of the table.
But he was clearly frustrated as the pressure increased just a little on his side, who will be waiting to hear West Ham’s result at Brighton tomorrow to see if it will get a little nervier ahead of a game at Peterborough on Tuesday night.
Adkins said: “We will keep our principals right on how we want to play but ultimately it’s about sticking them in at one end and keeping them out at the other.
“We will be in training in the morning which is planned, we will analyse this, we’ll do a recovery session, put this game to bed and get ourselves ready for Tuesday.
“What we will do is remain positive and get ourselves ready for the next game.”

This game was the reverse of the Leeds game at Elland Rd when Kelvin Davis was supreme as the Reading goalie was today.
Saints controlled the game today but had 3 defensive lapses in which Reading took their opportunities....it happens to the best of teams and Saints just need to regroup and stay calm

I have waited 35 years for a really big celebration - ONE DAY it will come. I don't know when but it will happen one day. Sometimes i really wish i moved to Southampton before May 1976 because i might not make it another 35 years.

Fox looked isolated at times and fair do's reading are a decent outfit, bit of a smash and grab but it wins points. 3 to go, it'll be alright, just hold on to your seat, I think the bus has some tight turns to maneuvre and I can smell fear on the passengers. Sit down and belt up, its going to be close!!

Very frustrating for NA but hopefully we come back against Peterborough in the same way as we did against Palace last week.

Reading didn't create much and scored 3-goals - you have to hand it to them they took their chances.
The first was self inflicted - what was Fox thinking about? The second came from the left hand side too - who was meant to be marking Le Fondre. The third was a gimme for Le Fondre!
We huffed and puffed but do not look clinical in front of goal. The diagonal ball to the back stick for Lambo gets a bit monotonous - can't we do anything else? We seem to lack the inventiveness we had earlier in the campaing - I guess that's because we are trying to go up automatically?
Going to next 3-games to see us through to the finishing line - Reading have been unstopable of late, but they do look beatable. Perhaps we are not destined to be Champions again?
All to do at Posh - pretty sure we will get something there. Boro sounds a tough game, but they are not that good at home.
I was gutted last night, a chance gone begging - but this morning I am more philosophical about the game.
Let's not mourn a missed opportunity, and get up for the next challenge.
Forget the cynics - we can do this. I thought our support last night was quiet - I guess "we" the 12th man is getting nervous?
No such nerves at Peterborough on Tuesday night. Onwards and upwards...COYR!

RED ARMY WE FIGHT TO WIN AND WE RULE THE SOUTH.
LAST NIGHT we played READING.
WE RULED THE STREETS.
WE RULED THE PUBS.
WE RULED THE TERRACES.
Unfortunately, the Reading players RULED THE GAME.
But WE ARE SOUTHAMPTON, PRIDE OF THE SOUTH.
WE ARE SECOND IN THE LEAGUE.
And I still RULE my CAPS LOCK KEY.

Fair play to Reading, they took their chances we didn't.
Having said that, the referee I thought was appaling for another so called Premier league ref.How he missed the blantant infringements on Sharp and Lambert is beyond me. I can only recall the ref awarding us the off-sides, yet he awarded Reading every **** 50/50 challenge and those that were out and out fouls on Saints players.
It seems sometimes that only the Saints can grab defeat out of the jaws of victory.
As other true Saints supporters have said, we dominated the game but didn't take our chances and Reading took theirs.
All is far from lost; so jog on whitelines, mellowmel
lor and Forest Saint, none of you are Saints supporters just wums.
We have played far worse and come away with the results earlier in the season so it's just the way football goes.
Shitelines- the fact that supporters leave early is, believe it or not, referred to as human nature. Your lot don't even make up the numbers who left early yesterday when they attend a game at the start, so you cannot critisise our fans whatsoever.
We played good football last night but as is often said in these postings, Saints never do things the easy way.
Just everyone remain behind the team until the final game when we gain our rightful automatic promotion spot.
"Adkins out", what a load of borrocks!! he is the best manager Saints have had in a long long time and long may he continue to drive our team forward. He will however, need his sports psychology degree qualification to get the team up for the next game.
I'm confident he will do that, his mantra that he always uses after all games will never be truer following last nights result.
We are still 6 points above the Spam so we are still on target for promotion.COYRs

Best of Luck to Brighton this afternoon as this could be their last chance to cement a place in the Play-Offs.

1 we lost to the form team in the division. No shame in that.
2 reading have here before in recent seasons. This is new ground for this saints team.
3 we are still 6 points clear of wet spam. If they lose today and we beat pboro tues, we're virtually up.
4 did we really think it would be so easy? Come on, this is saints -we don't do easy!
5 where is puncheon? Has he had another fallout with nicola? Can't help thinking we would have more about us with punch wide right and Chaplow through the middle instead of deano.
6 whatever happens this has been a great season. Beyond what any of us could reasonably have expected.
I still believe we'll be promoted. We could still be champions. Let's enjoy the rest of the ride. It will be nailbiting, it will be nervy, it will probably go to the last day - but I reckon it'll be worth it. COYS!

You played well and are premier league bound but what must the players have thought as they trudged of the pitch applauding the empty seats, live on tv with millions watching, your fans were leaving in their thousands with 10 minutes left, you cant deny it and its shameful.

If Saints lose one match and both Reading and West Ham win all remaing three matches then Saints will finish third while Reading and West ham both will get promotion.
If that is the case Saints may lose promotion if Blackpool and Cardiff join play off.

Is NA the right man to lead us? Tactically he doesn't seem to be able to change the way we play despite all the other teams having worked out how we faff around at the back instead of just getting the ball up front quicker. At the start of the season we were closing opposing teams down & now they're doing that to us & we've stopped doing it. Ian Holloway worked us out & other managers have used the same tactics but we're still trying to play possession football & it's not working. As a supported who can see this why can't NA? There are some ordinary players that he has signed compared to the signings of AP! If we still get promoted (it won't be thro the playoffs) would he be the first casualty of the premier league? Can't believe we have 2 full backs on the bench (one not good enough) but not a striker like Lee Barnard to bring on, Guly came on in midfield. Change the tactics NA, prove me wrong & get us back where we belong!
