Southampton players jetting off to Las Vegas
6:00am Tuesday 1st May 2012 in Saints News
By Gordon Simpson, Senior Sports Reporter
SAINTS are sending their players on a major promotion party to Las Vegas as reward for reaching the Premier League.
The club have agreed to fund a trip for the squad to the “Entertainment Capital of the World” following their heroics this season.
Saints hit the jackpot on Saturday when they beat Coventry 4-0 at St Mary’s to book a place back in the top flight.
And the players’ cards have come up trumps too, with another fully-paid trip to the famous American city.
The squad were sent to Vegas last year after winning promotion from League One into the second tier.
And they were promised a repeat visit this summer if they could ensure a return to the elite of English football.
The trip will cap a series of memorable celebrations for the players following promotion at the weekend.
The trip will cap a series of memorable celebrations for the players following promotion at the weekend.
On Saturday night, after the incredible scenes of jubilation at St Mary’s, they partied with the rest of the club’s staff at a specially- organised event at the Four Seasons Hotel at Fleet.
Then, on Sunday, members of the squad toasted their success at an impromptu gathering with supporters at a city bar.
Last year, Saints chairman Nicola Cortese sanctioned the initial Vegas trip during the raucous celebrations on the team coach following the victory at Plymouth that had effectively sealed a place in the Championship.
In the final weeks of the current campaign, he agreed to give the green light to a return visit, on condition the players finished off stunning back-to-back promotions.
The squad held up their end of the bargain, and they will be hoping their good run of fortune continues as they prepare to hit some of the most famous casinos in the world. Las Vegas is proving an increasingly popular destination for promotion-winning teams, with Norwich last season also sending their players to the city after they reached the top flight.

This is great news as I feel the players have done a great job once again, but is there going to be a party at St Mary's for us fans to attend to see our hero's and to be able to give them a send off to Los Vegas may be put on a BBQ for us FANs would be nice.

So wish I could have been there, I have been watching all the clips on OS again & again!

Don't get me wrong - but on the sort of money they are on, why don't the players fund the trip themselves?
What about the "fans" celebrations - we had to fund these ourselves...and it wasn't cheap!
I'm beginning to finded bruises I didn't know existed on Saturday or Sunday - what's all that about?

Sorry to rain on the parade but I can hardly believe what I'm reading. The players have done their job and done it well; that's what they are paid for. Particulary in the present climate, when many fans will be lucky to get a weekend in Bournemouth this year I think the idea of them swanning off to America is obscene and insensitive. It also sets people's expectation levels at unrealistic heights. No wonder our kids ask "What do I get if...., I want this..... etc. The players receive more than enough reward - and don't forget, a team and coach are only as good as the last match.

They have provided inspiration and joy to thousands of people in Southampton for the last nine months. Well done and thank you.
Bleating and moaning about their inflated wage levels is all very well but it is misplaced right now.
It's a sad fact but worth remembering that for some of those players who played on Saturday it may have been their last match for Saints. If Nigel buys in over the summer (as he must surely do) then there will at least a couple of players who will never play a premier league match for us. It sounds cruel but it's a reality of that level of football. I'm not naming names as it's the wrong time and we should celebrate for many weeks to come. But whoever the unlucky ones are they should live like kings for the next few months.
So live big !! Make sure to stock up on the great memories and remember how it felt.
I wish them all a safe and enjoyable trip.

I appreciate St Marys was full of very satisfied, indeed overjoyed, customers on Saturday - and thousands of fans think they've had excellent value for money this season. But little thought is given to the likes of my Uncle Herbie, a season ticket holder, who likes to grumble all the time and has had a torrid time of it lately, though admittedly after a good run with two relegations etc. People often think he's very enthusiastic as he stands up most of the match even in the Kingsland, but that's only because, evidently like many of the Northam guys, he has very painful piles - a further source of much grumbling.
I told him he must learn to take the smooth with the rough, but like you, this Las Vegas thing has put him in a bit of a rage. He's sickened by the largesse dished out to the players - not one of whom, according to the records, has ever donated a single penny from their vast fortunes to the British Haemorrhoid Foundation.
Uncle Herbie doesn't seem to realise that the players' disgracefully selfish behaviour is in fact a blessing. I mean, if they all went off for the Summer to fight the malarial mosquito problem in Africa, he'd have nothing at all to complain about.
Anyhow, hopefully he will find some solace by remembering the experience of my Uncle Jiang in Las Vegas. He's such a chancer that he even gambled away his Mercedes 500 car! The people at Hertz were absolutely furious.

The players deserve all they can get. A footballers life is not very long. Last year, Nicola Cortese paid for the trip out of his own salary.
Before Saturdays' game, I don't think there wouldn't have been a single fan who have complained about the trip, if the result had been linked to the Vegas trip.
Let us wallow in the reflected glory of the players and staff for at least a couple of weeks before getting on the " Moaners Bus "

For the smile these players have put on our faces this year I for one am delighted for them, they deserve it. If the owners of Southampton want to reward their staff for a job well done, then it is their perogative, the same as any company. I am really pleased that the chairman and owners of SFC have appreciated what their team has done. It did no harm last year!!

This squad were all kids once but they just aimed higher and/or were born with a single minded determination to succeed.
They have worked hard and played hard, giving up most weekends, and have been watched live by up to about 800,000 over a whole season home and away. They are in the entertainment business and the career can be shortlived. The rewards are in line with what others are getting.
This squad have qualities that kids can admire and learn from, most kids who say "I want" ..do very little for what they get anyway.
