Southampton FC Transfer Rumours - Summer 2012

Saints Rumours Saints Rumours

AS excitement builds ahead of Saints' return to the Premier League, scores of transfer rumours are flying around.

If you come across any transfer rumours, add them below or email them into to dan.kerins@dailyecho.co.uk explaining where you got it from.

The list needs the help of Saints fans to make it a success and as reliable as possible. The aim is to make sure all supporters are on top of all rumours going around.

Just because a name is on here, don't necessarily expect a deal to be imminent or certain to happen.

If you don't like it, don't click on it - simple as that.

Rumours are being printed for all clubs - all this is doing is putting all the Saints one together so supporters that are interested can find them easily.

All we need at this stage is a level head and stick with the core of the team that has taken us thus far.
We all know where we lack strength - so no good second guessing players from clubs in UK. I think we will go farther afield - and introduce some of our young prospects.
We will need some experience - but I'd rather go for youthful enthusiasm than cool headed experience for bigger bucks.
I love the fact we are united as one, and really play for each other. Bringing in players from relegated clubs is not the answer. Young, hungry and ambitious is what we want...but Nigel knows that and I trust in his judgement!

I'd love to see a player likened to Pahars coming in, adding creativity and options to the midfield/attack.....
.....

Hope the scouting team are working hard for next season!

A couple of English/British Premier League experienced players, and maybe a couple from the developement squad making the move up......

What do you think?

I'd like to see Clyne signed as he'd be able to cover both full-back positions, and would be good competition for Richardson. I think Butterfield may be too slow for the Premiership. I would love for Matt Phillips to join, maybe involved in a swap deal with Puncheon, and would give us good pace on the wings. Vela sounds a good shout, but might be too similar to Tad Lee. A back-up for Lambert would be better. Not sure we'd need a goalkeeper yet, Davis deserves a chance, and has a good clean sheet record from this season. If we do though, I'd go for Foster if Birmingham don't go up, not Green or Gordon as they're no better than Davis.

I reckon Rodriguez will go for around 6m. He is ready to leave now. Bet he kicks himself for prefering to stay at turfmoor.
So Burnley may have to come down from 8m.
Though I guess he would prefer Everton, cos its close to home.
If they can raise the money.
Just feel a lot of players being mentioned are no better than we have and as NA said we now have to up the level. The players coming in have to be better.

I don't reckon we need to many new players to be competitive next year... I would suggest a Goalkeeper (in the mould of Sorensen or Paul Robinson as all PL clubs now have 3 keepers and i don't think Bart could step up if KD got injured) a CB (In the mould of Matt Upson, Zat Knight) a combatative CM (in mould of Lee Cattermole of Wilson Palacios) and another Striker (in the mould of Kenwyne Jones or Georgios Samaras - to cover for Rickie if injured)... all out of contract players except Bart will leave PLUS Barnard, who is a squad player in the championship at best...

Jamie O'hara (Wolves Centre Midfield)

Michu, van der Wiel, Lolo, Dos Santos, Green, who are these people that we are supposed to be signing? We, the fans will be the last to know, NA & NC will quietly do their negotiating in private and only then will we know who, what and when, speculate as much as you like, someone is bound to get one right sooner or later.

you lot are too incestuous... the only person I am "having a go at" is the tourettes guy puppy who started the abuse because he can't help it. I have not moaned about anything.. just pointed out that managers need to think a bit quicker on their feet in the Prem, but that is not only obvious but stated many times before by.... managers....
The last time I moaned about saints was pompey away watching Guly pass the ball over his own head to know one for the third time in 10 minutes.... me and about 30,000 other people.....

I would like to see a quick centre back to play between Jose and Jos.

Then change the formation to five at the back with two wing backs, Fox and Richardson. That way Fox and Richardson's defensive duties are reduced and they can concentrate running up the lines and crossing the ball which is their strength.

I would also like to see a box to box central midfielder and a quick wide player. Plus two strikers and an additional keeper to back up and then take over from Kelvin in the future.

I don't think we can get away with 442 in the Prem. Teams play continental football in the Prem. Where as in the Championship teams play English football.

A friend of mine is a Saints fan living in Toyko, been there 32 years, born in Hampshire. He has worries about Tadanari Lee's fitness. Evidently he has had some very serious injuries in the past.

Having said that, I am sure he was checked out carefully before we signed him.

I do not think the above post is from a Saints fan but some one who can not stand the fact that WE ARE BACK. Nigel has brought in Chaplow bargain of the decade, Cork, De Ridder, The Hoover, Fox in the box, and Sharp who scored 9 goals in 14 games. They have all played their part in our rise back to the Premier league. Nigel will bring in the right sort of players who can play the Saints way ie the passing game.

Lets leave it to Nigel he certainly has not let us down. Pardew left here under a cloud just as he did at West Ham. When Nigel took us over we were in the bottom 4 in league onet . The post above has a limited interlect who only can use bad language. He should save his comments for the Portsmouth evening news, because he is clearly a blue nose.

We can only have a squad of 25, of which 8 must be home grown. So instead of surmising who is coming in, who do people think will be the 8 home grown palyers in the squad. I think as the rules stand Spiderman might qualify as home grown because of his age. We will not have room for Barnard and Connolly in a squad of 25. Just a point if as stated by someone further up , Chaplow is the bargain of the decade(I personally don't even think he is the bargain of the year, but each to their own) what the hell does that make Lambert? He cost a million pounds for God's sake and look at goald per game ratio!

OK here's my thoughts (if you care)-

I would love to see a "Statement" signing- what do you mean? What I mean is, when we signed Lambert in league 1 it was a statement of intent but it also lifted everyone and sent a message. Love it. This does so many things.
When we signed Billy Sharp it did the same thing.

So... I would like us to get at least one BIG signing that can damage defenses in the Premier League- maybe Rodrigues for say $6 million. Or, maybe Michu.

And then after that- 1 Center Defender who is better than fonte or hooiveld. (brings them up, and brings competition)

And then one "Scrapper" not really sure who fits that mould, and would love to hear from you guys on this.

And then 1 utility player who can play right wing or right defence.

Thoughts??

Get rid of (with appreciation)-
Barnard, Forte, Seaborne, Butterfield... who else??

Saint Dennis says...

No point in signing Scott Dann unless Roger Johnson is signed as well - they were outstanding together with Birmingham City, who nose-dived after Dann was injured. Probably a waste with what Saints already have.

Japanese sport has changed a lot over the last thirty or so years. I believe it was very common for sportmen to play through injuries, not to save face but not to let their team or coach or whatever down. In some cases, I believe players were told they would not be picked if they didn't play. I don't think this is common now.

Of course, there may be exceptions.

I must admit I haven't followed J-league for quite some time, but I'm not aware of any serious injuries.
My friend in Toyko tells me it is common in Japan for sports people to cover up injuries so they don't lose face.

Would you agree with that?
Japanese sport has changed a lot over the last thirty or so years. I believe it was very common for sportmen to play through injuries, not to save face but not to let their team or coach or whatever down. In some cases, I believe players were told they would not be picked if they didn't play. I don't think this is common now.

Of course, there may be exceptions.
Thanks. I think it probably does apply to my friend, who is an accomplished over sixties table tennis player. His brother in law told me he confessed to repetitive strain injuries in a private alcoholic moment.

Lively start to the day.

I wouldnt mind betting that the first named acquisition isn't on anyones list today. I love the way that Nigel and Nicola work.

However I would love the club to get just ONE massive signing - someone of the status and calibre of the Keegan signing all those years ago. I still remember not believing it until I saw it on the news in the evening.

I expect we will sign some strong players in several positions.. but just ONE MASSIVE name would be wonderful .. It wont happen this season though. .we need to establish ourselves .. but I can dream.

I don't mind this thread - it gives us something to banter about. I've had the occasional pop at the Echo in the past but overall they do what they do adequately. It's only the obvious gap fillers that annoy me now and then.

I know Marc Muniesa would be a fantastic acquisition but what will our wage structure be like and how much will that continually affect us.

I still think that new players will be almost unheard of , but well scouted , and up for it.
Hope we sign a few players that our posters can actually spell correctly, we haven't got a good track record for that, I think Fox is the only one they have got 100% right so far.

Davis, Buttercup, Font, Hoofelt, Focks, Goolie, Sniderman, Chaplowe, Llallanana, Lampard and Sharpe (subs: Balekowsky, Martyn, Richardston, Derridar, Tadordinary Lee (Cheoung), Punction and O'Connalley.

I agree that a Massive sigining would be great, but I dont think it can happen until we are consistently avhieving a top 10 finish in the prem when money will be available to pay huge wages that a massive sigining would demand. This could happen in 3-4 seasons though, look at Stoke, I think they are in their 4th year now & they got a Big (literally) signing in Peter Crouch who of course is an ex-england international proven to bang in goals for premiership sides.

So all we need to do is finish in the top 10, get into europe win a cup or 2 & we'll be able to get lots of massive signings, not just 1!!! Simples.

Thoughts??

Get rid of (with appreciation)-
Barnard, Forte, Seaborne, Butterfield... who else??
not that much of a statement with lambert he was to big .so we got him a lot fitter later ,that is why we only paid what we did pardew must take credit lambert hammond harding guly connolly barnard who would not let go jaidi early on important last season .pardew built the spine and made a statement with all those players .its never been a 1 man team .we already had lallana snierderlin in davis .nigel importantly is most important signing was chaplow .and with pardew putting alex in early we were able to get 12million in the coffers ,to help fund cork sharp fox ,there is better left backs in fox .he may be a good option in midfield with his delivery ,seabourn has pace which you would need now .fonte as struggled with pacey forwards ,i would retain at the moment with 1 year contracts .then if we do want to move them on .we would get a transfer fee .that has to make sense

Speculation will be rife until as such time as NC/NA confirm signings in their usual quiet professional manner. However I cannot believe that a lot of work has not been carried out in anticipation of promotion, I just hope that who ever joins the club does so to allow ample time to integrate and start the season as a fully operational and together squad.

I think Connelly, Jaidi, Holmes, Forte, Bart, possibly Forecast and Dickenson.
Forecast to possibly replaced by Dovey.
Bart by a young keeper like Schemical
With maybe 5 outfield players mainly from abroad.
Holmes and Forte have been on loan. Jaidi and Connelly have been good servants but have not really figured, nor has Dickinson. Forecast has never been in the picture really. Whilst if Bart has not staked his claim in the lower leagues he is unlikely to in the prem.

When relegated from the championship, we had a young French player, who was told it would effect his chances of playing for France. Yet a young lad who came to us at 18 in our darkest season, who had no reason to be loyal, stayed with us when it was easier to leave. The offers were there. Thankfully his country saw his talent and he continued playing internationally.

Nearly my exact post from last week, loyalty does have it rewards.
Look at Dann and Johnson as two examples of players showing no loyalty to Birmingham, look where it's got them, relegation again.

Another one had to feign injury as he was a sometime Baseball player, and the World Series didn't happen too often, it was always against Uncle Sam and he was down the pecking order, supremely fit bloke called Kelvin Mouly Fan BHA Never Moans always selected as Defensive Back Stop.
Should OV said:
Well done Echo, more ins than outs on your listing...you and The Saints are clearly doing something right...Watt IS people's views?
PS everyone wants an aggresive talented midfield dynamo, and they just don't exist in today's game...more's the pity.
I would settle for a midfielder who can control the pass and pass through defences... then we also need a right winger and a centre half,,, keeper can wait..

Southampton owners convert £33m loan into shares

Strangely enough posted 29/3/2012

Was a radio solent interview and can still be found on the BBC web.

So immediately debt is transferred to shares and we get the story Saints are for sale.
Whilst the actual interview leads to the opposite view.

Also remember if the club were for sale then Nicola has people lined up ready to buy.

You buy a club for 14m that was in its premiership days valued at around 54m. So its value must be around that again. Plus the club has just got 40m.
You are a multi-national business like Lieberr. You have invested 33m and with all the above you are going to sell for 25m. Total cow pat. But then that sums up Goal.com.

The lose incured by the club is far less than anticipated. It includes the buying of the club and the development.

Someone read the article and thought this sounds good. We can get mileage out of this.

New rulings in the Premiership coming in during the next couple of years state, that clubs must be free from debt or face european bans and transfer embargo's
New rules in the championship about clubs being in debt. makes sense to change it into shares.
Note once these new rules come in clubs cannot, be subsidised by their owners. Other than facility improvement. So on wage and transfers they must live within their means.

So what the future holds who knows.
But to Goal.com as normal.
Cowpats, cowpats,cowpats.

didn't realise Dovey had gone, is still on Saints player list.

Thank you Morgan.

To Kelvin
Who could of opted for West Ham during our darkest hour. Stayed with us and was league 1 best keeper and championship best keeper.
To Adam
Who could of gone to most clubs but stayed through all the heartbreak.

You guys are the soul of this club. We can never thank you enough for that loyalty and the rewards now are justly deserved.
I have not forgotten all those that came afterwards.Thank you all
Yet these three stayed through administration and the darkest days this club has ever seen. When it would have been easy to get up and run. You who kept the faith when chaos reigned.
Thank you again.
I stayed loyal and faithful too. All my mates laughed...but who's laughing now?

If it was possible to sign top celebrity players, I'd like Billy Whiz from the Beano up front and Desperate Dan from the Dandy in central defence. (The Road Runner is not available).

can't see Surman fitting in with what we have attacking wise,, he gets too far forward too often, he has done well with Norwich but there are always player behind him in the final third. So I can't see him coming back given Sir Ricky's deeper role these days and our other attacking options, certainly not if Guly stays.....

another point about Guly, almost everyone I speak to agrees that he can only flourish in the Prem as part of a 4-5-1 formation.... Anything else and we would loose too much possession in midfield.... On recent performances I would agree..

no I agree he is not lazy... but in that game he did what he does too often IMHO... he drifts and looses his bearings... 4-5-1 gives him more licence... towards the end of this season he was increasing looking like a square peg in a round hole... he reminds me of Kenwyn Jones in the way he finds space but in a 4-4-2 in the Prem I see problems... still.... you have forgotten the microscopic analysis we are in for in the Prem and MOTD... but roaming in midfield and passing the ball over your own head to where you are supposed to be is not tactics,, its obvious stuff. If he is to play his "own" game then he can't do it as he did in the prem... again ... imho... other will not agree but I think our 12/13 season will rise and fall on the ability to keep the ball for period in the middle 3rd.

agree again... he did... but for me the Prem means he has to have a more constrained role or be a part of a more fluid attack....in which case ( getting back to my original point ) I can't see Surman being a requirement.... Guly is our marmite player, you either love him or hate him. Every team has a player like Guly.
It will be interesting to see who will shine in the Premier League, I bet there will be someone who we all think hasn't a chance but will take the Premier League by storm, someone like Guly or De Ridder.

I saw some video footage of De Ridder a couple of years back, he has no way shown that form yet with Saints and he has not had a good enough run... He is the guy I reckon could rip up defenders in the Prem...

I noticed that I have received some critical comments about who should move on. I will justify my actions by saying that some of the players on the list are out of contract at the end of the season. Both Ryan Dickson and Jonathan Forte are not good enough and thats way they were out on loan most of the season. Also as someone who has supported the Saints for over forty years certain players who should be role models for young people have been very poor representives of this club.

Also slate me if you will, but I am thinking about the future of this Great club. I understand Reading have axed 13 players already including Brian Howard.
I read in the press the other day that Southampton Norwich and Reading are all after Snodgrass from Leeds United. It would fill the gap because neither Chaplow and Guly are natural players in that position.

I also heard on Sky that Rodriguez only has one year left on his contract. Thus value wise his value drops . Eight or Six Million is out of the question for a player with only a year left. Prehaps Mr Howe should have taken the money last year. In the current market with one year left his value would be between 2.5 million to 3million. Come January it could down to 1.5 million as he would have only six months left on his contract. Nicola and Nigel are very shrewed and prehaps they might do a deal later in the year if Everton don,t sign him. Curtis Davies is a possible addition depending on Birmingham in the play offs. He is a good strong centre have who has played in the Premier league still in his twenties and would be a good competition for Hoover Maritn and Fonte. Buying from the Championship can work. When Big Chris was manager he brought wisely from the old second division and third division. The likes of Cockerill, Forrest, Flowers, Clarke, Hobson, Moore, Adams, and Richard Hall all played their part in keeping us in the top flight. Also Nicholl had faith to blend them with youth. Such as Le tisser, Shearer, Maddison, tthe Wallace twins, Blake, Maskell , Steve Davis, and Andy Cook, Jeff Kenna and of course Baneli along with a couple of non league players Dodd from Bath City and Jon Gittens from Padget Rovers. Thus with the 18 to 20 players who played last season, some highly talented players from the under 21s and under 18s plus 6 good additions we will cope. Previous managers be the days of Sky football money did it ie Big MC and Chris. I was last at because I suggested a budget of 15 Million for players, considering we spent nearer 10 Million last season.
I seem to remember Dav Jones had a budget of 10 Million back in the season 1998 to 1999 and in those days we were still at the Dell.
At then end of the day I have every belief in Nigel and Nicola to take us forward this season. If Nigel prepares the squad like he did last summer we will be off to a flyer.

I like the bit about pledging 100 English poundings.

Is this a subtle referrence to The Skates' next 100 defeats or a slightly rude referrence to what she'd get if she made it to (or 'in') Skatesville.

Either way, one might say that, with comments like that, she's laid herself wide open.

I like this post, mainly because the old man gets a mention. Cheers.

I maybe wrong of course but I think people who asume we are bringing in 6 new players are waaaaaay off the mark.
I think NA will just fix the obvious problems and start the season knowing he has got a squad that can play together. A right winger, holding central midfielder and a centre half... I would be amazed if he brings in 6 new players. Also people seem to forget that finishing second in the championship on the amount of points we had pretty much equates us to Premiership side placed 2/3rds down the table. So what we have now is good enough to compete, we don't need an overhaul, just 3 obvious holes...

I would agree with you... but if you remember, NA was quite down during the celebrations and said something about "how people were going to be missed". It was thought that he was refering to himself, moving elsewhere, but he made clear that was not the case... so it only leaves some of his brave players, that he rated so much but do not cut it in the PL. Summarising, I do think that NA plans to buy around 6 new players (though maybe not all for the A-Team).

Yes EL Santo good post.
He said over the next weeks there would be some heartbreaking decisions over his squad.
I think he will bring in 6 players, which is what he did last season.
We play a squad system so it does not mean they will all be in the first team together. Remember we can pick 18 players on a match day.
We are allowed to play players under 21 in addition to the 25 man squad. So there is no need to push them into the squad when we can use them when needed.
I do not see us leaving ourselves short on squad players. So I think only 6 or so will go.
I am not sure where the facts are that state we would of finished 2/3rds down the premiership.
I would go with the fact that we only took 11pts out of thirty against the other top 6 sides and had a minus goal difference as a better indication of where we are and what we need to do.

If you look at FA cup tie stats over the years then its safe to say that the top two in the second tier if pretty clear of those 7th and below are about on par with the teams 14-17 in the 1st tier. Our poor run-in was due to lack of depth in our squad. So yes it does make sense that 3 key signings and 2 or 3 cover signings will do the job. One rumour I have heard regarding Guly is that a championship club would be willing to table a very good bid to secure his services.... if true then its situations like that that may make NAs decision a tad easier to make.... I hope it is not true and we keep him, I would like to see him cut it in the Prem...

Agree. We were defensively not strong enough against the big teams. I think our full backs can be improved. NA knows football, his squad and the market a billion times better than I do, so I won't even dare suggest names. I wil just keep my fingers crossed... and hope we are runners up for a third year in a row!

Big fan of Lukaku. I see him as a younger Drogba, without his bad habits. Whether he'd be willing to mainly be a sub and to leave Chelsea I'm not sure, but having him, Lambert, Sharp and Lee as a strike-force would be class I reckon.

Good morning all.
I know there is great debate currently about who comes and who goes and we generally are in a post season promotion afterglow.
I feel it is at this time we should give a thought for others, who are less fortunate than ourselves.
They feel that they have been badly treated by everybody.

Poeple told them that they had to pay their bills.
They had 10 points deducted, without any consideration at all.
They have had to get rid of players and staff.
On the pitch they felt to have had loads of bad luck.
Cr-p referees!
Then relegation.

Luckily some of this was offset by the FILL THE PARK initiative which was "masterminded" by the "best fans in the South"

Saints fans are renown for their charitable consideration of others.
i.e. We even gave them 2 points to help them, at risk of our own promotion push.

Keep up the good work saints supporters.

ALWAYS REMEMBER ABOUT THOSE LESS FORTUNATE.

Well, Slugs, it's that low pressure over the continent, I reckon. It's sucking in all that wet weather and the wind speed is making it feel even colder. Good news for the hosepipe ban though!!!etc
we don't have a hosepipe ban in southampton (yet), left my hose running for 4 weeks now in an attempt to get one (to pee off the gardeners and car washers) but it keeps flipping raining !
We don't have one in Manchester either (god's been trying to drown the place for about 1,000 years to no discernable effect so it would be a bit rich) but the papers say I should be worried SICK about it.

Is there anyone here who does have one?

Is this inane or off topic? I don't think so...
Not at all off topic. Few will have missed your subtle allusion to Wet Spam's fluid status pending the Wembley match; the severe lack of liquidity in the Portsmouth area and the news drought prior to the transfer window opening.

Purely as an off topic bonus, it also raised in my mind the question as to why Noah allowed two wasps on his ark.

I don't know who we will sign any more than anybody else does. But my intuition tells me if Saints are in the bottom 6 in mid November Nigel Adkins will be fired and replaced by Roberto Di Matteo. Di Matteo thinks whatever success he has with Chelsea won't be good enough for him to be retained for next season. And I think Cortese would jump at the chance to bring him to Saints.

Nigel won't deserve it and I don't want it to happen, but I think it is a real possibility.

It will be interesting to see how much money is spent in the window. If it is relatively low I think Nigel's days are numbered.

the only way NA will be removed is if he fails to achieve the minimum in the first half of the season, which I would assume to be 3 points from every 6 contested from all but the MU,MC,AR&CH. That would have us mid table and it would be steady as she goes....

The lack of confidence being shown by some in NA is disappointing. His results in two seasons are simply brilliant.
I know he's unproven at Premiership level. So is RDM !! I know we will be expected to be the new boys getting thumped by big name teams every week and I know that managers get the blame. But I doubt we will be in the realm of changing just because a big name is available.
The "big name" RDM who has had a smidgeon of success with one of the most expensive teams in the world is very lucky to have a taken over that team even for a few weeks. He won't stay there and he wouldnt know what to do at our club.

Lay off Adkins, give the man a chance to show he is a future big name manager. He deserves more respect after the success he has given this club.

The problem being that there is no news to discuss, the silence from the Club is deafening as usual, we just have to wait in anticipation and meanwhile talk among ourselves, speculation is OK up to a point, but there are only a limited number of fish in the sea, and the best ones don't always rise to the bait, no doubt we are trawling the oceans but until the right ones are hooked we just have to wait on the quayside until or boat comes in.

I fully expect NA to flourish in the Prem.... I am predicting 13th finish next season based on what we have done and what we many do. Saints have struggled when we started changing managers every 5 minutes... Even if we start slowly in the Prem ( which I don't think will happen ) , the pressure should not be put on NA, supporters need to realise that given 2 or 3 good-to-very good seasons in the Prem NA WILL BE a "big name manager". That said all professional managers have to deliver, its what they are paid highly for. So there will be sensible targets and I am pretty confident 3 from 6 points from 15 games from the the first 19 is reasonable.... It does not need to be a target that makes or breaks a managers job but there has to be a reality button. I think NA and all but two or three of the players ready for the Prem, and with 2 or 3 key signings we will surprise a few teams ....

As the person who suggested that RDM may take over from Nigel Adkins I should point out I wasn't knocking him.

I am very happy with what he has done. My comments were based on three things. One an article I read in The Times which said RDM was a personal friend of Nicola Cortese and Cortese had consulted him before he decided to take the job with Saints.

Two, the owners of the club, in my opinion will want to do one of two things with Southampton F.C.
Move it forward rapidly and get it into the top half of the Premier League and keep it there, and improve it's playing staff so Europe is a possibility.
Or stay in the Premier League and sell the club on for a good profit.

To achieve either of those things, if you look at other clubs, there is a need to employ a manager with more
experience than Nigel to achieve that. Unless Cortese is willing to let Nigel develop at his own pace, say like Moyes at Everton. Personally I don't think Cortese is that type of man. I think he requires close to instant results and is driven by tight time scales and stretch targets linked to bonuses. After all Nigel is our third manager since Cortese became CEO. I also think Nigel's end of the season comments about leaving the club at some point, wasn't just a throw away remark. I believe Cortese will have set him a stretch target for next season and won't be happy with just say finishing 13th or thereabouts. Where as I and probably many Saints fans would be happy with that level of performance and hope to see an improvement the following season
I hope that explains my earlier comment, it wasn't a lack of respect. I think what he has achieved is fantastic. But I do think if we are not in the top 10 by say November he will be vulnerable. I would like to see him stay and develop. But I guess I just don't think CEO's who have worked for Swiss investment banks think that way!

RDM was also successful with MK Dons, WBA and as well as Chelsea.

guly is quality , i can't believe some people are watching the same player as me ....... ps , nigel seems to agree !
hmmmmmm.... Guly is quality or dire, nothing inbetween. Pompey away was incredible, the guy did not have a clue, a week or two earlier brilliant... I can't make my mind up why but thats how I see him. I have a hunch he will be awesome next season in the Prem. But can't see him, Surman, Sir Ricky, Lallana etc etc in the same squad..
we all have off days ...... how people can say guly is lazy is beyond my comprehension , the prem will suit him so i got no worries there .
no I agree he is not lazy... but in that game he did what he does too often IMHO... he drifts and looses his bearings... 4-5-1 gives him more licence... towards the end of this season he was increasing looking like a square peg in a round hole... he reminds me of Kenwyn Jones in the way he finds space but in a 4-4-2 in the Prem I see problems... still.... Nigel will not need my help in that ... ;0)
You mustn't form opinions on the strength of one game, or you're in danger of becoming one of them (down the road)...if you know what i mean?

Georges comments are unfair and unwise. Nigel is the finest manager in many years and given the right resources will do the business. With the new rules on debt coming into play in Europe. Clubs now will have to live with in their means and Southampton are well set up. Rather be a steady she goes club and have monster debts like The two Manure sides and Chelsea and Spurs with Redknapp in charge one thing debt. We will not be taking lectures from poopy. Nigel is a shrewed manager and he sets prepares his teams to be winner. I would be happy with mid table and a league cup final win. George you are unfair and unjust .With Villa and Liverpool about to give their managers the boot, Adkins will be top of their lists.
Just wait until 26th of May the day the window opens and a few rabbits will coming out the hat. No has been players but players who will young and hungry and will be with us for many years. Southampton don't do short term any more. We will the Kings of the South.

Glasgow Saint says Daily Record reports Steve Davis is going to Southampton for 2 million Record usally is right. Davis is Quality best mid fielder in Scotland very pacey would leave Hammond for dead. Scores goals. Capt 50 times by Northern Ireland. Played for both Fulham and Aston Villa. He is Premier league standard. Normally if Club like Rangers were not in financial meltdown they would want possibly 6 million for him. Still only 27. He clearly would be a bargain at 2 million and twice the player Hammond is. This could be the first Rabbit out of the hat. Saw Hooper score 5 goals yesterday, my late Granny who at 87 was cutting down 30 ft trees could have scored the goals. I think he is too much of a gamble. We would be better looking at Rodriguez who only has one year left on his contract so 8 Million which has been quoted is wide of the mark for a player nearly out of contract. Rhodes could be a good. Punt. I hear there is an out of Contract striker look for a move back to St Marys( he certainly has loads of experience it would be his third spell with us anybody guess who I am talking about)

Not at all. You, sir, would do well to heed the words of Soviet dissident Yevgeny Yevtushenko:

"When truth is replaced by silence, the silence is a lie."
I use to think the simple truth always shines through, but then I heard Pinnochio (he whose nose grows longer when he fibs) say "My nose is growing longer" And then I thought, well, if that was a true statement his nose wouldn't be growing longer, so it would be a lie. But if it was a lie, his nose would grow longer - and of course if it did grow longer that would mean he was telling the truth, but....and so on and so forth.

I just can't get to the truth of this matter and hope there will be some Saints news soon to take my mind off the problem.

To achieve either of those things, if you look at other clubs, there is a need to employ a manager with more experience than Nigel to achieve that. Unless Cortese is willing to let Nigel develop at his own pace, say like Moyes at Everton. Personally I don't think Cortese is that type of man. Some ludicrous suggestions on incoming players. We will sign a CB , send bart out on loan and get a teenage keeper, one CM , a right winger and a marquee ST like JRod. nigel will stick with the team that has got us 2 promotions and held uniteds reserves in the fa cup a few years back. Lambert and lee/sharpe will be a decent strikeforce with Lallana giving us something special if the games stale. Schneidlein remains on of our best players and one of the best holding mids in the prem. Unfortunately I feel he'll leave us next summer when arsenal/barce comes calling but hes been a great servant. if were wishing for a leftfield singing Del Piero is out of contract and although hideously unlikely he would come/ we can afford him, cortese has links in Italy so you never know !

Seedhouse the Unrepentant says...
7:13am Wed 16 May 12

Nigel has proved with back to back promotions that he is a top manager. This club has been crying out for management stability since Nichol. When AP was sacked and replaced by NA the one thing that was definitely in AP's favour was his far greater contacts in the game, this was a known fact so must now not be used against Nigel. Corteses contacts in Europe and Sid Littles contacts here will be crucial. Nigel will of course be linked to ex Scunny players - Sharp and Hooper.

You miss my point. I am not campaigning in favour of RDM. I am saying what I believe could happen if things don't go well.

if you recall when Pardew was here he was told his target was to get into the play-offs. He didn't but he won the JPT and we started with -10 in the league. But he was told winning the JPT was not substitutional for not getting into the play-offs. That's why I think he will be vulnerable if we are struggling in November.

I think if we were relegated he would be sacked, despite the fantastic work he has done.

I'm not sure who I want to win in the play-off final. I'd like Blackpool to stay down so we could sign Ince or Phillips, but I'd also like West Ham to stay down and see whether their finances and arrogant fans can handle it.

On RDM, he wasn't a success at West Brom, yes they played decent football, but he got sacked because of poor results. At MK Dons he did finish 3rd, but lost to the underdogs Scunthorpe (managed by guess who, Adkins!). I think we should at least give Adkins a chance as opposed to starting to contemplate possible replacements if he were to leave for any reason (luckily I don't think Liverpool will be after him this time).

You never could get to the truth because as a common procedure these days Rhinoplasty could fool you into believing his nose had not grown when indeed it had, now that you are aware of this the veracity of his comments would be sorely tested as you know he could be telling the truth or have had a nose job!

Have you got a date for the apocolypse Osprey? I was going to buy a lot of stuff this summer, but I think maybe I should wait. There'll be some amazing "End of the World Sale" offers in the run up to this catastrophe. I'd have thought 90% off just for starters and maybe 99% off in the "Everything must go - final week!" I'd also like to keep a look out and be the one to identify the last new thing that ever happens.
You will have to Google for it, I have no idea of the exact date, but will be really annoyed if it does happen, all that money for a Season Ticket I expect to get full value.

We now only exist in our own imaginations, so whatever you would like to happen, can and WILL happen. So just THINK of something .. and it WILL happen. Saints have just won the Champions League beating Barcelona 7-0 last night at Wembley. I can't get to the open topped parade because a large coachload of playboy bunnies has just arrived outside my house and I'm going to be busy for a while.

If thats the case.I suspect it is because he feels let down by England.
He was the best centre forward in the Prem all last season.
I expect it's the same old thing, he plays for a small provincial football club.
He knows he can make mega- bucks playing for so called big teams, win things and be selected to play for England.
I think the selection of AOC, and Andy Carrol prove this point.
IMO. Carrol, in particular must be a real kick in the n^ts, he only played well in his last 2 games, one of these as sub.

What must Rickie be thinking? He also was overlooked and he's better than Holt.

I have to be honest not one of the above names from the Echo's sources fills me with much excitement or confidence. Too many has-beens and too many used to the loosing mentality , from teams taken drops down..... We need som up -and comers- but some solid experienced -WINNERS - at Southampton.... We need the SHILTON/KEEGAN/ARMST
RONG/WRIGHT/DENNIS/ CASE/WILLIAMS type of quality for the future, If we are to make an IMPACT as Cortese has promised - if we are to do more than make up the numbers - flair and quality are a must... that list above ( bar some silly names ) doesn't float my boat!

Suprised about the manager talk- we have ( most sensible Saints fans) been praying an begging for stability in the management quarter. Alex Ferguson had one the league with Aberdeen, he went to Man U as a hopeful. His early part of his reign was shaky- but they stuck with it - the rest is history - but even then it took time to get his first championship win... let alone the rest. Time. its key. Lawrie Mac was relegated first season in charge.. then won the FA cup and secured promotion 2 seasons later. Time -patience- This is something no one has at the moment- we need to get some, be pleased with NA - who knows what sort of manager he is yet to become!! Look at all the BIG NAME managers that have failed..big name means nothing, and pride is before a crash!!

Lineker and Darren Anderton are not currently 32 years old are they?

He was on 40k a week at Man U. Doubt he'll demand that anywhere else. Would be a great upgrade from Connolly!

Alicesdad says...
1:46pm Mon 28 May 12

Just to be clear, I do not dislike or hate Owen. I just think he is the wrong choice for the club.

We also all know that NC carefully weighs up the financial options. For example, we got Connolly on a free, for a short contract and NOT a premiership wage.

Owen wants premiership football with the same salary to keep his earnings and profile up before his flits off to somewhere like Japan or America. The sums do not add up for him to be a realistic choice and his injury record makes him high risk. Everyone knows this, it is not a secret.

NC was a Swiss banker and if there's one thing he will avoid it's a high risk like this. That much is absolutley certain !!!!!!

Simples.

We can speculate on the player purchase front for many weeks until tangible news emerges, but one thing is for sure we MUST buy another goalkeeper and NA must be burning the midnight oil and tyre rubber making sure that this position is covered soon.

The Ince deal looks like it would be very good business, if it's true. We offload a previous problem player, and get someone with real potential. Fingers crossed on that one.

I dont dislike him, I certianly do not hate him, I wish he never went to United and went to a top 6 club and tried to prove he was good enough for England again.

I just dont like the idea of signing somebody who hasnt played a full season for what? 5 years?

We've been signing Championship players for the past 2/3 seasons. Think we'll aim higher this time!
My point being, I reckon we should be buying players who feel they have a point to prove in the premiership rather than some player who feels he is big time alas James Beattie

He was on 40k a week at Man U. Doubt he'll demand that anywhere else. Would be a great upgrade from Connolly!
Surely it will be a matter of market forces. If we offered him say 15k a week and no other team bettered it, his choice is 15k a week or retire. He can't demand 20 30 40k if no one is prepared to pay it.

Michu was the strong rumour within the club so I guess he will be the first one.
Absolutely. Do not think Saints can afford a slow start to the season therefore the team has to gel from the off. This is more likely to be acheived if the new signings (and surely there will be some) are onboard asap in order to allow time to integrate into the Saints way and the 1st XI determined and settled.

Also read the article regarding, that we are going to bid for Ince. I think there could be some truth in this as Nigel was at the play off final viewing certain targets. I am sure Holloway would love to have Puncheon as part of the deal. The Echo seem to have run out of stories related to Saints. Just when we are or relaxing in the sun watching England under achieving at the European Championships Nigel and Nicola, will out of the blue sign sign 6 players from around the world that no one has heard of and they will be real gems.

I honestly don't hold much of an opinion about the idea of Michael Owen joining us, though I couldn't help but wiki his stats and work out some averages of my own:

-550 professional appearances (including International).
-277 professional goals (including International).
- Means an average of 0.50 goals a game or 1 goal in every 2 games.
-15 years of professional football
- Which means an average of 36 games per year
- and 18.46 goals per year.

For some one that has suffered from a lot of injuries and has been sidelined in recent years at the likes of Man U despite being fit and injury free for a while, you cant argue those are still good statistics.

Don't get me wrong he will still demand wages that do not fit in with our budget, in terms of the amount of talent we wish to bring in and spend upon, but with statistics like that a fit Owen......well speaks for it's self if he is given the opportunity!

(I am aware that a lot of his goals did come from his earlier years, just look past it all you fact haters out there)

Let's cut the crap we need a new centre back to either replace Fonte or be a back up (Zak knight or Scott dann) a replacement for hammond as he's a donkey ( jake Livermore or Benitez ) a right wing in blackpools Phillips as we have no one that plays with the team and possibly matt Jarvis and put Lallana behind lambert as schniederlin can't cut it. We need a new stricke in j rod to fill out the team as every prem side has at least 5 or 6 for every position and possibly put lee on the wing

Yeah I was just giving examples of the standard we need. Chaplow hasn't been the same since his injury at Bristol Suomi think we need to replace all the midfield we have. Cork may be too slow but could cut it Hammond is a donkey and has to go and I don't see what schniederlin does. If the rumours are true we are looking at the best the championship has to offer and what the spl has to offer. Liam trotter Stephan Davies jake Livermore are all on our list but with j rod why are we buying people that are worse than who we already have that's what we did 7 years ago when we had a squad of 44 with progressively worse people.

Whilst I am not convinced about Owen if he's on a free and doesn't want to much money he might be worth a punt. He is only 2 years older than Rickie and is the third highest scorer of all time for England behind Charlton and Lineker ffs!
Wow, lets sign lineker then, surely he must be better seeing he scored more goals. Whilst we are at it, lets bring in Darren Anderton.
Lineker and Darren Anderton are not currently 32 years old are they?

How old are Scholes and Giggs?

I agree that youth is predominantly the way forward but our best teams also had some experienced players in them - Ball, Keegan, Case, George, Mills, Watson etc.
Seedhouse,
I understand your stance about Michael Owen's age.
32 is not old today for a professional footballer.
You mention Scholes,Giggs both have had their injuries, in their time.
I think the difference is they no longer need pace where they now play.
Owen's great strength was speed to get beyond defences.
His previous long injury record, now prevents him from doing this at the top level.
If Saints were to sign him it could only to cover for Billy Sharp as a penalty box poacher.
Can he stay fit?
Track record in recent years say's no!
Coyr.
Your right about Michael Owen as he is another David Connolly and will be in the treatment room more than minutes on the pitch.

WE ARE THE MIGHTY SOUTHAMPTON.

We saw millwall off and will do the same to chelski next year - no problem ... and as for the QPR or ars*nil fans - don't make me laugh :O) LOL

We also won't put up with wet spam chanting - Who the f*cking hell are we ...

LOL RedArmy1 posts are a must for any Saints fan in need of a pep talk - I'd even go so far as to say Adkins should paste his posts on the changing room walls to remind players of the value of positive thinking before going out to face the likes of Man U..

In m view schniederlin does nothing he gets the ball takes, too long to decide what to do with it and then plays it back to the defence I hope we replace our midfield except Lallana. Schniederlin is used on a regular basis, if the premier league clubs were interested he would already have been scouted

With you 100% Spiderman is one of the few players we have who is sure to cut it at premiership level. He is technically gifted and is the only player we currently have who can switch play.I may be in the minority but I think he is more likely to a premiership player than Lallana.I fear that against better defenders Adam may struggle. As for all these people calling for us to sign players like Kalou, they are not in our way outside our payscale.

Schniederlin is awful imo too! I've kept my eye on him during games and I can't see what all the fuss is about! He's very average. His passing is his only good attribute, he cannot tackle, can't score goals, can't add assists. Why do people think all of a sudden he'll be great in a higher league? He's supposed to have potential(?), well where is this potential because in all the years he's been here i've never seen it, i've never been impressed with him.

I have a feeling come the end of the season Morgan will be in the running for player of the season. The more time he will get on the ball will make him a better player as will his experience at lower leagues.

Vordhosbn says...

I can't believe some people are criticising Scheiderlin, he's easily our best central midfielder, he runs the show, reminds me of Dietmar Hamann the way he strings everything together, all our good moves go through him. It's no coincidence that we struggled when he was injured towards the end of the season, comes back against Coventry and we hit them for 4, the only criticism of him that I accept is that he doesn't score enough goals. But he's still young, I think people forget that because we've had him for ages, but he will be a class act in the Premier League because the pitches are better and teams will give him too much room to work his magic.

Chaplow is much better and cost £1,750,000 less than morgan.
