Southampton's attendances among the best
12:28pm Friday 4th May 2012 in Saints News
Saints fans
SAINTS should comfortably be a mid-table Premier League team next season – at least in terms of their support.
The bumper crowds at the back end of the latest promotion winning campaign saw Saints finish in second place behind West Ham in the highest average attendances chart of the Championship season.
And their average of 26,419 per game would see them 12th in the current Premier League averages.
Crowds have shot up 17 per cent at St Mary’s this season, following on from last term’s 22,160 average in League 1.
The last four attendances at the ground this season were all above the 30,000 mark.
Even established teams such as Fulham, West Brom, Bolton, Blackburn and Wigan trail in the wake of Saints’ loyal fan base.
Promoted sides QPR and Swansea are also well down on the St Mary’s averages.
Saints are sure to see their attendances boosted even further on their return to the top flight after a seven-year absence.
Whilst it is unlikely they can regularly repeat the St Mary’s record 32,363 crowd they had for the final game of the campaign against Coventry, due to the added segregation of having an often full ten per cent allocation going to the away team, they should sell out for the majority of games.
Previously in their Premier League campaigns it was generally only the midweek matches, when people struggle to get there from work, that attendances dropped from capacity.
Assuming Saints were averaging anywhere between 28,000-32,000 next season, that would be enough to see them in 11th place in the Premier League stats based on this campaign.
It again underlines how well Saints have been supported during this season and the kind of crowds they can expect next term.

Question is, if SMS was enlarged to, say, 40,000, would we get 35,000+ every week? I'm not sure. The pricing structure would inevitably play a role.
As an interesting comparison, can anyone remember what size crowds were when many were boycotting matches in protest at Lowe?

Surely Nicola will already have plans to add more seats to our ground. We could fill 40-45,000. Im pretty sure Sunderland have the same type of stadium & their capacity is 49,000.

They have got me thinking about past talents and memories, I don’t want to think about the SFC future right now, because I believe the players in the present deserve a celebration period.
Oh Lord Marian Pahars, Where did we find him from .... top scouting on the Latvian front (was it Terry Cooper?), what a pocket rocket.
Anyone remember Ronnie Ekulund? silky skills ... should have stayed with us and had the surgery.
Egil Ostenstad and Eyal Berkovic – it was a grey shirt type of day eh Manchester Utd? I was there. (also when Franny scored).
Hope Tadanari Lee is not the same outcome as Agustín Delgado on the fitness front.
Looks like trips will be reunited to Hammers next season ... unless

Nonetheless, every penny counts and with an injection of imagination, the club could do a lot more to increase merchandise sales.
I've made some obvious suggestions to the commercial director eg a Jack Cork bottle stopper; Billy Sharp bread knife; a 'Jose Fonte Baby' stick-on tattoo for supporters' babies' foreheads; a Cheeky Chappers hair piece and a set of Tadanari Lee adhesive-infused chop sticks for ensuring you don't drop your rice or prawn balls.
But also fresh ideas viz:
* Rickie Lambert condom - red and white striped with 'Score Every Time' on the packet.
* For the ladies: Saintly Sanitary Towels with 'Come on you Reds' printed on them.
* Kelvin Davis incontinence pyjamas emblazoned with "Clean Sheet Every Time!"
* Saints car horn that blasts: LA LA LA LA LA LA LA LA
* An Echo Forum 'Auto Post' mechanism which automatically sends your posts according to Saints' result: eg 'Adkins Out!', 'Adkins - Legend'' 'Guly rubbish again', 'Lay off knocking Guly', 'I hate Manure and Fergie', 'Great post Confucious' etc.
And two add ons:
* Pompey toilet paper with PFC badge on every sheet.
And for your dog:
* Four foot high blue Pompey
p!ss post.
We can help the club right now by contributing our ideas.

A second tier should be put on one of the stands as soon as possible or we are going to face the problem that we did when we were last in the Premier League, with every home game sold out, leaving many fans unable to get tickets. To be really competitive in the Premier League you need a capacity of, at the very least, 36,000.

'we never score from corners.'
As for Pete, don't you think he'd be noticed if he wandered about covered in aboriginal art, dressed in a roo-leather thong, carrying a spear, deep in thought in Shirley Warren or Lords Hill?
I mean, the body art and spear would blend in and people would accept the thong ......... but deep in thought? That's gonna cause some cultural problems.

I lived in Japan for 8 years, and like the guys down under I had to stay up till the middle of the night to keep up. In the latter days, I had Sky Sports, so got to see games live several times a year, and a PC so i could listen to the commentary on line till god knows what time. In the early days I was there, before the internet got common enough to be affordable, I had a SW radio, and because my block of flats was in a dead spot for mobiles/radio signals, I had to go out, in the middle of winter, to the car park, and try and listen to the last 15 minutes of whatever was the chosen game and full time round up of results, on a very weak and crackly BBC World Service reception...I got to see two games live in those 8 seasons, but I felt as big a fan as any! Since then even though back in the UK work took me away, life got mental, a divorce and child support payments mean it's just not easy to go too often, but I dream every week about getting down there for a game. Problem is even if I can afford it, and can get down for the weekend, doesn't mean I can get a ticket, but no bleating-that's the sign of us being a successful club, and the only properly supported team in Hampshire!
One thing I do sometimes wonder when I do get to a game though is how quiet, and/or generally negative, a lot of the 'regulars' who are sat around me have seemed to be? I want them to get behind the team more, but then I suppose you pays your money....

A second tier should be put on one of the stands as soon as possible or we are going to face the problem that we did when we were last in the Premier League, with every home game sold out, leaving many fans unable to get tickets. To be really competitive in the Premier League you need a capacity of, at the very least, 36,000.
With a second tier on another stand for the following season, that could be expanded to over 40,000, if the demand is clearly there.
If you want a ticket by a season ticket or are you just a cherry picker?.
I really despise this grading of fans we get on here sometimes. We're all massive Saints fans, we all love the team, we all make our own sacrifices etc to follow the team, so because you can't go every week , or only once a season even, doesn't make you less of a fan.
Ideally, the knock-on benefit of attracting these people is both financial and to spark in them (especially the younger ones) a future desire that will continue even if there are bad times.
Anyway, yes, since coming to live (and eat and drink) in France, I'm certainly a bigger (girthwise) fan.

I remember it because I was sat on an orange box in the middle of an old coach journeying somewhere in deepest Indonesia in the late evening/middle of the night.
So many memories, such as dashing home drunk from a party in Melbourne in 1989 to hear 'And there's another goal at The Dell in the Southampton-Liverpoo

Bracknell: That snowy car park memory is a classic. I remember struggling at times to catch scores in silly places and having trouble with reception, often not knowing what frequency to catch the WS on etc. I was always delighted when I found some sort of FM link. In some parts of Australia, for instance, you could tune into a local station who'd keep all the scores coming, then go live to the featured match just as Alan Jones or whoever would utter those immortal words: 'And now we welcome World Service listeners wherever you are.' Great days! I was a 'girthwise' lesser fan back then :)

I love coming on here and feeling part of the true Saints support, even if getting there on a Saturday can be tricky.
Can't wait for next season, and will certainly do my best to get to a game when there's seats. I don't care who they're playing, as long as I can see the boys!
Last game I got to was last year in the FA cup against Cheltenham after all! Loved every minute of it, even if it was freezing cold, and a gimme of a game!!

My point is those who moan about not being able to get a ticket have had three seasons to watch games, but for one reason or another could not afford or make it to games, but all of a sudden when we are back in the prem they are able too.

It's the people that only go during the good times, fair weather fans, you can bet your life they are the people that will moan if they can't get a ticket for the like's of Man Utd etc , saying how unfair it is.
You are wrong about if we get 30000 every game ,I think it will be brilliant. I can remember some great night's the last time we were in the prem with full houses it was brilliant.
My only beef is people who moan about how unfair life is, there are a lot of things I would like to do but can't for one reason or another but I don't say how unfair it is. I bet you don't moan if you can't get a ticket for games you probably get on with it.
It's a bit like away games with a small allocation and big demand, not everyone who goes to away games can get one, the people who have been to most come first, which is the way it should be, rather than moan the attitude should be good luck to the lucky one's.
Lets get full houses next season, stay in the prem and then expand the ground to give others an opportunity. What I wouldn't want to see is money wasted on the ground and people not turning up, the atmosphere would be affected.
My intention was never to offend genuine fans just the good time Charlie's.

Look at Brightons ground, a lovely stadium but sited in a remote location.

If SMS can be expanded with local accomodation issue , I am all for that... but closing the main road into southampton on matchdays for 30 minutes is a joke and with 40-45K it will be an hour.... so that needs major sorting, there needs to be a train drop off.. etc etc ..

A football stadium would be worse.
Where would people go before games ?.
Look at grounds like Brighton, Colchester,Reading,C
oventry and Derby just to name a few, from what I can remember not a great deal of facilities around these grounds for great numbers, ie pubs etc.
I may be wrong.

I don't know what Nicola's plans, but maybe another tier on SMS is the most viable option once we are established again in the prem.
First off though, let's just enjoy being back in the prem & shock the big boys at a sold out SMS.

Sorry my friend I am not having a go at you, like you say you go when you can and 14 games isn't too bad is it.
As for enlargement, it seems to come back again and again to traffic problems. The solution seems to be a train station but I remember the idea was muted when SMS was built and Lowe said it just wasn't practical.
Does anyone know why? I've never understood the problem and hope it will one day happen.

Dont quote me on that but it is what I remember hearing when the stadium was going up. I believe they wanted to reopen the station but the cost was prohibitive.Shame as it would have saved me a 15 minute walk.

I'm sure we could get bigger gates for the top games but not sure what we would average. A bigger stadium great but not so big that for most games there are a lot of empty seats. Maybe 40k capacity would be good?

If I remember correctly expansion of SMS would take capacity to about 43,000: 5,000 Kingsland and 3,000 each Northam and Chapel.

Had the Ocean Village fiasco not happened, trains could have started from near there.
As I recollect, the railway station didn't go ahead because Lowe wasn't willing to fork out the sizable contribution to its cost that was being asked for from SFC. Perhaps now the financial situation is a bit different?
