Saints release big-name stars

David Connolly David Connolly

SAINTS have announced their annual retained list - with all of the club's out-of-contract first-team players being released.

David Connolly, Bartosz Bialkowski and Lee Holmes have been informed they will be let go, with their deals expiring this summer, and are now free to look for other clubs.

As expected, Radhi Jaidi, has confirmed his retirement from playing, although he is expected to be retained in some capacity by Saints, with further details to be announced on Monday.

Ryan Doble, Harlee Dean and Aarran Racine have also been released, as have scholars Jack Dovey, Steve Mowthorpe, Conor O'Sullivan and Dan Bowman.

A statement on the club's website said: "Southampton Football Club would like to thank all of the players released for their dedicated service to the club."

Academy players James Ward-Prowse, Calum Chambers, Luke Shaw and Jack Stephens will all be officially promoted to the first-team next season.

Also, four scholars - Matt Young, Joe Curtis, Bevis Mugabi and Chris Johns - have been offered professional deals, while under-16s captain Jason McCarthy has accepted a scholarship and professional contract.

All the best!

Thank you Radhi and David for your contributions too!

No surprises with those released, Bart confidence just seemed shot to pieces in the Blackpool game, he didn't know when to kick it catch it! Just needs to play regular 1st football somewhere down the leagues to get his confidence up and he may come back.

Does this mean the likes of Harding, Butterfield, Hammond will be getting new contracts and staying on for the Prem? Nigel may want them as squad players, but we'll still need to add some quality. Can't see these starting games. Dan & Danny are good backups but I would have let Dean go. Midfield will be cruical next season, so we need a premiership old head to play alongside Morgan or Corky. David Dunn perhaps to join Paul Robinson on free's?

Hope Blackpool make it up today, would be good to see Holloway etal back in there with us, better than old boring Uncle Sam!

I think Connelly deserves the biggest thank you. Surprised about Lee Holmes because he could have been good if stayed injury free and getting more games. When he went out on loan I heard he played well. But then again this is the worlds toughest league (arguably) that we are talking about. Bart was a sack of cack in that Blackpool game. Some keepers drop the odd catch or make a howler. He was woeful. You have to be ruthless and say goodbye. Will we fondly remember him in a couple of years? No. It shows a bit of ambition to let these players go and makes me quite excited at the fact we are getting a brand new keeper. Paul Robinson please. I think he's class. Keep forgetting it's only May, we won't sign anyone for a while so let us look forward to the Euros. Spain have lost Puyol and possibly Villa, Holland have a makeshift defence that doesn't keep as many clean sheets as it used to, and Balotelli will hopefully destroy his hotel causing a massive rift in the Italy squad! Just the Germans to worry about as usual.

Thanks for the effort and being part of the bigger picture at SFC.
I feel for all those released - but more than most Bart! He was clearly a popular member of the team, and although got his chance blew it. The fact we stopped having a keeper on the bench must have been worrying to him.
Good luck Bart, but please do not come back to haunt us.
Good luck to all those seeking new clubs - but I doubt if you will ever find one quite like "ours"!

Chipster says...
9:34am Sat 19 May 12

Yep, deinately need a new keeper to keep KD honest! Not sure if Kelvin will become number 2 straight away, this I would feel would be unfair but time will tell.

We need to look at the full backs, the thought of Harding as an emergency right-back still gives me the shivers! Both Fox and Richardson need to raise they're game.

In midfield I'd like to see a lot more steel, at times we seem so weak in this area. Hammond and Spiderman can't gel when in the side together, or is it my imagination? Also as far as I am concerned the jury is still out on De Ridder, perhaps he could practice a bit more on his crosses. In fact he's not the only one guilty of this, there are quite a few who need to look at themselves in this department!

Up front we seem in reasonable shape, perhaps Billy could do with a bit more pace about him but thats my only critisism! Lee looks a very interesting prospect and it was a real shame he got injured just as he was becoming to blossom, def one to watch out for!

Anyway, I don't think we will see a repitition of the last two seasons, consolidation in the PL should be our target, anything else will be a big bonus! Can't wait for August! COYR's! FOP!

Jaaskelainen has been a top keeper during his very lengthy spell at Bolton. Given that Kelv is beginning to get towards the end of his career why would you bring in a 37 year old!?!?

I think the problem with Richardson and Fox is they are really wing backs and not full backs. Perhaps an option would be to buy a quick CB to put in between JF and JH and push Richardson and Fox 25 yards up the lines.

Very few teams play 442 in the Prem. Maybe we have to change? I also think we need two additional strikers, at the moment we have 3.5 if you include Guly.

I'd like to see us go for Ben Foster. He's had a good season on loan at West Brom, is 29, which isn't too old, and will be wanting to leave Birmingham as they didn't come up. It would depend on whether West Brom have an option in place to sign him, or whether the new manager wants him.

I wouldn't go for Gordon, Robinson or Jaaskelienen. Gordon seems injury prone, and isn't good enough for Sunderland, so why should he be good enough for us, and whilst I like the other two, they're getting on a bit, and both got relegated. Maybe a younger foreign keeper to come in?

We need a young keeper like schemical. KD is a good keeper 35, we need someone to come in and prepare to take over, not take over. Robinson is 33, we want a keeper for the future.
De Canio will take Holmes to Swindon. He has already stated he wants him.
Forte, Forecast and Dickson are on contracts, so you sell rather than release.
Seabourne deserves a chance.
Those not wanted will not be in the 25.

I believe we'll sign better players than most people are talking about.

I mean we signed Championship players in League 1 and a few prem class players in the Championship. The natural way forward is to bring in players who've played in Europe or on an International level.

I can't see us going backwards with transfers (like signing champ players). Of course the odd youngster with potential will get a chance but players of an older age will come from the top, not from lower leagues than ourselves. And they certainly won't be undesired players from other teams like Sunderland etc.

What has the last couple of years taught you guys as Saints fans..?

‘People don’t notice,’ he said. ‘Southampton were promoted last season and this season they over-achieved, by many, many levels. They never had pressure — they just went on a run."

I'll think you'll find we went on several runs Mr Viz Tea!

On a side note Rudi Skacel (who still comes down here a lot to visit Mates and to watch the Saints) Just scored in the Scot's cup final.

When you're top two all season it's not really a run is it? The only fly in the ointment was a massive winning run by Reading who came from no where but in the end it cost West Ham and not us.

Would love to see David connolly in a B&HA shirt next season.
Does he have any current injury issues, and how do you guys rate his chances of doing a job for an outfit like us.

UTA, COYR.

Westham out of the equation would be good for us next season. They were the only side to score more than three against us in the League.
I still hope it's Blackpool though, and they've just equalised!

Gordon,
David has been at times brilliant for Saints.
His movement and touch are Prem class. Some of his goals have come at a time that has been very important in both our 2 promotions.
However his fitness problems have constantly plagued him.
Keep him fit and his experience and quality would be an asset to you.
COYR.
Good luck next season.

david connolly is, in my opinion one of the best strikers we have ever had.his movement and positional sense is top drawer and if it wasn't for his injuries he would have been lamberts partner much more often.he always seems to find space in and around the box and he will still get goals if someone gives him a go.not sure how fit he is at the mo but he is worth a punt and he is a free agent so no fee.

Just a point to the FA. Were's Saints' cup for finishing 2nd having just seen WHU get one for finishing third and winning play-off final?

Totally agree with you. Very suprised to see our longest-serving player leave the club, and all I can say is Saints better have a great keeper to bring in because Forecast can't cut League 2, let alone the Premier League

Actually I think Blackpool have more players we might be interested in so maybe a good result for us. I wonder who Nigel was rooting for? Matt Phillips pass for Ince's goal was class!!!

Moreover I have not seen it mentioned, but i really did love the banner which said "WE ARE BACK"

I am wondering if Jedi is going to be offered a coaching role at Saints. Lets see Monday...........

I voted in the poll to replace kelvin with Bart. Kelvin made one major blunders in league one, and I still worry about if he will be able to hold off the premiership strikers he'll face. Remember shipping four to Peterborough in L1, when mackail-smith terrified him? I though Bart deserved his chance.

He got his chance against blackpool, and boy oh boy was he poor.

I'm not sympathetic to the fact that he didn't know until 20 minutes before kick off that he was starting. You get your chance in footie, and you need to take it.

So I don't know if I was wrong to want to give Bart a try. But no one in their right kind would keep him in the prem as he is now. I feel for him because he has shown great loyalty to saints just like kelv.

Meanwhile kelvin put his super back on this season, and was pure phenom against Leeds. I wasn't happy that he let two long range strikes in againt poopey, especially the first. So, sad to say, he still needs to be replaced if we want to do reasonably well at the top.

Having said all that, I admire kelv and Bart and I'm grateful for everything Rey have done for us. I hope kelv sees out his career with us as a playing back-up, because he could become a great coach.

Just sit back, relax and get ready to google anyone we sign to find out who they are

It's funny how he had a good game against Blackpool in the FA Cup, when we were League 1, and they were Premiership. For some reason he seemed to have lost his confidence, which is a shame as I felt he could have been good.

West ham's sour grapes make me laugh. We were top 2 all season and for 3 months had an average of six players unavailable and still west Ham couldn't finish above us. Sam has always been a grizzle guts.
They were out played today and the better footballing side lost. Yet showing who the real fans are, West ham deserve promotion for finishing clear third.
Schemical was at Man City before leicester.
As for KD he was voted goalkeeper of the year in both divisions.
So why get an old keeper we need a young one with premier potential.

I love it that SFC are getting the work done behind the scenes. Again and again we lucky lucky fans are blessed with being able to say "this is the most exciting time for the club" every time we say it Nicola takes us up another rung on the ladder. Get the feeling it's "Giddy Heights" for us!!! We wish outwards players all the very best. Sincerely hoping the likes of Ryan Doble and Lee Holmes find decent clubs. Bart no doubt has a great future ahead of him.. loyalty counts for a lot but he does have to do match time in the lower leagues to prove himself.

As for players staying to play in the prem; congratulations and good luck to all in what ever role you're handed in whichever squad... you are our Saints... every one a hero.

I'm really excited and looking forward to a few additions of world class. Whether we get them or not will show if Nicola is serious about a fast track to Europe. You can bet your life he is.... Up to Europe for 2013...
(I'm not putting a question mark after that.. though a lot might)

Nigel Adkins has been in Europe over the last couple of weeks I wonder who he is looking at. Also BBC Five sport reported Nigel was at Wembley yesterday. I wonder if he was watching Ince and Philips. However Matt Gilkes is a pretty good keeper and he is in the Scotland Squad. He would be good competition for Kelvin. Also read Sky sports believe Southampton are going for
Hooper again 7 million!. Still think that Hammond Puncheon Forcaste Forte Dickson and Barny will go. Burnley where interested in Seabourne. If we went for Rodriguez we could use Seabourne as a make weight part of a cash plus player deal.

Don't do polls or slag 'em off like you.
And unlike you, I will not cheer or boo on the occasion of Kelvin -or whoever is our custodian- when he inevitably drops it.
Now you drop it, move on and join me in wishing Bart EVERY success, and work off that misplaced bitterness.
